10 portrait inspiration
Masahisa Fukase was born in the town of Bifuka in the Nakagawa District, Hokkaido, Japan in 1934, the son of a successful local studio photographer. He graduated from Nihon University College of Art’s Photography Department in 1956, and became a freelance photographer in 1968 following brief stints at the Nippon Design Center and Kawade Shobo Shinsha Publishers.  In the mid 1970s he set up a photographic school, The Workshop, with Daido Moriyma and Shomei Tomatsu.
Tumblr media
Fukase is considered as one of the most comprehensive and experimental photographers of the post-war generation in Japan. He became world-renowned for his photographic series and  ensuing publication Karasu made between 1975 and 1982 in the wake of his wife Yōko Wanibe divorcing him. The visual narrative of the series revolves around the anthropomorphic form of the raven, which is widely celebrated as a photographic masterpiece. And yet a majority of his work remained largely inaccessible to the public for over two decades. In 1992 Fukase developed  permanent brain damage after a tragic fall, and it was only after his death in 2012 that his archives  of work were gradually disclosed to the public. Since then a wealth of material has surfaced that had never previously been shown.
His work has been exhibited widely at institutions such as MoMA, New York, the Oxford Museum of Modern Art, the Foundation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, and the Victoria & Albert Museum London. His work is held in major collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and The Getty Museum. He is also the winner of prizes including the 2nd Ina Nobuo Award, as well as the Special Award at the 8th Higashikawa Photography Awards.
Tumblr media
At a first glance, Masahisa Fukase's Bukubuku might feel like an amusing , diverting, however shows a darker take on the self portrait.  childhood memories of playing around in the bathtub. However, delving deeper into his biography, the black and white images of the Japanese photographer, taken in 1991, alone and submerged in his bathtub are symbolic of the isolation and loneliness he felt at the time.
Tumblr media
Once a primary focus of his work, his marriage to second wife Yōko Wanibe, gaining him recognition as a photographer who only photographed his wife and reflecting on this again aafter his divorce on in his work Karasu.
Tumblr media
Each individual project made by Fukase has a totally different matrix and subject. He did not use the same printing styles nor photography techniques for each project. This is most unusual and it is one of the elements that makes him so very special,” says Hoppen. Explaining his fascination with the work, which took him eight months to acquire, he explains, “I initially found myself being reminded how similar the Japanese and British sense of humour is (when viewing Bukubuku). The work seemed flippant and comical. But on closer inspection and after speaking to many close acquaintances of Fukase, I learnt that he saw this very much as a performance piece of work and this it was shaped by Fukase as an introspective and mournful soliloquy to his ex-wife Yoko, just after he learnt that she had gotten remarried.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taken over a two-month period with a Nikonos camera, Bukubuku was Fukase's last ever published photo book, with the prints never seen outside of Japan – instead, remaining secure in a box after they were first shown in Japan in 1992. Hoppen adds, “The work was made on a marvellous camera designed for underwater photography and had a flash incorporated into the camera. The flash, when used, utilises the wonderful refractive qualities that water has. It is quite brilliant in every sense.”

My Portrait
Tumblr media
So for my self portrait I've used two images to make one result, my inspiration was an album cover that I like, because I was using two pictures I decided to show two versions of myself, my first instinct was to make it a more literal show of this with objects on show etc, but I decided to just show a more put together version of myself beside tired me after I've been to work. I used a light and dark contrast and didn't match the pictures up exactly to match the style of the album cover I liked.

Moving Portrait Final Video Evaluation
youtube
My Moving Portrait is a video about Glasgow Caledonian University's Mens Rugby team. I wanted my Moving Portrait project and my Ten Portraits project to be linked together somehow. I took my camera with me the first time just to take photos I never even thought of taking my video there too however the second game I did, I stayed and took videos and photos throughout the game and I quite like the result. The one thing I would change would be the amount of videos I took, initially I thought I took them in an abundance however when it came to editing I was surprised by how many I had taken that I didn't want to include at all such as many videos of the spectator area of the field. There were many ideas I had had about this project before attempting it such as some of the sketch ideas I noted, there were quite a few I really wanted to shoot but never got the chance, whether it was because they didn't do it or I never asked them to do it. For example the team run outs onto the field, we see it all the time in professional games of rugby and football where the team comes out of the tunnel all together and the noise you hear is the boots on the concrete as they run onto the pitch. I wanted to capture that for myself however the team came out one at a time and clashed with the other teams players leaving the changing rooms as well and it didn't make for a good shot. Shots I never thought of getting though which I loved was of Jake (Vice Captain) kissing my camera and of the boys celebrating when they score a try. Aspects I didn't enjoy about my moving portrait was the focus was off in shots which didn't make the entertaining shot, entertaining to watch. I have many different shots from the game that were just shit just from the fact of them being grainy. I was also not very successful with the amount of videos I took, if I were to do a video again of the Mens Rugby I would like to have accumulated a high amount of quality reasonable videos that show different parts of the game. In a way the video shows the game from start to finish with the first shot being the men walk to the pitch and the final shot being of Jake with the final score. There were videos I added in through out the moving portrait that were no chronologically correct however them being placed there I think personally made a nice connection showing where they started (the warm up) and where the finished (winners). Again if I were to do this again I would look more into the technical side of videography within sports researching it with being outdoors as well as the settings would need to change more often as the weather changed. All in all however, I really enjoyed working with the Cale Mens Rugby team and have been asked to return to photograph them in February when the season starts again which makes me feel professional and that I did a good job at the games I went to.

Photo Imaging - self portrait
I have been looking at Andy Warhol, i previously looked at his work and he has shot self portraits that i find quite inspiring. Most of the self portraits are up-close and quite simple in terms of lighting and framing. But what i like about them is the soft focus and how the focus just gently falls off his face.
I also think the focal length of the lens also plays a part in the overall human and ‘3D’ aspect of it all. If i was to take an educated guess i think it would be shot on a 50mm at 1.4 or 1.8. What could also create a similar effect to this would be using a medium format camera and a 35mm lens as a 35 on MF is the equivalent to 50mm on a FF camera.
Another key to making this successful is absolutely making sure the focus is spot on, since the image is so close to the subjects face i think having the focus just off, for example on the ears would completely take away from the image.
Thankfully i am able to hook my camera up to my phone which allows me to remotely trigger my camera, so in theory it should be straight forward enough. Another part of replicating the photo is having very soft light. Ideally i would like to have a roll of proper diffusion paper to drape over a window but i think a white bedsheet would do just as well.

10 portrait inspiration
Steve Jansen the former drummer of Japan and brother of David Sylvian has had a very impressive career in photography, his most notable collection being 'through a quiet window' which he shot while on tour, these photographs include bandmates and fellow musicians Masami Tsuchiya, Richard Barbieri, David Sylvian, Mick Karn and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Tumblr media
The composition of all photographs included in 'Through a Clear Window' are faultless, I usually wasn't a fan of cropped photographs cutting of the top of the subjects head or a lamppost or umbrella but I see how doing this in perhaps the use of minimising negative space, improving the photograph, making it more intimate for the view or drawing you in to the more important details. The use of composition especially lines in my opinion is genius andvery effective while subtly observed by the user, clearly seen in the photographs on this slide.
Tumblr media
My favourite photograph by Steve Jansen would  have to be this shot of Mick Karn, who was the bassist of new wave band Japan as well as doing personal projects along with Jansen. Karn sadly passed away in January 2011 after receiving an advanced-stage cancer diagnosis. In my opinion it shows the love Jansen and Karn shared away from the limelight and glamour of Japan, enjoying the simplicity of life and even though I thnk they are musical geniuses this photograph shows the normality of life and enjoyment in friendship between friends, brothers and bandmates. Self Portrait Research and planning
I'd like a self portrait approach with no rules, a more fun approach showing me in a more literal sense rather than abstract emotions shown in a deep thought provoking way.
Herb Ritts
Tumblr media
Herb Ritts is a famous fashion photographer who began working professionally in the late 70's. He won many awards for his fine art work and also directed music videos too. HIs work has featured in The Rolling Stone and Vouge magazine to name a few.
I like his self portrait work because his eyes are always captured in such a striking way. They are wide and wild looking adding a sense of craziness and unknown which really compliments his known creative personality. Only his eyes are sharp which really draws you right in. The dark glasses add even more contrast to the whites of his eyes as well making them pop out. His pose is unusual swell showing his hands. which I think is good as photographers work with their hands so they are very much part of them. the hands are also face framing too. the eye contact and the hands looking through to the camera lens adds a connection to the viewer.
Cindy Sherman
Tumblr media
Cindy Sherman's portraits are very much fun and themed and her trying to look like something else but her eyes always stay the same so you known that's a constant throughout all her self portraits. They are usually from a time period or fantasy and quite weird and creepy sometimes. I like her creativity and use of face paint , makeup and props to transform a look and add colour and history.
Tumblr media
Ideas and Planning
I like this album cover for Beabadoobee's Fake it Flowers album. Its her face divided into two and I though this could be usual in showing two sides to a person as sometimes I feel I live a double life. With this idea I might have the first glance, maybe more superficial version of me and the other side something showing more interest.
Tumblr media
This photograph was taken by her photographer friend Amir Hossain, who is an artist, photographer and director based in London.
Styling and what it portrays about me
I think for styling my portrait ill dress in an outfit I really like and also for the more mundane side something more regular but still me. I want to add 'props to the side of interest maybe like my headphones and paint in some album covers that i like since music and art make up a lot of what I'm interested in, for more deeper side of myself is shown just by the fact I'm split in tow as going home means I have to pair back my appearances and hide a lot of what makes me me.
I'm going to try full length and different poses as well.
