HEY there's new folks here since I last rambled about Rebelle, and they've got a HUGE sale going on for the preorder of the next version, SO
TL;DR: amazing traditional-paint-emulating drawing program on huge preorder discount, $30 for Pro version GO GET YOU YOURS
I've been using the digital art program Rebelle for a bit over a year, and it is SO GOOD at emulating the feel of working with traditional paints, pencils, and pastels! It's got thick (or thin) impasto texture for oils/acrylics, water physics (!!) for watercolors, and can actually use the texture of your canvas to affect both wet and dry media brushes. It feels SO MUCH better than hooking a texture into a brush and working on a canvas that just...doesn't match it, or applying a texture afterward. BUT ALSO they're gonna be updating it soon, and adding not just standard digital niceties, but also METALLIC. PAINTS. Plus more texture stuff you can control, and even better texture reactivity, but METALLIC! PAINTS!! USING THE BUILT-IN LIGHTING AND TEXTURE SHENANIGANS, INSTEAD OF HAVING TO MESS AROUND WITH WRANGLING/OUTSOURCING EFFECTS YOURSELF
And the pre-order price from now until November 30th is ONLY $30 for the Pro version (which I absolutely recommend!), when the price is usually $150 (!!). The Pro preorder price will increase to $50 from December 1st to the 13th, then full price when it releases on December 14th. And they don't do subscription! Just free updates (typically good and/or requested features, as well as bugfixes), in between full upgrades like this that have been HUGELY discounted on release.
You can check out further info on Version 7's upgrade features, as well as the link to buy it, via the link at the top of the post. BUT if you wanna test out basic watercolor simulation, and/or test the trial version of Rebelle 6 (I think) to see if you like how it feels? You can check out this link: https://www.escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/try/
(Also they often do this sort of thing with the free bonus papers for spreading the word, as mentioned at the beginning of the Version 7 info link. I think it's happened...at least each time they've done a version upgrade, maybe once or twice in between? And it's been a different set of papers each time. But I already did my shared-post earlier. This post is genuinely just 'cause I think stuff like the feel of brushes reacting to visible texture and water physics (which you can pause!) are SO NICE, and the preorder price is bonkers-cheap. I still need side stuff like Affinity for like...fonts, but Rebelle is my current favorite for actual drawing and painting.)
PERSONAL EXAMPLE TIME
Playing around with watercolor drips, because you can control the "tilt" of the canvas (via either a tablet's features if it can, or a disk in the UI if not): Bakuratober Ghost prompt
Using canvas texture to get a RAD cracked-paint look on a dark canvas (I used the Straw canvas from the "Mulberry Coconut & Straw" purchasable paper set): Bakuratober Vampire prompt
Taking advantage of thick acrylic texture (plus watercolor which flowed into the brush streaks for emphasis), to simulate both muscle and sand texture (body horror warning): Bakuratober bonus prompt (Nightmare)
Combining a mildly textured pencil with a subtly textured canvas to emulate how I use physical colored pencils (plus layer effects for glowy ghosties): Bakuratober Dancer prompt
Combining wet canvas and watercolors to let the pigment feather out to create a "blurry" foreground effect (plus setting lineart as a masking fluid layer to keep colors contained): Disco (Elysium) Harmony

2024-01-07 Jenny holding leg in intense worry 😢
Art Timelapse
Thumbnail Timelapse
Art, plus a shadowed version & two thumbnails.(imo, I like the un-shadowed version better, but the shadowed one's starting to grow on me.🙂)
Based off a spur-of-the-moment thumbnail. In the middle of making it, I interpreted it as she’s not feeling “pain” per se (since she doesn’t have nerves); more like slight pressure that she’s cautious could burst.😔
*So sorry!🙇‍♀️Between getting ‘rona again & readjusting, I took a longer break than I intended. Guess this drawing of worry is kinda subconscious😳…Now that I've ruminated on it, it's okay🙂. This was a work-life balance lesson in managing forced breaks (like sickness).
MINI JOURNAL
This was another piece I was exhausted with. Another was the “Jenny slightly pulling back” one. While this “Jenny tending to leg” was over a week, it almost didn't feel any less concentrated with exhaustion.😔Anyways, in both cases, I didn't have too clear of an idea of what the final piece would look like (less so with this new one, as I knew I wanted to keep most of the lines red-orange & color Jenny aqua-green).
Social Media Strategy Tweak
Maybe next time, when in doubt, just keep it a sketch, with no colors or tones??? Tbh, I didnt go that route bc I didn’t want a piece that was too harsh on the eyes from being over a bright white background, but at least a softer white. …Now that I've written it out, it sounds like a dumb reason.😥
Or, was afraid that wasn’t finished enough for IG/social media? Maybe, especially since I wanted to have a red-orange pencil-sketch style in there. Maybe be a little more elaborate & have black cleaner ink lines & grey base tones (like)?
Wait, I just remembered: could do sketches, but do that Natalie Nourigat “draw the pose 5 times” exercise.
The exception will be the Jenny Injured diptych (to still be colored but not further pushes gesture-wise (tbh, I again want to try to get done as quickly as possible)...plus, I'll just say, “something different.” 😉
Personal Preferences & Little Backburner
Imo, I like the shadow-less version. Jenny's legs contrast better with the background, and the colors are closer to what I ended up having in mind.
Yes, even the unconventional red-orange linework with cyan base colors😄. I’d actually been meaning to try that out on a piece; tbh, I just like red-orange/vermilion-colored pencil sketches.😊 I was doing another red-orange pencil, Krita sketch in October that I wanted to try that color scheme on, but the perspective needed retooling.😵‍💫
BTS
I actually had this, along with a thumbnail for a completely different piece, on the backburner. While I wanted to do the other one, I went with this more unclear-looking one. That way, I could finish it before I forgot what I had in mind.
After I was well into the finalized sketch, I found a 2nd, more pushed-gesture version of one of  the thumbnails. That’s when I decided to try not to spend too much time on this piece; I wanted to re-do it with this pushed gesture.
Also, after a while of using one of my go-to Krita watercolor brushes from last time (WaterC Flat Decay TIlt), I got really mentally exhausted. Played around with doing the painting stage in Adobe Fresco, but despite Fresco’s watercolor brushes feeling far more comfortable, I wanted to keep this artwork quick. Therefore, I just continued the painting in Krita.
Oh, and instead of erasing the extra pencil lines, I covered most of them up with white.
Plus, that monitor profile changing fixed my colors after all!😊 I’ve gotten my solution written down somewhere. I’ll try to post it sometime.
SELF CRITIQUE
(-) Iffy depth on the navy-blue block of color
(-) Mouth kinda looks like she’s smiling???
(+) Good foreshortening on Jenny & the chair
(+) Great gesture/line-of-action into the hurt leg; decently faithful to thumbnail’s gesture. Improvement from that in “A Place of a Contemplating Robot”
Shadow-less version
(-) L hand [our POV] gets lost in the sticking-out leg
Shadow-ed version
(-) Sticking-out leg disappears into the ground
(-) L arm should have harder edges on the shadow
 (+) L hand has hard-edged shadows
(-) Bent leg’s foot also has too soft of shadows

Hello there ~ Congrats on 100! 🎉💕 I'm so happy for you!! I was wondering if I could request a match up for Ikevamp. I'm fairly new to Tumblr and this is my first match up request so I'm a bit nervous since you are literally the first person I will have interacted with on here 😅 but I love your writing! If you are busy or have a lot of requests or anything please don't worry about it or overwork yourself! It's a lot of work and I totally understand!! Also edit, I'm really sorry in advance. This was way longer than I intended.
I am a bi female. I am an Aries but I am close to the cusp (April 18th). I don't typically associate myself with most Aries traits outwardly though since I am really shy and reserved, but internally I can see it as I am competitive with myself and a major perfectionist. But I'm low-key chaotic as can be like I'd identify myself as chaotic good since I'm just a mess with good intentions 😂 I am an INFP-T personality (which is scary accurate to me) if that helps any!
I am very short, only 5' tall and I am slim with overall small/petite features and frame. I have medium/dark, warmer toned brown eyes and auburn wavy/loose curly hair. I am very pale but have a lot of small freckles on my face and body. I've been told I look a lot younger than my age I think since I have a round face and am overall a small person. I'm very friendly and smile a ton but I am shy. I get big "eye smiles" whenever I smile and tend to blush a lot cause nerves. I've been told I tend to smile a lot and because I'm a shy, vv awkward person, my go to whenever I meet up with literally anyone is to smile out of nervous habit so people tend to think I'm overly friendly or approach me but in reality I'm a nervous boi.
I study landscape architecture and wildlife biology in college rn so I really love art and nature! I want to do habitat restoration after college. I especially am interested in plants and often go hiking and identify plants as well as do botanical drawings.
I am interested in both math and science as well as art. I enjoy watercolor painting as well and I am interested in illustrating children's books if landscape architecture doesn't pan out 😅
Besides that I have an obsession with extreme love for cats. I'm not ashamed to say my cat is my best friend, she is perfection 😂 I love anything living though thats not a person. Plant, animal, insect, they're all so wonderful to me and I tend to feel more comfortable around animals and nature than people.
My favorite color is a pale pink, I really love light, cutesy things. But my personal style is very retro academia. I wear a lot of clothes from the 60's and 70's or inspired by then. I really like fashion and fashion history.
My favorite food is spaghetti with just cheese. I may be an adult but oh well,, some plain ol spaghetti just hits the spot every time. I love baking and cooking though and have a sweet tooth. I used to decorate cakes in high school and I enjoy creating my own recipes and desserts.
I like to daydream, play video games, drink tea, sketch, read, and listen to music as well. I also spend a ton of time outdoors enjoying nature. I love trivial and fun facts. I want to gain as much knowledge as I can about the world.
I don't like things that are too loud I suppose. I'm a pretty easy going person but I am very nervous in crowds or places that are too loud. I'm also afraid of storms and I'm not fond of extremely dark places either. I don't like failing/faltering or embarrassing myself, especially in academics. I am extremely nervous talking to large groups or meeting new people as well, I prefer small, more personal interactions. While I enjoy talking to people it's just really hard so I don't usually unless they reach out to me first. I also hate conflict and drama (unless I'm not involved, then bring the popcorn). But any conflict is a big oof for me.
In a relationship, I really like surprise hugs and signs of affection. Sudden surprises create a sense of excitement which I really like to have. I like the idea of a relationship feeling new, passionate, and exciting, despite being together for awhile. I don't like gifts necessarily since I feel uncomfortable receiving things, I prefer sharing special memories. I'm not huge on PDA, I feel uncomfortable if someone is too clingy around others, especially my family or someone I know since my family is pretty conservative. But if we are alone, I love tons of affection and little acts of love. Hugs from behind, a small brush of our hands, holding pinkies, light kisses, and lots of smiles just make me melt, ugh tiny gestures are so cute. Communication is very important to me but not my strong suit, I tend to shy away from issues and trip over words I don't mean, but body language is very important and I think can be better for me and for my partner to understand.
I would like to be able to enjoy a comfortable silence with someone while we both read or do something while holding hands or just touching in some subtle way. I would love to be able to escape my perfectionist front that I have around others when I'm with my partner and be able to make really silly, dumb jokes and have lots of laughs. I love the idea of joking around while loosely holding each other. I present myself very seriously but I'm a big goof and rather dorky and like to have fun but romantic interactions.
Also it would be a plus if they love or at least tolerate kitty cuddles with me and my cat. My cat is such a baby, she's constantly in my lap or following me around so we are a package deal basically 😂
I'm sorry this is so long, and I hope it is enough for you as well!! Thank you so much for opening up match ups too! If you need anything else let me know! Take care of yourself and congrats!! 💕
It’s perfection don’t worry. Thank you so much for sending the request. I hope you are taking care of yourself too and everything is good.
Anyway I matched you with.....................
                                                            ............Isaac
Tumblr media
HA BET YOU DIDN’T SEE THAT ONE COMING!
oh you did?
ok I’ll stop
Isaac is a very curious person much like yourself
he loves discovering and learning new things
and that is the first thing Isaac noticed about you to be honest
sure he saw you and was like Damn she gorgeous but that was about it
however when he discovered that you are also a curious but little nervous bean he started opening up to  you
neither of  you like crowds and loud people who disrupt your concentration, so usually you spend your time in the library
sitting together in silence and reading
loves that your cute and blushy
even tho he’s exactly the same
as you got closer he started noticing more and more things about you
how your eyes would lit up when you passed certain plants in the garden
how you would hum to yourself and dance around thee kitchen a little when you thought nobody was looking
he loved everything about you from your adorably freckles to your reserved yet charming personality
it too him a long time to confess to you
a long time and a lot of pep talks from Leo
in the end he forgot everything Leo said and confessed to you in his own way
after that oh boy
you are the definition of inseparable
he’s new to this so you have to give him a little time to get used to it
after he’s comfortable he’s very affectionate
more in private but still
will give you surprised  hugs all the time
whether it’s that he walks up behind you and hugs you while turning apple red God if Isaac was here he’d kill me for that pun or him walking and scooping you up and plopping you in his lap in the library as you both get into some book
totally gets that you don’t like going to very crowded places
BOOM your wish is my command Isaac will almost always take you to fields of beautiful flowers so you can hang out, goof around, have a picnic and the stargaze
Isaac will pull you close or just hold your hand while explaining a few things about the constellation, after you will just enjoy the silence as you bask in each others company, while gazing up at the starry sky
he holds you pinky
finds it super cute and usually blushes harder than you even though he initiated it
holding your pinky is a personal thing for him
he finds it reassuring
you’ll just be walking and all of a sudden Isaac intertwines your pinkies
he’s anxiety on legs and holding your pinky is his way to tell you that in that moment he’s scared, anxious or just extremely nervous
you usually hug him and kiss his cheek
holding your pinky can also be that he loves you and hopes he’ll be with you forever
it depends on the situation, but he likes telling you he loves you like this
he has a surprisingly good sense of humour and likes to goof around with you
loves your cat
he wasn’t much on a cat person before, but your cat likes o play with Harry and he thinks that’s really cute
all in all you guys have a really good relationship
Ok now i have to pour some water on my head
CUTENESS OVER LOAD
Lia .exe has stopped working
That’s it! I hope you enjoyed and I hope you are well! Once again thank you @uwu-catlin for the request and the compliment. Love you 3000!

allow me to rant about the only thing that has been in my brain for the past two months and that is doll customizing babeyyyyy
i know there’s a 90% chance that you wont give a Shit about any of this but here we go anyways
SO first you gotta choose a doll. preferably one with a high range of motion to avoid creating new joints or having annoying limitations like not having elbow joints for some fucking reason. what the fuck mattel. give monster high dolls back their ball jointed shoulders and elbow joints. smh
the most common dolls ive seen used as bases are monster high and ever after high. most customs ive seen are highly stylized so the stylized face molds work well for those types of dolls but dolls like barbies are good for when you want a more realistic face-ups.
once you’ve got your base picked out you gotta wipe that bitch’s face off with like. acetone or nail polish remover or something strong like that. you can also use acetone to shrink doll heads which is cool as hell imo. n e way once the face is wiped you gotta chop off the hair and remove the hair plugs from the inside. ive seen this done several ways but the easiest and most common way ive seen is to dunk the head into boiling water for ~30 seconds until it gets squishy and malleable. once you’ve got the head back, you can use pliers (i think tweezers would work in a pinch) to pull out the hair plugs which are kinda icky because theyre covered in glue and other gross shit. ew
now you must decapitate the doll. dunk em back in the boiling water to soften them back up then just tug the head off. the neck pegs look funky and are usually a different color than the body so thats cool ig
once the head’s off, you can start the face-up which is basically just giving the doll a new face using stuff like watercolor pencils, acrylic paint, gouache, and a whole lot of other stuff. hell ive seen people use person makeup on these dolls.
next,,,,, hair. there’s about twenty million ways to do hair from gluing yarn wefts to sewing to rerooting with purchased nylon doll hair or yarn wefts but i’m gonna talk about the most common one ive seen which is rerooting and gluing.
before you can reroot, you need doll hair. which, as i mentioned, can be bought at stores like the doll planet or made at home with yarn in literally any color. have fun with it! make rainbow hair or something idk
to make homemade wefts, you take some acrylic yarn, cut it twice as long as you want the hair to be (keep in mind you can cut and style the hair once it’s been rerooted), fold them in half, and tie it to something sturdy like a wire coat hanger for the next step.
once you’ve got your yarn tied to your hanger, use a pet brush and brush the yarn until it’s wispy and looks like hair. then take a straightening iron and iron the weft flat. then remove from the hanger and boom. hair wefts. ta-da
to reroot the wefts onto the head, use a rerooting tool (which can be as simple as a needle with the eye cut at angle) (just google it please i’m shit at descriptions)) to poke small sections of the hair into the head. you can use the pre-existing rooting holes for your own reroot as they’re usually pretty reliable. to reroot, take a small length of you doll hair (about 10-15 strands), loop it in half, and put the middle of the loop into the reroot tool. poke the end of the tool with the hair on it into the pre-existing hole and remove the tool. the hair *should* stay in and fill up that plug!! also remember to plug thickly at the hairline and part of the hair where it's most noticeable. it doesnt matter as much in the center of the head as that’s not usually visible on the doll. once you’ve rerooted, squeeze in strong glue through the neck hole and squish around the head to make sure it covers all the plugs and secures them in place. then pour hot water onto the head to make the hair lay flat for styling later.
also, you can reroot yarn directly into the head to make thicker, more textured hairstyles. and since the yarn is thicker, you dont need to glue the inside of the head for the hair to stay in place!!
if youre not doing body modifications (which are also cool as hell) then it’s time for clothes but clothes are boring and i like body mods more so i’m gonna rant about them instead
the material ive seen most doll artists use is apoxie sculpt, which is like play doh on steroids. it comes in two parts which you gotta mix together for some reason. why dont they sell it pre-mixed. what was the reason. also once it’s dry it’s super super strong and you can sand it, drill into it, paint it, and all kinds of stuff. very nice and i want some for myself.
you can use hand saws and drills and shit to whack off doll limbs to make stuff like digitigrade legs or new joints. also dont be afraid to use other mismatching doll parts when customizing like heads and bodies and forearms and hands and shit. it literally does not matter if youre gonna recolor the doll anyways so have fun with it. make frankenstein’s doll if youre feeling spicy
accessories my beloved. stuff like tiny beads and clay baubles and shit will literally transform the entire doll plus they’re adorable and multi-purpose
i suppose i must talk about clothes now. ah well. you can find great clothing patterns if youre new to customizing on other customizer’s etsy shops and probably google although those will probably be lower quality than paid pattern pieces. and keep in mind that if it exists as clothing irl, you can likely make it doll-sized. there are literally no limits to your clothing options as long as you can execute your idea.
the once all your components have been made, you can assemble the doll again!! and finally see what all the parts look like together!! very cool 10/10 stars.
ight that wraps up my doll rant. i could really go into more detail on certain parts but thats a whole other rant for a whole other day smh. sorry for fucking flooding your inbox ender ahaha……………. you asked for this
little did you know that dolls have been one of my favorite things since like ever. if i can read a 25 chapter long fanfic i can read this B)
mattel definitely fucked up by completely ruining MH doll designs and just stopping EAH, alot of their profits most likely came from people who collect and customize dolls and by changing MH doll designs/Stopping EAH dolls they 1. most likely lost a small (or big if we're not jus talking people who customize dolls) part of their profit and 2. made it harder for doll customizers to make dolls/get commissions out rather quickly because they probably have to waste more time making joints or learning how to make joints.
EAH/MH dolls (specifically MH dolls) had AMAZING MODELS because there was so much variety with height, face shapes, etc (my favorite molds had to be the short/tall dolls and the cat molds because of the tails) and doll customizers really went all out with enhancing a molds unique features. The only "downside" abt MH dolls is that they (or atleast most)(from what i remember)) had slimmer faces but wider eyes while EAH dolls have wider faces with slimmer smaller which left a canvas for the face and not the eyes (and vice versa for MH dolls)
I've never seen any videos where a barbie is customized (maybe because i absolutely despised barbies at the time) so I'll definitely have to check those out but they seem to be good for realistic makeovers. I've seen like like semi realistic makeovers for EAH/MH dolls that were pretty good too tho (pretty sure mostly EAH dolls since yk MH dolls were used for creature makeovers while most EAH dolls weren't)
yeah i was always amazed by the head shrinking with acetone. honestly i still am?? idunno i have no idea how that chemical bullshit works. Ive seen a few of uh makeovers that just pain over the face (in multiple layers ofcourse) but that's usually when they're painting the entire body a different colour (again usually when they're turning a doll into a funky little baby man). I've also seen a few that just chop the hair off and take out the hair plugs yk without uuh like softening the head or just go straight for the hair plugs after taking off the head (i used to do that it was funny to me??). i always really liked when they used watercolour pencils or just colour pencils in general to draw/sketch on the face cause like wow ur drawing on ur doll without ruining it?? kinda epic maybe even poggers and pogchamp?? oh god my brain is failing wjshsmsj.
Watching them putting the hair back on the doll was, other than the face stuff, was the BEST part for me. Favorite type of hair was iuuuuuh was either thick yarn or brushed out yarn. Literally worship the people that would reroot the hair, theyre the most patience people on this earth!! it's literally insane but i guess that's what happens when you've been doing that for years? you guess kinda get used to it. when they put glue into the head does it just become stiff?? like it's just a clump of dried glue or does it like..hollow out again??
dude you literally cannot convince me most of the supplies used for doll makeovers. APOXIE CLAY LOOKS SO FECKING GOOD. its edible and i will die on that hill. The body mods are literally so amazing!!!!! it's so impressive how theyre able to imagine certain features THEN LIKE ACTUALLY MAKE IT LOOK ACCURATE TO WHAT THEY WANTED TO LOOK LIKE AFTER LIKE ON TRY (or many yk trial and error is very necessary for..everything). Absolutely loved when doll customizers would saw off a dolls legs and use different ones or just completely get rid of the torso to use a different one. it's like uuh that one big guy that's mismatched and sewn together. very cool. The accessories are so fun!! just small little details you seen really need but can add because it's your feckin doll!! I used to be absolutely obsessed over the doll clothes i would find on etsy, so much so that i started sewing shitty shirts and dresses for my uh "customized" dolls (they were absolute HORRORS idk WHY my mom let me feck up my dolls like that).
Thank you for this!! i haven't been able to talk about any of my interests for a while and this just really made me happy!!
Question fer u my fellow MH/EAH enthusiast: what was your favorite MH/EAH movie/episode and doll series. Mine was The fusion dolls (MH obvi) and that MH movie "Haunted" cause we got to know more about Spectra :D

Title: A Very Small Wish Fandom: The Cat Returns Characters: Baron, Muta, Toto, Haru, plus some OCs Rating: PGish maybe??  Words: 2797 Summary: A pleading request from a parent whose daughter has been cursed by a resentful witch is nothing truly out of the ordinary for the Cat Bureau— in fact, it might be so common so as to be routine— so why does something feel inherently off about this particular one?  Notes: Second chapter of six of a Secret Santa gift for @deedee-sunflowers. I had the realization that it actually takes a Bit for the witch part of this to show up, and I apologize for that orz That said, I'm so glad you liked it! Especially that they're all in character and that Vanya is interesting, aha. I worry a lot that he might be too grating, bc I definitely get a lot of enjoyment out of writing those kinds of characters, but I don't want them to also be irritating to sit through rip Anywho, a chapter in which Haru has a chat with a beloved monster i’m sorry that was a very vague shrek reference
                                      Ch. 2: Virtuous Siree
She might be hesitant to admit it, but Haru is almost disappointed to meet the cursed daughter, having halfway convinced herself in her unshakable unnerved skepticism that the Vanya creature had crafted her existence wholesale from lies and nothingness. Yet here she is, standing before them with her hands (hands? it’s hard to tell) folded in a mannerly fashion in front of her. Her long, golden veil is in much better shape than her father’s handkerchief, though the odd snag and rip is perhaps inevitable when one is in possession of what appears to be a pair of curly horns.
She is otherwise far from inconspicuous, as well; the gauzy shroud masking her person still reveals the aforementioned horns, and a pointed snout, and little hands adorned with inch-long claws. A long, hairless tail snakes out from behind her, curling at her feet like a sleeping dog.
Perhaps the most pressing thing, however, is that the same uneasy chill runs through Haru within this strange, half-concealed child’s presence as it does when her father is around. For the first time, she wonders if it’s not, in fact, her blunted human instincts furiously trying to warn her of Vanya’s true nature and simply a facet of his kind’s existence.
Vanya wanders into her line of sight again, standing beside his daughter with a laughably manic, skittish energy and reaching for her clawed hand. Haru notes the two are very nearly the same height. Yet, to hers (and probably the Bureau’s surprise, as well), he appears to have little trouble lifting her off the ground and holding her out to them, as if he’d worried they wouldn’t understand just how truly monstrous she’d become should he not bring her closer to their eyelines.
“This is my daughter, Virtuous Siree.” He seems to take a certain, special glee in saying so. “She is exquisitely cute! Like a baby. I’ve had her for years now.”
Virtuous Siree, though her face is obscured by the veil, seems unbothered by this treatment, inclining her head politely to their guests.
“Pleased to meet you.” Her voice echoes much like a lonely call in an empty stairwell, resulting in the definitively disorienting effect of two separate people speaking in unison.
“...And you, as well.” Baron is the first to recover from the oddness of the situation, removing his hat and bowing, and the rest of them follow suit shortly after (sans Muta, anyway, who gives a more characteristically terse greeting).
“Thank you, by the way,” Virtuous Siree then continues, as casually blithe as her father. “For taking the case. We are beyond aromatized to have obtained your assistance!”
Behind her, Vanya utters a noise somewhere between a squeal and a sob, and then hugs her close to him. “Cute! She’s too cute! Virtuous Siree, did you have a good day today?”
“Yes, Papa, I worked in the garden. The cherries are ripening on the vine! And I started a new painting when I was done.”
“Your funny prickly face horns are sticking me through my fur!” Yet, he appears to make no motions to pull away. (Haru sneaks an amused look at Muta; sure enough, the mystified frown on his own face makes it clear he’s as lost about how to feel about this interaction as she’d expected him to be.)
“How far of a journey is the Sown Forest from here, Vanya?”
The fox glances at Toto only from the very corners of his eyes at first, but the expression lacks even the most minuscule hint of suspicion. He pulls his face away from Virtuous Siree’s veiled one, placing her back on the ground with a happy coo.
“I can’t tell you how far, but it will take….” Here he counts futilely on his tiny paws again. “...eighteen-twenty minutes!”
“...You mean, eighteen to twenty minutes?”
Vanya hesitates, and here, now, it becomes obvious he’s beginning to pick up on Toto’s skepticism. When he answers this time, he’s back to his by now expected plaintive offense.
“Time works differently in Oostal! I’m only a little creature from Oostal, and I don’t know your Earthical time measurements!” He cries.
“Papa’s trying his best,” Virtuous Siree interjects with the modest passion one might expect from a shy girl her age, patting her father on the paw.
“To focus on the pretty Vanya Creature’s tenuous grasp of a time he’s never used before when his cute daughter is at risk of being cursed forever!”
“Yeah, birdbrain, that’s real heartless of ya,” Muta can’t help but add (a marked testament to how much he enjoys antagonizing the crow, if even his antipathy for the Vanya creature doesn’t see him pass up the opportunity.)
“But if time works differently, how are we meant to keep track of how long we have?” Toto asks, side-eyeing Muta with no small degree of smug amusement. (For his part, Muta seems uncertain whether to take this abrupt subject change as a surrender or a snub.)
“Use a pocket watch,” is Vanya’s dismissive reply.
Baron finds himself rather suddenly the object of vested interest for three pairs of eyes; Muta, Haru, and Toto all three almost instantly turn to him. He looks from each one to the other in moderate bemusement for mere seconds before his shoulders relax in a subtle show of resignation.
“Yes, I have one with me.”
“Wouldn’t have been you if you didn’t,” Toto teases with a smile.
“Of course,” Baron deigns to play along with a faintly put-upon tone.
“Where’s that witchy paper you said you got, anyway?” Muta asks Vanya. “The one that says it’s okay for you to get help from strangers. Don’t think I forgot about it,” he ends with crabbily.
“I left it on the table!” Vanya replies with a matching huff, less than humored by Muta’s skepticism.
Here Virtuous Siree jumps to contribute, expression molded into a contrite, abashed frown, “Oh, no— Papa, those papers got blown away earlier today! I-I opened the door to go out into the garden, and a bigly strong gust blew in!”
“Seriously—?”
“They blew up into the surrounding trees,” Virtuous Siree continues, more chastened than before in the face of Muta’s apparent exasperation, a reaction which seems to give the cat some considerable pause. “I couldn’t reach them.”
Vanya pats her head.
“It’s no significant loss that they did! We can search for them when I go to pick up the leg up in our sleeves.”
The perplexed silence which settles after Vanya’s words lingers heavily, but at least only briefly.
“Oh,” Toto first responds with a dawning amusement and the slightest of laughs. “You have something in mind to help make these tasks less of a struggle.”
Vanya nods enthusiastically, giving no indication of having discerned their earlier confusion, nor why Toto then felt the need to clarify. His tail, also, curls into an excitable question mark shape before relaxing again.
“It will take just a moment— I hid it in the root cellar with the other cates.”
“And the root cellar is—?”
“At the edge of the property, by the fence.”
“Very well. It shouldn’t take us long, I think, but we ought to depart right away. Please lead the way, Mr. Vanya.”
“I’ll stay here,” Haru speaks up. “I’d feel a little bad leaving Virtuous Siree all alone again, even if it is just a few minutes— I don’t mind keeping her company. I mean—” Here she turns to the girl herself with a sheepish expression, hands folded bashfully behind her back. “ —if she doesn’t mind my company, of course.”
“I don’t mind!” Virtuous Siree responds with a resolute shake of her head.
“Good, goods!” Vanya agrees in delight. There’s yet another almost cat-like expression of affection from him, rubbing his cheek against Siree’s as he swings their joined hands. “Play nice, Cute Siree. We’ll be back before you know it!”
                                                          &&&
The little house in which Vanya and Virtuous Siree have made their home is in all honesty not all that strange to Haru. At least, in the sense that it has walls and doors and windows, and furniture with purposes that are easy enough to grasp upon laying eyes on them. Yet two things still stand out to her as unusual.
The first is that the walls, if not the house entirely, give the rather distinct impression that the entire thing had been carved from an enormous gourd or another hardy vegetable of sorts. When Haru furtively lays a hand on one of the few unoccupied walls, she finds she can’t discern the material by sight or touch.
The outside of the house hadn’t struck her as so outlandish. It certainly hadn’t appeared to be a massive vegetable.
The second, as previously alluded to, is that almost every available surface is buried beneath an arbitrary variety of countless objects— threadbare coats, rusted silverware, broken trinkets.
Distantly, Haru recalls Vanya’s pithy words regarding his shattered teacup— waste not. Seems he kept that particular aphorism close to his heart.
Vanya’s daughter has claimed a spot at the round table in the middle of the room, perched precariously on a wobbly stool with a set of messy watercolor paints and a well-worn brush.
Her face is still hidden, but Haru can still tell her companion (Virtuous Siree, as her father has stubbornly referred to her, and it’s still a terribly odd name to Haru) is shyly stealing glances at her, one after the other, before quickly looking away again, back to her painting.
“Can I draw something, too?” Haru eventually asks to divert the tension.
Virtuous Siree jumps on the distraction. “Oh, yes! You can! Papa always keeps plenty of paper and paints around for me!”
The girl jumps off her stool and scurries to a cabinet across the room, behind a pile of ostensible scarves and socks (the cabinet itself also piled high with an unimaginably diverse array of items— hairbrushes, hats, and tattered books, just to name a few.) In a snap, Virtuous Siree has an identical spot to her own set up at the table beside her for Haru.
“Here you are! Would you like a flat or a round brush..?”
Haru, having never been much a painter, finds herself somewhat stumped at the question, glancing back and forth between the two brushes for a half-minute before sheepishly speaking up. “Actually, this is silly, but do you have anything more fit for an amateur? I don’t do much drawing, and I’d hate to waste some of your good materials.”
Virtuous Siree laughs, a short, girlish noise that quite comically clashes with her unnatural-sounding voice, and waves her hand. “Don’t be silly, I have plenty of materials. You can’t waste them if you used them to do something fun.”
“O-Oh… Well, I hadn’t thought of it like that.”
“If you want to start slow, though, hmm…” Virtuous Siree scampers across the room again, stooping to look in her cabinet; Haru hears her shuffle various objects around as she searches for something specific. “Oh! I have some wax crayons. They’re a little used, though.”
“Oh, that’s okay. They’ll be perfect.”
It’s when Haru is settled again, this time staring down at a sheaf of brown, grainy papers— thick, heavy, with a distinct weave to the tiny fibers that must make up the sheets— that she finds herself beset by another stumbling block. She hasn’t drawn anything since she was a child, and those childish scribbles had consisted mostly of attempts at whatever animals had caught her eye.
Absently, she wonders if her skills have managed to budge past their old level. Probably not. But, there’s no time like the present to find out, she supposes. She’ll try drawing Baron.
“What does the name Virtuous Siree mean?”
Virtuous Siree gives a pensive noise. “You don’t have to call me Virtuous Siree. Just Siree is fine. Only Papa calls me Virtuous Siree-- he added the first part a little while ago.”
“Okay, Siree, then. If you like, you can call me just Haru.”
“I’ll do that!” Then, remembering what Haru’s original question was, she adds diffidently, “‘Siree’ is just a filler word in Oostal’s language, but it has a-- umm, an implication of emphasis. It’s what you use to boost the feelings in what you’re trying to get across when you can’t remember a word.”
Haru pauses in her attempt to color in one of Baron’s eyes. “Does that mean your name with the addition of ‘Virtuous’ is kind of like saying ‘really virtuous?’”
“It is!” Siree admits with an almost embarrassed laugh. “Papa’s very silly sometimes.”
To herself, Haru thinks that sounds like yet another vast understatement.
“...Have you ever dealt with witch’s magic before?” Virtuous Siree asks.
“Not…. witch’s magic, no. At least, I don’t think so. But I was transformed into a cat once,” Haru says, carefully drawing a spiral on her paper with a yellow crayon (her interpretation of the sun. It won’t do to put crayon scribble Baron into a rainy, sad environment, after all).
“What’s a cat?” Siree asks.
“Oh— um. It’s an… an animal from my world. They look a little like your father, but a little bigger. Oh! Actually, Muta and Baron-- well, Muta is a cat, but Baron just looks like one.” Then, abruptly remembering Siree has been cursed and must therefore look quite similar to her father under normal circumstances, Haru hastily adds, “I-I guess they’d look like you, too, wouldn’t they?”
Siree nods slightly, even though she hasn’t looked away from her own painting. When she speaks, her voice is soft, shy again.
“They're cute. I wish I could be cute, too, like Papa. Or, um, like I was.”
Somewhere, that gentle, beseeching string of words tugs at an old fear, one that had been allayed rather completely with the return to her normal form but not altogether forgotten— that of losing her familiar reflection. What was on the inside ultimately wouldn’t have changed, and there had always been little flaws in her human appearance she could have spent hours complaining about, but… in the end, her face, her humanness, had been held more dear by her than she could ever have realized without being transformed against her will.
“Don’t worry,” Haru finds herself saying. “Baron and the Bureau managed to rescue me from becoming a cat. They’ll do the same for you, no problem. You just wait. You’ll be your old self in no time.”
Siree’s brushstrokes slow and then stop altogether. She moves so that Haru knows she must be studying her thoughtfully, and the very knowledge of Siree’s no doubt unblinking, pensive gaze trained intently on her is enough to give her goosebumps again.
“...You’re very kind,” the girl eventually remarks. Then, finally looking away (Haru’s pretty sure, at least), she adds, “I like that. I hope you make it out safe.”
“I have the Bureau,” Haru says surely. “I’ll be fine.”
“Well, I hope they stay safe, too,” Siree adds.
As if wise to the fact they’d been the subject of the past few moments of conversation, the Bureau (accompanied, of course, by Vanya) arrive just seconds after with the familiar sound of the beginnings of an altercation between Muta and Toto. Vanya again wastes little time in hugging Siree.
“You’re back,” Haru says in the meantime. “Are we good to go now, then?”
“Yeah,” Muta breaks off his disagreement with Toto to answer with a shrug. “Whatever the pipsqueak picked up, it didn’t take long.”
“It’s a surprise!” Vanya protests, turning a haughty gaze upon Muta. Then, thoughtfully, he amends, “...A good surprise.”
Haru, thinking of Vanya’s original haste in returning to his daughter, and seeing perhaps the same veiled concern in Baron’s and Toto’s faces, nudges the avian Creation beside her, and… well, bless him, Toto takes very little time to speak up for them all.
“Will Virtuous Siree be alright here all by herself?”
Vanya rocks back and forth a few times, dragging poor Siree with him (though she seems unbothered, at least). “Yes, yes, Virtuous Siree is safe here. There are neighbors! ...In fact, if she feels scared, she should go next door to Mr. Gleb.” This spoken directly to Siree, despite the odd choice in phrasing.
“I will, Papa,” Siree answers without hesitation.
It’s here that Vanya lets her go with one last delighted chirrup, bounding over to the door and the Bureau and darting outside. Before following suit (...somewhat), Haru turns back to the girl and flashes her a reassuring smile.
“Bye, Siree! Stay safe, and don’t worry— we’ll get you all fixed up.”
“I know you will!”
As far as Haru can tell, Siree continues waving until they can’t see each other, and something about the dedication instills a certain amount of similar sentiments in Haru.

Tumblr media
Who is that man talking to Namjoon by the desk? You’ve never seen him before, but as you look him up and down, you definitely like what you see. Dark, wavy hair with blond streaks flops over his finely-drawn eyebrows. The man’s eyes appealingly crinkle as he beamed at your art teacher, showing off a wide, heart-shaped grin.  He looks a bit short standing next to Namjoon--but who doesn’t, next to that tree of a man? More importantly, his loose hoodie and baggy yellow shorts reveal swathes of honey skin and lean muscle. He has the look of a dancer, slender but powerful. Your eyes catch on his exposed thighs (those shorts were really rather short, weren’t they?). Damn, those are truly something to behold. You’d never considered yourself a leg woman before, but those yellow shorts are changing your outlook.
As you drag your appreciative gaze back up his body and face (was that a freckle on his top lip?), you realize Yellow Shorts is looking right back at you. You get lost in his dark brown eyes for a moment until it dawns on you that you’ve just been busted checking this gorgeous man out. His smile grows impossibly wider as your cheeks grow hot. Damn your easy blushes.
You quickly break eye contact, busying yourself with digging through your leather satchel, pretending to look for your pencils. Your hands are actually trembling a bit, and you can feel your heart pounding. How can a 5-second eye lock have such an effect on you? Yellow Shorts is still talking to Namjoon, but every time you accidentally look in their direction (who are you kidding? Your stare is drawn to him like you're magnetized), you can feel the weight of his gaze on you.
Suddenly, Namjoon breaks the tension by clapping his hands together, drawing the attention of everyone sitting at their easels. You turn your attention towards your teacher, but out of the corner of your eyes, you notice Yellow Shorts slipping away towards the screen in the corner of the studio. Is he the model for tonight? You could only be so lucky.
“Hey guys, welcome to week three! Glad you could all make it out on this rainy evening.” Namjoon addresses the class, a dimple appearing in his right cheek as he smiles. “By now, you’re all pretty familiar with the drill, right? We’ll start off with 5 minutes of quick warm-up sketches, and then move into some 10-minute poses. 15 minute coffee break at the hour mark, and then we’ll do a 45-minute pose. Sound good?” He nudges his black-rimmed glasses up his nose as your classmates murmur their agreement.
As you pull your sketchbook out of your bag, you think back to how you’d ended up in this studio in the first place.
---
You’d just ended an 18-month long relationship a few months prior. It was a reasonably amicable breakup--no cheating or dramatics. You had just… fallen out of love. In fact, you weren’t sure if you were ever actually in love. Your relationship had quickly fizzled out of the honeymoon stage, so towards the end, you were in a rut of watching bad tv together on the couch nightly, your ex playing Overwatch on his laptop while you browsed Twitter on your phone. Your sex life wasn’t any more interesting--you hadn’t even “Overwatch and chilled” in quite a while. One night, you looked over at him and realized you had no desire to do this for the next 40 years, and told him it was over. He shrugged, barely looking up from his game.
However, no matter how boring it had been towards the end, it had been comfortable companionship, so your apartment now seemed empty at night. Even the stereotypical post-breakup gym routine couldn’t fill the hours, although you had never looked better. You thought about getting back into the dating game, but the selection of men on the apps was, to put it lightly, terrible.
One night, you were out at a bar with your best friend getting wine-drunk and complaining about your boredom. Ashley took a long sip of her drink before looking at you over her glass. “You know what you need? You need a hobby. And no, Twitter and Tinder don’t count.”
“Twitter is a perfectly valid hobby. I’m keeping up on the latest political news and memes! Plus did you see the latest posts from Mark Ruffalo? That guy is a genius.” You drained the last of your glass and looked around for the server. You needed another drink.
Ashley scoffed. “You’re not even keeping up with politics. You’re getting into flamewars with people over the latest episode of the Bachelorette.” Damn. Your best friend knew you too well. She turned her head and effortlessly flagged the server over while checking her watch. Twenty minutes left for happy hour specials. “Hi, can we get two more glasses of the rosé please?”
You resisted the urge to check your Twitter account and incur more of Ashley’s scorn. “What do you suggest, then?”
“My coworker, you know the one that had the breakdown after she walked in on her husband fucking the babysitter?” Ashley paused as the server dropped off the fresh drinks.  You nodded--that was a juicy story you wouldn’t be forgetting anytime soon. “Anyway, she started taking art classes at the rec center. She does everything from pottery to watercolors. Apparently, her psychologist recommended it, but she loves it. She never stops talking about how healing it’s been.”
You wrinkled your nose. “The rec center? I thought those classes were for kids and senior citizens.”
“She did mention there are a lot of old people in her classes. But get this--the drawing teacher was this really hot Korean guy. With dimples.” Ashley gave you a meaningful look. She really did know you too well.
“Ehh… art class? I don’t know if that’s really my thing. I haven’t touched a sketchbook in years.” You had actually been a decent artist in high school, but had dropped it in college as you got wrapped up in your classes and parties. You honestly couldn’t remember the last time you’d done anything artistic, outside of mandatory bridesmaid crafting duties for bridal showers and bachelorette parties.
“Hot. Korean. Guy. With. Dimples.” Wine splashed out of Ashley’s glass as she jabbed your finger at you for emphasis. “Plus, getting some culture could be healing for you. It worked for Jessica. You really need to get out of the apartment more.”
You gently grabbed Ashley’s glass, rescuing the wine from her flailing and promptly. pouring it down your throat. “I’ll think about it.” You weren’t going to think about it. There was no way you were going to take an art class with a bunch of senior citizens, even with the lure of a hot instructor.
Two drinks later for each of you, Ashley was squinting at your credit card, trying to type the numbers into the rec center’s shitty website on her phone. “Boom, you’re signed up. Class starts Monday so you’d better get your supplies this weekend.”
In your rosé-induced haze, what you hadn’t realized is that Ashley had signed you up for a figure drawing class. You were in for a double shock when you walked into the rec center 10 minutes late that first Monday night. The first shock, that the teacher, Namjoon, really was that hot (with fantastic dimples)--and the second shock, that there was a nude middle-aged man posing on a couch on a small stage.
Much to your surprise (and Ashley’s smugness), the figure drawing class really was enjoyable. Namjoon was a great teacher--patient and encouraging--and you’d forgotten how good it felt to create something rather than just passively consuming media. You’d even gotten used to the nudity as you focused on capturing the model in efficient pencil strokes in your sketchbook. Your first few figure sketches were horribly amateur, but you soon got caught up in the art, and the first two classes had flown by. The second week’s model had been a young college-aged woman with the most amazing tiger tattoo covering her back, which had been a lot of fun to draw. You had been looking forward to what week three would bring, but you had no idea what was really in store for you.
---
As you finish setting out your pencils and erasers, you notice motion from the corner of the room again. The hot guy from earlier emerges from behind the screen… and he's no longer wearing the shorts, but is wrapped in a knee-length gray robe. Oh holy shit, he really is the model for the night. One of your pencils goes flying out of your suddenly-clammy grip and clatters across the floor, rolling to a stop in front of Yellow Shorts. Your face bursts into flames again.
His face scrunches up into a warm smile. “Oops! You might need this.” He bends over (don’t look at his ass, don’t look at his ass), scoops the pencil up, and saunters over to your desk.  The pencil appears in your line of vision where you're staring fixedly down at your sketchbook. Slowly, you look up and meet his twinkling eyes. His smile doesn’t dim as you stare blankly up at him and the little dimples in his cheeks, but he waves the pencil in front of you again. Your attention caught by his hands, you suddenly notice how long and elegant his fingers are. He wears a silver ring on his middle finger, and a delicate chain on his wrist.
As if in a dream, you finally take the pencil from him. Your hand brushes his. His fingers are warm and dry, but you feel your breath catch at the light touch. He drags a fingertip across your palm as he lets go of the pencil. Your eyes snap up to his, which look decidedly darker. But his light tone of voice doesn’t match his eyes as he simply says, “Here you go! Please use it to draw me well!” He turns away to join Namjoon in front of the stage.
Namjoon chuckles quietly. “Everyone, this is Hoseok, our model for tonight. Some of you might know him already. He’s the dance teacher here at the rec center, but moonlights as an art model in his free time.” A dancer, of course. That explains the muscle. Your blush still hasn’t gone down and your palm is still tingling as you try not to stare at his toned legs. Namjoon turns to Hoseok and claps him on the shoulder. “We’ll start with the 5-minute warmup first, so just change your pose every time you hear the timer beep.”
Yellow Shorts--Hoseok--nods cheerfully. “Aye aye, boss!” He steps up on the stage and unceremoniously shrugs out of his robe, laying it to one side and sitting down on the chaise lounge. All of the blood that had previously been in your cheeks is now rushing down to lower parts as you’re treated to an uninterrupted view of his sinuous body. He’s perfect. His collarbones catch the light as he turns his face to the side, revealing a sharp profile. His biceps flex lightly as he lowers himself down on one elbow, accentuating the line from his elegant shoulders to his narrow waist. A very defined v-line draws your eyes from his lean abs to his relaxed cock resting on one of his gorgeous thighs. You subtly squeeze your legs together under your desk at the sight. Shit, even his dick is perfect. You genuinely think your heart might stop--but what a way to go.
Suddenly, your lustful reverie is broken by the sound of the timer going off, indicating that a minute in the quick sketch period had gone by and it’s time for Hoseok to switch poses.  You haven’t drawn a single line in your sketchbook yet. You’re fucked.

Ivan Ehlers.
Bio: I’m a cartoonist out of the Los Angeles area. I’ve contributed work for MAD Magazine, The New Yorker, The Nation, Alta Magazine, American Bystander and The Weekly Humorist. And probably some other places that will feel slightly slighted for not having been mentioned.

An excerpt from Ivan’s favorite Shouts piece which you can read here!
Tools of choice: I used to work with regular old pencils, computer paper, and pens you can steal from a restaurant. Now that I am a highly paid professional, I’ve upgraded to some tools that I really like a lot. Here, let me show you:
Tumblr media
Paper: Strathmore Mixed Media 400 Series. This is necessary, because I use a lot of ink and do watercolor washes. If you use lower grade paper, it will get ugly: the ink will run, the paper will warp, and you will be unhappy. Plus, certain nibs will really tear apart lesser papers. Unless that is part of your aesthetic, I would advise you pay the extra 17 cents for better paper.
Ink: Ziller Ink - Soot Black. It’s the best ink out there, and believe me, I’ve tried at least 2 other brands. It dries fast, has a consistent consistency, and is waterproof. What else could you ask for? (Note: You can’t ask for the ink to make you better at drawing.)
Tumblr media
Nibs: I use an old fashioned dipping pen with a couple of different nibs. I enjoy a Gillott 1950 nib, because you can go all over the place with it, and mostly because Mort Drucker uses it. You can get wild with it and keep on going. Recently I’ve been sticking with a Gillott 303 nib because the line is a little thicker, and it feels a little sturdier. I’m fairly rough with my tools, and draw like an ape. It's never advisable to have a nib tip break off and fly in your eye. Unless you're into that sort of thing, and I'm certainly not here to tell you how to live your life, one-eye.
Eraser: My lovely young lady, who is a fine artist, swears by the creepy gum eraser, but I find it too disturbing. I opt for the regular Pentel Hi-Polymer eraser. It’s pretty smooth, doesn’t eat up the paper and doesn’t make you feel like you’re playing with a rubber turd while you’re erasing. Plus, no one has ever tried to eat a Hi-Polymer eraser mistaking it for candy.
Tumblr media
Stamps: It’s good to have stamps to save you time when you need to write your name or the word “RUSH.” If you had time to write out the word “RUSH,” you wouldn’t really be in a rush, now then would you? And then people wouldn't be wrong to call you a liar. And in this industry, you don't want that reputation following you around. Just get the damn stamp.
Tumblr media
Watercolor: I use watercolor as an ink wash. Probably because I don’t know any better, but maybe because it looks rad. I go for Grumbacher Academy paint in those tiny tubes. It’ll last you some time.
Water Brush: A lot of people use a regular brush for washes, but I have been shown the light that is a Koi Water Brush and it is just too smooth. It's really easy to use and in my eyes gets the best of a brush and a pen in terms of handling and output.
Tumblr media
Pen Cleaner: Speedball Pen Cleaner. It feels a bit foolish to bother with things like this, but running your nibs under water can lead to bad things that a scientist would have to explain to you. Some type of build-up that is undesirable. Cleaning your tool properly is not only for the un-circumcised. Make that your mantra.
Digital: I use a Wacom tablet and Photoshop. I was a dyed-in-the-wool Luddite for ages, and only learned technology a couple years ago. I basically use it like I’m drawing on paper and am ill prepared to give you more information on the subject. It’s smooth to know computer stuff, but I’d advise learning to draw the old school way of drawing first. One can become over-reliant on programs and develop a lot of bad habits otherwise. But, maybe that’s just something we say at my senior citizen's meet ups.
Tool I wish I could use better: My brain. It’d be nicer to be funnier. Or more elegant.
Tricks: Keep your sketches loose before inking. If you over-render a sketch, it becomes increasingly hard to do it justice when inking. And then you feel a fool when you are coerced into telling your friends and employers, “It looked way better as a pencil sketch!” Then you’ll really hate yourself. Save that bit of discomfort and find the drawing at the inking stage.
It’s also recommended to have someone with a good eye and a great heart that you trust to have a look at your work before you share it with the world. It’s quite an easy thing to delve in too deep in your work, and miss the forest for the trees.
Tumblr media
Ariel and Gloria
Misc: Draw all the time and don’t be a jerk. There’s so much information on the InterWeb that you can learn a lot and develop greatly if you put your mind to it. Pick what you want to do and really go for it. Study art from before you were born.
Never give up. Until it becomes clear that you should have given up several years ago. At that point, pretend that you stopped doing it because it’s lame and everyone sold out and the scene got too commercial. Insist it was your moral compass that guided you to quit and nothing else. Never admit anything else until the next time you get really drunk and talk to a stranger at a bar. Wash, rinse and repeat.

Author’s Note: this is short but I saw this on Instagram and it was too cute and I literally started and did the majority of this story in one day and ahh wefweif I love it so I hope you enjoy it! This is basically a heart healing story for those who read You Promised!Changkyun since that story was very angsty!
Tumblr media
You walked hand in hand with your love, Changkyun approaching the somewhat crowded mall, both wearing couples' matching jeans and white shirt. Today was the first day in a few weeks where Changkyun was able to have a free day with no practices or recordings or anything idol related. Today he was your Changkyun than the group’s maknae, I.M. The sky was clear with some white fluffy clouds here and there, the sun reflected off some of the glass that majority of the mall was constructed of. The automatic sliding doors opened as the two of you approached it, triggering its sensor. A cool breeze of air blew into your faces from the air conditioning running throughout the mall. Soft music played over the speakers, filling your ears’ along with the hum of chatter from everyone as they walked to and fro from stores.
“Are there any stores you want to in particular first?” Changkyun looked at you as the two of you walked slowly, approaching the lineup of stores as they were side by side. The light from the windows on the ceiling of the mall reflected off of him, making it seem as if he was an angel. The light made his light brown hair seem even lighter, accentuating his somewhat pale and melanin skin.
“Mmm, I don’t think so... I remembered I wanted to buy some art stuff but I’m not in a rush so we can just get it when we walk past the store.” You wanted to buy some watercolor paper and the actual watercolor paint and brushes needed. You drew a wolf poster for Changkyun for his birthday coming up but he didn’t know that. You were an art student at university so he assumed this was just as a small side project or assignment of school, thinking nothing too big of it. “What time is it?” You realized the two of you woke up rather late and left later. The mall seemed empty even though it was the weekend.
“It’s.” The two of you paused in your tracks as he pulled out his phone from his pocket. “Shoot, my phone’s dead,” he sighed. “I forgot to charge it after last night..” He recalled to yesterday evening, you spent the night with the boys at the dorm. The eight of you had put on your onesies, yours being a fox. How you were able to convince the boys to do it through they had a long practice earlier that day, you didn’t know yourself. Hyunwoo had called and ordered shaved ice to be delivered to their dorms, beginning the most fun night they had aside from their concerts. Music was blasting through their dorms along with small disco-strobe lights. All of you had danced around the dorm in animal onesies, eating shaved ice; life was good, simple, there were no pressures of perfect idols looming over them or the pressure of being successful after university crushing you.
“Do you wanna go back to the dorms so you can charge your phone?” You looked up into his dark brown eyes. You were down with anything so you didn’t mind greatly if you guys had to leave at this moment. You would have to go out on your own to get your materials.
“No, it’s okay. We just got here. We’ll just have to stick even closer,” he teased, wrapping his arm around your shoulder, squeezing you closer to him. “Let’s wander!” You two walked down and through the line of stores, trying on clothes and making each other laugh by finding the most ridiculous articles of clothing, making the other wear it. It was almost like a competition to see who could make the other look the worst. There were no limits; you even made Changkyun put on a bra and dress with high heels. He got his revenge, however, picking out the most cringey motif-quoted shirts and the most ridiculous shorts or skirt, or whatever it was. The two of you did buy clothes from the actual stores though so it didn’t seem you two were shoplifting or anything (this is an actual thing I feel when I go into a store and don’t buy anything asdlkdaslj) Changkyun and you had bought some clothes from hoodies and shirts from M&H, some summer clothes from Forever 22, and more. Time had gone by, slowly beginning to get late, getting closer to closing time. Since it was the weekend, the mall closed earlier than weekdays. The two of you had walked through all three levels of the mall, even stopping in the food court for milkshakes.
“Oo, the art store!” Changkyun adored seeing your eyes literally light up when you saw something or you were doing something you were enjoying. He smiled feeling your hand squeezing against his as you began pulling him towards the large art store. It was like heaven for you; you could spend hours wandering through every aisle, finding something that intrigued you. Changkyun once even had to take you away since you almost blew all your money on the things you wanted. He told the members many funny and interesting adventures of following you through the art store; how you spent almost an entire hour in one single-aisle; the drawing supplies. The long aisle was filled with sketchbooks of numerous variations, watercolor, sketching, coloring, as well as materials needed from color pencils to sketching pencils and special kneading erasers (which aren’t the best tbh but that’s just me).
“Wait, I’m going to use the bathroom.” Changkyun walked toward the bathroom to the left of the entrance of the store. “I’ll be right back.” He walked off towards the bathroom, leaving you there. You stood outside, sipping on the last bit of your milkshake, looking around, anticipating when he would come back until there you saw it. You walked directly towards your favorite aisle; the art and sketch aisle. You had coupons on your phone since you were a member, but there was an all store discount, making this the best day, and the best haul you will ever have. You grabbed an empty basket and began putting things into your basket, wandering deeper and deeper into the store, completely forgetting about Changkyun’s absence. Your basket slowly became fuller and fuller as you walked, roaming with your eyes wide, scanning at anything and everything that caught your eye. You made a mental note to come back next time in the future to get this brand of something than that, remembering to find a coupon for another thing so you could try a new project in the future. You now stood at the farthest corner of the large store, looking at yarns, contemplating making one since the old ones you made were fraying. Plus, you hadn’t knitted in a while so it’d be fun. Your happiness and focus on the yarns you were contemplating buying was interrupted by an announcement over the PA system.
Changkyun emerged from the bathroom after a minute or two with his hands in hand. He looked around to where he saw you last, to a somewhat surprise, seeing you gone. He sighed, resting his hands on his hips. “What am I going to do with them?” He chuckled to himself as he began walking past aisles, scanning down them for your presence. He began to see why you liked the art store so much considering if he were you, he would spend hours here as well. Peculiar trinkets and art supplies caught his eye, some being so weirdly shaped, he questioned their purpose. He began to walk down the row of aisles a bit faster until he realized he was at the end. “How did they move so fast? Where did they go?” He was now slightly concerned. Knowing you, your mind would be completely blank in here, except for your list of buying things.
After walking past the tall aisles filled with art supplies, he walked towards the front of the registers. “There’s only one thing left I can do..” He sighed, knowing he was going to be slightly embarrassed. As he approached a closed register, a large metal bin of large stuffed animals caught his eye. “Oo, I’ll take you,” his voice was playful as he picked out his champion out of the various animals. He made his way to the register to ask his request and pay, making the lady open her lane.
“Would Y/N Y/L/N, please report to register 10 to pick up your child.” A lady over the speakers called you, confusing you. You couldn’t choose just one and chose both yarns, tossing them into your now mostly full basket.
“Child?” Confusion washed over you as you began walking towards the entrance of the store where the registers were. You walked past more things, slowing down to stop and look again, but you had to restrict yourself. “Next time..” It pained you to turn away from something that just looked so interesting to you. You wanted to have it yourself to try to make something out of it, though what you had in your basket was enough, more than enough.
Changkyun watched in amusement, but content as you began to walk towards him with confusion plastered on your face, but you, of course, didn’t see him due to his friend. He bit his lip, trying not to confront you, not yet. “Keep it together...” he told himself.
You arrived towards register 10, almost all the other register lanes completely empty since it was near closing time. You approached the lady at the register with your basket and began putting your items on the conveyor belt. “My child?” You tilted your head to the side, watching her as she continued scanning. The taller and older employee glanced toward the bench against the wall.
“Your baby!” Changkyun sat on the bench, pouting as he pressed his face into a large white seal stuffed animal. “OHHHHHH That CHILD!” You yelled in your head. Your mouth created an ‘O’ shape as you approached Changkyun. “Kyun, I’m so sorry, oh my gosh. I’m so sorry!” You repeatedly pressed kisses on his face as you stood between his separated legs as he continued to hold the large stuffed animal.
He pouted, the corners of his lips pointed downwards as his lower lip was pushed out. He seemed not too pleased despite your apologies, but deep down you knew he wasn’t truly mad at you. “I bought myself a friend since you abandoned me..” He shook his head as he glanced from you to his new friend.
You smiled as you looked down at him. You held his face in your hands, pushing his cheeks together and making him look chubby with cuteness. “I’m sorry Changkyun. Will you please forgive me?” You knelt down, looking into his eyes. You folded your hands together, giving your own puppy eyes towards him which was his kryptonite.
He felt his heart beating faster and melting all at once, staring into your eyes. He drew his lips into a straight line, looking back to his new soft friend. “Do you think we can forgive them?” He then brought the stuffed animal to his ear as if it was really talking to him. “We’ll forgive you, but we demand more kisses.”
“Of course, I’m sorry.” You stood up, holding his face once again before you pressed your lips against his.
He could feel you smiling against his lips, making him smile until he remembered where you two were. He broke the kiss, his cheeks slightly red. “Go pay, let’s go back to the dorm..” He quirked, raising an eyebrow and winking at you.
You watched him as you now stood at the register, heat rising to your face by the second. You bit your lower lip, containing your laughter. You paid, leaving hand in hand with him, beginning to go home for what you assumed an adventure Changkyun had in mind.

Watercolor Kitty
Look, paint!   So not that long ago I more or less made the decision with myself that I wanted to branch out into watercolor. I've been avoiding the world of painting for a while because...I mean, have you guys seen that gigantic rabbit hole of supplies to pick through, for one thing?? Beyond that, just overall my past experience and knowledge of paint up until this point hasn't been that inspiring. (I'm going to describe past experience now, but in small text so if you're not interested you can just skip it.) For starters, it wasn't until like halfway through high school that I finally understood there were even different kinds of paint that behave differently, and I did not learn that from art class, either. I'm not sure when and where exactly, but I found out on my own and was like, why were we never taught this. A thought I still have regularly, I might add. You'd think that would be a pretty high-ticket item in art classes past Elementary school. All of my watercolor experience until recently was contained within my elementary and middle school years. The colors were always super washed out and even though at one point we went over techniques, we didn't actually get to use them more than like twice. And then high school art never addressed watercolors again. Other than that, I had heard the term "oil paint" thrown around, but I didn't really understand what it was. The closest thing I knew of was oil pastels, but that didn't help because they were like older cousins of crayons and not very paint-like at all. I have done a few things with acrylic in the past, but mostly solid backgrounds (or not very interesting school projects that never explained they were acrylic paints in the first place; it's paint just use it as instructed) in which I spent entirely too long trying to mix just the right color and enough of it, and then you have to bend over backward to keep the stuff from drying out. No thank you. Then last year I started my adventure in trying to recreate this thing called the Rainbow Sponge (and have done so to moderate success, but that's a conversation for another day) and in that process acquired some inks by Dr. Ph. Martin. When testing colors to make sure I was grabbing what I wanted, they reminded me of watercolors, and the general impression I got during that time (from experimenting and from researching) was that they pretty much were watercolors, the exception being that once they dried you couldn't re-activate them. (And they were purely liquid; most watercolors are either the little panned cakes or the more traditional "paint consistency" you find in tubes and apparently the liquid watercolors you find are usually dye-based instead of pigment based, so they behave slightly differently on paper.) After seeing a couple of Youtubers I trust try them, I decided to spoil myself with some commission money and ended up with this set of strange watercolor sheets, and even though I didn't know much about watercolor, I really liked them and the idea of a water brush instead of a traditional paintbrush and 50,000 trips to change paint water. Plus, by this time I had learned that watercolor doesn't have to be all totally washed-out pastels. Who knew, right? Somewhere in this mess, I was attuned to the idea of first the Derwent Inktense, ink-based pencils and watercolor pencils, which both came as side-effects of my deep-dive into the world of colored pencils. They both sounded intriguing--Pencils you can blend out with water to get rid of the streaks?? What??--and after I checked the Faber Castell Polychromos off my Art Supply Wishlist, watercolor pencils went next. The set of Arteza ones that I got, I like pretty well. After that, since I had at least two watercolor supplies I rather liked using enough though I didn't really know what I was doing, I figured I might start looking into gaining some knowledge on what to do with them. A couple of weeks ago I acquired a book called "Watercolor Workshop" by Sasha Prood because it instantly caught my attention for telling you on one page what to do with an example, and them providing you with a space to give a try for yourself, which is not something that is all that common to me in "how to X" books. This book made me want to procure a set of tube watercolors, and after some poking around on Amazon with a specific budget and requirements in mind, I ended up with a 24 set by Crafts 4 All and an empty travel palette by Meedan to put them in. (As I've come to understand it, this seemed like the best route to go for tube colors; I know myself too well to trust just squirting the paint onto a regular palette every time and not wasting it, especially when it comes to mixing colors, so I went the route of putting some paint in little half-pans and letting them dry to hopefully prevent that.) I won't go too much into detail like a review of that set of watercolors or my tube-to-pan process here, because I want to play with the paints some more to get a better feel for them before I truly sing their praises or condemn them, but so far they're actually working out a lot better than I thought they would, considering they were pretty inexpensive. So far my biggest complaints are A. I'm not crazy about the smell, as it's a pretty "industrial" scent, but I get the feeling a "paint smell" is relatively unavoidable; and B. I wish there were more colors. The range in the 24 set feels pretty balanced out (though one more purple wouldn't have hurt), I just wish there were more in total. (And for all I know they sell a bigger set, I haven't looked into it, but this isn't really a bad thing; I like what I've seen so I want more.) As is maybe obvious, I meant for this to go up closer to Valentine's Day, but my palette didn't come in until the day after, I had to wait at least a day after that for the paints to dry out, and I can only paint so fast. (I had the sketch done on like the 12th, I think, and the line art on watercolor paper on the 13th). And by then I had a couple of other pieces backlogged, so since I had missed my holiday window, I figured I'd just post it at the next available opportunity. (And after I got off my lazy bum to write this description ) I was inspired by some very red-furred kitties on Pinterest for colors and I've been trying to get a bit into hand-lettering, though I didn't get too fancy with that here because I mostly just wanted to play with the paint and see what I could do (and I was also putting a new set of Sakura Gelly Rolls to the test on just how waterproof they were--fortunately they passed!). It's going to be tricky to break my habit of how I like to usually blend and shade with my other supplies, as watercolors just don't behave the way markers and pencils do, but as I said earlier, these were working to my liking much better than I had expected. My little fluffy kitty here isn't perfect, but I do think she turned out quite cute. I was trying to avoid using my other supplies to really let the watercolors breathe and do their thing, but I did have to add a gold border with a Pentel Sparkle Pop because it just needed something. The only real issue with this piece I ended up having is that the physical copy has a nice stain where at some point I wasn't careful with waving my brush around and got a little blop of yellow ochre paint near the bottom right corner. I lifted off what I could, but apparently, I had not noticed it for long enough it did get to settle in a little. Fortunately, I was able to crop it out on the scan, though! I do have one other art piece ready to go for Wednesday, but beyond that, I am hoping to do more with these watercolors and I should have some new supplies coming in the mail this week with a couple of planned test-pieces in mind. (Does anyone else just get this relieved sort of exhilaration from getting new supplies? No? Just me? ) (Also I'm mostly trying to get into a consistent upload pattern, even though I keep missing a couple days here and there ) ____ Artwork © me, MysticSparkleWings ____ Where to find me & my artwork: My Website | Commission Info + Prices | Ko-Fi | dA Print Shop | RedBubble |   Twitter | Tumblr | Instagram

W O W, I am in total AWE. Your artwork is so fucking stunning. I love how in your pencil sketches you only shade the important parts of the face, as im someone who likes to do the E N T I R E thing, i really love your art style it's so mesmerising. How long have you been drawing? how old are you? What's your favourite medium?? I have so many questions !!
I’m finally coming around to answering my asks (which are never fail to brighten my day), I’m really sorry for the wait. Life is so hectic and I’m not good with words. I will respond to all of my asks in the near future, please be patient with me. Also my English isn’t the best.
Warning long post ahead.
Thank youfor your kind words! That’s really sweet of you to say. I’m happy that you likemy art!
And it seems you are right that I tend to sketch only the prominent futures of a person/face.It’s just something I do without really thinking about it. I looked into yourblog and I really like your style. That’s the beautiful thing about art, thereare so many styles, so many ways to go about it and no style is better thananother.
To yourquestions:I am in my twenties. I’ve been practically born with a pencil in hand. Even asa little kid I was constantly doodling. My two best friends during elementary andhigh school were extremely talented, so I think that played a role in it too. Ithink there wasn’t a day I wasn’t drawing something. I’m self-taught and tendto stray from the “traditional” techniques and instead mix media and techniquesto get the result that I want. I’ve got my first watercolor set when I was 12or something, I bought myself a few anatomy books, copied a lot and justpracticed.
After Ifinished school I was like ok I now need to study for a job with good futureprospects (plus I never was really confident about my abilities, like there areso many talented artists out there why should I have a chance in this field),so I put all my art supply away and went to university, got my Bachelor ineconomics and business law and just felt empty. Of course, I still keptdoodling in my notes, because you can’t suppress your true self like that, butI did not work on real drawings or paintings during this time. After working abit in this field, I said to myself that’s not what you want to do for the restof your life (even so I really enjoyed the analytical part of it), so I wentand did my Master’s degree in information design and media management. And nowI’m able to combine my two degrees in my current job.
Aftergetting my degree this year I was like, ok I really want to get back intodrawing people. From here on onwards I want to do what makes me happy, what Ilove. And I made the decision to put myself out there. And I am still amazedthat there are people who seem to genuinely like my stuff. I think you canreally see looking at the pieces that I posted, that I did took a break fromdrawing (people) and that I had to re-accustom myself to doing it again. And I’mstill trying to really figuring out digital drawing. It’s fun, but I feel sinceI’m relatively new to it, that I don’t do with it all I could. (I bought myselfa Wacom bamboo tablet years and years ago, tried digital for a while, but neverreally got into it… until now).
My favoritemedium… that’s a hard one…. I would say either Watercolor or ink, as long as Ihave a brush in hand and can manipulate the color-intensity I’m at my best (Ifeel).
Sorry for the way to long answer. If you’re still reading, congratulations you are a strong one. I hope you have a wonderful day 💜

Positivity list
@veronicabunch started doing these positivity lists, and I figured I’d jump on the bandwagon. 💖
-I got 5 rewards certificates from work (mostly due to impulse buying and just poor money management/budgeting on my end. oops. at least there’s a positive part to me spending most of my paychecks from last month on oil paints and brushes instead important things like bills), but this means I have a free $50 that I can spend on art supplies before I have to use my own money. I plan on getting some of the nice but expensive watercolors once they go on sale in a week or two with the certificates.
-Speaking of paints and all, I really like how my painting class is going. It’s really my first time seriously painting with oil paints. I really like the work I’m producing. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made in such a short amount of time.
-Schooling wise, I only have a year left until I graduate with an associates. I’m probably going to take a year or two off to work, save up, and expand my portfolio before heading back to get a bachelors. To be honest, I’m really looking forward to that break.
-Some of my edits are actually getting some decent notes on them and that’s exciting. I love reading the tags on them. This also makes me want to start making more edits.
-I’ve actually had some free time so I’ve been playing Sims more often lately. I really love my cute lesbian couple and their adorable son.
-I’m finally able to catch up on my shows and books and other stuff too.
-I love my dogs. I’m so grateful for them. They’re basically my children.
-I got a new ipod touch to replace my old one that broke. The new one actually has more storage so I can have more songs and photos and stuff. Plus I got a cute floral case for it.
-Halsey’s new album is so good. I’ve had it on repeat all week.
-The midnight mint mocha frappuccino at Starbucks is a blessing. I’m pretty sure my blood is probably 80% coffee at this point - and I don’t even like coffee. Literally that frappe is the only one I really like from there. And there are way too many Starbucks around here for me to not get one when I’m craving one.
-I’m grateful for my job. I love my coworkers. I really like framing. I enjoy the steady paycheck. Also the employee discount is the greatest thing for a fine arts major like me.
-They’ve finally changed the radio station at work. It’s still an oldies station, but literally every song is a Bop - unlike before when there was like 5 good songs out of like 50.
-Speaking of work, I love our Saturday nights at Friday’s after work. It’s so nice to go out and unwind with some coworkers. Plus the endless apps are so good.
And I think that’s about it for now. It feels really good to look at all the positive in my life right now instead of focusing on the negative. Thank you, Ronnie 💖💖💖
