You know, I think Duncan and Rosalind were an arranged marriage.
She's not mentioned at all until the Battle of Hackham Heath where it says that she and Duncan got married. The previous book, mostly from Halt and Crowley's POV, had little reason to mention her, but still.
It would make sense for it to be necessary politically for Duncan to marry
Oswald was old and ill.
The people had turned against Duncan, thanks to Morgarath and Tiller, thinking that he was raiding and killing his own people.
Baron Morgarath was in the middle of a rebellion.
The scene at the tournament at Gorlan was not very conclusive for Duncan.
All this is making the monarchy look weak and unstable.
Also, Duncan was the only heir. He had no siblings or cousin who could take over if something happened to him. If he died - and as king, he would definitely be at risk in the war they all knew was coming - then the leadership of Araluen would spiral into chaos.
So Duncan needed to marry, so there is one more member of the very small royal family who could rule or at least rally the people and issue orders in his stead. And more importantly, he needed to marry, because he needed heirs.
So the scenario I'm picturing is any eligible young noblewomen, presumably daughters and sisters and so on of barons because that seems to be the only nobility in Araluen, being asked if any of them are interested in being courted by the king, and a bunch of them say yes, because who wouldn't want to be queen? And then Duncan meets whoever's interested, and luckily for him and Rosalind, they instantly hit it off.

Crowley: Every time I hear someone talking about updog, I’m torn between not wanting to fall for it and wanting to help them complete their joke.
Samdash: Okay, but what is updog?
Berrigan: Updog is a long sausage in a bun, often served with ketchup, mustard, onions, and/or relish.
Leander: No, that’s a hot dog. An updog is when a new version or patch of an application is released.
Berwick: No, that's an update. You’re thinking of the fourth largest city in Sweden.
Egon: Surely, that’s Uppsala, where’s updog is the giant spider in Harry Potter.
Pritchard: That’s Aragog. Updog is a symbol conventionally used for an arbitrarily small number in analysis proofs.
Farrel: You’re thinking of epsilon. Updog is an upward-moving air current.
Jurgen: No, that’s an updraft. An updog is the modern version of a henway.
Samdash: What’s a henway??
Halt: Oh, about five pounds.

Apologies to my followers, I’ve been in a silly goofy mood tonight. More of my usual content coming soon, I promise!
This is for my sister @peapodsinspace she convinced me to draw Morgie lol
Shout out to 11 year old me who had a huge crush on him for some reason (maybe because I imagined him looking like this)
RA artists feel free to use this design if you like it!

[Image ID: the meme of a car speeding onto a highway off ramp. The highway is labelled "calmly and rationally greeting the prince"; the off ramp is labelled "complaining that people in Araluen are unusually reluctant to throw themselves out of windows"; and the car is labelled "Halt meeting Duncan for the first time". /end]

#Ranger Gathering 2023 is coming this June!
What is this?
Our very own Ranger Gathering is an event running during June. Every day has its own prompt which you’re free to respond to in whichever way possible, relating to Ranger’s Apprentice, The Early Years, The Royal Ranger and/or Brotherband.
Check out last year’s stuff here!
How does it work?
The prompts are being released early for those who wish to begin chipping away at some of them before June comes around. This is mostly for those who want to do as many as possible and would like to avoid burnout or may be busy in June, but either way, no one is obliged to do every or any prompt. We’re just here to have fun!
This prompt challenge is not just about making fanart or fanfic, however. You can post about whatever has been inspired by the prompt. This could be playlists, moodboards, memes, analysis, quotes, literally anything you have your heart set on. You are also free to talk about your headcanons, AUs and OCs if you want to.
If you wish to take part, tag your post with #ranger gathering 2023 so we can all find it! You may also choose to post on other platforms, just know that it might not be as monitored as here.
Other than that, there’s no real rules. You can do as many or as little of the prompts as you want. You can post wips or polished works, short or long word counts, lil doodles :’)) and rendered art, one song or a playlist etc.
I would just urge you to know your limits and your workflow and work accordingly. Burnout is brutal and pumping stuff out is not gonna be worth it. In the case of you really want to finish your work, you can just do it later it’s 100% okay 💖🍵

A little headcanon that Halt called Will "son" mostly because he never lived to have Pritchard call him that.
He sort of knew that Pritchard saw him as someone more than just a kid he found and taught for a while. But Pritchard never called him "son".
Mostly because he was aware of Halt’s trauma and issues so he didn’t want to push him. If they had gotten more time together he would totally call Halt that... but he didn’t.
And Halt wasn’t going to do the same. And despite his trauma and issues he called Will "son" as soon as he himself realized that’s who Will is to him...

Halt is so sassy in Tournament at Gorlan and I’m here for it
“So unless our navigation is well off the mark, we wouldn’t have come close to it.
“Well, you were the one doing the navigating,” Halt said.

i haven't read the early years but I'm assuming when Duncan first met Halt he was like "wait, aren't you the prince-" and then Halt smacked his hand over his mouth so he doesn't get outed
