Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day

Ink’s Fic Recs

I’ve always wanted to be more supportive of the other creators in the fandom but I’m a slow reader and I have a shit memory. I can’t remember who writes what, what OC belongs to who, or if I’ve read something already. I decided to start tracking the works I was reading as a draft, just for my own reference, so I can participate in ask memes and stuff. But apparently it’s Fic Writer’s Appreciation Day, so I thought I’d share it!

This is no where near a complete list of fic I’ve read or enjoyed, just what I’ve read since I started doing this. I will continue to update it as I read. If you’re a mutual and/or someone who reads my fics please reach out and tell me to read your stuff if you’re not on this list!!

Also I just FINALLY got my AO3 subscription emails to work correctly, so hopefully I can actually start keeping up.

The vast majority of these will be Solavellan.

@blarfkey AO3 Solas/Ellana Lavellan  Dear Fen’Harel is the cutest damn thing. It’s supposed to be inspired by Dear Daddy Long Legs? Which I can only assume is cuter than it sounds, based on this fic. It’s not quite done, but getting close. There’s a museum date chapter that’s to die for.

@broomclosetkink AO3 Solas/Ellana Lavellan and Solas/Harea Lavellan I think this was the first Solavellan fic I ever read, and I’ve gone back to it a dozen times. I was frustrated with the relationship in game and had to google where people did fanfiction these days. NSFT, because that’s definitely was I was looking for at the time x.x

@ellstersmash​ AO3 Solas/Athi Lavellan I’ve only read one of fics so far but it was lovely! Some big Solavellan angst simmered down to give you just as much pain in smaller word counts lol. Great characterization of Solas, and Athi is very fierce.

@elveny AO3 Solas/Lyssa Lavellan (born in an alienage) Her Spark of Hope timeline covers Lyssa’s life from early childhood up to and including Trespasser, and honestly of all the fics I’ve read I think this is the most I’ve ever felt connected with the author through the work. What she chooses to touch or focus on reminds me so much of my own experience in the fandom.

@bardinhightown AO3 Solas/Naia Lavellan A very cute Beauty and the Beast AU set in France, called La Belle et La Bête and set in France. Not quite complete, but almost there. I really like the interpretation of the curse. I think the Lavellans count as human in this one? Open to interpretation I suppose.

@keturagh AO3 Solas/Pangara Lavellan Ket (frequently blamed) is working on a big Lore Meta I’m majorly looking forward to. In the mean time, they have many small fics covering the course of Pangara and Solas’ relationship, from domestic to kinky AF, through the Inquisition timeline.

@luzial AO3  Solas/Ellana Lavellan I powered through Luzial’s (and Maerisk’s) Overgrown faster than I’ve read anything in a long time. Ellana is a reporter and Solas is her expert consultant. No where near complete if I had to guess, but you gotta love a fic with both Enemies to Lovers AND Fake Dating.

@roguelioness tumblr AO3 Solas/Samarra Bayart, Solas/Thalia  and Elise/Cullen A Whole New World is a longfic of a modern woman falling into Thedas, with dark!Solas. Very long, and more to come. For Goodness Bakes is absolutely adorable. She’s also got some Cullen/Trevelyan and some Krem/Maryden. 

@thevikingwoman tumblr AO3 Solas/Iwyn Lavellan One of my best friends in the fandom, Viking has dozens of drabbles, perfect bite size pieces of friendship or romance for when you just need a moment to unwind. She’s got a very gentle Solavellan fix it I recommend. Iwyn is a dom can be found in canon, modern AU, or the ice skating AU!

Currently watching: WandaVision,  like Shakes. My husband and I tend to like different things, and we’re not huge Marvel fans (watching Infinity Wars and Endgame recently was like - let’s get this done lol) though we do like superhero movies for the easy entertainment. WandaVision seemed interesting and we’re enjoyed it. It’s very clever in some ways. Also watching The Untamed, which I am really enjoying. I do like the over the top fight choreography, the magic is really cool (and quite different from magic culturally rooted in Europe/Western traditions), the sets and costumes are great, and also right now everyone is hurting and things are going to shit, so yeah.

Currently playing: Valhalla, technically? I haven’t been played for a while. Also playing Hearthstone and Minecraft Dungeons (as a family game). Reading some IF - @ataleofcrowns​ and Wayfarer by @idrellegames​.

Currently consuming: getting chocolate and tea when I’ve posted this.

Currently craving: chocolate and tea. Also more hours in the day.

March 2021 - Progress Update

March is almost done??Already?? Ugh. When?How??

Anyway here’s my update for March 2021 for @hangedmandisc​

FOR WRITING:

Write at least 500 words for a DA FIC:

When I started this challenge I assumed there are going to be months when my brain will refuse to write thus the low word count goal. I’ve been lucky, until now, my depression didn’t stop me from writing. Fingers crossed. Ofc, I still struggle with my brain telling me daily I suck and I should stop, no one gives a shit and I’ll never be as good as the authors i admire. But eh, just white noise, right?xD

This month I wrote a lot because of two writing challenges I participated in. I managed to write almost 7k words in 3 days!! My brain melted at the end but wow!!

Publish at least 1 DA work:

I’ve published four more works for #storiesofthedas. You can read them on my Ao3. 

FOR READING:

Read at least one DA new fic/new chapter a week.

OK, so I’ve always said I’ll write down what I read but I always forget ugh. I’ll write here what I remember reading (I won’t @ the writers here because I don’t want to bother them with my silly ramblings)

2. FInished  Quantum Veil Theory by Viscariafields

3. Read 3 chapters of  The Taming of Fen'Harel by beaubashley

Read a full book once a month (if over 500 pages, a book at every 2 months):

For an unknown reason, I’m falling behind with this. I’ve started a book, with absolutely no drive to read it, read almost 100 pages then gave up and started another but I’m getting the same feeling. I’m entering into a reading stump and I do not like it at all! 

OTHERS:

Take a full break from any media at least once a month (the 10th of every month)

I was actually able to do this!!! Wow! It was nice, to stay away from the madness of social media and just enjoy a day with no modding or stuff like that. I’ll try to do this more because I really liked it. 

Conclusion:

I’m still struggling with my crippling self doubt about writing but I enjoy the process and I’m having so much fun coming up with new stuff to write so eh, fuck my brain.

In April, I will try to do Nano for the first time in my life. Please be kind with me, April and let me enjoy my writing!

Here’s a bit from the next chapter of Overgrown:

“I know you are not actually asleep. You can drop the act now - Alexius is on the other side of the clearing.”

Ellana opened one eye and peered up at Solas. “How’d you know?”

“Because you are far too inquisitive to have resisted eavesdropping on that conversation, which was loud enough that you must have been alerted to it.”

That was true, but he really didn’t need to be such an ass about it, Ellana thought.

“Also.” Solas’ rolled his shoulders as he clasped his hands behind his back, and then avoided her gaze. “You snore.”

“I do not!” Ellana said, flying upright.

“You absolutely do. Though not loudly enough to wake yourself, apparently.”

“Great. Fine,” Ellana said, horrified. “We can debate the finer points of my sleeping habits when we’re not being violently threatened by some Tevinter shithead.”

Excerpt:

Though the first evening after their dinner at The Crestwood Arms was painfully awkward, filled with extended silences and a noticeable lack of eye contact, the days after improved markedly. It was still a challenge for Ellana to share such a close space with anyone, let alone someone who had so recently told her in no uncertain terms that he didn’t reciprocate her feelings. But she and Solas settled into a surprisingly easy calm that made their collaboration much smoother than it had been previously. In some ways, it was easier to talk to him now that she was no longer wondering what was going on in his head. She could focus on the work, and nothing else.  

Or at least that was what she told herself. She could almost believe it when they were out in the field, with plenty of distractions surrounding them. But it was nearly impossible to ignore the ache in her chest when she lay in bed with him at night, listening to the slow rhythm of his breathing as he fell asleep.

Ellana smiled at him, an expression which Solas foolishly assumed was genuine until she cut him off at the knees.

“I suppose you give this speech to your first-year students at the start of every semester?” she asked snidely.

It was, in fact, a verbatim recitation of the speech he gave to one of his upper level seminar classes at the start of every semester - a change he’d made after he discovered that freshman weren’t particularly ready to hear or understand the argument. 

“Perhaps it bears some similarities to things I may have once said in a classroom,” Solas replied evasively. Ellana scoffed in a way that made him doubt she was at all fooled.

“There is something I have been meaning to address for some time,” he began.

Ellana looked up, the first time she’d done so since their meals had arrived. Her expression was unreadable. “Go on,” she said quietly.

“I wish to clear the air regarding some interactions that have occurred between us.” 

“Alright.” Ellana set down her fork.

“I am aware that we did not begin on a particularly good footing and that things have only become more complicated since then. Due to the nature of our current arrangement and the necessity of the close proximity in which we currently find ourselves, I simply wish to resolve any confusion that has arisen.” 

“Confusion?” 

“Yes.” 

“Such as?” 

Solas stalled for the first time since he’d begun his prepared speech, wondering if she was truly going to make him say it.

From the next chapter of Overgrown:

The restaurant had an ambiance that was altogether unhelpful. An older Dalish woman guided them to a table near the back of the dining room, set with a long white tablecloth, a lit candlestick, and a glass vase that contained a single embrium in full bloom. Whereas Chez Bellise had opted for a more overstated suggestion of romance, this place instead offered an arresting simplicity for which Solas had not prepared himself.

The older woman - who was, apparently, to be their server as well as hostess - offered wine, but Solas asked for water instead and was relieved when Ellana followed his lead. He needed a clear head today, as much unlike the experience of their last dinner as possible.

In the next moment (which felt like an eternity), Ellana understood the extent of her own delusion. Though she had guessed the lie Solas had told to get them a seat at this table, and even gone along with it to a degree, somehow she had never really contemplated the possibility that he was going to have to pretend to actually propose to her in front of a room full of people, including the two men they’d been eavesdropping on for the past hour. For this oversight, Ellana blamed the wine, and also, irrationally, the lyrical quality Solas’ voice took on when he was speaking in Orlesian.

Once the full weight of their error had descended upon her, Ellana’s heart suddenly kicked back into gear, rushing with the full force of a runaway train directly into her throat. She shifted in her seat and found that Solas, who was wide-eyed with a similar panic, had turned toward her and was reaching a hand into his pocket.

Excerpt:

“The initial reports from our lab dated the samples at over ten thousand years, which is simply nonsensical.”

“Is it?” she asked, looking between Dorian and Solas.

“It’s extremely unlikely,” Krem clarified. “It would mean this place, whatever it is, is older than the establishment of the Chantry, older than the first Imperium, older than any other known evidence of civilization in Thedas. If the first results were correct, we need to be absolutely sure about them.”

“Krem is being understandably optimistic,” Dorian said. “As much as I’d love to believe that we might have stumbled upon the oldest constructed site in the world, a contaminated sample or some other lab error is far more likely. But, not to worry, we’ll have it corrected soon enough.”

Vaguely, Ellana wondered which headline Cassandra would give top billing: New Evidence Found of the Final Inquisitor, or Archaeological Dig Uncovers Oldest Settlement in Thedas. She had a suspicion that, even in the face of a discovery that would change the understanding of Thedosian history as they knew it, somehow the Inquisitor would still win out.

Ellana resisted the urge to toss her phone out the truck’s window. Barely.
