BOTD: Purple Martin
Photo: Doug Greenberg
"Graceful in flight, musical in its pre-dawn singing, this big swallow is one of our most popular birds. Almost all Purple Martins in the east now nest in birdhouses put up especially for them. Martin housing has a long history: some Native American tribes reportedly hung up hollow gourds around their villages to attract these birds. Purple Martins migrate to South America for the winter, but before leaving, they may gather to roost in groups of thousands in late summer."

Bird of the day! Mayhaps I lied when I said i wasn't going to make this a thing, I like birds too much.
Anyways. Purple Martins.
These pretty little guys are really neat. Did you know they are entirely dependent on man-made nests? The Cherokee people hung hollow gourd nests to attract them so the Martins would eat the pests that threatened their farms.
I also have some closeups of baby Purple Martins in the nests that I took a couple months ago. If you wanna see the wrinkly babies, they are in the readmore. :>
In Disney, they have a lot of Purple Martin nests all over the place. I got the opportunity to go on a mini tour with a conservationist. She walked us through the process of counting and recording the progress of the nests, and I got to take pictures of the chicks!

Holy cow! Can't believe another one of my designs suddenly became ink on skin, just recently! I drew up a set of designs for her back in college, and this was included in the ones she really liked - a stained glass Purple Martin. It's in memoriam of her late father, and I'm so glad it turned out vibrant and lovely!
