One fay while scrolling through Facebook, I happened upon a work in progress by Michael Simbajon of my favorite X-Men femme fatale, Spiral. You so rarely see her drawn, I immediately inquired if it was available. To my delight, it was both available, and it was affordable too. I immediately laid dibs. As Michael was finishing up Spiral, he asked his watchers if they'd be down for another character? A unanimous vote cried out to add Longshot. This was fine by me as he's one of my favorite heroes. Michael contacted me a little later with the jealous boyfriend idea. I thought it was a great play. And now this cover has finally made it to its new home. Was watching Tony Kent a week ago on Whatnot draw a killer Red Sonja. He was feeling like keeping the fantasy character coming, so when his faithful companion, Shelley, started scrolling through blank covers for ideas. As she was flipping through, I saw this Hanna Barbera Future Quest cover. And when I was a kid, my favorite HB cartoon was Thundarr the Barbarian. And the idea popped in my brain in a second. Fantasy female + Hanna Barbers = Princess Ariel So I asked Tony if he knew the cartoon and character. And sure enough, he did. Achievement Unlocked: Longshot I received a birthday present #mailcall from my best friend today. Inside was a GCG graded 9.8 copy of Longshot issue 3. With that my goal of collecting the original Longshot series in near perfect condition. Longshot is one of my favorite heroes. His powers of probability manipulation (good luck) only work based on Altruism, by doing the right thing simply because it's the right thing to do. I recently met with one of Longshot's original creators, Ann Nocenti. She let me know that originally people found hom boring. I couldn't believe it. Now I want to meet Chris Claremont and asked him why he added him to the X-men line up? So now my Longshot collection includes: Longshot 1-6 CGC graded 9.8 Longshot 1-6 signed by Ann Nocenti Marvel Age #29 (first appearance?) Received an awesome mail call today on my birthday. Recently I commissioned Andres F. Cruz for a Star Wars pin up of the prettiest lady of the Star Wars universe, Princess Leia. Andres sent me only snippets as previews while he worked on ghe piece. When it arrived today I was blown away. #mailcallmonday I received two kick ass packages as I walked through the door today. One from the excellent folks over at Clan McDonald Comics and one from eBay. On Superbowl Sunday, CMC had a sale of slabbs, and if you picked the winner of the game before kick off, you got an extra discount. I chose correctly and got a great deal on these two covers. First off, Notti & Nyce Cosplay Gallery Vol. 2 Fatally Flawless Mortal Kombat Scorpion chase variant signed by Mike DeBalfo. You could only get this cover if you bought the 10 cover packs, and even then, there was only a chance of getting it as there were only 100 made. I never thought I'd afford this book, and now 37/100 is mine graded 9.6 by CBCS. Don't ever let FOMO get you. With patience and time, most comics become affordable. The next thing I got from CMC was a CBCS 9.6 grade copy of the Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special. I love Grifter & Zealot. I love the WildC.A.T.s. With a Jim Lee cover sporting these two and CMC prices, it was too good to pass up. About the same time I got these two books from CMC, I got an offer I couldn't refuse on eBay. A seller offered me a CGC 9.8 grade copy of the first issue of Katana, the David Finch sketch variant for a bill. I immediately said yes! I've been wanting this book for a bit, and other sellers are asking crazy prices. Again, patience and time win the day. A few weeks ago, the good people at Clan McDonald Comics had an open vendor sale, and I was able to pick up this amazing piece by Jimbo Salgado. It took a bit of a circuitous path to get here. Ordered from guys in Illinois. Drawn in the Philippines. And shipped to Maryland from Singapore. But now it's in its final home. #mailcall Received a package from Brazil today from the extremely talented Wellington Rafael. He is an amazing erotica artist who was able to complete a picture I've been envisioning for years. In 2012, Mel B starred in a breast cancer awareness campaign called CoppaFeel! I always wanted to see it recreated in a certain way. And I finally found the artist got it. I'm my mind, I always saw Jennifer Anniston playing Spiral. So I asked for her as Spiral in the same pose, with none other than the lucky Longshot to give her a hand. I absolutely love how this came out! The second picture is a belated birthday present for my friend Travis, who is stationed overseas right now. I heard he had a thing for Harley Quinn, so i asked if her animated debut could be a little more realistic. This will be here when he returns. #mailcall The final book I sent off to CGC for grading has arrived! This book arrived at the house literally minutes before we headed up to Baltimore. So I took it as a sign. Takashi Okazaki's Star Wars: Visions issue 1 Peach Momoko virgin variant cover. CGC gave it a 9.8 which isn't too surprising as I didn't even break the Frankie's seal on the bag & board. While I'm not completely on the Peach train, she does make some exceptional art! One of my favorite artists to work with is Hugo Pelcastre. As an artist his work is phenomenal, as a person he's friendly and a joy to work with. No matter what idea I've ever come up with he's taken on the challenge. Here are just three of the multiple covers he's drawn for me. 1. BRZRKR issue 1 I wanted the idea that the immortal Beserker saw all the different lives he could of lived. The plan was a front and back piece, but turns out only the front cover was blank. We ended up going with John Wick, Ted Logan, Kai, Johnny Silverhand, & Neo. 2. Spider Squirrel issue 1 This is an independent comic done by my friend Charlie McElvy. His hero Spider Squirrel and sidekick Trash Panda. I had a wild idea to do them as Ranma 1/2 characters cosplayers. 3. Disney Comics & Stories issue 1 For this cover I let Hugo know I was thinking about a battle between my wife's favorite Ursula (from the Little Mermaid) and my favorite Kida (from Atlantis). Hugo came up with everything else. I last spoke to Hugo in October 2022. He was about to send me my latest batch of covers, including these three. We had just spoken about a new piece and then he was gone. During October many artists take on a self imposed 'challenge' called Inktober. For everyday of October they draw a new piece of art. One such artist I follow, Lucas, took on this challenge with X-men flair, drawing a different member of the X-men everyday. He then auctioned off each peace that day. I was able to win two of the auctions for my two favorite X-men. Wolverine & Longshot. I was very lucky winning the Wolverine piece as it was the second drawing and I don't think people had caught on to what he was doing. Longshot was the very last day of the month, so I patiently waited all month long. Earlier this year the insanely talented Mike Krome was offering a commission opportunity through the fine folks of Clan McDonald Comics. Having gotten a piece from Mr. Krome three years ago at Baltimore Comic Con I knew how great his commissions were. But I wanted to get something extra special, something I don't normally get for commission, and when I went through my blank covers I found it. Heavy Metal! So I only had to decide who I should get. Of all the treasures ig got at Baltimore Comic Con 2022, I think this is the coolest! Two original comic pages from the incredible Barry Kitson. These pages are from The Titans issue 39, pages 13 & 14 featuring Dick Grayson and Barbara 'Babs' Gordon on a date night. These pages were published in 2002, twenty years before Tom Taylor made it cool again. If I'd had a few more dollars I'd have picked up page 12 as well for the intro into this scene. But I'm not complaining, I was given a great deal by Mr. Kitson's staff, who were very cool. Got an excellent #mailcall this evening that has been a long time coming. Almost a year ago Torpedo Comics hosted a Whatnot show featuring insanely talented Sajad Shah. One of the pieces they had that night was an original sketch by Sajad, a cover homage to Nightwing issue 1 on a Grayson cover. I had to have it! About the same time Clan McDonald Comics was working incredible Ula Mos. I had the cover sent directly to them for Ula to use her hellacious color skills on the cover. After which it was sent out to CBCS for encapsulation. And it's finally home! But Baltimore Comic Con starts tomorrow. I'm seriously thinking about getting this cracked open and getting the author's, Tom King, signature on it. Hell of an opportunity.
