I personally have seen more ultra JFM critical and favourable to YZN fics but admittedly I prodigiously filter for pro-Jiang Cheng/Jiang Cheng-friendly fics so that probably has something to do with it. The worst take I've seen has been that Madame Jin would be horrified at how Madame Yu treated her children and WWX and angry and JFM for not stopping it, an interpretation that made me black out.

Fascinating!!!!!!!!! I obviously love Jiang Cheng also, but I do read a lot of wangxian, which I think is really relevant. While I do think there's some gender stuff at work, I think the bigger piece is about which parent is kind to the protagonist and which dislikes him. If it was YZY who loved and mentored WWX and JFM who was jealous and angry, then I think fandom positions in that regard would be reversed.

........but yeah that's an incredible take. Mme Yu and Mme Jin actually have strikingly similar parenting styles, now that I think about it!

But mostly my views about YZY are informed by the fact that I personally think she's a MILF who should get to do whatever she wants.

Because I know this story arc is a big commitment, I wanted to put together some spoilers for folks in case they have hard aversions to any pairings or outcomes.

Pro Jiang Cheng

Pro Jin Guangyao

It does portray YZY and JFM a little harshly (I’d say canon), but I think it also will portray them with sympathy both through the different perspectives of their children and over time. 

Pairings

Wangxian will be a pairing throughout, but they’ll spend long times apart (helloooo canon)

Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan will get together in Book 3, and yes, they will have Jin Ling. There may also be some Mianmian spice in here - it’s a long way away and I haven’t written it yet. 

Mingcheng is the endgame pairing, although their relationship will be the most consistent throughout. They won’t get together until Book 4 because there is no underage and no weird power dynamic between them.

I have been very vocal on this subject on twitter but since @hisohiso enabled me, here is why JFM is the worst and you should all hate him.

MDZS is filled with awful fathers. We have the Lan father who literally abandoned his family, we have JGS who’s JGS so like...it’s a lot. And we have JFM. All three of them have this thing in common. They are awful fathers (I mean, if even WRH looks more like a better father than you, you should start questioning yourself) and awful husbands. JFM, tho, JFM is one of the worst cause he does in a way that isn’t as oblivious at first sight. Because you know, as long as you’re good to the MC, it’s okay to be the worst asshole to others, especially if those others aren’t head over heels to said MC. (yeah, I’m salty, so what?) Let’s start with his treatment of Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng, who if you remember well, is his only son. JFM might have dreamed to have WWX as his son but he wasn’t. Even WWX says it himself. And yet, he favors him all the time while blaming his son and criticizing him, never once offering him kind words. Even when he says “Good job” when WWX reminded him JC helped during the whole cave thing, he only says so while looking at WWX completely dismissing his JC. It could look like he saw how different JC and WWX were but....1) it wouldn’t make it right. You have kids, you treat them equally!!! 2) he was already acting this way towards JC BEFORE he brought WWX to LP. 

Can you imagine? All his life until then JC probably thought that his father was just a distant man, that it was his personality and there, he sees that it isn’t true. JFM is distant only to him. Everyone knows it. JC knows it. Madam Yu knows it and even WWX knows it. He might downplay it but he admits it in the end. 

Now, I know a lot of people hate Yu Ziyuan for her treatment of WWX and while it was bad (but widely overexaggerated imo, the way she is depicted in fics is just...well, I guess that if you are not the “hot dad”, then you are a bitch), she was as much as a victim in this whole family dynamics. Does she pass on the abuse? yes definitely, she was an adult, she should have handle it differently, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t a victim of this whole mess too. Because listen. A lot of people see the marriage between JFM and YZY as a choice from YZY, like she was the one who trapped him into it. It wasn’t. She was the third daughter in ancient China society. So when her parents decided she had to marry him, then she did...even if they didn’t like each other and JFM was probably in love with WWX’s mother. So they were married. They don’t like each other but they could have had a civil union but instead, YZY had to suffer from gossips because of the way JFM always REFUSED TO EXPLAIN HIS SHIT. He never ever did. Let her live through all this bullshit ALONE. She bore his two children just to see him dismiss them completely. She tells him she was as much mistress of LP than him (and frankly, she probs could have beaten his ass, eyes closed, hand behind her back) but he always diminishes her authority (we see it each time he frees WWX from his rightful punishments). Can you imagine? JFM had nothing but his sect. I mean it in a bad way. It’s not the same way as JC later. JFM just inherited the sect and that’s all. He was known as a Sect leader, an average one with that...But Yu Ziyuan? She was the Violet Spider, she had won her reputation. Woman cultivators and powerful ones are a rarity and yet..but because of him, she was reduced to the awful woman JFM married. Also, I highly recommend you to read this thread and here on why the way he acted towards her was even worse than you think when you know more cultural/contextual information.  Back to JC now. JFM doesn’t like JC because he looks like his mother. Can you believe this? Something Jiang Cheng had literally no say in, and yet, JFM treats him like a lower son because he looks like his mother. As if it weren’t fucked up enough, the man keeps telling JC that he doesn’t understand the sect motto but who better than JC to know what it means????? Like I said earlier. JFM inherited the sect and for all his talk about “attempting the impossible”, he didn’t do shit to actually attempt it. He did nothing. YMJ didn’t thrive under his command. Worst, YMJ was burned to ashes. JC, for all his insecurities, inherited YMJ...what was left of it. AND HE BROUGHT IT BACK ALONE. I put an emphasis on alone cause neither WWX nor YL had a thing to do with it. After JC “got his core back”, WWX disappeared for 3 months, and yet, by the time he reappeared JC already had gathered a new war force, alone at 17. After the SC, he had to rebuild LP the way he remembered it and had to see his brother leave him for the Wen. Shit happened and he was left alone, no more brother, no more sister....and a nephew to care for. And yet??? JC thrived, thanks to him, YMJ went from nothing back to the place in the 4 top Sects. It’s even more impressive when you think that the 3 other Sect were lead by the 3zuns. They were allies, JC was alone against the world...and yet he raised his nephew, led his sect, made it thrive so much that he could loose 400 nets and not care about them being refounded. And by the end of the novel, no other sect thrives as much as YMJ. Gusu has a sect leader in seclusion, the Jins have to rebuild everything and regain a reputation and everyone still thinks Qinghe is lead by a headshaker. This isn’t attempting the impossible, this is crushing it altogether. JFM WHO ???  JFM will go down on history for being allegedly cheating on his wife. History will only remember Jiang Cheng, the Sect leader who went above the sect motto. And finally, he’s ugly. We know, for a fact, that JC is handsome, he’s described this way in the novel. We also know he looks like his mother, which means, she was a gorgeous woman. But then, we also know, Yan Li is described as average. Where does that come from you ask? From JFM’s ugly ass, that’s where it comes from.

I think the reason people don't really comment in universe about Lotus Pier and the irresponsible handling that Madam Yu did at the battle of her home front is that they generally view it as tragic and heroic when really it was all preventable. I think I know how MDZS might view it as running away if the Madam Yu was actually responsible and ordered the disciples to run away and tell the civilians to gather their most precious valuables beforehand then they are going to be mocked. I don't really get the culture since I'm still confused about it myself but I believe to them running away is a sign of weakness when staying put and fighting it out even if it is futile from the start is more heroic. Really Madam Yu should take a page out of Erwin Smith book now that a real leader.

Mm... no. Not true. You know how I know that? LXC ran. He took as much of the Lan sect's knowledge as he could carry and he ran and hid! And no one thinks any less of him for it! The survival of the sect leader and the sect is more important than personal pride. JGS staying out of the Sunshot Campaign at first... also isn't seen as a big problem; he's still the most respected sect leader! The only reason they fight is because YZY's personal pride would rather the entire sect die than she have to take a slight; the standing of the sect would not be damaged. In fact given how they respond to JGS I suspect she would be more likely to be praised for her quick thinking in saving the sect than mocked for giving in.

And... Erwin Smith? Really? That's your example for who YZY should be like rather than sacrificing the sect? Now, it's been a very long time since I last read AoT, but (setting aside the issues with suggesting Chinese characters should be more like the characters in something so... pro-imperial-Japan, shall we say) remind me, what was the average death toll on the missions he sent his people out on on a regular basis? 80%? 90%? Something ridiculously high, I know that. Perhaps not the best role model when the goal here is getting fewer people killed.

Love the argument about context. What if (bear with me, but what if) it was not acceptable to hit people when you are having a bad day? What if being in a bad place mentally does NOT mean you can take that out on people around you, even violently? What if it was not actually acceptable to hit CHILDREN under your care, even when you are having a bad day? The actual context just makes it worse. I know violence is pretty normalized in this society, but JC doesn't get a pass for having a bad day.

YES. Everything you just said 💯. jiang cheng (and to a lesser extent yzy) have inspired some truly appalling rhetoric. There seems to be an apologist/victim blaming niche in the fandom that’s dedicated to justifying the behavior of a fictional character at all costs, when his raison d'être IS being an antagonist -frequently fully crossing into villain domain. It’s just exhausting to deal with. These days I honestly feel like I can’t inject sufficient satire and sarcasm in my responses to obviously & indubitably differentiate them from the zealous absurdity of some pro jc ‘metas’ I’ve encountered.

I wonder how different the jiangs' lives would've been if YZY died when JC and JYL and WWX were young? 1st pro I think of is there would be no one to abuse WWX for daring to exist, also without YZY around to use the kids as ammunition against JFM and undermine him every time he tries to teach JC how to be a sect leader maybe JC would turn out less toxic and selfish?

Oh, things would have been way better. WWX would be infinitely happier of course, and if JFM wasn’t having to fight YZY’s influence he might actually have successfully taught JC a few morals! Really the logical conclusion here is that someone should’ve just murdered YZY.

I realized that what made me hate JC in the fandom are his fans and not at all because of the constant apologism (the weirder by the second headcanons to absolve JC of his each of his actions or opinions are actually really amusing in a train wreck can’t stop looking kind of way) but because it means that all fandom creations will be about uwu powerless baby JC who luv his ungrateful kind-of-a-disaster of brother with all his heart, and on top of the crime of WWX’s character assassination, I 1/3

just have zero interest in a pity party for JC or any other character, actually. I would have loved explorations of the complex love-hate relationship he has with WWX, the social commentary about their different social positions and roles, how JC is continuing YZY’s cycle of abuse and how sad and bad it is for him and for people around him, or a post canon redemption arc. So many interesting directions to explore! But I know that if I click on JC-centric fic, all I’ll ever get will just 2/3

be “poor JC who did nothing wrong ever, left by cruel WWX to raise a baby alone 😢” and it’s so boring (which is like the worst possible crime for a fic haha) and makes me avoid anything where JC is featured in any important capacity like the plague.3/3

You know, that’s a good point. All the pro-JC stuff I’ve seen is so blatantly against canon or so filled with abuse apologism and victim-blaming that it pisses me off, or just... painfully bland. Like the stereotypical straight white man villain (except not white, obviously) whose horrific crimes get brushed under the rug because he’s attractive and flirts creepily with the female lead. There’s nothing original in it, there’s no heart... it’s just... some guy having everything he did swept away because he’s a sad pretty boy. And yeah, overwhelmingly fanworks involving him have to include a few lines about how WWX is just the worst, it’s all his fault that JC is alone, poor ickle JC left raising a baby... It’s repetitive and dull when it’s not infuriating. Which is a shame; as you say, there’s a lot of ways to go with JC! But it’s always the same, every time. I think the complete lack of originality might be the worst thing about the stans. 

...Well, I say that. They have some fascinating takes, and I’m... kind of glad they keep to the cookie-cutter mold in fanworks, considering them. *thinks about the ‘WWX giving JC his golden core was as bad as rape’ thing* *shudders*
