Earth has more oddities than any other planet that Gamora has ever set foot on — and they range from completely baffling to often irritating, but sometimes charming in their own way.

The latter is something she will never admit, even here in a quiet moment, with Richard as her only witness. It’s not that she doesn’t think it wouldn’t be safe with him — he’s never repeated anything that’s transpired in private between them — but if any credit to the planet is said out loud, that would make it true. She still hasn’t forgiven Earth (or Carol Danvers and Peter Quill, but also Earth in general) for its transgressions against her personally, after all.

But for the moment, she’s content to set that anger aside and allow Richard to give her a tour of one of Earth’s oddities, in the space of land behind his childhood home. Lying side by side in the grass, their arms just barely touching, he’s been teaching her about groupings of stars — the stories they tell, and how, very oddly, the groupings are supposedly made.

“They, uh — they make pictures,” he’d said by way of explanation at one point, as if that could actually explain anything at all.

Still, she’s missed him (something else she’ll never admit, even upon pain of death), so Gamora has humored him, squinting up at the stars and pretending to follow along. She’s even sincerely tried to imagine herself as one of these humans, looking up to the stars and seeing infinite possibilities of shapes and stories. If she’d had a different life, maybe, she could understand imagining such things, or at least the appeal in trying; maybe the Zen-Whoberi had done similar on clear nights once.

She’ll never know, though, will she?

The thought is sharp as a knife, as bitter as poison, and goes down about as easily as either one. She does her best to shove it aside as quickly as possible, and points to the sky, asking in a voice that’s still too tight for her own liking:

“What’s that one?”

“That,” he says, “is the Big Dipper. Supposed to look like a spoon. You start there —” He raises his arm, pointing indiscriminately toward a cluster of stars. It’s supposed to be toward a specific one, Gamora knows, so she, again, nods as though she’s understood, and continues to do so as she follows the movement of his finger. “And then you go down like that.”

When he shifts, his shoulder bumps against hers, it does so softly. Warmly. She likes the feeling.

“Kinda curves up at the end there,” he continues without missing a beat, moving his finger like so. “And there it is.”

She falls silent for a time, squinting harder than ever. Trying, sincerely trying, to spot the pattern — but it’s beyond her. She wonders, briefly, if the human that had decided on this had been intoxicated, and everyone else around them had simply just decided to humor them, as she has been doing with Richard this whole time. That’s, again, something she’ll never know.

But she does know that her patience has worn thin. So, with a sidelong glance cut in his direction, she tells him, bluntly, “That doesn’t look anything like a d’ast spoon.”

Tilting his head, he considers for a beat. “No, you’re right. It really doesn’t.” And then —

He laughs, a much more genuine thing than she’d ever heard from him even long before she’d thought him to be dead; she doesn’t even attempt to suppress the smile beginning to tug on her mouth.

peter quill never truly came home. i had to talk about this panel and gamora’s reasoning for being with peter (when we know the real one is the mcu synergy and cates last run adding it in...) she settled cause he was just there. but peter like richard never came home either. he was just able to hide it better unlike rich, pretend he was all there when he himself hasn't been. they are the same side of one coin. and its tricky to see that cause peter’s continuity and character portrayal in the comics have been all over the place, but its there! which brings me to this moment between them.

peter trying to convince himself this new life of basically retiring is what he wants when it’s a place Gamora wanted with Richard. it’s like getting a new, similar toy and hoping that one does what you wanted the other to do. it doesn’t work that way. i think Gamora will have to accept that as well down the line (if she hasn’t already with her inner monologue in issue#3). Blaming Richard for Peter’s own personal choice to continue his purpose to the galaxy needs to be addressed. Hercules did. But very briefly. I’m sure it will when Peter is alive again. it will be hypocritical if peter doesn’t get a chewing by her when he and Richard did the same thing. they will never stop doing what they do best.

but richard may start finally healing and peter find his purpose as starlord again (cause thats def coming). we may definitely get switcharu with these two at the end where richard does retire or finally accepts not doing everything on his own so he could find a middle ground of being a hero but not fully giving his whole self while Peter upholds his title like in the past, past early starlord comics. it just reminds me how bad the decision was to kill peter off so early on to NOT get any content with these two who have so much history together.

and yes im still very much holding out for richmora to be endgame again! the feels this issue gave me seeing them together again. its not over between these two, no matter what they say and we know it, theres still tons to comb over that can be done in just 1 issue.

she takes to tracing ARCS on his skin with her thumbs, back and forth while she watches his face with the tiniest amount of glee, waiting for him to LEAN BACK IN and set things RIGHT, only because she knows he will ------------------- for in a universe full of UNCERTAINTIES, richard rider finding a reason to KISS HER again and again isn’t one of them.

It was inevitable because MCU synergy but I hate that they just do it in front of Rich (who might as well be a cardboard cutout in this comic) whom they were setting up in a romance with Gamora again for whatever reason but at least he's free from this mess. I would be OK with Richmora if they build on it but no one cared to and I don't care anymore either. At least Ewing is doing something better with Rich and Wendell and I'm glad he's not with Cates' Guardians.

Too true. This whole Thanos arc was ...terrible. And no Cates, I don’t care about Alt Phyla and Moondragon and just want 616 back.

the first time is a very rushed and desperate thing; they're in the middle of a war, after all, and it's one of those horrible, high-casualty days when they mutually need a reminder that they're actually alive. it's... like, on a table in a makeshift command room, they don't even make it to a bed that first time.

gamora likes to make it a personal challenge to see how many marks she can leave on rich, and how long they last, before the nova force starts to work to heal them. yes, this means they're into knifeplay LMAO, but rich definitely gets something out of this, too; after all his conga line of trauma, he likes reminders that good things actually happened? so if some of this... lasts, he knows that was real.

pretty well, actually! the best that both of them have slept in years. and during the war, that was one of the drivers developing feelings between them; the comfort, the ease that these nights came to them.
