Owl "Horns"
Tumblr media
You know those horns/ear thingies some owls (such as the great horned owl) have?
Those are called plumicorns, plumi (from plume) meaning feather and corn meaning horn, quite an apt name as they resemble horns and are tufts of feathers.
Owls use them to display emotion, raised plumicorns likely indicate the owl is acting defensively, making itself look larger, though, they may also be used to alter the owl's silouhette and general shape, allowing it to camouflage better.

12 Silence facts YOU may not know about!
Tumblr media
1) Her full name was meant to be "Olivia Hermer" (赫默 "hèmò" in chinese), and her codename was "Silent". But due to inconsistencies, she became Olivia Silence outside of the chinese version, where she is named Hermer. This can be seen in the official artbook.
Tumblr media
2) She is able to shapeshift her arms into wings, as confirmed by her designer, NoriZC. This can be seen in the artbook, but also in her Lacquer and Frosted Breath skins.
Tumblr media
3) Silence used to be able to summon three drones rather than one. Their range were also different, being 4x3 rather than 3x3.
Tumblr media
4) Her earlier design shows her without an infection monitor, and without infection at all.
Tumblr media
5) The symbol of Rhine Lab was supposed to be ressembling of an owl, surely in reference to Silence, who might have been supposed to play a bigger role.
Tumblr media
6) She is one of the very few characters to have a base animation on her default skin.
Tumblr media
7) On her default skin, when used in battle, her plumicorns (the tufts on her head) become longer. This is something that has been changed on her skins, where they are the same size in both the base and battle sprites.
Tumblr media
8) She is often shown winking on official art, especially on NoriZC's art. This is a reference to how owls blink one eye at a time to keep their vision when blinking.
Tumblr media
9) Silence the Paradigmatic hasn't been illustrated by NoriZC's, her creator, but by Juri Jiuhao.
Tumblr media
10) It appears that she used to have telekinesis Arts in the earliest versions, but it has never been shown again.
Tumblr media
11) Her illustrator, NoriZC, has designed a Fakemon version of her, as well as Saria and Ifrit, where she is a Plant/Flying Pokemon.
Tumblr media
12) pizza

mx. owl video i need to know do owls have ears and if not can they hear things. i know some of em have the lil spikes on the top of their head that i imagine are ear adjacent but not all of em do. also i hope you have a nice day/night
Tumblr media
Other than having huge eyes and being able to turn their head 270° in any direction, owls are probably best known for their incredible sense of hearing. Owls, much like all other known birds do indeed have ears. They’re just under the feathers.
Tumblr media
This is an owl ear. That gray-blue lump near the front is actually the back of the owl’s eye, but everything else there is just ear.
Tumblr media
Compared to other birds, owls do have rather large ears which are protected by a flap of skin and layers of feathers.
Tumblr media
The “spikes” you refer to on top of some of their heads are just feathers, referred to as feather tufts, horns, or plumicorns (meaning “feather horn”) depending on who you ask.
Tumblr media
This one has had its feathers messed up somehow, same species as previous to show that they really are just feathers.
Tumblr media
Primary function of these tufts of feathers is just to assist in blending in with forest surroundings, a large round owl head stands out less when there’s something to remove that roundness. These feathers are also used in owl body language, particularly when threatening a rival
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, yes, owls can hear. They can hear far better than we can. Better than most canines and felines as well.
Tumblr media
Owls such as this great gray can only find food in the winter by hearing its beating heart or breathing under a foot of snow while the owl perches several yards above.
Tumblr media
The barn owl family has even greater hearing than that, having some of the best auditory skills of any terrestrial animals. Their hearing is so acute that they can hunt in complete darkness, and no, that isn’t something all nocturnal carnivores do. No matter how advanced the eye, if there isn’t even a tiniest hint of light from the moon or stars, an animal can’t see. Nocturnal eyes are large and designed to see by absorbing as much light as possible to see. A completely blind barn owl could still hunt (but would not survive in the wild because it would be unable to avoid crashing into obstacles in flight).
Tumblr media
Their secret? Well, it’s just the same adaptation as what other owls use to hear so well taken to the extreme: the facial disk. A mammal like a fox or bat directs sounds into its ears by having a cone-shaped outer ear that can be maneuvered to capture sound from different angles. Owls make their entire face serve that purpose, collecting sound waves by turning their facial feathers into a satellite dish.
Tumblr media
Barn owls also have a seamless fringe of feathers down the center of their face which other owls tend to lack, this more or less splits sound waves into traveling down one side of the face to one ear or the other side of the face to the other ear. If the sound hits one ear first or more intensely than it hits the other, the owl knows which way to turn its head.
Tumblr media
To add another layer to this, owls have one high ear, and one low ear. The degree of asymmetry varies based on species, the barn owl family has the most pronounced difference in ear placement. Having offset ears allows owls to determine if a sound is coming from above or below.
Tumblr media
When an owl hears a sound hit both ears at the exact same time, it knows it’s directly facing the source, and when that source is a mouse or perhaps a vole, it’s go-time.

hooty and charlie drawings Rated
first i came for the live action hawkman and hawkgirl wings... then for their comic book counterparts... now without further ado, i introduce you to an extensive rating of hootie and charlie illustrations done by comic book artists who have seemingly never seen an owl in their lives. i will be using the spelling "hootie" even though comics are very inconsistent about whether it's spelled with a y or an ie.
this post is going to be pretty long, so everything is under the cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this hootie is a 4/10. we're starting off strong with a golden age contender. despite the low rating, i really like the care that went into illustrating this little guy. is it possible to tell what kind of owl he is? not really. but you know, that's okay. he can be greateasternscreechhorned. he's got the spirit. and i love how talkative he is. however, seeing this makes me wonder what went so wrong with hawkman's wings in the same era...
Tumblr media
this hootie is a 4/10. just a little guy! not sure what's happening with his beak but that's okay because he's just little. once more i am fond of the golden age's owl illustrations.
Tumblr media
this hootie is a 5/10. he is extremely Eyes. here we have a rare interpretation of hooty as an owl that is clearly not in the bubo genus and is instead... i dunno. strix? maybe? i can't tell what species he is but you know what i'll let it slide because he is So Eyes.
Tumblr media
this hootie is a 8/10, despite being from the same issue as the one above. clearly a strix owl now, probably a barred although the coloring is more similar to a tawny. i won't hold coloring choices against them quite yet though. we've got the right proportions, we've got some chest barring, we're doing good.
Tumblr media
this hootie is a 1/10 but it does make me cry laughing every time i look at him so that's gotta count for something.
Tumblr media
this hootie (XIV) is a 2/10. just an assortment of lines that runs around charles' office. points for being beth's friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this charlie is a 8/10. not much detail going on but we can put that down to the stylization. the eyes are the right color for a great-horned owl and i can see a female being that size. her plumicorns being in a relaxed position is cute. i do think that the method of summoning her with a piece of raw chicken was a terrible idea, but i guess no worse that charles feeding hootie lobster off his fork.
Tumblr media
this charlie is a 5/10. hey man What is going on here. the white under the bill is like someone saw the white chest patch great horned owls have and went "awesome, that's all the photo reference i need to see" and then went at it. why is the wing partially white. is that the wing? at least the eyes are still the right color even if they should Not be angled considering owls famously cannot move their eyes at all.
Tumblr media
this charlie is a 8/10. the anatomy is solid with a nicely defined facial disk and the expression without the eyes being able to move is adorable. also realistically huge feet--nobody ever seems to remember how big owl talons are. not much of a defined pattern but i like it.
Tumblr media
this charlie is a 4/10. this looks like an owl i would draw. that's not a compliment. the shape is just a Suggestion. it's close to being good but it does not sell me.
Tumblr media
this charlie is a 2/10. who the Fuck is that. why are they tiny and white.
Tumblr media
this charlie is a 4/10. all the right pieces are there but we could do with some better assemblage, and there's not really any markings. unlike the charlie above that i ranked a 7 there's not even a suggestion of them. could be worse though.
Tumblr media
this charlie is a -1000/10 i fucking hate this thing every time i have to look at it. the longer you stare the worse it gets. utterly abysmal.

Welcome to BIRD FACTS WITH FINCH!
(Special Halloween Edition)
Today's bird is ....
The Great Horned Owl!
Tumblr media
Latin name: Bubo virginianus
Cladistic placement:
Eukaryota
Animalia
Chordata
Dinosauria
Avialae
Neornithes
Neognathes
Strigiformes
Strigidae
Bubo
B. virginianus
Location: North, Central, and South America
Habitat: Forests, mountains, deserts, coasts, you name it. Great horned owls are generalists when it comes to where they live.
Fun facts:
The "horns" on a great horned owl are also called ear tufts, but they are neither horns nor ears. The owl's actual ears are located on the sides of its head, and are covered by feathers.
The technical term for an owl's ear tufts is "plumicorns." The plumicorns do nothing to enchance an owl's already super-accurate sense of hearing, but they may help camouflage the bird.
Owl eyes are so big that they can't move them in their sockets. To make up for this, owls can turn their heads 270 degrees in either direction! They can also tilt their heads almost upside-down!
The soft edges on an owl's wings allow it to fly without making a sound. This gives the owl a huge advantage when it comes to ambushing prey, but it comes at a cost: Owl feathers are not water-resistant like other raptor feathers.

All About Birds
National Geographic Kids Bird Guide of North America (Second Edition)
And last but not least, here's a video of a great horned owl hooting.
youtube
Notice how the owl doesn't open his beak when he's hooting. Instead, he uses his throat as a resonating chamber, kind of like a frog croaking.
This has been BIRD FACTS WITH FINCH! I hope everyone's Halloween is a hoot, and owl return with more bird facts!

The great horned owl is a Superb Owl of the Americas, that is closely related to the eagle-owls found on other continents (baring the results of phylogenetic work that say otherwise).

Got another bird ask coming your way. Do you think Perlica from Endfield is a Liberi? I see some people draw what I see as feathers in her hair as ears. I personally think she's a pretty safe bet for a Liberi, considering what comes up when you google Perlica (apparently the polish name for guinea fowl).
Tumblr media
especially ones with colors like this, for the feathers that is. Numida meleagris, taken from https://hawaiibirdingtrails.hawaii.gov/bird/helmeted-guineafowl-domestic-type/
Tumblr media
I haven't really checked that much into Endfield yet because I'm not really interested (and will never be able to play the game with my toaster of a computer)
Tumblr media
There's apparently no other meaning to Perlica other than the polish name for the guineafowls, and it wouldn't be surprising for a character to be named after the genus or the name for the animal they're based on (Ptilopsis being the scientist name for northen white faced owl, for example)
But I have to say the plumicorns are weird, it really gives owls vibes (afaik, only Silence, Ptilopsis and Cronin (likely based on an owl) have plumicorns), which, well, only horned owls have plumicorns. And guineafowls do NOT have them. it doesn't ressemble the wing ears like Passenger or Irene have, so it's strange.
But she doesn't show other racial traits, she doesn't seem to have a tail or slit pupils like a Feline, and her plumicorns really do like feathers/fur rather than ears.
As for guineafowl, while I see the name, the ressemblance is... It's far from it. Which I'd find disappointing because I LOVE guineafowls feathers, they're seriously beautiful
Tumblr media
Making a character based on one without those patterns is a waste and I am angry at whoever designed her!! /hj
