Cold House (Ben Mears x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: When the heat goes out, crazy ideas ensue
Tagging: @nobody7102
Ben adjusted his glasses before he flipped the page in the book he had been reading, his feet rubbing together to warm his socks. It had been a day.....God it had been a fucking day. He had spent the better part of the day with the others on a “wake and stake”, only to come home and find that Randy had wreaked utter havoc on the babysitter who had watched him during the day. There hadn’t even been any time for him to work on his book.
A loud, clattering *BANG!* startled him from his trancelike state. “Oh shit,” he muttered before whipping his glasses off and lazily placing them on the bed.
Ben skidded down the hall, only to be met by Randy and his funny little waddle-run, his Spiderman blanket pulled tight around his shoulders. “Oh shit! Oh shit! Oh shit!”
“Little man, we will discuss that bad language later,” Ben told him, the urgency in his voice evident as he headed down the stairs.
Ben practically jumped the last step when he heard annoyed shouts coming from the basement, the lights on and the stairwell bright and the voices loud and clear.
“Nolly you fucking knucklehead!!! What did you do?!”
“I didn’t do shit!!!”
“Well obviously you did something, otherwise this fuckin clunker would still be working!!”
Ben went down a few steps and saw Mike Ryerson, Jimmy Cody, Nolly Gardener and Parkins Gillespie all gathered around the old clunker of a furnace, trying to fix it. “Goddamn fuckin HVAC guys telling us this was better for the basement,” Parkins fumed. “Mike gimme a light, will ya?”
“You guys need help?”
“Yeah any idea where (y/n) is?” Parkins asked. “She knows this shit like the back of her hand.”
“I’ll go and get her.”
Ben traipsed into the kitchen to check the little dry-erase board with everyone’s hunting schedules. Ben’s eyes trailed down the list of names, looking for that of his wife, (Y/n). Royal Snow and Hank Peters were still out on a hunt along with Corey Bryant and Bonnie Sawyer and Matt Burke would be back within the next ten to fifteen minutes.
You came in through the door just a moment later, kicking off your boots before throwing your arms around Ben’s waist, kissing his cheeks and his dark blonde hair. “Holy shit,” you remarked.
“What?” Ben asked you.
“It’s friggin freezing in here.”
Ben hadn’t even noticed until it finally hit him, the cold running through him until goosebumps began to form on his arms and legs. Another sound reached his ears and the realization hit him like a kick in the teeth. “Shit,” he hissed under his breath.
Ben darted back up the stairs and grabbed his dark blue hoodie off his bed and throwing it on over his open grey button-down and white-beater, the squeaky little cries wrenching his heart as he hurried down the hall to the room at the end.
He entered the room where the cries became clear as day, the little fairy tale scenes painted on the walls while the wooden crib that had been pushed against one side of the room. Ben switched on the light in the windowless room and found yours and his son, Sean, wide awake with his tiny little fists beating the air.
And the room was even colder than the rest of the house.
“Ok buddy, ok,” Ben said as he lifted Baby Sean out of his crib and into his arms, cradling him against his chest. “Oh you’re so cold.”
Ben’s pencil thin lips brushed against the thin tufts of hair on Sean’s delicate little head as the baby shook and trembled, almost like Randy when he had first arrived at the house before being adopted by you and Ben. “Shhhhh, it’s ok Sean,” Ben murmured as his breath warmed his son’s head. “Daddy’s got you....Daddy will keep you warm.”
Ben sighed with annoyance when he realized that the baby wrap you often used was in the laundry. Sure, Sean’s little knit blanket that Eva Miller and Mabel Werts had made him would be ok, but there was no way in hell Ben was going to wreck it that way.
“Guess I’ll make do with what I’ve got,” he sighed.
He wrapped part of his hoodie around Sean before zipping him right up inside and grabbing his favorite little stuffie off the top shelf above the dresser. Awkward as it was, Ben didn’t give a single shit about what anybody thought. All that mattered to him was keeping Sean warm.
“C’mon bud,” he said. “Let’s go see Momma.”
*****************************
“Ok I think I’ve got it,” you said, straining as you tried to turn the wrench one more time. “Mike flip the switch.”
Mike Ryerson flipped the switch on the circuit breaker. “Alright, breaker is a go,” he replied.
You tried one last time but nothing. The furnace was totally conked out. “Alright, shut it off,” you told him. “We’ll get the fireplaces and the woodstoves going for the night.”
You headed back upstairs with the others and into the living room, loading the woodstove with as much wood as it could hold before lighting it. Every fireplace in the house was lit and soon it was as warm as could possibly be. You turned to the window to see the snow falling like heavy rain outside, when something else caught your attention.
“Ben?” you chuckled. “What are you doing?”
“Baby was freezing so I wrapped him up.”
Ben partially unzipped his hoodie when you saw Sean’s little head resting against Ben’s chest, sucking away on his blue and yellow pacifier and clutching something in his hand.
You laughed and melted all at once as you promptly took a picture of the scene before you and captioned it. The door opened and shut with Matt Burke trailing in from the snowstorm with Corey and Bonnie not far behind him.
“The hell happened while we were out?” Matt asked.
“Heat went out,” you told him.
“Is that why he’s got the baby in his sweatshirt?”
“Yep,” you said, showing Matt the picture that was captioned Daddy Bat and His Little Pup.
Sean lifted his little head, his stuffie still clutched in his hand. You were practically squealing on the inside when you realized which one it was, a little bat stuffie that had come with the book “Stellaluna”, a book Ben read to Randy nearly every night and had insisted on reading to Sean when he would grow older.
You and Ben made yourselves comfortable on the sofa in the living room while Parkins grabbed the kitchen phone off the wall and went down to the basement to have it out with an HVAC repairman. You and Ben scooted closer together, your foreheads touching and the warmth of the woodstove made its way into the blanket that covered you and Sean.
And you couldn’t think of a better way to spend a night like that.

Written by Bradley Jackson.
Directed by Bradley Jackson.
Distributed by Utopia. 105 minutes. Not Rated.
While for decades the popular opinion has been that the one most-unbreakable record in baseball is Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak, I’ve always disagreed. Yes, that is a spectacular achievement and in the 81 years since it happened only three players have come within 20 games of breaking the record. (Pete Rose had a 44-game streak in 1978, Paul Molitor had a 39-game streak in 1987 and Jimmy Rollins had a 38-game streak spanning the 2005 and 2006 seasons.)
Still, there has always been a record that I felt was even more unlikely to break than that one. It is simply this: Nolan Ryan pitched SEVEN no-hitters in his career. Think about that. Some of the greatest pitchers ever have never gotten one no-hitter. Sandy Koufax is the only other pitcher in history who has as many as four. Only four have had as many as three (Cy Young, Justin Verlander, Bob Feller and Larry Corcoran).
Add to that the fact that in modern baseball it is rare for a starting pitcher to be allowed to pitch a full game, the chances of anyone even getting a whiff of Ryan’s record are infinitesimal.
Not just because of this record, but I can say as a life-long baseball fan who has seen many, many superstars over the years, Nolan Ryan was the single most dominating pitcher that I have ever seen.
He’s not always thought of when people bring up the all-time greats, mostly because he tended to play for fairly bad teams, thus his win-loss records were a little spotty and he rarely made the playoffs. In fact, he only was on one World Series-champion team in a near-30-year career, the 1969 “Miracle” Mets, and at the time he was a youngster who was pitching out of the bullpen. Also his 100-mile-an-hour fast ball (in a time when that was exceedingly rare) could be a little wild.
However, think of this: beyond the record for no-hitters, he also holds the record for one-hitters (12, tied with Bob Feller), two-hitters (18) and three hitters (31). He also holds the career record for strikeouts (5,714), 300-strikeout seasons (6) and 200-strikeout seasons (15). That my friends, is domination.
Of course, he also has the record for most walks allowed, too. Go big or go home.
Facing Nolan is entertaining as a sports documentary because that is exactly what it is. Like its subject, it has no major bells and whistles, just an hour and 45 minutes mostly made up of some fantastic film of 27 years of pitching dominance.
Oh, sure, periodically the film will veer off into other subjects, mostly exploring Ryan’s obvious great love of his family, which appears to be the one thing on Earth that is even more important to the man than baseball is. It also touches on his outside work as a spokesman (there is a funny scene where two of Ryan’s granddaughters good-naturedly mock his old Advil ads), his love of animals, his ranch and Texas, and his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
But mostly, Facing Nolan puts you in the batter’s box as one of the greatest pitchers – if not THE greatest pitcher – in the game wove his magic. They literally got dozens of former major leaguers – both teammates and opponents – to discuss the sheer dominance that Ryan exhibited in his 27 seasons in the big leagues.
However, even more interesting is letting the big guy talk about himself. He may be a legend, but he’s also humble and funny about his place in the show. Unlike his former opponents, no baseball fan should hesitate about Facing Nolan.

guess who
The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band, formed in Winnipeg in 1965. Initially gaining recognition in Canada, the group found international success from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s with many hit singles, including "No Time", "American Woman", "Laughing", "These Eyes", "Undun" and "Share the Land". The band have continued to perform and record to the present day, and at various times have included many well-known musicians, including Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman (of Bachman–Turner Overdrive). Formed as a garage rock band, their musical style encompassed the pop rock and psychedelic rock genres.
The band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2002, Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Garry Peterson, Donnie McDougall and Bill Wallace received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement for The Guess Who's contribution to popular music in Canada.

The Guess Who
Artificial Paradise
@ 1973 US Pressing
*******
Artificial Paradise may be the most consistent album project by the post-Randy Bachman Guess Who, a solid offering of strong melodies, superb production, and focused artistic vision. It is also one of the group's more obscure offerings; a small fortune was obviously spent on the gratuitous and excessive packaging which says absolutely nothing and probably did much to sink this fine effort. Surprisingly, Burton Cummings only writes two titles on his own, contributing to four others by his current bandmates. Winter, Wallace, and McDougal actually get a freer songwriting reign on this ten-track release and it harkens back to the initial success of the Share the Land album, the first project where the new members explored, blending their musical skills. The beauty of Don McDougal's "Samantha's Living Room" or the "Iko Iko"-inspired "Follow Your Daughter Home," like everything else here, is clouded by the cover art, if it can even be called that. A typical Ed McMahon get-rich-quick sweepstakes advertisement takes up the inner sleeve, the glitzy color insert and the letter from "Marty Slick" (a dig at Grace Balin, one wonders, of labelmates Jefferson Starship?), which features the lyrics on the flip of the sweepstakes letter. The album cover is a big brown paper envelope with Guess Who/Winnipeg, Canada, as the return address. Beyond the packaging, though, the other dilemma is that this FM-oriented project holds onto the sensibilities of the band's AM hits. No matter how you slice it, they were not hip in America at this point in time. Decades later the music is very persuasive, but for 1972 how could the Guess Who compete with the Velvet Underground, the Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, or even Vanilla Fudge for counterculture cool? As with Bachman-Turner Overdrive, they couldn't, with the aura of the mainstream following the group as it did Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Despite the image problem with the band and the album cover, every track here excels and is first-rate; the lengthy jam that is Cummings' "Those Show Biz Shoes" is more fun than his similar song, "Your Nashville Sneakers," from the album Rockin'. "Orly" and "Follow Your Daughter Home" made it onto The Best of the Guess Who, Vol. 2, which itself was full of songs that, though good, failed to match the majesty of the hits on volume one. Artificial Paradise is the album in between Live at the Paramount and #10, a time when the band was attempting to cross over to the FM dial. As good an effort as it is, they should've stuck with their major strength: keeping their hand in the Top 40 game.

Bong Joon-ho's PARASITE Has a Badass Night at The Oscars and Makes History; Here's The Full List of Winners
Tumblr media
Director Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite was one of my favorite films of the year. I saw the movie multiple times in theaters. Every time someone would tell me they hadn’t seen it yet, I would drag them to the theater to watch it and they would leave walk out of the movie in awe.
Parasite had one hell of a great night at the Oscars as it took home four awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. This is the first South Korean film to be nominated, and the first time a film has won awards for Best Picture and Best International Film. I couldn’t be happier to see this film make Oscar history! All the awards it won were completely deserved.
While I don’t really care about watching the Oscars these days, and I’m not really a fan of this hostless thing they have going. But, I’m such a big fan of South Korean cinema, and it was really great to see such a brilliant film like Parasite be recognized the way it was.
Most every other win at the Oscars was pretty predictable, but I was honestly shocked by what Parasite accomplished! I did not see this coming, so it was a great surprise that made watching the Oscars worth it.
Here is the full list of nominees and winners. Looks them over and let us know what you thought about how everything turned out.

Randy Kraft part 20 The prosecution believed Kraft's former lover, Jeff Graves, may have assisted Kraft in several murders. Graves, who had lived with Kraft between 1971 and 1976 (when 16 known murders attributed to Kraft occurred) had been questioned in relation to the Crotwell abduction and murder in 1975, when he verified part of Kraft's statement to police. When questioned further about the incident following Kraft's arrest in 1983, Graves had informed investigators: "I'm really not going to pay for it, you know." Graves died of AIDS on July 27, 1987. At the time of his death, police had been preparing to question him further. In January 2000, journalist Dennis McDougal, the author of a 1991 book about Kraft entitled Angel of Darkness, published an article which recounted interviews with a small-time criminal named Bob Jackson, who reportedly confessed to murdering two hitchhikers with Kraft: one in Wyoming in 1975 and another in Colorado in 1976. Authorities in both Colorado and Wyoming were unable to corroborate these claims. Jackson also told McDougal that Kraft's scorecard included only his "more memorable" murders. In Jackson's opinion, Kraft's total body count stood closer to 100. McDougal reported these allegations to the police and provided tape recordings of the interviews. Detectives interrogated Jackson and eventually persuaded him to enter a mental institution. No murder charges were filed against him due to an absence of direct incriminating evidence. #destroytheday https://www.instagram.com/p/B71PicKh2LJ/?igshid=wi9bi2tdue3a

East Nashvillian singer-songwriter Lilly Hiatt draws as much from the fundamentals of 90s guitar rock as she does from Americana storytelling, and today she joins me to celebrate ‘No Code’ - the album that cemented the legacy of one of the all-time great rock bands, Pearl Jam.

Walden - A Unique Stop on the PCT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
About mile 145 along the PCT lies an inviting rest stop above the diffused community of Anza and just six miles from the Pines to Palms highway and its access to Paradise Valley Cafe. The two picnic tables and cooler are not what set this trail magic apart.  It is the little free library, the two standing figures of Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman, and the prompt in the visitor register. After all, 2017 is the bi-centennial of the publication of Thoreau’s Walden.
Trail Angel Mary, who tends this little oasis, shares the impact that Walden had on her when she read it as a teenager. “It changed her life,” she notes with the challenge to passing backpackers to share a book that changed their lives.
The resulting list is as diverse as the collection of us who walk the trail.  Here are some of the recent titles of influential books shared by hikers:
Demian by Herman Hesse Hard Times by Studs Terkel Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer Eat and Run by Scott Jurek Extreme Ownership by Willink and Babin Dune by Frank Herbert

Thus far, I’ve kept this intro short & sweet, focusing on getting to the results I know you care about. But for the last round, I wanted to take this space and thank the powers that be at Place to Be Nation. I’ve been listening to some of the OGs of the podcasts that eventually formed PTBN, like JT, Scott  and Chad for the better part of a decade and have heard them talk about wrestling for 100s, if not 1,000s of hours. You feel like you really get to know someone listening to them that much, even if you’ve never met. That’s not unlike sports radio show hosts, talk show hosts or DJ’s, but what was unique was the community that was built from these podcasts over the years.
Today, the work of so many people has led to an online wrestling/pop culture juggernaut featuring hot takes and shit takes and fire spit and bullshit displayed across the PTBN Wrestling, Pop Culture, the North-South Connection, Jenny Position and the website (apologies if I missed any feeds.) I’d list all the new podcasts with interesting gimmicks and great content, but I’m sure I’d forget somebody.
Through all that’s been going on the past few months, the pods, the discussion about these results or the next project (which you need to join if you haven’t already) has been a highlight in an otherwise dreary run. Maybe wrestling podcasts and online discussion won’t cure coronavirus or single-handedly lead to racial harmony, but it’s been a nice distraction from real life. Hopefully, you’ve all got a great support system of family and friends like I do, and enjoy all this free entertainment as a nice distraction. But if you need more, PTBN’s built a great community and I consider many of that group friends I’ve never met. And if you ever need a little more of a pick-me-up than typical wrestling/pop-culture buffoonery, feel free to reach out to that community or message me anytime.
OK, I’m off my soapbox and ready to reveal the 5 Greatest WWE Matches Ever, as voted on by you Place to Be Nation! I’ll add some commentary on the results afterwards.   If you missed any previous results, you can find those results here.

No. 1 Votes: 16
I found a few things interesting in the final results. Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart from WM 13 was the one and only match that appeared on all 36 ballots, which is amazing to me. It was also the only match with an average rating under 10. The winning Austin-Hart match nabbed 16 of 36 first place votes (44.44%), but no other match received more than 3 first-place votes (Savage-Steamboat from WM 3) and only 3 other matches received 2 first-place votes (Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker- HIAC at Badd Blood, Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage at WM 7 and Johnny Gargano vs. Andrade Cien Almas at NXT Takeover Philadelphia.) That leaves 11 matches receiving a single first-place vote. The oldest match to make the top 100 was Pat Patterson vs. Sgt. Slaughter in an Alley Fight on 4/21/81 and the most recent match to make the top 100 was Kofi Kingston vs. Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35.
Thanks for reading, participating, discussing and debating matches that made the list or just missed it. This project was a blast and the next one to determine the Greatest WCW Match Ever is off to a fantastic start.

The question is, why?

Commentary Politics Levin: Trump’s in the Clear, Clinton Lawyer Had Cohen Plead on Crimes That Don’t Exist By Randy DeSoto August 22, 2018 at 11:36am Fox News personality Mark Levin says special counsel Robert Mueller has “nothing” on President Donald Trump as a result of his former personal attorney Michael’s Cohen’s criminal plea agreement announced Tuesday. Cohen, 51, told a judge in United States District Court in New York City that he made payments to two women (adult film star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal) during the 2016 presidential race “at the direction of the candidate” referring to Trump. Cohen said the payments were “for the principal purpose of influencing the election.” “I want to help the law professors, the constitutional experts, the criminal defense lawyers, the former prosecutors and of course the professors and I want to help them understand what the law is,” Levin told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday night in response to the plea agreement. “The general counsel for the Clinton mob family, Lanny Davis, he had his client plead to two counts of criminality that don’t exist.” Levin — who served as chief of staff for Attorney General Edwin Meese during the Reagan administration — explained, “It is a plea bargain between a prosecutor and criminal. A criminal who doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life in prison. That is not precedent. That applies only to that specific case.” “Nobody cites plea bargains for precedent,” he continued. “That is number one. Number two, just because a prosecutor says that somebody violated a campaign law doesn’t make it so. He is not the judge. He is not the jury. We didn’t adjudicate anything. It never went to court.” Levin also stated the payments Cohen claims to have made on behalf of Trump to adult film star Daniels and indirectly to McDougal do not co https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/levin-trumps-clear-clinton-lawyer-cohen-plead-crimes-dont-exist/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune #corruptdemocrats #muellerinvestigation #russiahoax
