Notes on Maize

Months ago I wrote a small post detailing some small facts about Niko that could be helpful in writing them and today I intend to do the same with Maize. Most of these bullet points will be based on canon dialogue, but there may be some speculation as it goes on, especially since Maize doesn't have as much dialogue to go by.

Maize uses the most ellipses out of anyone in the game, this is most likely due to her current condition

During both routes she struggles to make full sentences, but in Solstice she has more to say since she has a more active role

Her sprites also show more vines growing around her as she strains herself. These disappear in the epilogue.

She refers to Niko as "savior"

Notably, a lot of her sprites are smiling, but all the others are stressed.

In a normal run, she expresses she can't believe the Savior is real at first.

She is not one ask others to do things for her, and even wonders if being able to feel the sun again before dying is too selfish.

She is, however, pretty selfless. In Solstice she makes an active sacrifice in order to help Niko continue with their journey, despite having no guarantee that this will work out.

She leaves a seed in the normal routes, but does not leave one in Solstice, and her body does not "disappear".

When given the choice for her to receive help from the town, Maize rejects it and instead prefers to soothe Niko, repeating that "It's okay..."

Maize however, does not bring false hopes. She states the Sun will not save her, but she wants to see it before she dies, at least.

(you can make a metaphor about the whole game with that)

Maize will accept comfort when possible, when it is just her life on the line, but the moment others are in danger, she will prefer state that "fear is good for this", since it keeps her vines in place.

She is said to be ancient by her creator, Eliza.

Maize always has her eyes closed in canon, and appears to be either sitting down or lying on the floor.

Maize is known of in the city, but she is never referred to by name, just as a "plant spirit".

However, her health state is something others keep up with, as there is a robot watching over the vines, who will report back to the city once Niko explains the cause of the vines is Maize.

Mason is aware of Maize as well, and aids Niko in her regrowth in a normal run.

There is knowledge of a sacred kernel that must be regrown once it is brought to the city, there is a garden specifically dedicated to this.

Despite this, there is no other information on Maize or other plant spirits available. Either Niko does not encounter it or it has been lost.
