When I was in college, one of the books I checked out of the library constantly was called Satiristas, and contained tons of interviews with people who, at the time, were considered to be at the forefront of comedy. I particularly remember loving the pictures of everyone, including multiple people whose interviews were cut. I spent a very long time trying to find this book in my garage and eventually gave up, and since the book has been long out of print and selling for hundreds online, I was doing my best to track down a copy.
Somehow Amazon ended up with a SINGLE copy at $30, which I jumped on.
Tumblr media
Given that this came out in 2010, parts of this have not aged well. I'd definitely argue cutting interviews from John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman, in hindsight (and at the time like COME ON THE BUGLE WAS RIGHT THERE), was REALLY dumb:
Tumblr media
Their pictures were kept tho! (JOHN IN SWEATERS TEAM WHERE ARE YOU)

I haven't had a chance to dissect the whole book, but an example of how someone who was interviewed was presented:

(That photo of Paul, Amy, and Stephen is one of my favorite celeb pictures of all time.)
I haven't had a chance to go through this whole book since receiving it (or honestly, even a bit of it), but if there's any of the below you're interested in seeing me post up, let me know. (Again, caveat that this is 12 years old.)

Hey, everyone!
I grabbed a ticket to see Theater Camp at my local indie theater for this afternoon. I have NEVER seen a movie by myself before (and this is the exact type of film my ex would hate), so it'll be a totally new experience for me.
Tumblr media
I've heard it's wonderful and hilarious, so it sounds right up my alley. Plus, it's got two of my favorite female comedians: Amy Sedaris and Ayo Edebiri! 🙌🏼
Amy, as you may know, was a part of two of my favorite programs—Strangers with Candy (along with Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello) and At Home with Amy Sedaris (where I first saw the hysterical Cole Escola!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Ayo is fantastic in everything, particularly as the new voice of Missy on Big Mouth and as Sydney on The Bear (and, yes, my post on that INCREDIBLE show will be up in September...I'm assuming it's going to sweep the Emnys!).

Tumblr media
I will let you all know how the film is, and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Heeey, so, you blew my mind on your post responding to the "where did you find fanfic" poll because you mentioned tds_rpf. I have to ask...what was your username on livejournal? You totally don't have to tell me, but I was DEEP in the TDS/TCR RPF community there, and I just have to ask. My username was shoebox_addict.
omg--ok, so i genuinely do not remember my lj username from that time, i had a couple different ones over my lj time and my tds_rpf era would have been my earliest one when i was like 14/15 i think (although...now that i'm thinking about it, i must have been reading fic in that broader community thru at least 2008 when i was 19, bc i wrote a NaNoWriMo in '08 that featured anderson cooper and keith olberman and jake shears, but that definitely never made it onto the internet), but i was almost definitely just a lurker and didn't participate beyond reading.
BUT i'm assuming you are shoebox_addict on ao3, and i have definitely noticed when you comment on my fic that your username/maybe pfp is very familiar to me, in that niggling "i know you from somewhere" kinda way, and i'd just assumed it was prob from my sherlock days cause that's where i recognize most fandom folks from (my longest/deepest fandom experience), but i just clicked on your ao3, and no sherlock, but your old fake news rpf has paul dinello and denis leary which is a BLAST FROM THE PAST. i don't remember that specific fic but that is almost definitely where i recognize you from, which is WILD! HELLO!

This week’s Monday Philm (on a Tuesday) is Strangers With Candy (2005), based on the eponymous TV show and one of my least favorite movies lmao. I like Amy Sedaris elsewhere but I never watched the show and it’s not really within my sense of humor, but it does get a few laughs, especially from PSH, Allison Janney, Greg Hollimon, and Stephen Colbert.
PSH’s deadpan performance as Henry is hilarious. There’s not too much to write—it’s a pretty small role that’s better seen that described—just that it’s fun to see Phil fucking around in a comedy with some of his friends, not taking anything too seriously. Funny that last week’s feature was Empire Falls because there are a few lines (especially in Principal Blackman’s office) where you can hear the same broad accent he used as Charlie Mayne lol. Perfect pratfall, precisely in frame, no notes. And I LOVE that little smile Henry/Phil gives when he takes his clipboard back from Matthew Broderick—it’s the blink of an eye but one of my favorite little flourishes he ever did.
I was so bored and I’d already gone through the hassle of getting the DVD to work on my laptop so I watched the commentary track with Amy, Stephen Colbert, and director Paul Dinello for Phil’s scenes. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the commentary actually did address one of the few questions I had about Strangers With Candy—what Henry writes on his clipboard that makes Alice clam up then announce the science fair winner herself. I’d wondered if Phil had actually written anything, and, much like how PTA shot the phone call scene in Licorice Pizza, Dinello says he told Phil to “write something that would offend her.” It’s too dirty to repeat here—even Amy and Stephen’s jaws’ drop when Dinello tells them on the track—but oh, what an awful filthy boy.
(Related, since this was their only film project together: I never realized Phil and Amy dated briefly in the 90s until someone said it plainly a few months ago, but in hindsight it is so clear. How did I not immediately know when she described playing this game with him: “I’d be like, You have to act like you passed out on top of me and I have to try to get out from underneath you without waking you up.” She is stronger than me bc I would never be the same.)

ARMAGEDDON TIME (2022)
Starring Banks Repeta, Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Anthony Hopkins, Jaylin Webb, Ryan Sell, Tovah Feldshuh, Dane West, Landon James Forlenza, Andrew Polk, Richard Bekins, Jacob MacKinnon, Domenick Lombardozzi, John Diehl, Jeb Kreager, Marcia Jean Kurtz, Lauren Sharpe, John Dinello,  Griffin Wallace Henkel, Jen Weissenberg and Jessica Chastain.
Screenplay by  James Gray.
Directed by James Gray.
Distributed by Focus Features. 115 minutes. Rated R.
Screened at the 2022 Philadelphia Film Festival.
Sometimes you see a movie which is so obviously a labor of love, a story in which an artist is allowing some personal glimpse into their own past, that it’s sort of strange to acknowledge that the story is nowhere near as important to you as to the person who made it.
In theory, Armageddon Time should resonate for me. It’s about growing up an artistic Jewish outcast with a big, eccentric family on the outskirts of a big city (in this case, in Queens, New York), in the early 1980s. I know kids like Paul Graff (Banks Repeta). In many ways, I was a kid like Paul Graff.
So why doesn’t Armageddon Time really work for me?
I’m not sure exactly. Perhaps it is the fact that the film is very oddly paced. Perhaps it is because much of the acting is mannered and a bit over the top. Perhaps it is because the story doesn’t really have enough meat on the bones to intrigue. Perhaps it is because the lead character does some really stupid things. Perhaps it is because its moral is heavy-handed and not particularly surprising or insightful.
Perhaps it is because despite the fact that they did a good job with era-appropriate props and wardrobe, it never really feels like it is taking place in 1980. Perhaps it is because there is absolutely no reason for this story to be called Armageddon Time other than the fact that the filmmakers wanted to use the Clash song of essentially the same title (“Armagideon Time”) in the soundtrack – which I suppose may be a good enough reason. Perhaps it is because there are two unnecessary cameo appearances by actors playing members of the Trump family. (More on that later.)
Whatever it is, I wanted to like Armageddon Time much more than I did.
The movie was written and directed by James Gray (whose last film was the similarly underwhelming sci-fi drama Ad Astra) and is apparently loosely based on his life.
It is a story of racism, anti-Semitism and white privilege in a highly WASPy section of Queens at the literal birth of Reaganomics. (The 1980 presidential election is a constant backdrop for the action and a late scene has the Graff family mournfully watching Reagan sweep into the White House with a landslide victory.)
Paul is one of the few Jewish kids in his school. His best friend Johnny (Jalyn Webb) is one of the few Black people. Both deal with discrimination throughout, and yet in the long run Paul is at least partially shielded by his white privilege to the point that he mostly gets away with things that Johnny often gets blamed for. This is doubly concerning because often Paul is the instigator of the trouble, but Johnny seems to be the one always getting punished.
Not that he is completely blameless either. In the early 1980s if some student told his teacher to fuck himself – twice – in the course of a class like Johnny does here, he would at the very least be suspended. However, in Paul’s constant attempts to escape his family life – a life that is mostly pretty cushy, to be honest – Paul keeps coming up with wild schemes and Johnny is the one who inevitably pays.
Yes, Paul stands out in his horribly white bread neighborhood, a haven of class and snootiness, but he can basically blend in. Johnny has no such option.
Of course, Gray has found an odd way of demonstrating the small-mindedness of the neighborhood, arguably the best-known inhabitants of the borough, the Trumps.
Strangely, they found it important enough to get an A-list actress like Jessica Chastain to do a single cameo scene – playing former judge Maryanne Trump, of all people. Adding to the craziness, Chastain was a replacement, apparently Cate Blanchett was originally tapped for the role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. That’s two Oscar-caliber actors who were going to be brought in for a single speech – a nice enough speech, I guess, but still…
Not only that, but John Diehl also has a few scenes as family patriarch Fred Trump, oozing unctuousness and malice. Luckily, son Donnie was nowhere to be found. However, even if Gray did grow up amongst Trumps, which I assume is the point of this little side venture, it leaves an oily sheen on the film.
It’s just one of many misfires which makes Armageddon Time a disappointing indulgence.

I saw Amy Sedaris tonight and she was FUCKING AMAZING. She also said that she was working on something new with Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello. They’re done with Strangers with Candy for good, but something new is definitely in the works, I hope it comes out in the next two years or so but she didn’t give a timeline, just said they were figuring out what to do still
