when he looks at mary that’s easy to believe, but now - the chaos of the past few weeks, of barely escaping guarma and seeing her old man again, who still looks at him with the same disdain in his eyes from all those years ago despite how he’s withered away - there’s no denying it. he can’t keep idealizing her, can’t keep the polished image of her on a pedestal as some kind of fantasy he can take out whenever shit goes awry. not anymore.

𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬. Fingers curled the edges of the paper, creating a white curl that pressed itself against the unpigmented map. Charcoal pencil rested against his index finger, black stains covered his hands and stained the paper outside of the drawn circle around Tall Trees.
❝ Don’t get your knickers in a twist, I know what I’m doing. ❞ His idle hand waved away her concern. Of course Sean knew what he was doing. He wasn’t just some dumb kid who took everything that fell in his lap. He looked into the stagecoach, traced the routes, and he made damn sure there wasn’t going to be any guards that they couldn’t handle. The man who gave him the lead hasn’t let him down yet, and every lead he took on from him ended in a boatload of money to bring back to camp.
Sean even did more research on this carriage than he would on any other stagecoach. A price this stage had, there wasn’t going to be anything like it in weeks, he reckoned.

The arena is packed, the crowd wild, standing and waving, jeering and cheering - an overwhelmingly loud cacophony that is almost deafening in its fervour.
Samuel’s hands grip hard as he rides the bull, a giant beast that violently bucks and brawls as it tries to throw him from its back as the crowd hoot and whoop their encouragement. Regardless, Samuel maintains his hold, shifting in time with the animal, swaying to and fro and hunkering down when it looks like it’s about to kick.
Glancing around the arena, he can see the worried expressions on the rodeo clowns faces who clearly think he’s about to be thrown. As he leans left, nearly slipping, he catches sight of the bull pen; it contains only one other bull, one even bigger than the one he’s riding, one that looks surprising like...August Wilder? When it talks to him, in a voice that sounds a lot like Gus’, admittedly Samuel can’t help but burst out laughing. The sound of his own laughter seems to continue even when he’s ceased laughing, a unsettling echo that strangely changes in pitch and tone as the bright colours of the rodeo arena start to bleed into one another, melting away to be replaced with the mutes hues of the desert at dusk.
Looking down, Samuel finds he is wearing nothing but his Long Johns and is sat atop a large, smooth bolder, one he was presumably riding like a bull only a few short moments ago. Glancing to the side, he can see his clothes drifting off into the distance, clearly thrown one by one on his journey here. How did he get here?
Turning, he sees August standing with a smile on his face, a smile unlike any he’s ever seen on the Blacksmith’s face before and it’s only then that he’s finally able to process the man’s words.
“Guess so.” He admits with a sheepish blush. Finally stepping up off the rock, walking practically bow-legged as he stumbles off to retrieve his clothes.

I wanted to make a starter post about the origins of the fic and my notes on how it has been to write it so far. It might be very long and boring for other people to read but I find it useful
THE ORIGINS
Honestly and probably unsurprisingly it started as an author insert thing for me. During COVID lockdown I played Red Dead Redemption 2 like it was my full time job and felt very attached to the characters. Being bored and lonely I found myself imagining my interactions with them and where I would fit if I was part of the gang.
It's still fair to say that it's an author insert - Lily and I are incredibly similar, we share many personality traits and certain specific details about her life and backstory are true for us both. She has evolved from just being “me” though, and I’m more comfortable with her as a separate entity. She makes decisions and mistakes that I (hopefully) wouldn't make (and probably vice versa).
I wrote random scenes as they occurred to me, never with any intention of posting anything, and then had the idea of how to structure it as a whole piece and where I wanted Lily to end up. I ended up writing the Guarma and Beaver Hollow sections before I’d fleshed out anything else, but it was useful for me to be able to go back and see how my initial writing to fit into those parts.
Writing these chapters also made me realise how Dutch and Lily’s dynamic is just as important as Lily and Arthur’s, although I had no idea when I started that I was going to end up loving writing for Dutch so much. That’s where I started to get excited about what I was writing and thought about sharing it online.
THE ACTUAL WRITING
I haven't written anything in an extremely long time (since I was in school). Worse than not writing though is that I haven’t even been reading, even though I devoured books when I was a kid. I've struggled a lot with depression and the motivation to do either has not been there. I’m really glad to be writing again, but I’m struggling sometimes.
As I started writing this and becoming more excited about my ideas I started to make notes about what I was trying to achieve and I found it hugely helpful. I started seeing big improvements which was a huge motivator and getting excited about imagery and metaphors that made sense on many different levels.
I thought it might be helpful for me to share some of these thoughts here, so if there are any readers of this fic they get that insight (I get a kick out of that stuff from other writers), and even if I don’t have any readers I may at least continue to improve.
Maybe it’s weird to publish a fic knowing there are improvements that I want to make, but I guess I don’t really feel like I have the skill to fix it all. So here are some things that I’m not currently 100% happy with:
My grammar and punctuation needs work. Short sentences. Absurdly long sentences with 50,000 commas, I can’t get the hang of semi-colons, why do I break up chunks of writing with - and then - and then another - is this really distractingly bad?
I often feel like the writing slips into a chaotic, anxious internal monologue, which wasn’t a conscious decision. but I feel like it suits Lily because that’s how she thinks. I don’t know if this really makes sense to do or if it’s super annoying.
I work in theatre and I think in scenes and dialogue. I really made a conscious effort to be more descriptive and to find other ways of saying what I want to say but it’s so hard. I think I need to read more.
I think partly related to this is that I struggle between scene changes and find myself writing a lot of stuff that serves no point, it’s just me trying to figure out how to get to the next part
I feel like sometimes the writing can be super literal and just exists to push on a story without much flair, and then I dip into a metaphor.
It makes sense to me to write from Lily’s point of view most of the time, but sometimes I dip into other people’s points of view and it’s very inconsistent. I don’t know if this works as a reader, but it’s convenient as a writer. As I was editing I tried to pull more of Arthur’s thoughts out but it still feels very imbalanced.
Sometimes I feel like I need to write what happens in an in-game mission, if Lily is present, or if Arthur’s perspective feels important. In some ways it has been a useful exercise (what is better/worse about the way I re-write those scenes to the way that i write other elements). I really struggle doing this sometimes and it’s a lot less enjoyable trying to convey an existing scene in my own way.
I wish I was better at writing Sadie!
I want to state the obvious all the time. It’s very hard for me to let the reader connect the dots or read between the lines. I want to make sure that they know exactly what I’m trying to do.
I cannot edit. I need to learn to edit.
