they made reusable water bottles / tumblers so you would buy one (1) and use it at starbucks etc instead of creating waste with disposable cups, plastic lids, plastic straws, but obviously if you buy one thing and use it forever that's not good for the company that manufactures it, so they made "limited edition" versions and turned it into a trend / status thing to collect dozens of them, completely defeating the original purpose of reducing plastic waste

Comparing Copper and Steel water bottle: Which is More Beneficial for Your Health?
Tumblr media
Stainless steel water bottle vs copper water bottle taste - How to choose the best? There are various pointers you will learn in this blog that help you find your best hydration partner !!!
Overview on steel or copper water bottle is good for health
Copper Bottles
For their beneficial effects on health, copper bottles have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Copper is a common material for water bottles because it has antibacterial qualities that help destroy viruses and germs. Studies have revealed that the quantity of copper that seeps into the water is not sufficient to have any positive effects on health. Moreover, copper bottles require regular cleaning and maintenance to prevent corrosion and tarnishing. They are also not dishwasher safe, which can be inconvenient for some users.
Stainless steel water bottle
Reusable water bottles frequently come in stainless steel varieties. They are strong, light, and simple to clean. Additionally, because stainless steel is a non-reactive material, as it does not release any toxic substances or flavours into the water. There are many grades of stainless steel bottles, with 18/8 food-grade stainless steel being the most prevalent. This type of leakproof stainless steel water bottle is trustworthy for water bottles because it can be used to handle both food and liquids. Additionally, stainless steel bottles may be cleaned and maintained easily because they are dishwasher safe.
Parameters to Choose the Steel Bottles over Copper
Durability:
Stainless steel is a strong, long-lasting material that is able to endure exposure to weather, pressure changes, and temperature changes. On the other side, copper bottles have a tendency to be more delicate and prone to dents, scratches, and corrosion over time. Bottles made of stainless steel can survive accidental drops and impacts without breaking and can last for years with little care.
Benefits to health:
Copper bottles are thought to be better alternatives to other materials because of their antibacterial qualities. However, excessive copper consumption can have negative health effects, particularly for people with specific medical conditions. Contrarily, stainless steel is a safe and healthy material for drinking water as it doesn't contain any toxic or dangerous substances.
Maintenance requirements:
Stainless steel is a useful material for daily usage because it is simple to clean and maintain. Additionally, stainless steel doesn't absorb flavours or odours, which is a common issue with other materials. Contrarily, copper needs routine cleaning and care to avoid corroding or turning green from contact with moisture or acidic substances.
Pricing:
Due to the cost of the raw material and the production process, copper bottles are often more expensive than stainless steel bottles. Contrarily, stainless steel is a material that is easily accessible and reasonably priced, making a wider spectrum of consumers able to use it.
Sustainability:
Once the bottle has reached the end of its useful life, stainless steel is a highly recyclable material that may be repurposed or reused. On the other hand, copper is less environmentally friendly and needs a lot of energy to be extracted from the earth.
If you're looking for a reusable and eco-friendly water bottle, stainless steel is the way to go.

Reusable Water Bottles Hold 40,000 Times More Bacteria Than A Toilet Seat: Study
Even though bottles may serve as a breeding ground for high numbers of bacteria, a microbiologist at the University of Reading has said that it is not necessarily dangerous.
Tumblr media
A new study has found that reusable bottles can harbour around 40,000 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat.
A team of researchers from US-based waterfilterguru.com swabbed different parts of water bottles including the spout lid, screw-top lid, stray lid and squeeze-top lid, three times each, and found two types of bacteria present - gram-negative rods and bacillus, HuffPost reported.
"They are objects that can't betray us," Australian Catholic University clinical psychologist and hoarding disorder expert, Associate Professor Keong Yap, said, comparing the phenomenon with objects children use to soothe anxiety (like stuffed toys). "They are reliable and predictable, unlike people who can hurt us," Mr Yap added.
In their study, the researchers explained that while gram-negative bacteria can cause infections that are increasingly resistant to antibiotics, certain types of bacillus can result in gastrointestinal issues. They compared the cleanliness of the bottles to household objects and stated that they contain twice as many germs as the kitchen sink, can harbour four times the amount of bacteria as a computer mouse and 14 times more than a pet's drinking bowl.
"The human mouth is home to a large number and range of different bacteria," Imperial College London molecular microbiologist, Dr Andrew Edwards, said, as per New York Post. "So it's not surprising that drinking vessels are covered in microbes," he added.
However, even though bottles may serve as a breeding ground for high numbers of bacteria, a microbiologist at the University of Reading, Dr Simon Clarke, said that it is not necessarily dangerous. "I've never heard of someone getting sick from a water bottle. Similarly, taps are clearly not a problem: when did you last hear of someone getting ill from pouring a glass of water from a tap? Water bottles are likely to be contaminated with the bacteria that are already in people's mouths," Mr Clarke said.
Further, the study revealed that squeeze-top bottles are the cleanest of the three styles tested, with a tenth of the amount of bacteria as one with a screw-top or straw-fitted lid. The researchers recommended washing reusable bottle at least once a day with hot soapy water, and sanitizing it at least once a week.

went to see Jesus Christ Superstar today and the theatre didn't want people sneaking in alcohol so they were checking bags for any & all drinks. and since these days a lot of people have reusable water bottles they had like plastic buckets for dumping out water.
so anyway im going in and see one bucket of water and (I assume) a confiscated bottle of wine next to it. look over at the other bucket and it is full of what looks like a mix of water and wine. there like. hm. water & wine. jesus. something going on here.

So, a thing I've seen in fic recently is characters using single use water bottles all the time, and I was reminded that not everyone has a massive collection of reusable water bottles covered in stickers, so I'm curious:
I'm also curious where you're from and if this has an age component. Please reblog for sample size!

I have been looking into sustainability more than usual for reasons I have talked about previously and one thing that hadn't occurred to me because I don't often leave the house is if you're caught without water outside your house
Even if you carry a refillable water bottle where can you get it filled? Especially for free? A lot of people would end up buying a disposable bottle which is obviously not great
Well like everything there is apparently an app for that, at least in the UK
This app tells you the nearby places you can get your water bottle refilled for free
Incredibly useful and I wish I had known about it earlier but I wanted to share in case anyone else was like me and didn't know this existed
It's not the best app in the world but it does the job and I also find it useful because as a disabled person I often need access to water badly
So hope someone else finds it helpful

I kind of want to try making mead or ambrosia 👀
Obviously not right now because I have Shit To Do; but maybe during the summer after I’ve moved
#alcohol mention#Apparently you can make mead out of honey and I love honey so of course I have to try it#I want to make more food from scratch so I can reduce my plastic consumption#because my ten-year goal is to convert to a completely anticapitalist zero-waste lifestyle#Just for me… I don’t put pressure on anyone to do the same unless they’re well-off and being ridiculous about their consumption#Except for maybe encouraging people to switch to reusable water bottles if they’re in an area where the tap water is potable#(like where I live)#or flaunting my canvas shopping bag that I got for 5 dollars at a hardware store whenever possible#Okay I guess I do push people a little bit#But it’s all reasonable things directed at people I know are physically mentally and financially able to do those things#or I’ll just casually mention microplastics and pollution in conversation as a “fun fact”#But I’m not ridiculous about it with anyone but myself#I hold myself to some weird standards that I don’t hold others to and I’m fine with it#Obviously it’s the corporations’ faults that everything is the way it is and no single person can make a huge difference#But if everyone does one thing to help the planet; then it might buy us some time to change the system#There is also the issue of supply and demand; if more people reduce plastic intake then less plastic will be produced#But again: it’s very hard to be ethical in this society. EVERYTHING enjoyable is packaged in plastic and it sucks#(ok not literally everything but consider: most candy is wrapped in plastic and clothes have plastic tags and chips are in plastic#sushi is in plastic containers and meat is in shrink wrap or styrofoam and most modern chewing gum is a byproduct of vinyl#toys are packaged in plastic etc. etc.)
