Staff Pick of the Week

My eye was caught by the bright yellow cover of Seven is a Frozen Number: a Selection of Poetry by Marcus J. Grapes published New Orleans: Aphrodisia Press, 1967.

Throughout its pages sheets of translucent colored tissue papers appear, transforming the text and images through the turning of the pages. The drawings appear to be quick sketches. The drawings and papers set the book apart from other books of poetry. Jack Grapes made the illustrations that accompany his poems which he wrote between September, 1965 and August, 1966.

Grapes is an editor, poet, playwright, and teacher. In New Orleans he self-published two books of selected poetry under Aphrodisia Press, Seven is a Frozen Number, 1967 and his first, A Savage Peace, 1965. Grapes’s life long friend and collaborator Allan Yasnyi contributed the frontispiece for the book. 

In Los Angeles, 1989, Jack began a literary Journal called ONTHEBUS, with the goal of highlighting a diverse view of poetry. The journal has featured over 2,000 California poets. He has published over 24 of his own books, and currently teaches and runs his own method writing workshops.

This is a second edition printing of 500 copies.. Our copy is signed by the author.

The perils of collecting paper items while living with an elderly cat! I left my stacks of unsorted manga on the library floor, and Rosencrantz peed on some in his ancient cat confusion. About 11-13 OOP volumes were ruined (fig. 1), had to be trashed. New system for sorting the incomplete series (figs.2-3) is fresh and organic (and enough off the floor to be safer). Dark Dungeons. Classic religious tract by Jack Chick. This one is very famous. It tells the story of how Dungeons and Dragons is dangerous. One girl kills herself and another joins a witches coven. This is from the 1980s and is so old the staple is rusting. It’s very fragile. . . There was a similar film in the 80s called Mazes and Monsters in which Tom Hanks had his first starring role. 📚 INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY! 📚 Q: Were you able to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day in some way today, whether by going out or online? A: Before dinner this evening, I dragged my husband and son to my favorite indie bookstore, @flyleafbooks, which is just down the road from us in Chapel Hill. This is my haul! I snagged *the very last* Grishaverse tote from @outofprint 😍, and got myself THE GIRLS ARE ALL SO NICE HERE by @laurieelizabethflynn, which I've been wanting to read forever, and HOW THE SOUTH WON THE CIVIL WAR, by the incomparable historian @heathercoxrichardson, which I can't wait to read. Not pictured are two books my son got, a book I got my MIL for her birthday (ROBERT E. LEE AND ME by @tyseidule), and two books I picked out that will be my birthday gift 😁 (one of them is a Dolly Parton appreciation activity book and I'm in love 😂).
