In some cases, the people who the prosecutors convicted filed appeals arguing that jury selection was biased and their convictions were overturned — but only after they had spent years behind bars.
The law professors are bringing the complaints, filed Monday with attorney grievance committees and shared first with Gothamist, as a way of finally holding the prosecutors accountable for violations that in some cases date back decades. The group, which calls itself Accountability NY, started submitting complaints against prosecutors accused of misconduct in 2021.
They said the violations are emblematic of a larger problem in the court system: attorneys illegally excluding jurors based on race and other aspects of their identity. Experts said it’s an illegal practice that undermines people's right to a fair trial — especially people of color.
The complaints name prosecutors in five district attorneys’ offices, including Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. In one 2018 case, a judge found that a prosecutor acted illegally when he struck all the Latino prospective jurors for a Latino man’s trial. In another that same year, a judge ruled that a prosecutor illegally removed the only two non-white people for the trial of an Afghan-American. In one case, a former prosecutor admitted to using notes filled with racist and sexist instructions — including “No Hispanics” and “Stay away from grandmotherly types” — to avoid choosing diverse juries in the 1990s.
Tumblr media
“Diversity is an essential safeguard,” said Peter Santina, managing attorney of Civil Rights Corps’ Prosecutorial Accountability Project, which helped to file the complaints. “A representative jury can mean the difference between someone being wrongfully convicted or not.”
When choosing jurors for a criminal trial, prosecutors and defense attorneys in New York are both allowed 10 to 20 peremptory challenges — or chances to dismiss a juror without providing a reason. But they aren’t allowed to dismiss a juror because of their race or religion, and if asked, they have to give a different reason for the dismissal. It’s up to a judge to decide if the reason is legitimate.
The reason for the rule is to prevent attorneys from shaping all-white or majority-white juries, which researchers have found engage in less rigorous deliberations, convict at higher rates and are more likely to sentence someone to death in capital cases.

ep 4 is the heart of this season’s pacing problems imo. i actually blame this on shows having such short seasons nowadays rather than a fault of this particular show (although i think they could’ve understood their medium’s limitations a bit better). like i love the concept of an episode where we hang out in moiraine’s childhood home and deal with all the emotional fallout of what the characters have experienced in the past 3 episodes, but it’s simply not a good use of space here. the things we actually need from this episode are lanfear + moiraine convincing logain to teach rand + quick intro to the tower coup + perrin learning about his powers. delete lan hanging out with alanna + everyone talking about nynaeve’s issues + the aforementioned moiraine family problems content sorry

Make way when I’m walking, pray when I’m talking it’s to you Fight for my attention, for your ascension you must prove ’cause if you can find it, you don’t confine it, you let it move Make way for the genie, scream for the dream me coming through
Have you ever played with a queen? I can show you what I mean I can make you feel free I got you and you'll never leave
Na-na-na-na-na-na Can you meet me on my level? Na-na-na-na-na-na Or baby, is your reign over? Na-na-na-na-na-na Can you battle with the devil? Na-na-na-na-na-na Or baby, is it Game Over?
Game Over
Game Over
(Have you ever played with a queen?) (I can show you what I mean)
I want your devotion, all your emotions in my hand I want your obsession, every affection, full command And if you defy me you won't survive me, you’ll be damned ’cause I am the giant, I am the diamond, not a man
Have you ever played with a queen? I can show you what I mean I can make you feel free I got you and you’ll never leave

For Twilight/Yor - #11. being distracted by thoughts about them?
This was supposed to be a fluff challenge, but this couple? All I could come up with was them being distracted by each other at tense moments, leading them to ANGST. So I had to slip it in with another ficlet idea I've been playing with for a while.
I hope you like it Stranger!
His and Yor’s anniversary was coming up. Their fake anniversary, according to their fake marriage license. He would have to do something for it, as both a thank you and a way to enforce their cover. Has he told any specific stories that might be important to play off of in an anniversary? He didn’t think so, most of the questions about their relationship actually turned into questions regarding how Anya was accepting Yor. He was pretty sure he had kept the details of his fake proposal and fake relationship vague for everyone else. Even Yuri, who would likely be the most inquisitive of the event, had been easily distracted by physical shows of affection and promises of love and loyalty.
Hmm, was it strange that they didn’t have a more detailed story than meeting at the tailor shop, dating, then proposal? While fine for a standard cover, anniversaries flew or sunk on small details remembered. He would have to incorporate something specific and unique enough to be true, while still simply enough that Yor could remember it if she is asked about it. Perhaps adding to their story through an elaborate anniversary gift would help her remember it better. It would have to be something Anya would not have noticed as a child, but not so romantic that it made Yor into a mess.
She liked roses, maybe he could have proposed to her in the city rose gardens, getting a rosebush planted in her honor, paired with that diamond rose barrette he saw on 12th street, could be—
The flash of an eye across the street, turned into a cough. WISE had a mission for him, but the bus wasn’t here yet. What could it be? None of the headlines from the news struck him as particularly suspicious. Maybe they wanted to have a preemptory meeting about how he wasn’t allowed to blow his budget on presents for Yor for their anniversary. He’d have to put together a budget proposal this time, that should throw WISE off long enough to make the purchases he needed.
“Papa, kisses then you can go to work. The bus is taking forever,” Anya said. “You shouldn’t be late.”
“Hmm? Sure,” he said, still planning his budget proposal. He pecked a kiss on Anya’s forehead, one on Yor’s lips, then started on his path to work, knowing where the agent would find him.
`
`
`
Anya was giggling madly as Yor put a hand to her lips. Her first kiss from her husband. Absentminded and over in a second. No time to panic, no huge build up. He seemed more distracted than anything, which was how he got her in the first place.
“Papa is flirting with Mama,” Anya teased. Then she got serious, “did Mama like it?”
Yor blushed, because, yes, she had liked it. It wasn’t so scary, not when it was Loid. However, “That’s not an appropriate question to ask me, Anya-san.”
“Mama did like it, but don’t worry, I won’t tell Papa, bye-bye!” Anya ran to get in line with the other children boarding the bus, and Yor was left to walk to work in a small daze.
It had clearly been a mistake, but she didn’t think she would mind becoming part of Loid and Anya’s goodbye ritual this way.

You're really going to decide to write multiple paragraphs about tailypo and its origins but you're going to claim its roots are solely white Appalachian??? Yeah a preemptory Google search will try to tell you that but literally 5 more minutes of effort would have shown you the story has specifically African-American origins.

Avatar: The Jericrew Leadership
I love both ATLA and DBH and thusly could not help but notice how well each member of the Jericrew fits each of the elements. So here, have some of my unasked-for thoughts on it lol xD
North: Firebender
- The Superficial Match: Frequently setting things on fire and advocating for violence  - The Philosophy: Fire = the element of power, the people of it defined by their passion, will, energy, and drive (also big “best defense is a good offense” vibes) - How it Fits the Character: North is perhaps the most outspokenly passionate about the deviant’s plight, has unbending will to see androids freed, and the will to see it through to the bitter end, even at the expense of her life (also advocates for preemptory strikes)
Josh: Earthbender
- The Superficial Match: Stubborn about his beliefs, “we have to stand our ground” - The Philosophy: Earth = the element of substance, the people of it are diverse and strong, persistent and enduring - How it Fits the Character: Has been one of those at Jericho the longest, stands his ground against North/unwilling to back down even in the face of lethal opposition (cough Freedom March) but before that was very much employing the more Earthen strategy of waiting for the right moment to act (even if he got too settled into that pattern/fell victim to inertia, which is another Earth trait/potential foible)
Simon: Airbender
- The Superficial Match: Favorite fighting style is to nope outta there - The Philosophy: Air = the element of freedom, their people detached from worldly concerns and peacemakers - How it Fits the Character: Intercede to keep the peace between North and Josh, ran Jericho before Markus took over as a safe haven detached from the world (”freedom” in the dark), concerned with preserving their people’s lives above all else
Markus: Waterbender
- The Superficial Match: As the only playable character of the Jericrew, his personality, decisions, and game trajectory are by far the most flexible among them - The Philosophy: Water = the element of change, the people of it are adaptive and inventive, and are held together by a sense of community and love  - How it Fits the Character: Markus is nothing if not a catalyst for change (drives the whole main plot of the game forward by taking propelling actions), can adapt to the humans’ response (engaging in that push/pull political/military dynamic), and in the Peaceful Demonstration routes he literally uses community (Sing) and/or love (Kiss North) to win the day

And a preemptory Prophet shows us salvation in the metaphor!

The skrull put his hand over Peggy’s, knowing that Steve would do exactly that to comfort her in a situation like this. “I’ll be careful. Don’t worry. But what about you. If there really are these…things…around. Are you being careful too?” The other skrull continued about their business as if this were an ordinary diner in an ordinary small town. The skrull disguised as Steve gave a warm and caring look to the only human within ten miles. "Have you told anyone else?" he added.
The sounds of eager chatter from another table fails to garner her notice as hiss hand curls about her smaller one. His promise is met with airs of unuttered skepticism, though it lurks a thousand fathoms deep in her eyes as they fixate upon him.
Are you being careful too? He presses.
Tumblr media
Careful is such an absurd descriptor. When has she ever deployed preemptory caution towards anything rather than charging right ahead with an impulsive plot? Painted, crimson lips bend to first admit a scoff, then a frown. “I try.” Jarvis would gift her accusatory look. One that lets Peggy know how contemptable that lie is. He is not here, not now to fussy over such things.
Instantly Peggy bristles at the next inquiry. Something about it combined with the intensity that shone in his eyes makes her feel unnerved. But this is Steve talking, her Steve. So why did she feel the urge to guard the answer so fiercely. “A trusted soul here and there. Chiefly, you.” A special emphasis is placed on his importance.  Casual, and tactfully freeing her hand to grasp her cup of tea, she prods. “Why?” Her own oaken orbs seeking him for answers.
“Steve, if you’re that worried, why don’t you stay at my place?” Peggy offered. It would allow her to more easily monitor him.

If Jarry and Megs have the gall to attempt a faux royal tour in a CW country, guaranteed BP will pull out the diplomatic big guns and exert bts pressure to ignore/ghost them, ie no meet and greets with any government officials, no gov't-funded security details, no high profile charity events, etc. In fact, after H/M's NYC stunt, BP/10 Downing have probably already put out discreet preemptory indications to that effect among their CW embassies.
It's not just that, The Queen would then be forced to do something about the titles. She can't have unauthorized family members swanning around in her territories giving off the impression that they somehow represent The Crown by extension.

“Didn't you say in one of your readings Markle would attack the Cambridge kids (likely George) during Jubilee? Are these Charlotte articles the beginning of this?”
I see the Charlotte articles more as preemptory PR. I think it’s an indication that Meghan’s (alleged, so far) behavior towards her is going to be confirmed and come out soon.
A synopsis of Valentine Low’s new book about the staff, called “Courtiers,” seems to suggest it might go into various bullying allegations, including those of Meghan by KP staff. If true, then perhaps the Charlotte stories are the Harkles trying to get ahead of the fury that will no doubt come.
Hi Nonny,
I agree. I also think that there is some damaging information on Meghan coming out, most likely in that book, but it could also be in any report released on the bullying investigation (my money is on the book though). If that is the case, or even if Meghan just thinks that is the case, then this PR is a very obvious attempt to deflect any information that will either support or confirm the "Meghan bullied/fat-shamed/slapped Charlotte" rumours.

Currently reading The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot. I am in the early stages but I’m already admiring her eloquent prose and perceptive observations.
Chapter 8, Mr. Tulliver’s Shows His Weaker Side is a marvelous rendering of empathy.❤️
Maggie Tulliver, “the little wench”, “spitfire “, is one of the most adorable and admirable girl/young woman protagonists I’ve encountered in literature. Her moral courage is especially impressive given the secondary status of women in Victorian times.
Some memorable excerpts:
“I wouldn’t make a downright lawyer o’ the lad - I should be sorry for him to be a raskill – but a sort of engineer, or a surveyor, or an auctioneer and vallyer, like Riley…” 😂
“Go, go! said Mr. Tulliver preemptorily, beginning to feel rather uncomfortable at these free remarks on the personal appearance of a being (the devil) powerful enough to create lawyers.”😂
“These bitter sorrows of childhood – when sorrow is all new and strange, when hope has not yet got wings to fly beyond the days and weeks, and the space from summer to summer seems measureless.” ❤️
“It is a wonderful subduer, this need of love – this hunger of the heart – as preemptory as that other hunger by which nature forces us to submit to the yoke and change the face of the world.”
“What novelty is worth that sweet monotony where everything is known, and loved because it is known?….These familiar flowers, these well remembered bird notes, the sky with its fitful brightness, these furrowed and grassy fields, each with a sort of personality given to it by the precious hedgerows– such things as these are the mother tongue of our imagination, the language that is laden with all the subtle inextricable associations the fleeting hours of our childhood left behind them. Our delight in the sunshine on the deep bladed grass today might be no more than the faint perception of wearied souls if it were not for the sunshine in the grass in the floor of years which still live in us and transform our perception into love.” ❤️
“In books there were people who are always agreeable or tender, and delighted to do things that made one happy, and did not show their kindness by finding fault. The world outside the books was not a happy one, Maggie felt; it seemed to be a world where people behave the best to those they did not pretend to love and that did not belong to them… there is no hopelessness so sad as that of early youth, when the soul is made up of wants and has no long memories, no superadded life in the life of others; though we who look on think lightly of such premature despair as if our vision of the future lightened the blind sufferer’s present.… Maggie was a creature full of eager, passionate longings for all that was beautiful and glad; thirsty for all knowledge; with an ear straining after dreaming music that died away and would not come near to her; with a blind, unconscious yearning for something that would link together the wonderful impressions of this mysterious life and give her soul a sense of home in it.”p239
“Hev a dog , Miss! They’re better friends nor (than) any Christian, said Bob…” p288. 🤣
“ Saints and martyrs had never interested Maggie so much as sages and poets.”

Book Review: The Viscount Who Loved Me (Bridgertons #2) by Julia Quinn
Tumblr media
This book could easily be re-titled "The Rake Who Loved Me" and still be equally as fitting. The slight word swap would hit the mark just as hard. In fact, I can't help but chuckle at the thematic resonance such a change in title would make seeing as how Anthony, the eldest son and child of the Bridgerton clan, is characterized in Lady Whistledown's papers as a Rake with a capital "R" from the outset, and all because he, unlike mere rakes, who are insipid immature fools who believe themselves to be dangerous to women, knows he is. Doesn't simply think he is. There's an indifferent rancor to a Rake's behavior, apparently. Idiocy is absent, sordid exploits are held in check, and impatience toward all of society's defects are pointedly expressed. Though he knows he'll be the subject of many a whisper, of many a matchmaking scheme, he'd much prefer it if he were left alone altogether. He neither wants nor seeks, cares nor chases, that type of attention or notoriety. Something about this, about Anthony's preemptory Rake-labelled foundation, rolls nicely into his early proclamation that he hopes to secure himself a loveless marriage. It also makes allowances for the gruff, overbearing, and vigilant hallmarks of his personality. He's been unimpressed by the misses and debutantes society has offered thus far. Why would that change now that he's decided to take a wife? It can't. It won't. It wouldn't...right? Oh, my sweet summer child, if only you knew! From the first chapter, it's clear Anthony is not the kind of man whose heart is easily caught let alone ensnared by conventional female adulation. That is why, in my opinion, Kate's distinct and unfiltered disdain for him is an aphrodisiac of sorts--it's seductive catnip. The fire of dislike she erects between them, that I-loathe-you, you-will-never-marry-Edwina quality, is what keeps him engaged. Knocks him off his shelf of apathy. Has him feeling alert and amused, treading uncertainly, for the first time in years. Perhaps in his entire life! Their instantaneous clashing, as one would have it, topples his Rakeness into complete and utter disrepair. So of course it makes sense then that he'd only be able to be brought to his knees by a woman who insults rather than cajoles, who glares instead of simpers, who isn't afraid to step hard on his toes any time it's warranted, right? Anthony is a character whose sensibilities can only be awakened by challenge. By opposition. By the type of person who will provoke him to life. And, really, there is no better provocation out there than Kate Sheffield. She knows how to stir and stoke, let me tell you! Girl's got a knack for it! For me, what's most fun about this book is how Quinn toys with the thin line that exists between dislike and desire. Anthony and Kate ghost back and forth between these two extremes the moment they meet, providing a template for many tense moments and steamy exchanges to come later on. Over time, as they continue to interact, their ambivalent squabbling and competitive corgi-chasing, Pall Mall, lake tumbling ploys give way to a much deeper connection than either one of them thought possible. I appreciate the sliding scale progression of that, especially since it manages to preserve their charged banter, marching it from enemy territory into lovers territory with ease. Anthony's reasoning for seeking a loveless marriage is also more appealing in this book than it is/will be in the TV series. I prefer the fact that it's connected to his father here instead of to previous romantic heartbreak/trauma from a woman. There's emotional density in how he has an irrational unconquerable fear that he will die young like his father, and as a result of that, he intends to keep himself closed off from the possibility of love at all costs so as not to make things harder for himself. It makes him feel more layered as a character. Not as rakishly "unfeeling" or "indifferent" as readers are encouraged to believe at the beginning. Kate, whose mother died when she was still a child, has to work through her own parental trauma as well. The parallelism of them both having to combat an illogical fear is another factor, or element, rather, which succeeds in tethering them together more. They're able to provide the shoulder of support, the ear of understanding, the other needs. What's not to love about that? There were a few lines or sections of dialogue that made me uncomfortable, though. Anthony can come across as a little domineering about what he "needs" or demands sexually, too impatient to wait. It wasn't enough to pollute my overall enjoyment of their romance or anything, but enough to make me "eeeek" or "yikes" in response to certain turns of phrase that he used. Despite that, I found this to be a thralling and entertaining romance. Bridgerton sibling dynamics continue to enchant me so I'm looking forward to diving into Benedict and Colin's stories next!
