"After seeing Gordon Parks's 1943-44 series documenting the fishing industry along the Atlantic coast, I immediately wondered about who was omitted from that documentation: African American fishermen. I was inspired to investigate the history of Black Americans in the commercial fishing industry-a legacy that is obscured. Fishing has deep roots in the Black community, yet the voices of Black fishermen are vastly underrepresented and their businesses in decline."

Staff Picks | Helen Frankenthaler, Book of Clouds, 2007 — I find there to be an immediate beauty in Helen Frankenthaler's stunning edition, Book of Clouds, 2007. In terms of my personal aesthetic preferences it hits all the right notes. I love the fine quality of paper and the visible wood grain that seems to effortlessly combine with delicate washes of ink. But beyond aesthetics, I appreciate the technical prowess Frankenthaler demonstrates in this extraordinarily complex work. Incorporating techniques of aquatint, etching, woodcut, pochoir and hand coloring, Book of Clouds captures the "born at once" quality that has become synonymous with Frankenthaler's paintings while simultaneously presenting all that is beloved about printmaking. Frankenthaler notably remarked, "I had to learn that printmaking cannot be done impatiently if it's to be done well." Having practiced printmaking myself I can wholeheartedly attest to that statement. The triptych composition of Book of Clouds is reminiscent of a Japanese Shoji screen (room divider).
