"You're bleeding."
It's an obvious statement, one Tanguish feels a little foolish for. Of course Helsknight is bleeding. He just won his match. It's amazing how strong these Colosseum fighters are, how much damage they can do to each other, especially when they're matched up well. And Helsknight is the Champion of Hels -- if for no other reason than the popularity with the crowd, every one of his matches is a good match. It has to be. Anything less and it's not the Champion, is it?
Helsknight looks dazed. It's a familiar look. After a particularly rough fight. It's like the knight can't believe the fight has stopped. It takes a few minutes for his heart to stop sprinting. So he goes through the gate, dragging his sword up to the nearby wall and plants himself on the bench, and he stares into the middle distance, breathing, bleeding, waiting. It's a familiar look. Today he's spattered up to the elbow in blood, and it runs between the links of his chain mail in thin calligraphy lines. It gathers in the bends in his pauldrons, makes more stark the dent in his chest plate. If it's not cleaned and polished off in the next few hours, it'll settle in those places and poison them with rust, and the next time Helsknight fights, he'll be more vulnerable. Blood is such an insidious thing sometimes, the way it weakens when it flows.
Tanguish moves to the knight, a bowl of water in one hand, a healing kit in the other. He takes the knight apart like he's a machine, slipping delicate fingers across the gauntleted hand, undoing straps and buckles to show the bruised knuckles beneath the armor. Metal and leather can only do so much. Bodies break surprisingly well, when they're testing their limits. Helsknight sighs as Tanguish massages his hand, searching for broken bones. The knight is almost feverishly hot to his frost-laden touch, and Tanguish watches the swollen skin start to pale as the cold soothes it.
"You don't have to do that," Helsknight says, his voice a thin and distant rasp, still lost somewhere in the adrenaline crash. "Just... give me a minute to rest."
"I am," Tanguish answers him gently and keeps working, unclasping the buckles on the chest plate and pulling it free. He lays it gently on the ground, and takes pride in how Helsknight breathes easier. The knight rests, eyes fluttering half-closed and sighing as Tanguish works. Cold hands trace over blooded armor and fevered skin, setting right the wrongs. He dabs at cuts, eliciting hisses of pain that he immediately soothes. He puts ice to bruises, and water to sweat and blood, and Helsknight revives, slowly. His breathing lengthens and deepens. The flushed skin cools. The muscles relax.
"How did the fight go?" Tanguish asks when Helsknight's eyes flutter open again.
"I won."
"You can say it better than that."
Helsknight smirks, his vitality slowly returning. He sniffs and runs a tongue across his teeth, making room for the words where there once was blood. Tanguish doesn't know how the knight stands the taste, but then again, Helsknight has been in a great many fights. Maybe blood loses its flavor after so long.
"You watched the fight."
"And so did they," Tanguish looks up to the ceiling, where the cheering of the crowd still sometimes surges and roars. "But none of us can tell the story the way you can."
"Blood is memory without language."
"See, that's what I mean."
"Weaving bard's tales already?" someone asks, another fighter sitting on another bench, cleaning a bloodied sword. "You haven't even rested yet."
"He's resting now," Tanguish says, running the damp cloth over a gash in Helsknight's arm. That one will need stitches, or a health potion. Helsknight's hand shakes when Tanguish cleans it, and there's color in the cut that means its too deep, gruesomeness he doesn't want to put names to, for fear it'll make him sick. Helsknight spares the wound a glance before pointedly fixing his gaze away from it. It always strikes Tanguish as funny, that the knight can't look at his own wounds. He can inflict them, he can tend them in others, he can ignore them, but admitting he's wounded is a mountain he struggles to climb.
Helsknight closes his eyes again, but the eyelids keep moving, like a man dreaming or searching for words.
"Where do you want me to start?"
"When they opened the cage."
Helsknight nods. He sits in silence for a long moment. In a few days, when all wounds are healed and all aches soothed, Helsknight will write in a little book he keeps under his pillow:
Blood is memory without language The wounded creature screams And though the sand drinks life away We lay linked by crimson streams
Brothers you and I, creature Kin on parched and bitter sand Though mine is spilt for glory Yours is spilt by crowd's command
What place is this, what hell endured That brings us to this yield But happenstance and hubris And hungry crowd's bone field
What beast are you to me, creature What creature I to you You are a footnote in a story And I the death of you
Again repeat what we both know Whilst life, for now, entwine That we are linked in blood my love Shared memory divine

Life-Saving Minecraft Tips that I almost never see anyone else using (am I just bad at the game...?)
Always carry a bucket of water in your hotbar, especially if you're going caving.
Keep a Warped Fungus handy when traversing the Nether. Hoglins can't attack you if you're standing near a Warped Fungus. I also like to keep a Flower Pot on me just in case I run into a pack of Hoglins somewhere I can't place the fungus directly on the ground.
Use potions. Idk if it's just the kinds of lets-players I watch or what, but I can't believe how many people are sleeping on these.
Night Vision for the Deep Dark (Nether Wart + Golden Carrot). Keeps you from waking up the Warden with a single careless torch placement, and also negates the Darkness effect if you activate a Shrieker.
Invisibility Potions for death runs back to your items (Night Vision Potion + Fermented Spider Eye)
Slow Falling for the Ender Dragon fight (Nether Wart + Phantom Membrane)
Fire Resistance negates like 85% of the danger in the Nether (Nether Wart + Magma Cream)
Adding some Redstone Dust to any potion will increase the duration of its effects to 8 minutes. Three max-duration potions will keep you covered for a little more than one full day-night cycle.
Wool blocks are soundproof (but carpets aren't 😕). Completely covering a Skulk Sensor or Chest with wool blocks before interacting with it will prevent chain reactions from other Sensors.
Set up a safe base with a bed at world spawn (usually around coordinates 0, 0) so that you don't have to sprint buck naked through the night if you lose your respawn point.
I actually like to put my main base near world spawn because I easily get disoriented when trying to navigate by coordinates alone, and it's much simpler for me to just follow a Compass back home (I think that's an exclusive-to-Niki problem tho. I've never heard of anyone else wanting to do this 😅).
This is only tangentially related, but I can remember a time when Zombies dropped Feathers instead of Rotten Flesh. You'd think I wouldn't die so often, having played this game for almost 13 years...

...and I'll tell her so she knows That I'm broke, but I'm real rich in my head That I broke a bone that never healed in my hand So when I hold her close I might loosen my grip, but I won't ever let her go I won't ever let her go.
this is mostly what i was really wanting with that concept art i posted forever ago. that's why i drew the bones with pens lol.
the chorus of Forever is so tanguish and helsknight that it hurts meeee!!! like maybe the song itself has too much of its own story to be them but specifically this part of the chorus goes crazy. and also "I won't be alone for the rest of my life."
if you give me blorbos i WILL relate them to a noah kahan song it's just a matter of time
(also this means u can stop rb'ing the concept art bc it sucks!!!!!)

IMPORTANT: please suggest quotes for those I don't have an idea for! It'd be very helpful, especially because I don't have all the VODs! I need quotes for: Rae, Caspian, Momboo, Jamie, Easton, Centross, Ven, Athena, Wolf, Arisanna, Haley, and Icarus. Open for suggestions on Ocie, Ulysses, and Aax!
I think when Fable ends I'm going to work on a series of pieces- love letters to the entire story and how much it's impacted me. I've got a few planned but I need Fable to end before I start it, because whatever happens from now to the finale- including the finale itself, is going to be so important in relation to these! A few of the already like- dead dead characters I can work with though
I want to include text within them, so;
Rae - Rae's is going to be one of the most fun. There is so much I can do- so many directions. The finale will probably solidify which I do! A few things are for certain though; 1) aspects of the skulk. Most likely will be vines crawling up the background! 2) Aspects of the three shards- Alerion, Enderian, and Perix. Probably will be conveyed through color! Enderian will have a more specific nod as she's more present within Rae himself! Some sort of crown would sort of be my idea. 3) Stars. Of some sort, I want there to be stars. 4) A crown. Will probably be end-esque but we shall see!
Aax -There are a few things I know I want for Aax as well! 1) Four. Such an iconic thing for Aax- it's gotta be there. 2) Glowberries (because why not) 3) A trident and an axe. Aax's words will probably be something like "by design", or something about protecting Rae and Caspian!
(more below cut. It's a lot of words-)
Caspian - The problem with Caspian is I don't know an absolute ton about him! I do know a decent bit though, I'd say. A few things I want to include: 1) a quill. what's a writer without his tools? 2) A nod to momboo in some way. I'll figure that out. 3) Redstone/gadgetry of some kind. 4) something Atlas related, if not Atlas herself.
Momboo - I want a lot of nature themed elements, of course, but also a splash of color. The glitching. May do a half and half but probably not- it'll probably be worked in there somehow tho! I want nods to Jamie and Easton as well. Not sure on the quote yet!
Jamie - I hold Jamie in my little hands. I want nods to Athena, Momboo, and Easton in there, as well as Eeji, whatever the sheep is named, the camel and Solaris! I might have them as tiny creatures within the art piece itself! There will be an increase of nature themed elements as well, a nod to how they inherited that from Momboo! (no quote so far)
Easton: I don't know too much about Easton as well, sadly! I want to include lightning, skulk, nods to their mother and sibling, and the border will probably be a heart monitor type line (well within the border), a nod to how they see the world! (no quote so far)
Athena: I of course want Nether elements, but also a nod to Jamie, nature/flowers, and Cheshire! Cheshire might be included, possibly at the bottom or draped across Athena's neck. Whatever I can get to work! I kind of want to draw her in his fancy nether outfit, because I feel like it fits? (no quote so far)
Ven: The little traitor man! (/aff) I want nods to Fengari and some sort of writing detail! I don't know a ton about Ven, but I may include some nods to Fable (twisting yellow claws, etc!) (no quote so far!)
Ocie: I have the most idea for Ocie- she's the one that started my brain a'going. One of the strongest themes in Ocie's character is grief. It's lost so many people- and now another one, Len. Features I want to include are: 1) a nod to Momboo, 2) Oscar, 3) I kind of want her eyes to glow, 4) a heart of the sea, 5) tears. The words on her piece will probably be "Another empty grave." (or "I don't want to dig another grave.", or "It takes every piece away"!)
Centross: Wouldn't be a Centross piece without a nod to the end! A note that this piece will be of Violet! I want to display each character sort of in their "final form", whatever that may be. I want stars, the reaver, and a nod to the farming. His quote will probably be something cryptic about keeping the balance!
Wolf/Fenris: Fenris's is another that is going to be really fun! I may add a phantom mask over his face, as well as the moon above or behind his head. I want him in a fancy outfit- probably the one Malitae gave him, or the Festival of light one. There will be stars for Rae, and maybe wheat for Centross? Not sure of a quote yet!
Arisanna: Gotta have allays. But also pillager references! The border will probs have arrows within it! She'll also have some sort of book reference, whether that be the background or her holding one!
Icarus: Wings and potions and wack. Icarus's will be colorful, feathery, and otherwise I'm not entirely sure! I want a crown, so icarus's matches the rest of prince trio's. I also want to highlight their eyes! Otherwise, I think help from y'all and also the finale will help. Quote might be "Oh, we're doing this again?" but I am very very very open to suggestions
Haley: Haley's is going to be eerie- probably a reference to how she died, but also I want something puppet-y about her! not sure what else, and for the quote all i got is "this wasn't how it was supposed to go"
Ulysses: formerly evil fish man WOOO! Gotta have references to medical stuff, possibly have Victor in there, telchin stuff, and alcohol. Ulysses is trying to make amends, to fix the wrongs, to improve. I don't know how I can convey the layers of that well, like I can with Ocie's grief. Honestly, the quote might be the best way to do that! ("I'm sorry", or "I didn't mean for this to happen", maybe?)
I won't be doing one for Galahad, Will, or Chaos! Galahad and Will because I don't know their characters that well, and I feel like it'd be out of place now. Chaos for infer-able reasons.
Addie may be added if I have time, motivation, and if we see addie again before the end!

I haven't had time to incorporate the stuff from the snapshot yet , but figured now would be a good time to post my take on the minecraft lore! I've always favored a more tragic story, so here we go
There once was a race of builders, of people, of scientists and explorers and mages. They kept up relations with the Piglins of the nether and built wonderous temples of stone to worship their gods. After all, they had all the time in the world
And suddenly the didn't.
The magic that powered their tools wasn't as strong, crops didn't grow as fast. The monsters that had always been around started showing up in greater numbers. The rumors came next. A disaster of epic proportions, the kind that causes extinction events. Disease and destruction. The civilization didn't panic though, not yet. They sent out sailors first, outfitted with some basic rations, paper to record their journeys, and a bit of treasure in case of emergencies. Those ships never made it far as seas were rougher than they should have been. The coastal settlements started noticing the water rising more and more each day. They took everything of value and ran. Some managed to make it to other villages, but most didn't. When word reached the inland settlements they started to panic just a bit. The world they had come to rely on was no longer friendly.
They tried settling in the nether next, building great fortresses in an attempt to withstand the hostility and heat. But the disaster affected that realm too. It took just one animal to bring a disease through and it ran through the realm in no time. Members of the once great civilization left in a hurry. They built portals wherever they could to return to their home realm, chased by the Piglins who they had brought disaster upon. They were running out of ideas at this point. Tensions were high, and time was rapidly counting down. Soon two factions arose. One would go to The End, the mythical dimension that only the bravest of warriors went. They would bring seeds, tools, armor. Enough to make a last stand and hold out, and maybe one day return to the sunlight
But it wasn't enough. There was no way to grow their seeds, and the denizens of the land did not want them there. No one knows how long they lasted, but they never saw sunlight again.
The other group knew they were only delaying the inevitable and so they prepared. They let loose their animals to give them a chance to survive. They packed up their music and books and everything left behind. The fighters and what remained of the sailors had already left so they took the best and brightest; the redstoners and builders. They decided to dig Deep underground, farther than they had ever gone, to where silence was key. The skulk wasn't as bad in those days, you see. The monster it summoned when threatened was passive enough as long as you didn't harm its charges. And appeasing it often made it leave faster. So they did what they did best, and built a fortress of stone hidden far away from the surface. They used every technique they could to blend in, hoping the disaster would pass them by. Hoping their neighbors would tolerate them. They used their precious wool to dampen the sound of walking, they built cold rooms to preserve as much food as possible. They built a great shrine to the protector, the Warden. Over time it accepted them, and protected them too. But even that wasn't enough. Disease and destruction inevitably found them. And as they fell, their skulk neighbors fed on what was left, as there was no sense in letting anything go to waste.
Time passed, long enough for the very land to shift. Long enough for an entirely new intelligent species to evolve. The villagers are doing remarkably well for a sentient species living amongst the ruins of a former world. In time, they may become masters of building and magic as well. But for now they are simple craftsmen and farmers, unaware of the true damage haunting their world. The Piglins, only just beginning to recover, their ancestral homes fallen to ruin as they struggled to survive. The End, full of buildings with no Builders to be seen. And the Deep, adamant to protect what remains of their friends from anything seeking to harm them. By any means necessary.

Retirement Home SMP or, the Book and Quill 1.19 June 2022 - Jan 2023 (6 months)
From left to right, then top to bottom if people overlap: Dice (@dontrollthedicesideblog), Squish (@squish--squash), Schleep, Alias, Faded, Myriad (me), Light (@lightns881), Ryan, Cyngus, Lumo, Pack Yak. Missing is ZodiacLight who joined a bit later.
I'm almost a year late putting this out. I drew everyone in like 2 days but hated coloring so I never finished :(
The new server name was a reference to how we were all once a bunch of mcyt writers and now we’ve “retired” and dispersed into other fandoms. The spawn area contained two villages: one in a plains biome, and the other in a mangrove swamp. The server was mostly split into two factions depending on where players resided: the Grove and the Plains. There was also a third “faction” of wanderers who belong to neither village.
This season contained the original Book and Quill members, and also some of my irl friends I invited. Yes, it was briefly a social nightmare but I survived.
Below the cut: character notes about the server members, in the order of the list above
Dice: The Warden Affiliation: Wanderer
the first thing they did on the server: stab fish and dig a hole
an End Busting god???? went on their own and didn’t die.
built a PRISON. made people very concerned about who it was supposed to hold
Squish: Guardian of the Grove Affiliation: The Grove (leader)
has a fox form. used to have wings but lost them when The Grove briefly fell into disarray
local prankster. Hid 18 skulk shriekers around the common areas after the ancient city raid, then moved them to new locations when found. Gave the entire of server war flashbacks
escalated into a prank war with Schleep
built giant gunpowder farm over an ocean
goat horns! got goat horns for everyone so that the two villages could call to each other!
Schleep: The Anarchist Affiliation: Wanderer (duh)
anarchist, has been convicted of All the Crimes
residential minecraft sweat, carried the server
made a powerpoint presentation on how to raid an ancient city
the techno to Myriad’s philza
filled the Grove with chicken bombs and bells after Squish left one too many shriekers around the Plains
Alias: Wanderer of the Wastes Affiliation: Wanderer ("leader")
skin suggests a relation to the warden glow squid
accidently jump scared a bunch of people (namely, me) during the ancient city raid because their skin looked so much like the warden
Faded Didn't make it onto the server but had a cool skin design
Myriad Affiliation: Plains
on their retirement arc
founder of the Plains village but not in any positions of power. trying to keep a low profile
the philza to Schleep’s techno
kept getting rickrolled by Light with the lyrics of Mask
god complex. Light and Schleep built a giant statue of them while they were offline
Light: The Executioner Affiliation: Plains and the Grove
local redstoner. built most of the farms on the server, such as: iron farm, melon and pumpkin farm, lava farm with rotating cauldrons????
built like, 70% of the buildings in the Plains.
built a guillotine. ended up becoming the only person to have ever been executed by it after she got too impatient and decided to try it out on herself
built a cute little cottage on the side of a hill with a secret doorway in a waterfall that could only be opened by triggering skulk sensors hidden midair in hot air balloons with an elytra.
went to extreme lengths to prank Myriad with the lyrics of Mask (and got me every time. see her post about it here)
“Ryan”: Director of PASA (Plains Aeronautics and Space Administration) Affiliation: Plains
the only normal person on this server
hasn’t played minecraft since like 1.8. tried to get out of a boat once by ramming it in hopes that it would break. has died multiple times due to new game mechanics.
player with the most deaths on the server. Responsible for 11 out of the 17 collective deaths during the ancient city raid
built a scale model of the NASA Artemis moon rocket. went to space before we went to the End
Cygnus: Pontiff of the Plains Affiliation: Plains (leader)
insane builder
built the titular Retirement Home. also serves as a city hall and their personal manor
the Honorable Judge Cygnus. serves as judge to the like 50 court cases against Schleep that we never got around to holding yet
Lumo Affiliation: Wanderer
just vibing
frOg
Packyak Affiliation: Plains (he just happens to live under it)
MINEcraft
spends all his time mining. only resurfaces occasionally to upgrade his tools. rarely seen otherwise
bomb disposal robot during the ancient city raid.
ZodiacLight (not pictured)
the other Light on the server
minecraft sweat
With summer rolling around again and 1.20 coming out soon, Retirement Home SMP Season 2 is on the horizon!

Mumbo rambling excitedly about all the cool new possibilities of redstone technology with the skulk discovery and repeatedly describing the contraptions and mechanics as "handsomely genius" and "beautifully elegant" and just not being able to hide a giggle and a smile, perhaps even pulling on his collar and looking into the ground nervously at the talk of messing around with the new feautures. That's all
YOU ARE SO SO RIGHT oh my goodness. this makes me think about one of his more recent hc s9 episodes after coming back where he was really pushing to keep the skull sensor and related stuff in the pit around the vault. Not as related but so reminded me of that. AND I LOVE IT i can see it so clearly in my mind. him readjusting his tie a bunch in that same related train of thought, messing with the cufflinks on his shirt if the sleeves are rolled down instead of up for once. i can imagine him getting a little caught up in rambling to a friend too, maybe another hermit whos actually competent redstone-wise? although i can so imagine grian listening and poking light fun, its grian afterall. but being able to talk to someone who may not get it in the same way but who Gets it, who understands the usefulness and all around fun and beauty of the new features and redstone possibilities. i just know hes talked a few peoples ears off about it. very much like confiding in a friend about a crush you have >.<

I would love to hear your thoughts on if the stormlight characters were emperor's on the empires smp (like what would their empires be like)
ok. ok. i have never thought about this before and also i only got into empires recently and am only really caught up on pixlriffs pov but i will do my best so here goes
FIRSTLY. i think jasnah would have some sort of ancient empire a la pixlriffs because of the inherent history/archaeology approach to the lore, especially with her being a historian + generally intelligent/ingenuitive, i think thats where she'd fit best - and i feel like she'd have an alliance with navani from the get go
navani would absolutely 10000000% have a hugely redstone-based empire that she'd sink everything she had into, and she'd be all over the infrastructure of the server, but shed ALWAYS play it as like. her villagers are the actual engineers. downplaying her role in a way where it'd absolutely be unclear where the line between rp and actual self talk is
i havent touched on exports at all but i think navani would export less material goods stuff and more services, like setting up storage systems and transport systems within empires. and redstone itself of course, and she'd make a lot from exporting things like comparators and such that are hard to craft. jasnah on the other hand... enchanted books? and other book-related stuff, to maintain the whole scholar vibe? not totally sold but not against it either
dalinar would recreate urithiru in the middle of a mountain range, and he and navani would be next-door neighbors if not totally allied and occupying urithiru together. his export would probably be armor and tools, and possibly netherite and mob drops? and he'd be the one vying for every alliance he can get but always fumbling a few of them at a time, and he'd absolutely refuse to fight or drink potions for backstory reasons
kaladin. my mans. hed set up in a badlands at first and create this huge sprawling landscape of those terracotta spires, each with a different necessary part of his empire on each of them so he'd have an excuse to fly everywhere. he'd export elytra and rockets, but he'd be really generous with all of it, and he'd be one of the few alliances with dalinar that really stuck and he'd use urithiru as a place to practice his elytra moves.
shallan.... i feel like she'd lean into the DID system by making multiple facets to her empire, kinda like katherine's dichotomy between princess and monster hunter in season 2!! shallan herself would have a very colorful facade to her entire empire and export dyes and such, where veil would get the shadier parts and back alleys of town and do more of the treachery/pranking behind peoples backs. radiant would keep herself around a central palace, and be the one to come to for help dealing with the aftermath of veil's pranks. she'd probably start off with an alliance to jasnah, but slowly separate until they're not like, unfriendly, but they're not allied either
adolin would have a gold-based empire!! i imagine with like. a similar ancient greek influence to smallishbeans, but less colorful, and probably not floating in the sky. and he'd never get elytra to parallel the whole im not a radiant plotline, but he'd play up the yearning for one a lot at first, especially after he finds out that kaladin and shallan are. i also feel like he'd have a raid farm for whatever reason? like to deal with pillagers?
renarin would stick pretty much on his own, but he'd interact the most with adolin and kaladin. i feel like he'd make an empire in the deep dark after ridding it of shriekers and wardens completely on his own without anyone realizing, and set up huge underground cathedrals with his predictions set in the glass of the windows. and the entrance to that would be hidden in an unassuming, bland base on the surface that the others dont notice until skulk starts leaking out. and he'd make prophecies every once in a while that would freak the others out, but they'd always end up a little bit different than what actually happens.
his export would be him showing up unannounced to fight off wardens that get dropped in peoples bases before immediately resuming his unnassuming, meek act. (his serious material export is iron + copper, to try and signify his want to be more battle-worthy, but he's always running low on those materials because of it being an export)
and finally, because i cant help myself: moash would be one that joined the server late, and had a whole plotline of replacing one of the friend villagers in kaladin's empire. and theyd be best buds until moash went and killed dalinar in some prank or another, and he'd split off to his own empire designed like an inverse of kal's on the underside of the end islands. he'd theoretically export shulkers and enderpearls, but never to any of the lighteyes (on camera) (and that limit doesnt count when veil is at the front; in the lore, he doesnt know she and shallan are the same body)
that was a lot BUT i hope u like and i would absolutely like to hear ur thoughts on those designations/expansions on them if u have any!! this was a way more fun exercise than i expected :D

Since the Overworld has the Deep Dark now, does Hels potentially have anything similar? If it does, I have a feeling it's the sort of area Sic would make his 'home/base of operations'.
Ya know? I haven't really given that much thought but now that I am thinking about it, I honestly love the idea of Sic staying in a place like that more than the mines XD
Like he's big and scary and often attacks/kills people who disturb him. If would be good to be reliant on the sounds (though he's mostly deaf in one mangled ear) in a place like Hels
I think he'll end up sticking to the mines BUT I can see the Falloffs or the Depths being more deep dark-y. And if anything, Hex probably messes with a lot of skulk related redstone

Are your earlier oneshots about Ren and the Red King canon for Redstone and Sculk?
Yes and no.
Yes in the sense that they happened, no in the sense that they're not timeline applicable. I imagine the Ren and the Red King shorts happened before the events of Redstone and Skulk, the Red King and Ren have had their resolution -- whatever that entails -- and the Red King has mellowed out a bit since then. He's no longer new, hellfire and vengeance and righteous anger at the necessity of his creation. He's figured out who he wants to be in hels, and is being that thing.

Entry 4 - Red, or, Elements Cont.
It has been many days since my last entry. With the latest discoveries on the fringe of the realms once again upheaving our understanding of the world, I become hesitant to continue my work until I’ve constructed a better understanding of that which I write. It crossed my mind since I last wrote that I have far from covered everything in relation to the elements of this world. Of course, many details and much of the minutiae is to be elaborated upon where relevant in more specific entries, but after attending some history lectures from a professor I am particularly fond of, I concurred there is still much groundwork to go over before I progress. Primarily, there are gaps in the theory that require filling before any reference to it for further theories may be done.
First, to address what has been referred to as the “red predicament,” there are four, seemingly disparate, primarily red categories of being that exist. These are redstone, fungi, evil*, and fire/heat.
*Evil is relative, but it is worth noting how red is a recurring color in the eyes of hostile, non-redstone-powered creatures. In fact, it may be the key aspect tying the other three manifestations of the red element together. Redstone and heat are easier to explain, throughout mythic history technology and fire have been associated with corrupting forces. But fungus may require further analysis.
Fungus, as discussed here, refers to Overworld and Nether variants of mushrooms. Overworld mushrooms are warm in tone, from bright red to light brown, and even the grey mycelium they grow on has a red undertone. Nether mushrooms are similar, their base nature revealed in the warm orange spots that grow into the glowshrooms that both variants bear. Even the “warped” mushrooms are only named as such due to being altered by the presence of souls embedded into parts of the nether’s ground.
Both Nether and Overworld variants have some sort of resistance to another manifestation of red. Hostile (evil) mobs do not spawn in areas where mycelium has imbedded itself into the local biome, and the stems of Nether mushrooms can be used as building materials which are impervious to fire and heat.
Redstone, which has been considered an abiotic material due to its appearance and where it can be found, has been named a ‘stone.’ However, evidence may suggest that ‘redstone’ is actually a type of fungus that emits its own power. This theory requires some work however, as it is based in how it may relate to cave-based ecosystems that have been recently discovered on outermost worlds. Skulk is a little understood fungal growth which emits a redstone signal, and “glow lichen” grows on stone underground, much how redstone is found.
If redstone were a type of fungal growth or spore which emitted its own signals to communicate information of nutrients, instructions on spore release, and other info, it may indicate that “red” is the color of a sort of un-life, which hijacks life-filled creatures to cause them to destroy life sources, requires no external elemental source of power as it emits its own in a way that generates heat and/or light, and grows with a force so much stronger than life that it can appear where no life does.
Smaller points, only tangentially related but worth noting are as follows. Redstone can prolong the effects of brewed potions which also require nether wart to brew, indicative of fungal ability to 1. withstand heat and 2. provide energy? Mooshrooms can be actually removed of their mushrooms and will be revealed to be normal cows, which indicates how the red infests all that it touches?

just binged all of redstone and skulk in one go. HOLY SHIT!!! i left some comments on ao3 but that wasn't enough. i needed to come to your tumblr too bc this fic has Changed Me A Little. it makes sense- i've been subscribed to you on ao3 for a while (remember hound's tooth? i think that was when i started following your writing. and monsters splitting hairs, although i'm not quite caught up on that one), and that was for a good reason- but tanguish and helsknight are something else! part of why i like fanfiction is because i get to see more of characters i already like- it takes a special fic to get me so invested in characters i've basically just met! and you do it so well! like. the subtle character things! the way i can pick out the hermits' (and martyn's, but i'm calling him a hermit for the sake of convenience) traits in the helsmits, but warped and twisted around like a funhouse mirror? fantastic. i love it. im eating that shit up. the ilttle differences and similarities between tango and tanguish, helsknight and wels (bc he isn't acting very knightly right now), impulse and the demon- it's so cool to see! i also saw the other ask you got where you talked about your process, and how you give your characters a list of traits as a guide to writing them- i'm definitely going to have to borrow that trick. it works! so well! it shows in your writing in the consistency of how the characters behave!
some other thoughts i had while reading:
helsknight being religious probably has a lot more to do with him being a knight than wels being a lutheran irl (which is where his name comes from and i find that hilarious), but still. if it's unintentional it's hilarious and if it's on purpose then it's a fun easter egg!
i relate to and understand tanguish, because i too would want to befriend helsknight, and also because if a bunch of big scary people basically adopted me and tried to teach me how to use a knife i would be so pathetic about it.
i relate to and understand helsknight and tango, because tanguish is the weirdest little cat ever and i too am captivated by his pathetic little freak charms, and i want to be his friend.
i neither relate to nor understand wels, because 1) if i saw my friend's presumably-evil counterpart skulking around the shopping district i would likely call them first (just seems like the polite thing to do, and also bc if helsknight showed up and the ppl who found him didn't call wels about it i feel like he'd probably be more than a little pissed), and 2) look at tanguish. he's just a little guy. he's a little guy and it's his birthday. how could you be mean to him.
tl;dr: redstone and skulk has compelled me to the point that leaving comments on ao3 wasn't enough, i needed to ramble straight into your inbox because it's just so good.
Tumblr media
Oh my gosh! Firstly: thank you for all the kind words! I'm glad you're liking my writing so far, and thank you both for the comments and the scurry into the inbox. I love hearing people's thoughts, even if I don't have the spoons to respond to everyone all the time :'D
For your bullet points:
-- I didn't know Wels was Lutheran! I knew he was ex-military, and at least in my family's trends, military and religiosity go hand in hand, so it makes sense. But still! Learning new fun facts! I know nothing about the Lutheran Church [I was raised Baptist.] Probably gonna do some reading later.
-- I feel like Tanguish is going through that phase of "all the biker/military uncles have decided I'm one of them for some reason" and as someone who has gone through that before, for the same baffling non-reasons [used power tools in their presence once, a la Tanguish barely participating in a fight once] I sympathize. Very interesting somewhat scary people. Why did you invite me to sit at your table. Why do you keep slipping me tequila and buying me knives like I'm in on the joke.
-- Tanguish is such a specimen we all just want to look at him under a microscope. He is so scared yet so brave. He thinks knives are scary but he leaps off buildings. He's scared of getting hurt and seeing blood but he has no regard for his personal safety. How do you fit so many oxymorons in such a tiny body---
-- Wels please, he's a little guy and it's his birthday! Stop bullying him!!
Addendum: I agree Jackrabbit is very Tanguish coded. It is now on the playlist.
Want to live like an animal?
By the skin of your teeth?
Put your good face on, you're foolin' no one
You're a jackrabbit underneath
One step forward, step right back
Run for the hills, honey, run for the hills, honey
Run for the hills, don't look back

my wife wrote a poem using a leech metaphor and I read it and told them they should read redstone & skulk (I have been trying to get them to read it for like a month+ now). it's a very good poem and I think that they would relate to tanguish so hard
Oh I am leaning over your shoulders and encouraging your wife to write more poetry. There need to be more poets in the world! Give me the artistry of the written [and spoken] word!
Ahaha I wish you luck on convincing then to read the fic. I feel like sometimes it's hard for creatives to make time to consume instead of create. When you're really in a groove you just wanna keep going!

Hai-yo!
I’m Silverskye13, feel free to call me any variation of Silver/Sky/13 at your convenience. They/them/it pronouns, they/them preference.
General Info:
I’m an artist who sometimes moonlights as a writer. This is mostly a personal blog? I tend to float between the fandoms I enjoy ambiently, and occasionally throw in personal art to spice it up. Hermitcraft has been the big one recently, though I’ve been really deep into Undertale and Hollow Knight in the past. Additional places you can find me are:
AO3 at Silverskye13. All my chaptered fics go here, as well as a few of my one-shots. All the Hermitcraft one-shots haven’t been moved over there yet. They probably will be at some point, and I’ll update this when they are.
Redstone and Skulk is my current active fic, though I'm picking away slowly at several. This fic also has its own little set of playlists if you wanna listen along to the character vibes!
@beforeiwakecomic is my webcomic! It is on haitus since I’ve had a lot of intense life events come up this year, but the prologue is complete and posted.
@spazzcatreblogs is my reblog blog, where I queue most things I think are neat instead of tossing them on my main account.
Most major websites I’m on, I’m on as Silverskye13. I am by far the most active on Tumblr. Mutuals feel free to ask for my Discord/Telegram info.
Requests and Commissions:
Writing Requests: Open
Drawing Requests: TBA
Art Commissions: Open
Commonly Used Tags:
#the barking artist is my catch-all tag, but I’m going to be trying to use it for art exclusively from here on out. You might find a few text posts scattered in there, whoops.
#spazzcat barks is going to be my new, just, general talking tag
#spazzcat doodles is another art tag I use specifically for quick doodles,
#the barking writer is my writing tag, and it’s where 99.9% of everything fic related goes. I also have individual tags for the multi-chapter fics I’ve posted to AO3. They are simply tagged with their name, or a name acronym. [ex. Casting Rain, Monsters Splitting Hairs].
#answering asks is my ask tag, and includes any doodle/writing responses I have to asks in my inbox. My inbox is always open, I really like talking to people! Feel free to send me things. :D
I also have some smaller tags, more for organizational purposes than anything else. spazzcat liveblogging for liveblogs, spazzcat wips for work in progress drawings, the dark is rising is for various creepy things I enjoy that you may want to blacklist if that isn’t your thing, and sometimes I use darkposting for vents. I also have a delete later tag, and regularly purge the account of everything in it.
General FAQ:
I use Photoshop 10, 2019 ed. to draw with. Regular brush tool and the pencil tool are staples, and most of my brush packs are 5+ years old from DeviantArt. I frequently use references when I draw. I have a very old, beat up Bamboo Create that I draw on. It is 10 years old now, I think.
I’m also a regular user of Windsor Newton Watercolors and COPIC markers. My favorite paper is Arches Cold Press. Smooth...... good...........
I graduated from art school last year
I run on EST, but I do try to compensate for different time zones by reblogging posts at specific times of day.
I think leeks are adorable.
