Great women in paleontology: Diana Mussa | Grandes mulheres na paleontologia: Diana Mussa
Tumblr media
🇬🇧 Diana Mussa, born in Campos dos Goytacazes on January 19, 1932, and passed away in Rio de Janeiro on May 8, 2007, was a renowned Brazilian geologist and paleobotanist, globally recognized for her expertise in Devonian flora. She was a trailblazer in this field in Brazil and also a respected professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
The youngest of five siblings, Diana was the daughter of Lebanese parents. Since childhood, she harbored the dream of becoming a naturalist, driven by her deep interest in nature and natural processes. In 1952, she moved to Rio de Janeiro to study Natural History at the National Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters of the University of Brazil (now UFRJ), where she also pursued Geology. During this time, she had the opportunity to intern under renowned researchers such as Dr. Fernando R. Milanez at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden and Dr. Calvino Mainieri at the São Paulo Institute of Technological Research.
In the late 1950s, she joined the Convent of the Poor Clares to volunteer with underserved populations, and she was sent to Manaus. Between 1958 and 1961, she lived in Tefé, conducting research on fossilized woods and participating in missionary activities. After returning to Rio de Janeiro for health treatment, she joined the National Commission of Nuclear Energy and commenced her postgraduate studies in 1973 at the Institute of Geosciences of the University of São Paulo, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Antonio Carlos Rocha-Campos. Her thesis, defended in 1982, on the Permian Lignitafofloras of the Paraná Basin, Brazil (States of São Paulo and Santa Catarina), was approved with distinction.
Diana became a researcher at the National Department of Mineral Production and later worked at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, where she became an Adjunct Professor of Paleobotany in 1993. Throughout her career, she described approximately 30 genera of fossilized plants, leaving behind an important legacy in the form of her collection of fossil wood slides. Additionally, she was a founding member of the Brazilian Society of Paleontology and a member of various other international and national organizations in her field. Her name inspired the naming of the genus Mussaeoxylon seclusum Merlotti 1998, for Gondwanan fossil gymnosperm wood from Brazil, and the species Glossopteris mussae Ricardi-Branco et al. 1999, for new Permian fossil leaves from São Paulo.

Another post about my feast gear. I'm just so proud of what we've got. The plates are actually from Kohl's originally but we got them from a silent auction. The bowls are from Prairie Edge in Rapid City. The napkins are linen ones, the placemats we stamped in a class at an event, the forks and spoons are from Ranger Reproductions, and the candles and cup covers are both site tokens from different events. The cups are period appropriate e-ware cups that would make sense for 600-1000 Scotland, thrown by Farolfus filius Ricardi (Northshield's current kmoas and soon to be newest Laurel). The sprang bag for the deck of cards was made by a local too (I forgot her name) and the deck of cards is all Irish mythological characters, with lots of good heraldry and knotwork and stuff. We also have some knives that really aren't period looking but those go on our belts and not in our basket.

A Learning Curve
The reliance on smartphones for interactions by Gen Z leads to a learning curve with the development of necessary social skills for interacting with people in person.  This can be seen with Gen Z’s difficulty in developing and understanding critical nonverbal communication skills, discussed by Gabriela Riciardi with Quartz," Younger workers also need help with nonverbal cues—the kind that help you keep eye contact, express through gestures, and read a room.”(Ricardi 2023), proving the curve with Gen Zs skills social skills in the workplace.
The comfort and control provided when communicating through their phones and technologies can become a crutch for people leading to antisocial tendencies. This leads to an avoidance of in-person interactions. This furthers the severity of gen zs weakened social skills. This avoidance and subsequent weakening of social skills can have cascading effects on mental health and well-being. Without the nuanced understanding and practice of nonverbal cues and face-to-face interactions, Gen Z may find themselves feeling more anxious and less confident in social situations. This anxiety and lack of confidence can lead to a cycle of avoidance, where the comfort of digital interactions is preferred, further limiting opportunities to develop essential interpersonal skills.

Likewise, there are at least three cautio inscriptions in another manuscript, one of which states that it was a joint deposit by six people. The book is Lyra’s Postillae on the Bible (BodL, MS Bodley 251, mentioned previously for the high value in one of these pledge-inscriptions). Two of the inscriptions, dated 1401 and 1403, are almost illegible but still serve to indicate that this book was deposited multiple times. Not only was it used to secure loans on multiple occasions but also a more legible inscription indicates that in one instance at least six people were involved in using it to secure a loan. On 18 March 1402, the book was the surety of ‘Johannis Blew, Ricardi Courtenay, Roberti Newby, Wilelmi Oldeni, Philippi Morgan, magistri Thome <…>‘ who deposited it in the ‘Waugham Hussy’ chest. Richard Courtenay is the key figure in this group. He led an ambitious, successful, but relatively short life, and enjoyed the ‘special regard’ of Henry V. Richard’s influential uncle, William Courtenay, Archbishop of Canterbury, had bequeathed the book to him for his lifetime only. In short order, Richard pledged it to the loan chest with his friends. The cash raised by this joint pledge was 18 marks. Lovatt explains that one reason for two or more people to deposit a joint pledge was in order ‘to borrow more than the statutory limit’ from the chest, by combining their entitlements. This would have been necessary for pledges of especially valuable items. In the fifteenth century, then, pledge-inscriptions make it clear that sustainable books could and did circulate through many hands.

Afdeling brokkies
In medio huius articuli extat epistola Richardi abbatis Sancti-Vanne quondam saeculo primo quarto decimo.
Et recedens a corpore, accusatur anima monachi a tribus malis spiritibus amittendi cultellum
Apocalypsis abscondita
Lectio prima, Epistola Ricardi in didacticam genus aliorum orbis itinerum bene decere videtur.

"Instead of using the “block,” Musk suggested that X users can use the mute feature instead. Currently, however, the social network’s mute button simply removes an account’s posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking that account — whereas blocking an account prevents that account from viewing your public posts on X. When you “mute” X/Twitter accounts, they are still able to reply to your public posts (you just don’t get notifications, and replies are hidden from your view by default)."
--'excerpt
This THIS is what they all been threatening to lose their shit and fearing the stalker armed-forces will get them over!!?
They'll be able to read their tweets still?
How does that make you more vulnerable? Again it seems this attacks the pride of clout while maximizing X as a platform (still see ads or connect to others in system)
DMs still have blocks
What the h*** people everybody's been talking about like he's removing all barriers and fences to being attack when in fact this is how most platforms I've been a part of and focused on have worked for decades
And to be honest I kind of found that feature annoying. You can still curate your timeline and your interaction with Twitter I mean x
More importantly the point of x isn't to be a point of individual digital identity it's supposed to be an enormous matriculation point so that that way they can sell ads or create or facilitate interaction and business
But the way some people have been talking it up I mean I admit I held off too but this isn't even that deep in the article like 3 paragraphs down
And real people who have serious opinions and influence for those opinions have been talking it up John ricardi people like that
What the f*** I just lost a s*** load of respect for people
No wait this is how they've always acted isn't it?
That's why they like Twitter or more accurately did effectively they didn't have to hold themselves to any account as a journalist/editorial then they would inadvertently but very reliably create drama and then be able to report on that drama
Don't expect some individuals to get it all right out the gates but when you follow their Twitter feed you assume that you're getting information from an authoritative source especially if they use it as their primary professional point of contact with the public
And then they basically act like a rumor mill and a cat cluntil something happens and then suddenly it's news
No wonder they hate Elon Musk effectively he's destroyed their brand identity or the ability to curate their brand identity to everyone's captive audience
Even when I was growing up I was told that newspapers tend to slant intent how they present themselves to a certain viewpoint period for the intelligence yeah that have grown up under the rise of new media and social media and primarily relocated their platforms or even perhaps their individual careers there
Having the equivalent of a trendy I don't know bookstore gay club whatever the culture was for Twitter was awesome because that meant that 60 to 80% of the work was done for you and now all you had to do was the social hierarchy brinksmanship s***
Stir up s*** maybe white night a little for a big cause make sure you're talking to people who perhaps are curious or need you as an outlet or a hook of access
And then afterwards draw them to your actual websites where your views and clicks get you measures for success thus guaranteeing how you're viewed by your employer and perhaps even get bonuses
But elan's disruption of the overall culture and feel of the place has made it so instead of effectively being the equivalent of the Detroit Free Press only worldwide and through every possible Lens that's only allowed with that circumstance it's become more the entire news section with all sorts of specialties
Yes this has exposed you to hate groups as well as crazy and invalid and false ideas but it wasn't doing that otherwise it was just those ideas were sort of in the lens
Such as all the news that's come out about say covid measures or Johnny Depp's trial or what have you
The only viewpoint for consensus was very carefully directed
Sort of like what happens with different brand identities Disney has never been the family friendly company even when that was their brand even when Walt was alive they were doing all sorts of s*** and needless to say none of the actual people that made up the company or how they did business ever matched that image
But it was important for brand identity because that's what they were trying to sell and at each level of engagement they tried to focus on that
So if say Disney goes under very likely just to keep that brand loyalty as well as influence and prestige someone's going to probably make it so that everything looks the same but it operates especially behind the scenes and who gets the money on top and has Fidel say is what changes if apple bought them
Even though they are considerably poorer than apple or at least in Dire Straits that they would need to buy out
And that's what's going on with Twitter it's not so much that the platforms gotten that much less operatively Unreliable or full with more deception it's that it's more a matter of what used to be a pretty left-leaning Tech liberty Prague culture that was maintained by algorithms that then slipped a bunch of other stuff under that well surface flow the foam of the river of information
Or perhaps the shiny river boats on the river of s***
Has suddenly changed what's their advertising in their aesthetics same s*** river but now everybody's not as equally entertained so they're noticing all that s***
It's because the boats have changed they have to put out their own and they're absolutely terrified because chances are they either never learned or have atrophied in the skills in order to do their own boating
I mean yeah these are changes and for goodness sex I don't believe that the choice in name change was brilliant by any means
But putting the effect of speed limits as well as trying to focus how the platform is going to be a platform for use as opposed to a community plus identity for purpose and lifestyle might honestly be a decent enough change
Not even going to call him a super genius or brilliant or not motivated by ego or insecurity or a bunch of other things. that describes everyone I f****** know
But at the very least even if it's a failed or dumb idea it's kind of one of those dumb ideas you half to do in order to come up koran the idea that actually works because it's semi viable or has a point to it at the very least it's 1 of those things you have to do in order to learn how to succeed at not because you don't know anything but you have to know how to apply things in this particular instance
Then again maybe I'm just going completely bananas and there's lots of details and gaps that I haven't been payingattention too but for the most part when I use x it's pretty much the same for me period the names have changed I have noticed some more difficulty browsing in the sense that my browser will reset a number of times but aside from everybody screaming the sky is falling the sky doesn't seem to actually be falling
At best like your testimony of how people are being exposed to ideas that they absolutely despise which is more of a cultural trend and quite frankly it's kind of disturbing along the lines of oh the redneck/black people/gay people are moving into the neighborhood gotta leave.
To be fair it's a bit of the inverse of that where the incredibly progressive everyone's kind of on the same page stuff are dealing with the fact that people who don't like how they live or do things are more or less moving in or more accurately becoming more visible or not trying to blend in as much
Or worse requiring 10 to 25% more effort in order to not interact with and easier to see and notice
And yes I can see how that is annoying or inconvenient but I'm thinking about how the reverse has been happening to them in terms of transvisibility LGBT normalization and mainstreaming
They haven't been arming the conservative anti all these people mob they've just stopped well marginalizing them period and as someone who's been marginalized for so long I don't like the idea of those tools being in use period because it's only a matter of fad sway or Convenience or profit until they decide that they're going to turn them on someone else and they'll have the surface level in order to do so
As illustrated with some particularly nasty # movements or bad ideas that had very good sources such as black lives matter or man I can't even remember the sexes of one you know the 1 we're powerful we're and upper classmen who had lots of power Influence history and development and aid to various left-wing progressive and liberal causes turned out to also be perpetuating some of the most grotesque crimes that we somehow thought to ourselves were an outgrowth of someone's political affiliation, regional locations or class? And then when that wasn't enough added on sex and race too.
along with religion but for some reason not religions based on their beliefs, member actions, histories, and values but you know labels and particular personal disdain for the influence that they've had on you throughout your life.
Social media taught us how to confuse bias with wisdom with prejudice with intelligence
And it did this well for lack of a better word without any regard to what your beliefs leaning or what have you were
Because it was able to allow you to jump to the right conclusion without all the thinking and researching and struggle and mistakes and double-checking
And if you ever have a reason to doubt yourself or just want reinforcement you could just make sure that you joined the right flow
I'm not even against the idea of echo chambers such as they might be
But you cannot make a large public platform one because that's effectively going to marginalize people's ability to find their own echo chamber and develop influence and people made it very clear that's what they wanted
But they always did so under the guise of individual safety or a collective need for society to make them safe in order to not be hurt
But this whole I need my block instead of my mute function kind of well rips off the mask for me Particularly how much it tries to play into reaction and ignorance I suppose to just you know letting us assess this
At the very least if this was coming out of place of safety conturn and these are the people who say one of control guns then this is your practice run for how you remove the ability of people in order to act a sensor another or act against another And then develop new behaviors and habits to your new restrictions
Even while they provide you presumably the same level of effective protection
