I don’t know what up with Lin Manuel Miranda playing remorsefully shitty fathers who are vaguely responsible for their sons death but I’m glad the dude’s found his niche

🚨percy jackson show and heroes of olympus spoilers🚨

i like how in the new episode they’re kind of setting up percy not being completely comfortable in the water like how in son of neptune he develops a fear of drowning like thalia has a fear of flying. i think it ties more into the theme of him being afraid of who he is which annabeth pointed out last episode. anyways loving the show so far and the part where percy shoved annabeth and grover through the door made me scream.

I'm really anxious about what they'll do with Medusa's story in this third episode but also really excited. I saw some people say she was gonna have a more tragic story.
I'm anxious because I don't want her to be fully redeemed. To me it's a very important and iconic part of the book that she gets killed, and that her head is sent to Olympus by Percy. I liked all of the changes so far, but I really want that to stay. It's also necessary for the ending with Sally and Gabe. Like, if it's done well, I could still like it, so we'll see of course, but I would prefer if they keep that from the book. My biggest fear for this first season of the show, is that she won't get killed.
But I'm also excited because there's still a really good possibility with that tragedy thing. Imagine her story being tragic, and she's mean and angry at Percy because of her backstory with Poseidon, and Percy is still forced to kill her because she's attacking them, or she dies one way or another. Sending her head to Olympus would be SO MUCH MORE impactful, then. Not only as a provocation to the gods, but also as a way for Percy to tell Poseidon : "look at what you've done to her. Look at the lives you ruined. Look at the consequences of your own actions." or something like that. It would really fit the anger they gave him against Poseidon, anger that seems to be much more important in the show than the book, so it would be a really good plotline and a really good way to show it. To show how Percy is kinda thinking the same way as Luke. To show how Medusa is still suffering, her and so much people, because of the gods.
But for now we don't know. I think I'm gonna like the path they chose anyway because this show didn't disappoint me for these first episodes, but if I could chose right now, I think I would prefer the second option. The first could still be interesting depending on what they do about that in the next episodes, but still. We'll see, I guess.

Okay I know I’m late but I just watched PJO episode 7!
SPOILERS FOR SHOW AND BOOKS AHEAD
We get so much more Sally POV!! I am here for it honestly
The fact that Poseidon showed up for Sally when she prayed to him?! MAN this is a change I can stand by. It shows so much more depth to Poseidon’s character, shows that he is fully aware of how much his family sucks but that he is still bound by its rules. He is still powerless to stand up to the norms of Olympus. He knows he can’t interfere in Percy’s life because it would be 1. Acknowledging that he’s his son and 2. Would make him a target for an insta kill like Zeus killed Maria Di Angelo & tried to kill Bianca and Nico. Don’t tell me Poseidon didn’t know about that.
The RAGE on Percy’s face in the preview during his fight with Ares! YES. GIVE ME FERAL PERCY.
The little scene preview of Luke clapping Percy on the back during the foreworks JDKDKDKFKRK BOOK READERS Y’ALL KNOW WHATS COMING
I am really interested in the moment on the Fields of Asphodel when Annabeth gets rooted to the ground by regret. This is a significant change from the books and honestly I liked this one too. Especially Annabeth’s line, “I trust your dad.” If you noticed, she calls Athena, “mother” but she calls Poseidon Percy’s “dad.” It is doing so much set up with just two simple words.
But also! What is she rooted by? Regret for Thalia’s death? She was six! Regret for Percy getting turned into gold? He did that shit intentionally. Honestly there’s so much that baby Annabeth could be regretting but I think it’s Thalia’s death. Especially because she’s seeing what happens after death here. So she can’t help but imagine her friend Thalia. Being turned into a tree in life. To prevent her from… being turned into a tree, only in death.
And of course there’s Elysium and rebirth and the fields of punishment. But most people go to the fields of Asphodel.
The change of the Fields of Asphodel having people wander around aimlessly to being turned into trees rooted to the ground unmoving is interesting. It felt a little like an intentional parallel to Thalia. But I wonder if it’s based in any Greek myth lore
Grover being eaten by Cerberus not gonna lie I was worried about our resident goat boy!! But it makes sense for him to be the one to lose his pearl. Even though it also could’ve worked with Annabeth
Not gonna lie I was a little disappointed that Annabeth wasn’t the one to almost fall into Tartarus instead of Grover. That would’ve been an AMAZING parallel to the fall into Tartarus later in the series. Heroes of Olympus.
Hades is characterized a little differently. More friendly? More animated? Lmao lively. He gives queer or metrosexual energy. He still has his unbothered attitude about the godly affairs which sets him apart from other Olympians
CRUSTY’S. Okay. I was excited that they included the scene with Crusty. But again, I felt like it was another moment of “Percy knows too much”. He immediately knew who Crusty was, I assume because Hermes told him. He knew how the bed trap worked. He knew about the secret passage to the underworld. I just. I don’t like how the series just GIVES Percy and the trio so much information or they just HAVE it. It’s one of my biggest critiques of the show. Give me clueless Percy asking Annabeth who someone is from Greek myths. Give me Annabeth’s AHA moment when she remembers a Greek myth and puts in context with their situation. I wanna see the trio being so fucking confused and have to work to figure out who they’re up against.
Even Percy realizing that it’s Kronos in his dreams! It felt like something mundane and not a big revelation.
I like the gold percy and gold Sally Jackson parallel. That was good.
I’m so excited to see Percy kick so God of War ass (well, ankle) next episode!
I have more thoughts but have these ones for now

In love with the latest percy jackson episode. The Amtrak mention? Ares starting twitter fights? Grover and Ares bonding over Obscure Wars and being angry at Athena (and her kids, if this is a little resentment from Grover)? Grover outtalking the God of War by agreeing with him? Annabeth getting to flex her mechanics skills?
SEAWEED BRAIN?????? Percy sacrificing himself for Annabeth again because she's just Better Than Him? Annabeth breaking down over having to let Percy go, because he was so wrong about her motives?
"You think you had to ask?"
Annabeth telling off Hephaestus directly, turning down Athena's approval for Percy, because of Percy's rhetoric? And it working??
I'm losing it. It's all so good.

Poseidon surrendering the war with Zeus, willing to admit so in front of the whole council, all so his son could live after back-talking his bitchy god uncle is making me feel shit. 10/10 change from the books I regret ever doubting that decision

With all these 'you need to show not tell!' critiques, recently I'm getting the feeling people have forgotten what that actually means. Specifically with the Percy Jackson show, I've heard this complaint a lot - and how they're "leaving stuff out" that was explained (told) at the beginning of the book. There's this simultaneous critique that 'they're leaving stuff out' and 'they're telling too much exposition' which, watching the show, it makes it really seem like literally nothing will satisfy them.
Specifically, let's talk about Grover's desire to become a searcher:
I heard from a lot of people who read the books that they're doing Grover a disservice because they 'took away' his narrative goal. But how did we know this was his goal in the book? He point blank told Percy. In the show, we're seeing what he values, we're seeing his distress at the destruction of the natural world, and we're seeing why he might either have or grow to have the desire to become a searcher for Pan.
Showing vs telling can take time. Showing vs telling might make those who already know feel like it's been forgotten/the character (or world) isn't as fleshed out as they know they are after having read all 5+ books.
I think the show is doing a great job at showing when it comes to character development/goals while they relegate the cliffnotes of the world building to telling. They tell the stuff that, naturally, would be told to someone just walking into this new world of half-bloods. We don't exactly want Percy to be wandering around without people just telling him the basics of what he needs to know to survive. However, the bigger things, the things about the world that the adults think only they should know, that's being shown to us over the course of the show - not info dumped on us. That leads to some thinking stuff is left out or that they're relying on viewers to have read the books to understand the story. Neither of which is the case based on the show-only reactions I've seen.
You're supposed to feel like Percy isn't being told everything because this is a middle grade story and a massive point of many of them is adults not telling the kid protagonists things - you know, mimicking the real world and the frustrations many kids have growing up and having the 'important' info withheld from them because they're "too young to understand."
Showing vs telling the character motivations/growth helps us really connect to them because we see, over time, who they are. (Annabeth's 'telling' of her motivations makes sense in context because, like Grover being a failed protector, it's her starting point in the story - the place where she grows from - and gives the viewer a better understanding of why this random girl is so interested in Percy and the quest).
Telling vs showing sets up the base-line understanding of the world. Showing vs telling certain world building (usually related directly to plot development) details gives the feeling of shock or dawning/changing understanding of what one thought they knew of the world.
Showing and telling both have their place in narratives - it's important to know which one is needed where and what purpose they serve. And yeah, showing might take a lot longer than just telling, so if you're all about stories showing stuff, you're going to need a little patience and to just sit down, shut up, and you know, actually watch the show.

SO THIS EPISODE
Ok first with the thing I didn't like. Honestly I LOVED this episode, my only disappointment is that the bus didn't explode. But I guess we can't have anything.
Also the poodle wasn't there but honestly knowing they had to cut scenes, I expected it and it wasn't disturbing to me.
Now.
The oracle was there (we all knew it was gonna be except some people apparently ?? But anyway it was perfect)
The reasons Percy had for chosing Grover and Annabeth made so much sense. I loved it.
Medusa ??? It was EXACTLY what I wanted for this episode omg, I wasn't expecting that much !!
Yk, I knew they wanted to make her more tragic, and I knew there was no way the "cutting her head off" scene was going to happen in a Disney kid show, so I was so afraid they wouldn't kill her, but also I wanted a "she's tragic but attacks them and dies anyway" thing to happen so bad...
And it's exactly what happened !!!
Her being invisible while they cut her head off ??? This was the SMARTEST censorship I've seen in my entire life, a very good way to keep the scene but stay appropriate for a kid show at the same time
And then Percy said the thing ! He said it he said the "I am impertinent" line !!!
Also, the interactions the trio had the whole episode ? It sets up their dynamic so well !
So yeah, honestly, I was disappointed by the bus not exploding and all, but besides that, everything was just perfect !!!
Next episode will be the chimera and the arch ??? I CAN'T WAIT for that. I can't 😭
