i was visiting chicago last weekend and i walked around and found a comic shop. i’ve been trying to find a place that sold archie sonic comics (becus i’m a collector even of subjectively bad and not cannon media) and i happen to find a handful so i was super excited! i picked up 3 of them.

it was issue 30, 41, and the knuckles spin-off 14.

what’s so special about this you may ask?

the first two are relatively normal. knuckles 14 however is the issue where charmy’s friend (mello) gets a laced chili dog from a carnival stand and proceeds to overdose on LSD -oh i’m sorry “lemon sundrop dandelion”- and dies (and then the chaotix eventually overdose too but live obviously)

i have watched way too many archie sonic youtube review videos and so when i realized that i had found that specific issue i almost lost my shit. i treated this like it was some rare collectors item that the world has never seen. i legit almost screamed. in reality this is just another horrible pender’s story that was worth a whopping 4 dollars. but listen y’all THIS SHIT SHOW OF A COMIC IS SPECIAL TO ME IN A COMEDIC WAY OKAY ☹️☹️☹️

i have yet to read it becus it’s been a hectic week but when i do i’m going to curl up by the fireplace, relax, and absolutely laugh my ass off.

just learned that ken penders doesnt claim ownership of fiona despite helping with her redesign and reintroduction because he doesnt want to claim ownership of a character he didnt make... isnt this the same guy that says shade the echidna is his character when he didnt create her and sega owns her

it’s mourning archie preboot hours once again folks and all i’ve been thinking about all day is jules and shard. the father who never got to be a father and the son who never got to be a son. the catalyst of it all, the person who lost himself after giving it all up for his family, who gave up his personhood, connecting with the robot modeled after that very same family he sacrificed for and discovering his own personhood for the very first time. the person most familiar and most victimized by chuck’s overzealous desire for innovation then backfiring comforting his latest impulsive and regretted decision. the mutual experiences of having your agency ripped from you again and again, tearing away a bit more of you each time, and you being used for the benefit of others be it parts or violence or leverage or manipulation. it’s being the first one of your kind and the last one of your kind and both being a tragedy. and sitting outside of windows longing for a family and sitting vigilant night after night because robots cannot sleep but that does not mean they can’t love their family

Just checked out your Ken Penders myths post. You think after learning all this stuff about how some stuff is misunderstood or exaggerated about him that you might have a more softened view of him than you might have had previously? Maybe even think that his large hatedom is misplaced? Seeing all that makes me feel less mad since it looks like he didnt go out of his way to fuck Archie or anything.

i definitely think the hatedom around penders is exaggerated, yeah. some of the shit people will say about him is wild, and i've tried (in vain) to correct people where i can. people get the facts of the lawsuits wildly incorrect and make it sound like archie never did anything wrong. people also take all sorts of shit out of context to try and paint him as a Literal Actual Child Predator for wanting to write typical dumb teen soap opera drama with sonic characters. people are just always frothing at the mouth looking for any excuse to dunk on him

that being said, i still think he's a weird asshole who never misses a chance to rile up reactionary nerd hate campaigns against any other sonic comic contributors he's perceived as being against him, particularly ian flynn. and also he still does shit like tracing the work of other artists, or threatening legal action because the sonic movies depicted knuckles as having a dad, which is an idea he thinks he owns. so some of his negative public image is definitely deserved. but i also have to pity the guy

HEY YOU Hit me with some Julie Su propoganda cuz I'm mostly lukewarm on her character and don't know all that much about her.

OK OK ... well baseline info she's the daughter of dark legion general luger, and half sister of lien-da and kragok, who are twins and both high ranking legion soldiers. when their mother (merin-da) died and luger remarried, ld and kragok hated his new wife (julie-su's mother) (mari-su) so bad they orchestrated her death, info which was they kept on the DL for a long time until js eventually found out about it. memory situation, js is raised by other folks who actually love her and doesn't learn who her blood family is until later. she joins knuckles because she feels inexplicably drawn to him (soul touch) (echidna soulmates) so she defects from the legion to join the chaotix. the soul touch thing sucks and i hate it but this is how it goes. ill talk about my au version of her at the end lol bc things ive built on top of canon are part of the reason why shes one of my fave charas in the series lul

ANYWHO i honestly find it pretty frustrating when people talk about js as just being pink knuckles, shoehorned into the story to give knuckles an obligatory girlfriend, because it really demonstrates that they like. weren't paying a lick of attention to anything because she genuinely has a LOT of personality but since people just go in anticipating anything penders touched to suck they don't even bother to think about her for longer than half a second.

js fills a niche that, imo, could always use filling, especially with regards to girl characters, which is to say shes a well meaning asshole. shes incredibly blunt, she's pessimistic (immediately assumes knuckles must be dead when enerjak returns and they cant find him, tells knuckles not to search a fallen ship that his mother was on because shes probably dead and she doesnt think he'd want to see that). shes terrible at handling interpersonal conflict (knuckles confesses to her that he feels guilty and stressed over all the pressure put on him as guardian and she scolds him and says "this isn't just about you", which results in a minor shouting match when she really had zero intention of starting an argument), she's almost constantly beefing with vector (tbf its because hes sexist he refuses to see past her history as a member of the dark legion). these might suond like cons but i love characters like this LOL and they fit especially well in archie where people love to get mad at each other and make dumb mistakes and it just feels very genuine and interesting and endearing to me. shes rough and difficult but she's also DEEPLY loyal. she'd die for knuckles and the chaotix and the way she interacts with them always makes me soooo ........ im just gonna give some examples i can find.

^ this was the genuine conclusion of an argument they had and im obsessed with it because both of them suck with emotions so they both give the worlds strangest apology and know that the other means it and they move on. plus putting her arm in front of SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG while theyre confronting eggman even after watching him CHAOS BLAST, primarily because she feels like this is more her fight than his (its about knuckles).

theres def more and i could find them if i was more on top of archie but unfortunately im #narutopilled rn. BUT ANYWAYS. shes just a very fun character with a messy personality and fun interactions and she loves her buddies sm even tho she bickers with them. shes just very special. she fits well with knuckles in a way that makes their relationship actually feel plausible instead of just forcing him to have a girlfriend (tho ofc the writing is fumbled sometimes like. ITS ARCHIE. bffr. but thats the case with literally everything ever in archie so you take what you can and its amazing). also see below. BASED AS FUCKKKKKKK

and ill discuss my au briefly bc u r asking me my opinion on js and that does play a large role in how i feel abt her, but rly im just expanding on elements of her story that werent discussed as fully as i wouldve liked. her relationship with lien-da is obviously BAD in canon, but theres not a lot of time spent lingering on precisely how lien-da and kragok feel about julie-su as the product of their fathers second marriage to a woman they KILLED because they hated her so much. ive also given her much more internal strife over turning away from the legion, originally joining the chaotix planning to betray them from the inside then being slowly convinced to join them for real after realizing how much she'd been brainwashed by the legion and what its like to have people who truly love and care about you. her story as someone who is trying to find herself outside of her history as a child soldier is something that TOTALLY deserves to be expanded on and its a bit sad that it wasnt explored. but i mean really im not changing her actual PERSONALITY at all because as i discussed shes oozing with it.... im honestly never going to make the full comic i wanted to so at some point im just going to compile all the lore and concept art and stuff into one big post to share. but thats like a spoiler free taste.

she also has a gun. which is fucking awesome because not enough sonic characters have guns. people make shadow the guy with a gun but he hasnt been seen with one since shth. hello....

essentially, when he was first introduced he was still edgy, thats to be expected, but like not outright horrible. he's now kinda been reduced to just being sonic's edgy mean rival in most media. granted he does seem to be getting better in some things???? but. yeah

after sonic heroes sega basically just ignored his whole characterization in favor of making him a bland badass edgy boy and ignoring his personality, backstory, and what makes him edgy and angry in the first place (it's love)

because of the absolute Monstrosity that was the Archie Sonic The Hedgehog Comics and retconning his canon death due to massive demand from the audience way back when Sonic Adventure 2 first released, Shadow went from a mysterious and traumatized character with a kickass design, to one of the most shallow and inconsistently written characters in the franchise. Before, he was soft-spoken, yet still held his cold exterior, keeping people an arm's length away, but since the Ken Pender-ification, his character isn't allowed to have 'friends', isn't allowed to show emotions unless it is anger or aloofness, isn't allowed to really change and grow past his trauma and past, and even changed his voice to be more 'edgy' compared to the softer voice direction given to him in SA2. Just until recently with the IDW comics finally being able to have a very minute change to Shadow to make it feel more in-line to what his character actually is, Shadow has been always inconsistent and underutilized in canon due to SEGA's fear of history repeating itself and instead of trusting good writers to know what they're doing, they just gatekeep him and only give the fans shitty scraps of a stereotypical angry goth man who hates everyone because of his traumatic past.

in his introductory game he was edgy but clearly still good if a little misguided (he made a promise to a character who was essentially his sister, who ended up being killed by the government precanon, that he'd protect the earth but was brainwashed into trying to destroy it for revenge) and in the idw comics (semi recently??? the idw comics are ongoing but this wasnt released like last week or anything) sonic told him not to do something and he quite literally said ""cowards run. i win."" and did the exact thing sonic told him not to do (he ended up being turned into basically a zombie as a result)

I never read Archie. I don't give a shit about Scourge. I was there in the 2000s and I can assure you Knuckles and Silver were not spared from the mockery. And I think both Dracula and Lenore are horrible creatures who should have not been portrayed as tragic meow meows. In fact, I agree that the writing of NFCV played favorites! But not in the way Lenector shippers think :P

First of all, this is a Penders-ism. The whole Light Mobius plotline seems to have been thought up by him, same for coupling Tails with Mina. All the romance stuff in Archie involving Tails is really weird as is, anyways. And if you're really over here looking to a super niche strange part of pre-SGW Archie just have an excuse to be able to fuck the character who's been known for being the child prodigy of the series, you really, really need to reconsider trajectory here. Please, for the love of god. It's fine if you want to imagine Tails as an adult for writing opportunities, or to examine what that would look like from a design perspective, maybe play with the whole Kitsune angle and mess around with the tail count, but if you're doing all that for the sake of being able to fuck him, in no universe could I ever endorse that, and I really think no one should. It's fucking weird. Fuck off.

I find it so funny how things like mickey mouse and mario can and have been perfectly adapted into any medium with each iteration perfectly matching the core spirit of their main series (aside from that live action mario movie) but sonic getting a comic that matches the games is somehow too ridiculous of a concept to ask for. Maybe the real answer is to stop hiring people who can't handle making a sonic adaptation to work on sonic adaptations.

im not really sure what the tone of this ask is supposed to be but i Know that ken penders and the particularly bad parts of archie sonic are the reason sega acts the way they do with the current comics and im not against sega having rules and being strict with the characters? ive read archie sonic ive seen what can happen when people are just allowed to do whatever they want with no input from sega and i do not want a repeat of that at all. the only rules that i know about and actually have a problem with are the ones that require shadow to be sonics asshole rival who has no friends and the one that says sonic isnt allowed to show much negative emotion

Well after I finally vented off about sexy characters being questioned their value in the other introduction first post is time we get to her personality and characterization cause just like Amy, Rouge had for a while a really mean interpretation of her, just like Amy was portrayed a lot as a whiny pushy sonic stalker Rouge has been portrayed as a... Mean bitch in the bad sense 🤦😑

It is true that in her debut she was like that at first: really selfish, unapologetically mean, thoughtless, irrational.... But those things changed right at the climax of the game and it proved that she learned to be mindful of the consequences of certain actions and that she can be influenced by the "good" and that she deep down was empathetic and caring.

So there was so many times I disliked a lot what they did with her personality in games and comics cause to me SHE ISN'T LIKE THAT!🤬🤬

Like for example, as greedy as she is i can't believe they would make her work with scourge and do things like seducing and kissing KNUCKLES FATHER 🤢 just what the fuck? I'm not putting that image cause... Just NO hell! Bit it's real guys for those who didn't know the only kiss scene that this bat girl ever had was with the fucking knuckles the echidna FATHER, was this some kind of mockery for Knuxrouge fans? Cause in this universe certain Julie su aka "knuckles soulmate cousin"🙄🙄 exists... Really Archie you did her dirty in your dark era...

But not only this, speaking about Julie su... (Ajjj fucking Ken penders and your reign of evil and your damn echidnas armie!) Remember in the Archie comics where Julie su exists she was used to make her look like a total evil asshole compared to Julie su cause apparently Julie herself wasn't good enough so they needed to make bitchy other loved character so she could always be seen as the best option for knuckles 🙄😑 Julie actually almost called her that 🤬 but at least Rouge put her in her place even if that made her look like the bad one.

Seriously 😒. Rouge is a mischievous flirt, but I don't see natural that her character would go this far! She is too confident and independent to be competing with other girls for a guy!! It doesn't matter she likes the guy, i bet if she sees she doesn't have a chance she will just tough it out and keep doing her life.

But they didn't only put her antagonizing Julie, they also made her be like the antagonist girl of a teenager movie group of girlfriends 😑🤦 Stop please STOP, (thank goodness it actually stopped 😌) really this 👇👇 was really awful cause I believe Rouge and Amy is a potential underrated friendship and putting them like this with Rouge underestimating and deceiving them like that AJJJJJJ what the hell? Are you trying to make me hate rouge? You won't succeed because I know that's not her true person!

But the worst part of this ☝️☝️ you see? She is with the team Dark complete, remember when I said Rouge worst attitude changed at SA2 climax? Well in her SH appearance she was absolutely friendly and caring with her team, the team she formed, the one she is often the voice of reason and the mother hen cause the other guys tend to be stubborn and impulsive... How much she cared about Shadow in that game and worried about him even though her goal was shallow and greedy she still genuinely wanted to help him and showed sadness thinking he might be a robot, the same sadness at the end of SA2 when sonic gave her his bracelet and she asked if he thought he was really made to be a weapon and sadly looking through the space ship window until knuckles talks to her like trying to comfort her...😭😭

It's not like i disliked this shadow and this omega but if you have to make rouge the cruel selfish jerk one purposely to make them shine something is really wrong because also I don't think shadow would like to team up with someone with this attitude.

Plus its unnecessary you know? Degrading a character to make look good others is a cheap writer move.

But it didn't happened only in the old comics, it also happens in some games like the cursed Sonic riders 3... She along with Amy and Shadow were total dicks! 🤬🤬 I also disliked her in Sonic battle (except for her interaction with shadow) and Sonic chronicles though fortunately that is not cannon anymore...

You see, when they do this to her it feels like is a complete shallow interpretation of her and is so unfair because her character is better than that! And can be used better... And you know I'm right cause things got better with time, see you in the next part talking about Rouge real good characteristics

What's your opinion on Sally Acorns decrepit father?

Pre-reboot? An incompetent asshole whose complete lack of leadership ability justified the monarchy losing some of its power. Ideally, it should've lost all of its power. Funny how Penders wrote Acorn as having unparalleled, uncontestable wisdom and judgment based on his connection to the Source of All yet practically every single one of his decisions was to the detriment of his kingdom, his children and his people.

Honestly playing Sonic Frontiers made me think about how Ian Flynn basically has the career Ken Penders wishes he could have,

Like yeah, Flynn’s writing can be contentious, esp the idw era stuff but he has a genuine love  for the franchise and treats his coworkers with respect while Ken. just. didn’t.

Like even putting aside the deranged things Penders wrote during his tenure on Archie’s Sonic, the man is a massively unpleasant asshole. He constantly disparages other creators, actively screwed over his coworkers, and is constantly trying to make sonic fans pay attention to him by saying dumb shit.

Like he wants to be the cool uncle of sonic or whatever but he screwed over the franchise for a better part of a decade. And like yeah, he’d have a point about creator’s rights if he weren’t a selfish prick, but that’s the thing. He is.

the archie sally family drama infuriates me so much bc like. her dad was actually pretty chill in the og tv show. but penders has issues so we have to make him an asshole and like i can kinda understand changing it around for story reasons but then penders goes out of his way to make the abusive dad right which is so fucking evil of him like. christ ~autisticshadow

god king max sucks SOOO bad in the comics. like i already didnt really like him because i dislike monarchies in fiction (i know i know its just. theyre boring i cant stand them) and then penders wrote him to be this misogynist asshole who cant even be nice to his own children and never apologizes and is ~bound with the source~ and i hate his guts if i saw that squirrel on the street then well. i cant say
