Isn't Lulu so cute?? She probably had to beg for days to convince Vlad to make such a cheesy gesture…

God this one was especially hard, not really because of what I was drawing but because of how. It made me learn about a bazillion things not to repeat ever again.

All things considered though, it came out pretty good! I wanted to give up so many times and there were so many catastrophes I'm really surprised in how clean it looks.

I'm even more surprised that I was able to push through and bring it to the finish despite it all, it's something to celebrate ;-;

A lil' summary of what this piece taught me ⤵

I really need to study the rest of the human anatomy. The legs were difficult, the feet too. I only realize this now because I mostly draw torsos and simple poses. Also, first time I draw characters interacting – it was fun but it's really something I need to practice more!

If I plan on using the sketch as lineart, please for the love of God use an opaque brush. The amount of time I spent fixing the lineart because it was semi-transparent, I might as well have drawn 3 layers of proper lineart.

Keep an eye on the background color. Because of some transparency stuff, I didn't realize some parts of the drawing only looked right with the current bg color – so when I thought I was done and changed it, I stared in horror at the ugly artifacts all around the drawing. It was painful to fix.

Sometimes it's easier to just draw over the sketch, taking the lines I like, instead of cleaning it up. Because using the sketch layer – especially with an opacity brush – leaves around a ton of barely visible artifacts. I had to "select opaque" to see them and clear them out, and it was also painful.

Generally, going into a drawing without a plan for what style it's gonna be is a bad idea and results in a lot of problems down the line.

Better fix any problems I have with the drawing as early as possible, because I'll end up fixing it anyway, only if I'm too far in the process it'll cost me more time.

I need to stop drawing too detailed an anatomy if I know it's gonna get covered by clothes anyway… T-T

Phew, I'm still shocked that I managed to make a decent piece even after all these problems. Somehow I feel pretty good about it, I think the joy of seeing it finished made all my bad experience with it go away.

It's great, especially since I've been struggling a lot with self-doubt about my creative projects recently; this shows me that no matter how crappy something seems to be, if only I push through and finish it, all that bad energy turns into incredibly good feelings of accomplishment and pride.

Hope that's useful; now I really want to make a mini story game and see how it turns out…

top 5 manga/doujins

okay i spent a lot of time thinking about this and i don’t think i can really rank them in any significant way other than the order that they popped into my head after reading this and hopefully that will speak for itself

1. Fukaboku

its fuckiiiiiiiiin fukaboku babeyyyyyyyy!!!! the first chapter of this dropped a couple of months after i began understanding myself as nb and it just continued to kill it for like 8-ish chapters afterwards, during which i ended up finding the courage to actually think of myself as an nb person rather than [assigned gender]. i feel really weird about putting this as #1 cuz as the months go on, it’s becoming increasingly clear that what i want from fukaboku and what it wants to do with its premise are gonna become harder and harder to resolve with each other, but it’ll always have a special hold over me cuz it was the #1 thing i was looking forward to reading every day for like 6-ish months www

2. My story of being loved

yeah this kinda sucks. i reread it just now and one of the dramatic plot twists actually made me burst out laughing. but there’s something really sincere and sweet about it?? i don’t like reading into works in this way but it really does feel like the author just wrote this to communicate something to a specific type of person in the most blunt way possible aka a thinly-veiled author insert character who spends most of the oneshot reacting to the other girl. i think a lot of why i like this one so much is cuz even all of its’ weird writing decisions feel like the manga tripping over its own balls because it’s so excited to sell you this specific story

3. Her Pet

this one’s a little rough because while it’s not overtly horny about its high school-aged cast there’s definitely a lot of horny undertones to it and i dont want to eat my own ass for her pet because its absolutely written and marketed with that in mind but it’s also the only story about bullying that i’ve ever actually connected to specifically because of this, because of how it shows how bullying fucks up your ideas of romance, intimacy, and sexuality, because of how it showed a character who got abused for so long that she was unable to create an intimate relationship with an entirely different person without recreating aspects of that abuse, because of how even the happy ending where she gets over all of this has her relapse into this sort of thinking (its played off as kind of a joke but it still sticks out in my mind a lot because MAN). it’s genuinely a really dense piece of work, narratively, but it’s really worth it and imo it’s one of the best manga/comic/manhwa out there about abuse because even though it’s steeped in melodrama all of the neat narrative choices about the aftereffects of gayoon’s shitty school life bleed into the text in a bunch of really subtle ways? there’s definitely some narrative tension into Wanting To Do A Melodrama With A Whacky Slightly Horny Marketable Hook and Wanting To Be Tasteful And Frank About It(which, to its credit, is the one that wins out most of the time) but it gets resolved really well by the time the whole thing ends off.

4. Girl’s last tour

If girl’s last tour didn’t exist i absolutely wouldn’t be doing art right now. I spent 2 years feeling extremely exhausted with contemporary pop art (both in anime/manga and broader pop culture) and images in general because i felt like i was looking at the same images repeated ad infinitum reduced into the barest of shapes like some night in the woods type thing. artistically, girl’s last tour felt like the one thing that actually understood what i was going through. reading the manga, yuuri and chiito are both drawn as these vague shapes that are definitely meant to be people but feel like they are animated by the wind rather than by like, muscles, or something. their shapes bleed into each other, and into their surroundings, and it feels like if you poked a spoon into any page of the manga you could stir it around and see these shapes swirl into each other before slowly becoming even more indecipherable. even the architecture feels vague, meant to give off the IMPRESSION of a building/monolith in such a way that it sometimes feels like the drawings are barely holding themselves together. like if you looked at a road too hard it would break in half. this is a really hard thing to communicate but i hope that you get what i am saying. the art of GLT felt like it embodied the same feeling i had for years at that point, where i felt like my lineart was barely holding myself together, and if i let my guard down for a second i would spill into the floors and drains of the buildings around me and only be able to exist by being acted upon. with that in mind, it was absolutely lifechanging that the actual narrative content of glt is about two people who are alienated from their environment in every meaningful way and no doubt have the same variety of brain shit i do, but are still able to find happiness even just by being alive. There’s a longer version of this part where i go on to talk about what the narrative actually does and the larger tkmiz mythos surrounding it, and how THAT became it’s own obsession that used to be an extension of my love for glt but now exists as the main thing and w glt as an extension of THAT. but this is maybe getting too long and i think you probably get the idea now. i know this is a lot coming from someone who only does one okay art thing every other month but like even though it makes me feel like shit 90% of the time drawing stuff is the one part of my life i feel like i actually have some Ws in, and without glt and without tkmiz’s larger work in general, i wouldn’t even have that much going on

5. vector spectacle

to be honest, vector spectacle isn’t nearly my favourite touhou doujin(at chirei no contest), but it feels so special just because of how unlike anything else i’ve read it is. There’s so much energy in the pages, it’s basically a pop-up book. i can feel the almost nauseating, manic, energy bouncing from page to page, that itself feels directed at nothing and everything all at once; at whatever point in time this was drawn, wherever in the world it was drawn, the person who drew this felt this exact emotion

I Wanna See Your Shine Spark!!

Today marks the JP release of VA-11 HALL-A on Switch and PS4! I’m so excited to celebrate, and plan to over the course of today, tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday with some special illustrations.

To kick things off, I’ve decided to go with my favorite girls –and Glitch City’s best idol singer Lilim- *Kira*Miki!

Miki instantly because one of my favorite characters during my first play-through of VA-11 HALL-A. I really loved her design and liked her character arc. I won’t give away any spoilers other than saying that I hope a lot of people who are new to the games come to love her too: she’s a very deep character and quite interesting!

That being said, I’d actually like to go into detail about this picture, largely because this was a multi-day sketch and color illustration as opposed to my typical in-a-day process. I really had to dig deep and think about how I wanted to pose her, how I wanted to depict her, and ultimately, the vibe I wanted to come from the picture.

I have to admit that this is my most ambitious piece to date, and what a wonderful undertaking it was! This is a bit of a page stretch, so apologies in advance, but I really just want to gush.

So here goes!

In General

So overall, I went with a much more saturated palette than I usually do, playing largely off of Miki’s pink-red eyes and her blue hair and character elements.

There’s a lot of work with gradients in this picture: no specifically as the sole element of the background, but the accent and highlight Miki in different ways. Speaking of highlights, I used a simple white highlight set to Overlay: I felt that it was best not to have too many colors on her because of the very active background and the element of her holding a drink.

(Fun Fact: The bisexual flag colors in the background are a complete accident, but like… what a happy accident for me, a bi/pan person!)

*Kira*Miki

I really wanted Miki to have a fun pose, and I haven’t done much with sitting recently, so I decided that her sitting a bit elegantly would be fun. I also wanted her to hold a drink, primarily since VA-11 HALL-A is a game centered around bartending and drinking, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic. The Blue Fairy –as you can see by the name– is an alcohol-optional drink, but more on that later. Right now, I wanna focus on Miki herself.

At first, her hair was closer to her body to have more volume rather than flow. This was because I imagined her shoulders being high until I tried to mimic that pose and found it immensely uncomfortable, and decided to drop her shoulders and have her drink clutched in the arm that would be slung across her stomach. To better flow with her new position, I decided that having her hair flowing behind her balanced the picture and centered her a bit better: as a bonus, it ate up more empty space, and didn’t make the right side feel too bare. Unfortunately, I had to counteract that with the left-side being awfully empty until I struck on the idea to add text behind her.

Most interesting are her legs: I have no clue what Miki’s legs look like, and in game, we only see a bust and half-sprite. So, I went with something simple and decided that purple-pink ballet flats would be fine.

(I’m still not good at drawing shoes, which is why so many of my pieces are either girls with socks or from the knees up. Or maxi skirts/dresses.)

Her hair is one of my favorite parts: not only did I do shadow, I did midtones and highlights when I typically only do highlights and some shadow work. I really wanted her to have this very stylish, playful look to her hair. I really like how much more depth it added, and think that in future pictures, I’ll have a lot more tones involved in how I color hair and even skin.

Additionally, Miki has interior coloring on her lines. I left to outside black so there would be some contrast between her and the background, but I used a lot of purples and blues to soften elements. I’ve actually been doing this bit by bit in my art, and this was the first piece where I let that extend to some of the exterior lines too.

Background Work

Making Miki was actually the easy thing to do: making the background was much, much harder. Usually, I do one of two things for backgrounds: a flat color or a gradient. Sometimes, I mix it up, specifically if it’s fanart. Most times… I don’t. A lot of that is because I haven’t really focused much on background work, though I plan to this year.

For this piece, I really wanted to do something a bit more stylized and because Miki is essentially an android, I decided a glitch background would be cool. Problem was I wasn’t sure how to do something with that as the idea.

So I improvised.

What I ended up doing was overlaying a bunch of white squares on top of each other with some smaller squares to give the effect of pixels. I then put that through a mosaic filter, then flipped everything to Overlay. I did end up using a gradient, but I think that’s okay because laying the pixelated squares let different colors bleed through.

Over everything is a blend of a Static (TV Static, more specifically) Brush and a Gradient done in reverse so it added a bit of color to the highlights and everything in general.

A Blue Fairy for a Blue Fairy

This is actually a really good time to talk about the Blue Fairy drink I drew, which works really well with the pinky-purple of the background. I wanted it to be really saturated and pop, and it certainly does!

I drew the lineart for the drink separately because of how I wanted to blend everything. I wanted the drink to have a somewhat sci-fi feel, and to me, that meant it needed to glow and have a bit of sparkle inside it. So I overlayed some of the same blue color with an airbrush, and shaped it so it had a nice, sharp glow.

I also added more liquid than would have been able to fit because I wanted it to look really dynamic. A lot of this image wasn’t about having realistic boundaries: it was about creating something really fun.

I chose a Blue Fairy specifically because it’s a drink that can change Miki’s actions at a point in VA-11 HALL-A: as an alcohol-optional drink, it can be served virgin or... laden with as much Karmotrine as you wanna put in. Spoilers: this can quickly make Miki drunk, and can lead to some rather candid statements about her personality and her role as an idol. It’s a really deep moment, and has stuck with me since my first play-through.

(I also chose a Blue Fairy because it fit the blue-purple-pink motif I was going for. It let me play off of Miki’s hair and give her a bit more color up top to make her further pop against the pink.)

The Blue Fairies –completely inspired by Zelda, naturally- were just a cute little addition I decided on last minute. I thought they were cute, and though they have nothing to do with the actual game or Miki, they fit and kind of ate up some space that I didn’t want to be empty.

All in All

This was a really long project for me: I think I spent about 20 hours on everything, coloring and recoloring and adjusting until I had something I really, really love. Honestly, I’ll probably be turning this into a print for myself because I’d love to have it on my wall. I know my art will look different next year –heck, next month even– but this… I’ll always be proud of this piece.

This is only the first of two or three more images over the course of the end of the work week and the weekend. I’m glad I showed this one off first: the others are gonna be pretty great, but this… just had a really special place in my heart.

Beauty & the Beast

A/N: so remember when i mentioned rereading the Lunar Chronicles and got inspired to write fairy tale aus for wanna one. well, here’s the first installment of the “Happily Ever After” series!

Pairing: Wanna One’s Daehwi x Reader

Genre: fairy tale!au, fluff, slight violence

Warnings: slight violence

Everyone in the city knew of Lee Daehwi, probably the prettiest boy to have ever graced the Earth

Just a sweet boy who works in his family’s flower shop

Always has a different flower tucked in his lil shirt pocket depending on the mood

One time he had the flower tucked behind his ear and everyone just cooed bc wow what a cutie

On the other hand, there was you, probably the most infamous underground fighter in the city

You pretty much spent your days at the gym, punching away at the worn bag

Sometimes people will catch you at the rundown auto shop, grease streaked across your cheeks and sweat staining the neck of your white tank

The best part is the tattoo that’s on your right bicep of a wolf entirely done in lineart

Half the city gets scared when they catch a glimpse of it, but it’s aite, as long as they don’t bug you too much

Cut back to Daehwi watering the daffodils on display in the window as he hums to himself (probably a blackpink song lol)

Anyways it’s getting close to closing time, so Daehwi does one last check around the shop before he hears the front doorbell chime

And ta-dah, he finds himself face to face with Daniel

“Uh, hyung what are you doing here?”

“Can I borrow a couple hundred?”

“Flowers? Well-”

“Dollars, Daehwi, dollars”

Turns out Daniel owed you hella money bc you fixed his motorbike for him, and if he doesn’t cough up the sum you’re kicking his ass

Daniel prefers his ass not kicked btw, and Daehwi was the only one out of his friends with a stable job lmao

“I don’t have a couple hundred dollars to lend out, but let me talk to this person”

“Daehwi,,,,,,they’ll actually break you”

“Nothing a little diplomacy doesn’t fix, c’mon, show me where this repair shop is”

Daehwi finds himself standing in the side of town his parents specifically told him not to venture into

Your co-workers stood out in front of the shop, leaning against the walls, smoking cigarettes while conversing in hushed whispers (they were both expecting fathers and exchanging tips to each other)

Daniel was practically shaking in his shoes while Daehwi strode right into the shop

“Is Y/N here?”

“Alpha? They’re in the ring tonight”

“The ring?”

“Go right from the shop and cut into the alleyway. There are stairs that will take you straight to it.”

Yeah, Daniel was scared shitless at this point, and Daehwi was intimidated too, but hey, someone’s gotta talk this whole cash owing thing out

So the two boys go down to the ring and they find themselves standing behind a crowd of people surrounding the ring, shouting and cheering, waving dollar bills in the air as they placed bets

Daehwi starts looking around

“Hey Daniel, what does Y/N look like?”

“Scary, just really scary”

“,,,,,,,,like, any other descriptions?”

“Uh, they have a wolf tattoo on their arm”

Daehwi continues dragging Daniel through the crowd trying to find this infamous Y/N until suddenly the entire crowd still

He looked up at the center of the room and finally noticed the boxing ring that stood in the middle of the room

“What’s going on?”

“The fight’s about to start”

And that was when you stepped up into the ring, your face stony and cold

A shiver ran through Daehwi’s spine when he saw how apathetic you were

The crowd cheered for you, their screaming becoming louder when you took your hoodie off to reveal your tattoo

The fight starts and quickly in you got a punch in, quickly bouncing back and ducking under your opponent’s swing

You swipe your leg under their feet to trip them, and once they fell, you pounced

Daehwi watches in horror and turns to Daniel

“You owe that monster money?????”

“Y/N? Yeah, you understand why I needed to borrow some cash?”

Your swings became even more rapid, but your face remained apathetic

When you were sure they weren’t coming back up, you got off of them, and faced the crowd and raised your bloodied fist in victory

Quickly the crowd cheered, at least, the ones that betted your victory

You left your unconscious opponent in the ring and left for the locker room

Daehwi saw this chance and quickly shook his head, trying to lessen his fear

“Let’s go, Daniel, before we lose them”

The two of them wove through the crowd and followed you into the locker room

“You’re not allowed in here” you said apathetically, not even sparing the two boys a glance

Daehwi took in a deep breath before speaking

“My friend here owes you money, but he can’t pay you back right away, is it possible he-”

“If he can’t pay me back, he shouldn’t have brought the bike in”

“Yeah but-”

“He still needs to pay me back”

“Well-”

“Labor it is”

It was Daniel’s time to speak up

W-wait a minute, I already have a job, I can’t just-”

You finally turned to glance at the two boys

“Not my problem, you still owe me $300″

Daehwi glanced at Daniel worriedly and then chimed in

“What if, what if I worked off his debt?”

You looked over at him

“You’re not the one who owes me $300″

“Well, yeah, but I only work at my family’s flower shop, and that’s not even a job, so I can work for you for however long until Daniel’s debt is paid”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because he’s my friend”

And tbh you couldn’t argue with the guy since he already made up his mind, so you just shrugged

That’s how Daehwi ended being your little runner

He pretty much was in charge of running out and buying stuff you needed, like equipment for the bike you were working on or antiseptic for the cut on your cheek, normal stuff

Like, for a whole month you barely acknowledged his existence, only giving him a nod or a hum or a request, nothing more, nothing less

Well, that’s gonna change soon

Bc one night when he was out buying you some food since you were working late in the shop, some asshat you beat up last week in the ring decided to hassle him a bit

“Hey, you’re Alpha’s pet aren’t you?”

“I’m their assistant”

Daehwi quicken his pace a bit, but the guy grabbed him by the collar and pushed him against the wall

“Alpha’s not gonna like it much if his pet’s a little damaged,” the guy taunted, pulling his fist back

Daehwi quickly shut his eyes and after a couple seconds, he realized the fist never came

He opened his eyes to find you standing behind the dude holding his fist and,,,,,,,,,,Daehwi’s hella lucky he’s not that guy right now bc wow, you look like you want to kill him

Which you didn’t do, you just beat the living shit out of him and left the guy propped up against the wall

Daehwi trailed after you, the bag of food, now cold, in his hand

And tbh his heart kinda fluttered a bit knowing you beat up that guy for him, but it’s probably just because he’s your runner, nothing important

lmao jokes on you daehwi

And his unspoken question kinda just hangs in the air

Why?

“Did you get my food?”

Daehwi blinked at your back for a second before handing you the bag

You looked in and smiled, like genuinely smiled and wow Daehwi felt his heart skip agAIN

Bc who knew the scariest underground fighter in all of the city had the cutest smile on earth?

“Sweet, they gave me an extra fortune cookie”

And tbh after that night, things got a little bit more comfortable between the two of you

Like, the whole reason as to why you never really interacted much with Daehwi was bc he was so pretty you couldn’t say anything substantial without being flustered

Every time he asked you about your day, you could practically feel your cheeks reddening

Or the one time he smiled at you and gave you a thumbs up after another victory, you swore you felt your heart race

But, you’re awkward, and you knew your reputation in the city, no way Daehwi would see you as anything other than an underground fighter, a monster

Yet, the walls you placed around yourself started to crumble a bit around the edges

Especially one day when you decided

“I’m teaching you how to fight”

Daehwi’s eyes widened like saucers

“Why?”

“Bc the next time some punk decides to mess with you, I might not be there”

Wow, another heart fluttering moment for Daehwi

You take him down to the little gym nearby, giving a little nod to the other people there at the odd hour of the night

Daehwi just trails after you and ends up finding himself standing in front of a punching bag

“Throw your best punch”

Daehwi looks at you incredulously before pulling his fist back and swinging at the bag,,,,,only for you to let out a little chuckle at how weak it was

His cheeks flushed, half from embarrassment and the other half from hOW CUTE THAT CHUCKLE WAS

You take his hand into yours (the two of you are blushing so hard jfc)

“Here, fold your hand like this,”

You then guide his fist back

“And swing like this”

Daehwi could practically hear his heart pounding in his ear

Once his hand made contact with the punching bag, you realized exactly how close in proximity the two of you were

You quickly pulled away and cleared your throat

“Yeah, just practice, I’ll show you which places to aim for once your punch gets better”

And it became a little routine, after you finish work in the shop and you didn’t have a match, you take Daehwi to the gym and afterwards you buy him ice cream

His smile every time you present him with the vanilla cone just makes your cheeks heat up, and eventually one night Daehwi just

“Hey, Y/N, I like you”

You almost spat out your ice cream

“W-wh- are you sure?”

“Mhm”

“But, why? I beat up people for a living. I scare the living shit out of half the city, and you only hang out with me to pay off your friend’s debt, which by the way, is paid off.”

You awkwardly sat there next there next to Daehwi, letting your ice cream dip onto the pavement

“Because you’re cute.”

Yeah, you dropped your cone at this point

“Even though you seem scary at first, you’re actually really cute. Your laugh and smile make my insides warm. You’re really patient when teaching me. You’re also very protective of me, and you buy me ice cream often. Plus,”

“Plus?”

“I want to know more about you, because you’re so much more than a scary underground fighter. You’re so much more than Alpha; you’re Y/N”

And like wow bc who knew he’d see you that way????

You were so used to being looked at with fear and disdain that at this moment the way he was looking at you, his eyes wide and looking at you with such open warmth

And he kind of just takes your hand into his and pulls out a napkin and wipes at the sticky mess your ice cream cone left

“I like you too” you whisper, and the smile that Daehwi sends you is just blinding

After that night the two of you embarked on a very awkward relationship

Daehwi no longer had to run errands for you, but he still finds himself stopping by the shop to bring you snacks

And one time you decided to take him out on an actual date, granted it was just a walk around the park at night but it was a date

But during the date when Daehwi grabbed your hand you just flushed

Like your face was as red as a strawberry

It got even redder when Daehwi coo’d over your cuteness

And eventually one day, Daehwi dragged you out of the gym and took you to his family’s flower shop

“Here, I want to give you this”

You take the flower from Daehwi’s hand and admired its beauty

“What is it?”

“An amaryllis”

“What does it mean?”

“Worth beyond beauty, like you”

“W-what do you mean?”

Yeah, you were a blushy mess aGAIN

“Even though people say you’re scary and all that, you’re more than what you look like. You’re strong, and kind, and loyal, and that’s why I like you.”

Daehwi was shOOKTH when you marched up to him and planted a kiss

But it was cute bc it was a soft kiss, something innocent, the two of you fumbling, trying to figure out what to do with your hands

And when you pulled away, you kissed the tip of his nose

“I like you too”

And the two of you dating is just the cutest
