Happy birthday, @alto-tenure :)
Randall's lost his personal copy of Rutledge's Ancient Histories, and it's up to Hershel and Claire to help him find it!

man thinking about ranlayclaire has given me a great idea for an UF au:
Clive, whilst researching everything he can about the professor in preparation to play the role of his apprentice, stumbles upon an article about one Randall Ascot, archaeology enthusiast and man of abundant wealth. He decides that Randall is an excellent candidate to kidnap into the future; having him would be a useful bargaining chip should things go wrong with the professor, and if nothing else his riches and status could prove useful to Clive’s plans.
What Clive doesn’t count on is Claire. Conducting her own investigation of Future London’s research facility, she stumbles upon Randall, a man she’s never met but knows all too well. She recognises him from the faded photographs that hung in Hershel’s flat, and from tipsy, late night conversations about the past, regret, and lost friends (read: loves).
Randall, who’d been biding his time whilst he thought up an escape plan, is more than happy to go with her - he may not know her in return but anyone close with Hershel is someone he could trust (it also helps that she seems to have a keen eye for puzzles). With his sharp mind, Randall is already wise to the fact that this Future London is not all that it seems, so the duo form an unlikely partnership to solve its mysteries.
The two form a strong bond, sharing in troubled pasts, even joking about their situations as the ‘undead lovers of Hershel Layton’. Randall’s heart aches for Claire knowing that she won’t get the same second chance at life he’d been given. He promises to do everything he can to help settle things so that she can return to her time knowing that the future is safer.
When the professor and the rest of the gang eventually meet up with the duo they are of course surprised to find that Randall is also in Future London. They don’t reveal everything they know for risk of jeopardising the investigation, cautious that ‘Future Luke’ is still accompanying them. Randall is somewhat surprised when Claire introduces herself as ‘Celeste’ however. He understands her wanting to avoid putting Hershel through any more pain, but encourages her to be honest with him so that they can enjoy their remaining time together. When they find the time to meet with the professor alone they reveal everything to him, and the three begin working on a plan to defeat both Dimitri and Clive, and ensure the safety of both Londons.
For the rest of their adventure together the three grow even closer. For the professor it’s a chance to reconnect with his two favourite people. In the case of Randall it’s the most time they’ve spent together since the events at Monte D’Or, and with the complicated feelings from the Masked Gentleman incident given time to heal they fall seamlessly back into their old friendship. Claire is the perfect addition to their dynamic; Hershel is of course already head over heels for her, and she and Randall get on like they’d been friends for years. He supposes it makes sense given their many similarities, both bold and confident, intelligent and inquisitive, shared terrible sense of humour and no, Hershel Layton does not have a type. He’s not sure what to make of what the three of them have, especially given the strange circumstances, but he knows it puts a warmth in his chest he’d been lacking for a while. If only they had more time to see what could happen.
When Claire’s inevitable departure finally arrives it happens much the same, though this time an additional heart is broken in the fallout. Randall, much like Hershel, had grown to love Claire deeply and had cherished the time they’d all spent together, however brief and unusual it was. She kisses each of them in turn before joining their hands, happy that the future is secure and that her boys will have each other. As she walks away, Hershel cradles his top hat to his chest with a pained smile and tears in his eyes. Randall simply stays there beside him, clinging tightly to the hand still entwined with his.

33 for ranlayclaire...?
33. One accidentally runs into the other(s) while in a police holding cell
(no fall AU; characters are ~23, pre-relationship but the feelings are established)
Hershel sighs, gaze flicking upwards to the backseat, where Claire and Randall are both sitting. Randall has his arms crossed, facing away from Claire. Claire is studiously watching the cityscape pass in a way that betrays the fact that she's avoiding looking at him. Neither of them wanted the passenger seat. For good reason, he supposes.
"Are either of you going to tell me why I had to...bail you out?" he asks.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Randall answers, bringing his knees up to his chest petulantly.
"I don't know what he did, but I was perfectly within my rights," Claire says. Her nose is bruised. "We were there separately."
Of course they both had him as their primary contact. Who else would they call? Angela chose to transfer universities to Cambridge, and last Hershel knew, Henry did leave the employment of the Ascot household, but hasn't settled anywhere in particular yet. Or maybe he just doesn't want to talk to anyone from Stansbury. He'd be well within his rights. And Claire's...Claire has a lot of friends, but he doesn't think many of them are close enough to call to get her from the detention centre without question.
So, again, who else would they have called? And that's how they've ended up here, both in the backseat next to each other.
"Then one at a time," Hershel replies. "And the truth, please. I don't think I should have to force my best friends to tell me what exactly is going on, but I wouldn't put it past Randall to lie."
"Hey!" Randall protests. "I'm not a liar. Okay, so here's what happened--"
Randall hadn't intended to get into trouble. He really hadn't! It was supposed to be a routine grocery trip. It's not his fault that he got distracted, yeah?
("It probably is," Claire points out from next to him, still staring out the window instead of looking at Hershel or at him.
"Let me finish," Randall says.
"We'll keep the interruptions to a minimum.")
The reason he got distracted was pretty simple, right? While he was walking down the street, he noticed that there was a lamp. Just left out there on the grass between the sidewalk and the front entrance. He sure could use a new desk lamp.
("You do not need a new desk lamp," Hershel chides, looking up into the mirror to glare at Randall. This is why he decided to sit behind Hershel -- it's harder for Hershel to make eye contact with him through the mirror. Claire's the unlucky one here. She can easily get the brunt of his disappointment.
Randall shrugs. "Who am I to pass up an opportunity like that?"
Claire looks at Hershel. "I thought you said to keep the interruptions to a minimum? Keep going, Randall.")
Now, why was there a desk lamp there? That didn't matter! All that mattered was that it was free. After all, why else would it be out there? Why would someone leave a desk lamp out if they didn't intend for it to be taken?
("I have a bad feeling about this," Hershel mutters to himself.)
He had, of course, taken the desk lamp. And as he was walking home, he got cornered by a constable. The constable had asked him about the lamp, and he said he had picked it up off the ground, because it was being offered for free.
And then the officer told him the lamp had been reported as stolen from an antique store, and Randall had been arrested.
"Wait, that's it?" Claire asks.
"That's it. All a big misunderstanding." He leans back a little and crosses his arms. "I didn't do anything wrong! Come on, you both should know me better than that."
"We have done...quite a bit of trespassing as teenagers," Hershel says. "I would not be surprised if you got arrested for something foolish. And it was rather foolish that you just took it when you had no need for such a thing, but it is also not your fault. I understand. Claire?"
"Well," she says, wringing her hands, "I'm not sure you'll have quite the same reaction to my story..."
She was on her way out of the office after meeting with the other physics TAs and their professor, heading home after a long day of work. She had decided to take a shortcut on her way home that she's been contemplating for a long time since she's been making the commute -- instead of taking the bus, she can take a back alley instead and avoid much of the traffic and the fare for the bus.
("That doesn't sound like a great idea," Randall says.
"No interruptions," Hershel replies from the front seat.)
Her story is a lot simpler, when she gets down to it. She had heard a mugging happening nearby, and she interfered to stop it. The mugger had been only slightly taller than her, and the victim a teenager that had run away afterwards, so when the police found them, she had been arrested for assault as well, and the addendum that she had been defending someone else had gotten lost due to the fact that the police had chosen to believe the mugger over her.
"That..." He trails off.
"That blows," Randall says. "Is that what you wanted to say, Hershel?"
"No," he answers. "You're all staying with me tonight, though. I wouldn't want either of you to get into trouble. And yes, Claire, I already let your roommate know."
"I...appreciate it," she says. "Thank you."
"You already live with me, Hershel," Randall says. "We'd be going back to our flat regardless."
"Yes, well--" He freezes. "I just didn't want to drop Claire off so late in the evening. It would disturb her roommate."
"And perhaps tomorrow the three of us can go antiquing, since Randall wants a new desk lamp so badly," Claire says with a smile.
"Let's worry about that in the morning," Hershel declares.
He parks the car as they arrive in the block's parking lot.
"Come on," Randall says. "Let's go home."
Home. With both of them there, it might actually feel like it.

Actually what if Claire had been part of the stansbury gang and ended up in monte d’Or with angela and Henry
Hmm I think she’d still be connected with physics but a part of me thinks she’d dabble in geography to help Henry out at some point making sure it’s safe to build on certain land
Her and angela have tea every Thursday
She also sometimes performs in a small club with her guitar (I headcannon she can play a few instruments)
But yeah Stansbury gang Claire!
And I might even add some ranlayclaire if I write this hmm

For the fandom ask, who’s your all time OTP or OT3?
Yaaaaay an ask! and since it's coming from you, I'm gonna answer for the Layton fandom x)
OTP, Layclaire! Just- the drama, the angst aaaaargh
Absolute favorite!
And I admit I'm not much of a poly shipper, but if I had to answer I'd say Ranlayclaire? Maybe x)
Thanks for the ask!

engineer layton au: the part where I decide to be angsty but also self-indulgent
the self-indulgence is that ranlayclaire is a thing pre-explosion. the angst is that claire still dies
randall and layton have a massive argument after claire's death that ends with them breaking up.
layton does his investigation and ends up in the coma
randall went back to stansbury to tell the layton parents but ended up sticking around for the archeology stuff
targent is hovering around said wall, just like in canon, but without the mask they can't figure it out
des is still hovering around and visits his brother in the hospital a couple times while he's in the coma
professor of engineering layton! he still enjoys solving mysteries and puzzles when not teaching classes or working on a project
luke contacts clark's old archeologist friend randall for help since he knows he needs some help with what's going on and there has been more activity with the golden garden thing
that leads randall to reach out to layton, which kicks off the events of the prequels. it's the getting back together trip!
descole, seeing layton with randall in misthallery: for fuck's sake ascot you couldn't have left him out of this???

Hey there! 6 and 16 for those writer asks?
6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?
Oh, sure! If I keep rereading something, chances are I'll probably bookmark it, too. And scrolling through my bookmarks now for a few examples...
you and me (and you too) by theriveroflight (ranlayclaire, G) A classic! Ranlayclaire is in short supply, so you have to appreciate what you can get, and this fic is brilliant! Makes you wish there were more fics for these three...
absolute lithops effect by windupclock (Flora-centric, G) I spend a lot of time writing Flora character studies, and this is often the one I go back to for inspiration. It's such a sweet take on Flora's life post-St. Mystere.
Mall Santa Paul by TheMockingJ3 (Don Paolo-centric, G) I'm not usually one for out-of-season holiday stuff, but fics are the exception, and I love coming back to this Christmas fic! It's silly and fun, and wholesome in the end!
make it work; make it easy by cROAissant (Asoryuu, G) I come back to this one whenever I'm in an Asoryuu or DGS mood because it's just a lot of silly fun! (An AU with Ryuunosuke as a stress-baking neighbour) Susato is top tier in it too, haha
One Thought at a Time by StravvberryMilk (Hunter and Gus-centric, G) This one was published during season 2 of TOH, just after Labyrinth Runners, and of course ran the risk of becoming outdated, but it held up extremely well! It's a fic about comfort in the face of this haunting sense of anxiety about what's to come, and is absolutely still what I could consider a missing scene from between episodes, and a delight to reread.
16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?
Usually whilst I'm staring at the title box! Sometimes I'll be struck with inspiration whilst writing and jot a title down early, but... Not usually. I think I may have had the idea for the title for the Emmy character study (that I wrote back in May) early, but otherwise, it's all just when I cannot put it off and have to come up with something!
