For the moodboard asks, I just love Arlen and Cherrenth from my wip - The Shackles of Time.

Arlen is this young, reckless moon elf mage who left his people and wants to become a hero. He's optimistic, a massive bookworm, loves alchemy and stars and hot baths and rambles more often than not.

Cherrenth is his familiar, a cat-sized, dragon-like creature with blue and purple scales who acts as Arlen's exasperated, sarcastic voice of reason that he only listens to like half the time. Cherrenth questions all of Arlen's life choices, but rolls with them anyways and does his best to protect and help Arlen out. He also loves sausages, early mornings, and food in general.

I think this quote fits their dynamic in an affectionate sense. And if I'm reading it right, I know I'm going to be obsessed by their relationship.

This question is really hard. I have a lot of writing influences, but I think my biggest is mostly the TV shows I watch. I find it very satisfying to pick apart different shows of all kinds of genres. I find them easier to remember which makes them easier to analyze too 😅 it's helped me a ton with plotting and character creation!

This ask motivated me to write 103 words for How an Angel Gets Its Wings.

So, I saw Emry Clockpunk on your little list of topics you were wanting to ramble about, and I am very curious about all of it. I do admit, I'm not as familiar with Clockpunk, so I'd like to hear about how it works in your world and what role it plays in peoples' lives.

Hi! Thank you, I'm doing pretty good and I hope you are too!! Happy WBW :D

Since Clockpunk is traditionally based in clockwork and mechanical constructs (aka without electricity or engines, generally), I have taken it in a ~magical~ direction in the Ehlverse, and the people of Emarye are the ones who tend to get the most use out of it!

The funny thing about it, though, is that it's way more reliant on the Dwarven Starmetals than it has any right to be, considering there aren't any Starforges in Emarye and they don't do enough (legal) trade with the Dwarves to reasonably power the infrastructure they do... Corruption and black markets are, as it turns out, not a new thing over there, despite how much some politicians blame the Shadow of Fowden for it.

I think the most obvious/fun aspect of Clockpunk I've got going so far is that, rather than steam engines, their trains have big ol' wind up keys used to start up the wheels! They don't use any fuel, just rely on the self-perpetuating momentum inherent to Voltimony, and wind it backwards when they need to slow or stop.

Another thing I've used this kind of clockwork approach to is wheelchairs! Where we in the real world have electric wheelchairs, a lot of Emry folks have ones with keys and levers that start up Starmetal clockwork like that of the trains, and can control the speed with buttons by their hands!

[And because I'm talking about them, here's a sneak peek at the one featured in the WIP of the next Peoples of the Ehlverse illustration.]

I'm also participating in the great motivation experiment, albeit non-traditionally today (and definitely not for every ask ever), and...

Hey Ren!! It's been ages! Hope you're doing well ^^ Happy WBW!

I would say one of my favourite pieces of cute worldbuilding in my stories would be the fact that in Belvatria, there's a wedding tradition in which a couple plant a tree when they're married and take care of it together. It's supposed to represent the amount of care and time that goes into a successful relationship. My short story The Garden Maiden tells the story of how this tradition originated.

How many different genres have you tried writing in? Which ones were your favorites and why? Did you have any you didn't care for after trying? And are there any genres you haven't tried yet, but think might sound like fun to work with someday?

I mostly write fantasy, science fiction and adventure. I love to explore the concepts of hope and determination, or the lack thereof, which is a wonderful experiment when you look at it through the lens of fantasy or sci-fi. Adventure is basically me realising my childhood fantasies. These three are also regular components in my poetry. I've also dabbled in historic fiction and romance but they don't interest me as much. However, many of my wips do contain historic or romantic elements so I can say I'm working on them. I sometimes write mystery and action but I'm not so particular about it.

I would very much like to try my hand at satire. I read a lot of satirical essays and stories and I hope one day I'll get to write some.

Lila… tends to be more serious but in a different way than Xia — Xia’s more on the intimidating side of serious while Lila isn’t. It’s more that she’s focused. She does let loose, here and there, but she is driven by an old promise she made (in TDWAD time). She’s one of those character where I know her but putting it to words is a bit of struggle (not writing her but describing her).

Ok, so everything about the agency is a little wishy-washy but I might have figured it out a little bit more. The agency is named the ETA, or the Everlasting Trade Association (not new info and I’m iffy on the name now, but also not at the same time?). For clarification I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned, the Traders (more on the term below) probably pronounce the acronym as a word rather than the letters (ay-ta rather than e-t-a). Ignoring Xia’s, because that wasn’t asked about but I could tell you — Lila works in the Relics and Artifact department. I’m a little undecided, but I think she’s based in preservation but occasionally, as needed, is sent out with a recovery team (which brings up a question — does the preservation team also classify the things brought in? I think they do).

Diverging from the question for a bit (rambling about world/ETA stuff rather than Lila specifically, oops, but it still relates to her so I’m giving myself a pass): the term Trader. Technically, it’s not the most accurate term, especially for everyone not in recovery and even then it’s not great. It’s a slang term — some Evers look down on those who work in the ETA, see it as a sort of betrayal to the integrity of Everlasting kind as a whole. The term Trader comes as them trading their integrity for an easier life (or something similar, other Evers have different meanings but that’s a nicer one). As for the actual Traders, they had a bit of fun with it, made a sort of. system of trades that doubles as a type of communication (certain baked goods/drinks/whatever for certain requests, not as the prime way of communication but it is seen as being more polite, putting in that extra bit of effort and it’s a sort of tradition. It also probably started as a derivative from the agency name Traders from the trading bit, but they went the extra mile in retaliation from the more derogatory meaning others tried to put on it. (And, in attempt to feel better about ETA as the name — the purpose of it has changed over the years and the name is seen as being a bit outdated because of those changes).

Back to Lila. I can’t/won’t say too too much about the why because my brain wants to keep things under wraps, but. Lila doesn’t want to make a deal with just any Soul Keeper — it has to be Xia, because of her Blade. I mentioned in Xia’s intro that her Blade is different than most and the reason why is why it’s the one Lila needs. And as to why she needs it, it goes back to that old promise.

I… can’t really think of anything I want to ramble about with her, since I’m keeping her pretty under wraps. Thanks again for coming by, though.

Update on the progress, though: her collage is officially done and I’ve moved on to the writing bits. Going to see if I have a suitable quote, first, I think and just work my way down (her summary/description bit is going to be a pain, I feel, and it’s absolutely coincidence that I’m putting it off for last).

So, our dear friend @queerlilchinchin started a new ask game day called Simping Sunday where you just throw compliments at your favorite writers. So of course I'm here to throw some at you ^^

I adore your characters and how complex they are and how real their dynamics are. I also love your hurt and comfort scenes, you make the emotion and tension and comfort all flow so effortlessly from the beginning to the end. It always feels so natural and never feels rushed or out of place. Your writing style itself is also lovely, I know I've said it before, but it really does remind me of the way water flows. It has a very fluid and comforting rhythm to it.

Omg Ren, you have been showing me with love and encouragement all weekend and it's been a balm after a hectic week.😭

I'm ofc very glad you enjoy the characters and their dynamics as those are what I care the most about and am the most proud of.😊 And that they feel realistic! That's a big one to hear, cause that's always been an issue for me.

The hurt comfort scenes flowing naturally and feeling natural🥺❤✨ yes that's a big one to celebrate. I have been so reluctant to write what I love most, and I'm so glad I finally do write more of these scenes and that I'm doing a good job at it. 💪✨

Hello, hello Ren! Happy belated STS! This is a great question I'll do for the Paragon gang!

Nate would describe Reese as the sweetest guy you'd ever meet and the best person to have watching your back.

Reese would describe Kay as the energetic little sister of the group who manages to keep their spirits up.

Kay would describe Shaun as a buzz kill sometimes, but she knows he has a quirky side, too, it just takes a lot of work to get it out of him.

Shaun would describe Matt as extra, over the top, and very talkative (affectionate)

Matt would describe Nic as a little distant, hard to read, and, if he's honest with himself, a little intimidating (which is hilarious given she's 18 and he's like 35).

Nic would originally describe Sky as arrogant and confrontational, but she later learns that her and Sky have more in common than she thought.

And finally, Sky would describe Nate as intelligent and very resourceful, an obvious choice for leader of the group.

Probably the Calvaeran Lakelands and the meaning of sunrises and sunsets in Calvaera when a newborn is born. Simply because I am obsessed with the meaning of sunsets and sunrises.

For two I'll use 'Where Stars are buried':

I'll use Cal for this. For Cal it's probably the fact that he never told his brother and found family who beat him up.

Ooh, this is a really good question!!

ATQH: Definitely the scene I call The Incident, hands down. It shatters my soul a thousand ways, and I love it to death. It's one of my favorite scenes I've ever written, too!

CoS: I'm not actually sure! I haven't written much for this story, and I'll be curious to see what ends up being my favorite moment when all is said and done!

Unnamed WIP #1: I haven't written it yet, but there's a scene where Something Bad happens to Alora, and <Prince> finds out, and I'm very excited to write that scene and everything that comes after it.
