A while back I felt a bit down, and in an attempt to counteract, I decided to indulge myself with something good and fluffy and uplifting, something to wistfully stare and smile at, something like… a Romantic Portrait Commission from @galadrieljones! ^_^

So here’s my girl Ruth with her big boy Jim, in the process of preparing some Shepard’s Pie and I just love how happy, close and cuddly they are.... just look at their smiiiiiiiiles 🥰😭💕💕💕💕😭🥰🥰🥰🥰

Hey Lúa, here's a fact about my Mass Effect OC Ruth van de Graaff: In their teenage years, Ruth and her brother Ezra found an old rusted little car in an abandonded barn on their uncle's farm. They refurbished it (with help from their uncle's many illustrious friends), named it Freddy, and drove around in it whenever they were visiting. She's even got a tattoo of it on her left calf ^_^ Have a nice Sunday evening! ^_^

There were no old cars on Mindoir, at least not at those in the magazines that Jo’s father had brought with him from Earth. Her favorite was the 1969 Chevy Camaro and sometimes, sitting in the old family skycar, she pictured herself driving it down the dusty roads of her parent’s homeworld.

The first time she saw one of these old cars was in Vancouver, not long after the Batarian raid that left her orphaned and severely wounded. It was a replica, though, but enough to make her smile for the first time in a long time.

It's been weeks already since they've arrived, and last weekend I finally managed to take some nice pictures to show them off - my second Plushy OTP, Ruth van de Graaff and Jim Raynor, as made by plushy magician @tokutenshi-crafts 💕💕💕

And of course they were joined by Plushy OTP No. 1, i. e. Rona and Din ^_^

Once more I'm amazed at the details!

I mean, look at Jim? The tattoos, the cigarette pack, the grey streaks, the skull on his shin bracer? THE TACTICAL VEST IN ITS ENTIRETY??? Marvelous, and most excellent!!!

(He actually also has cuffs/gloves, but I had forgotten to take them with us on this day..)

Also, if you look closely, Ruth's right arm is shorter because she lost her right hand. Aaand her pilot jumpsuit is removable! Aaaand her luscious locks with the undercut are mighty enviable 💕💕💕

I love them all very much 😌🤗

Hey Miss Ladybug, hope you are doing fine! Thank you for indulging me and asking about y about my sweet mind childs <3

1. How do they respond to having a song stuck in their head? Does that happen to them often?

Both Ruth and Rona like to sing and have really nice voices actually. Rona is a bit shy, though, so she usually lowkey hums along with the stuck song. Ruth doesn't care and sings at the top of her lungs. If she must suffer the song stuck in her mind then so shall the others xD

Ruth is the one where this happens more often. She's also seldom seen without her music player at hand ^_^

7. How do they cope with losing an argument?

Rona rather loses an argument than having it escalate. She will be cranky though, if she feels it was an unfair solution. That's actually a thing she has to work on xD

Ruth mopes for a while if she loses. If over time she recognizes the merit in the other one's points/decisions, she'll approach them and comment as much, but it'll take a while because Pride is her vice and she has to overcome her stubbed ego first xD

She's totally up for escalating a heated argument into sexy times - only with Jim, though. There's no losers in that one ;)

14. Would they prefer to act or react?

Rona definitely is more a reacting type.

Ruth on the other hand likes to jump in and deal with the details as they come up.

18. What is the most inappropriate thing they have ever done in public?

That one time, a 10 year old Rona brought a Fereldan Fire Frog to the chantry service. Now, the Fereldan Fire Frog - and I quote from The Concise Illustrated Guide to the Flora and Fauna of Ferelden by Daveth Attbrough:

"is a remarkable animal. Small and of nondescript green-brownish colour, it is overseen easily in its natural habitat of muddy ponds and lakes. However, one will never forget an encounter with an angry specimen. If provoked sufficiently, its colour turns to an angry red, and it oozes off a slimy substance that sticks to everything that touches it, and causes red rashes not unlike stinging nettles, but of larger size and longer lasting pain. In this agitated state, the frog will also hop around frantically as a means of distracting potential enemies, to then go into hiding again and watch them agonize." *

Suffice to say chaos ensued when the frog escaped Rona's hold. The service ended prematurely and half the community had rashes and was very angry at Rona xD

For Ruth, it was hat one time during her days at the Military Academy in Amapá, Brasil, when she mooned one of the instructors she didn't like during a lecture. She had drawn two sleepy eyes on her buttocks, and written "BOOOORING!" above them in bold black letters. If you dig deep enough there's still the video circulating in the 'Net. Brother Ezra almost choked from laughing, but her parents were not so amused and had to pull a few favours so Ruth wouldn't get suspended.

I had this idea that the actual StarCraft version of Ruth gets stranded in space, in some shuttle, with her broken viking mech on board (because she’d totally be a viking pilot... like, big boom, front battle AND flying? Hell yeah, she’s in!) and then gets picked up by the Protoss onto the Spear of Adun.

And there’s Vi, the medi-protoss who takes care of her while she’s all weak and dehydrated, and mentally drained because spending alone lost in space for a prolonged time did not go well on her with her very sociable personality.

Vi is a rather young and curious protoss and they get excited quite easily and they eagerly learn about the silly thing that is the human organism. Vi also upgrades Ruth’s bionic hand, maybe even with Karax’ help, and Ruth is surprised that she can now just take it on and off and that no surgery is needed to reconnect organic and artificial nerves and shit. Aaaand there even might be one of these energy blades hidden, waiting to be activated xD In which case, Ruth actually wants a switch for it because at this time she wouldn’t trust her mind to be able to control it o_O

Also, Ruth meets phase-smith Karax and asks for his help with the broken viking: “Come on, please! With my basic knowledge of this thing and your superior knowledge of… like, everything else, we should be able to get it working again!”

OT3 Headcanons

So here are some purely self-indulgent domestic headcanons nobody asked for with my crackship OT3 consisting of Ruth van de Graaff (Mass Effect OC), Sarah Kerrigan and Jim Raynor.

Sarah, Ruth and Jim have a house and everybody has their own apartment on a floor. Jim has his mancave in the basement, Ruth has the ground floor, and Sarah got the loft under the roof. So they can visit each other or keep to themselves as they like.

One day Kerrigan brings her Zergfriends for dinner. And Ruth has to say things like "no creep in the living room!"

Zagara: My Queen, aren't we going to strike and devour them?

Sarah: (in her gentle voice that she always uses when she teaches her Zergs) No, Zagara, these are my friends.

Zagara: Friends? What are friends?

Ruth: (cheerfully chimes in from the kitchen) Friends are people you don't kill and eat that's what they are.

Sarah: Yes. You thrive from their life presence, not their essence when they're dead.

Dehaka: (upon seeing Ruth) This one has strong essence. Want to collect.

Ruth: (stirring tomato sauce in a "License to grill" apron, produces a gun out of nowhere) Yeah I'll fight ya!

Sarah: Dehaka, Ruth, stop! No fighting indoors!

Dehaka and Ruth: (growl at each other, Ruth puts away her gun. They have a stare-down.)

Ruth: (dips her head to the side) Nice goatie. Could use a trim though....

Dehaka: (clicks his mandibles)

Ruth: (gets some scissors) May I?

They continue to stare at each other, Dehaka's mandibles twitching, Ruth with ready scissors. After a moment he bows down a bit and lets Ruth trim the goatie.

Ruth: (whispers) She said only no fighting indoors...

Dehaka: (looks at her and "smiles")

Ruth: (loud again, taking a step back in an artist’s pose, looking at her oevre) There, better.

Sarah: I can actually hear your thoughts, you know...

Jim: (comes up from the basement, indignant) Sarah, get those Zerglings out of the garage, they're eating the motorbikes!

Sarah: They're not eating them!

Jim:

Sarah: I have them on a healthy diet of freerange organic meat.

Jim continues to stare at her. She calls them back. They're now in the livingroom. Ruth starts to play with them bc everything is a puppy to her. There’s creep now all over the carpet.

So, above that’s Ruth, originally my Mass Effect OC in an AU with StarCraft influences (line art by @john-cousland​, 3D art by @elevanetheirin). For the mentioned post I migrated her completely into the StarCraft Universe ^_^ 

Ruth’s right (=main) hand got blown off in an accident and she got a bionic hand. I have to scratch the energy blade mentioned in the post, though, as these are powered by psionic energy which Ruth is incapable of. Still think the protoss upgrade will make her bionic hand much, much better :D

Musings

A/N: I wrote something,hurray! It’s for Ruth, inspired by this weeks Writing Challenge of the @thewritemoment for the theme “Various Forms of Love”.

Just some background up front to lessen possible confusion: This is set in a Mass Effect AU that has incorporated some characters and ideas from StarCraft.

Returning from her mental Cooking Zone, Ruth turned around from the small but functionable kitchen she had insisted on being installed aboard the Hyperion as soon as she had joined the Raiders. Since childhood she had always loved cooking and the peace it brought to her mind. She could zone out completely and revel in feeling, cutting, and smelling the ingredients - all for themselves and then together as the complete meal slowly took shape.

Wiping her hands on a cloth, she took a deep breath and returned her focus to the mess hall that was filled with some of the crew. Sunken into cleaning his handpistol, Ezra was there, her brother, whom she loved with all of a little sister’s might. He had always been her confidante, adviser and partner in crime. He had calmed her down when she was still afraid of monsters under the bed and he had helped her through the first heartbreak of her teenage years. She smiled when he threw a smile himself at Nova who sat down beside him with a bottle of weapon’s oil.

A bit in the back, Chuck the Pug was sunken into a game of tug-of-war with Tassadar. The little three-legged dog was a bundle of joy who loved everybody on board unconditionally. Of course not everybody loved him back, seeing him as a slobbering ugly little thing that shouldn’t even be allowed on a space ship. But he had his charm, and seeing the earnest, proud Tass open up to Mr. Squishyface, made Ruth’s smile a mile wider.

Suddenly Jim was beside her, and held a pot of steaming fresh chamomile tea under her nose. Just being close to him aroused her wildly and a hundred dirty little thoughts raced through her mind. Speaking from his smirk he knew exactly what was going on. Speaking from the bulge in his pants he had the exact same thoughts, too. She smirked back at him and took the mug with her left and only hand, and a thankful nod, and let the soothing smell of the tea quench her heat a bit. From the moment they met, their attraction to each other had been apparent to even the most oblivious people around. Yes, she loved his body, loved the strength of his big, tattooed arms, loved that he could flip her around as if she were a little paper doll. But lately she had noticed something else under all these, say, “carnal desires” - something small and quiet, like a little tug from one soul to another. Because there also was his strategic genius, his dry humour, his unrelenting will to do good even in the most rotten place, and maybe… maybe she loved all of that, too. Maybe she hadn’t acknowledged it yet because it would render her... vulnerable.

An unexpected gentle kiss on her hair brought her back, and with a sigh Ruth let herself lean on Jim’s front.

Maybe being vulnerable wasn’t that bad after all?

Miss Ladybug! :D There's been a lot going on with Ruth, and there's always new things to learn about her as I noticed when thinking about your questions, so thank you so much for sending them in!!! 💕

2. What is their dream vacation?

Ooooh, the girl loves some action, so she loves going places where she can have some good adrenaline rushes. Surfing, snowboarding, wingsuiting… anything that can accommodate her stump, or that she and brother Ezra could build a gadget for. She'd also be happy with a relaxed day on the beach, sipping fancy (but alcohol free!) cocktails, playing frisbee with her three legged black Space Pug Chuck and the rest of the Raiders* - but like, one chill day is enough, can we do something more exciting now please?

14. Do they like hot or cold temperatures better?

She usually excudes heat, so she feels more comfortable in cool temperatures. Too cold makes her stump sting, but she can deal with both temperature extremes.

18. What makes them laugh?

Puns! Slapstick! The blatant stupidity of underestimating her will and ability to kick ass and wipe the floor with it (Stump Fu is totally a thing! xD)

22. How do they react to criticism?

In her younger “Sturm und Drang” times she would have rolled her eyes, thinking “yeah, fuck you, too.”

Now** she's usually more open to criticism because she strives to be better. But her immediate reaction depends on the person delivering the criticism and how much she respects them, how they delivered it, and if they got her on the “right foot” - i.e. it might range from “Damn, really?” to “yeah, fuck you, too” to “AND STAY DOWN!” xD

In any case, she will continue to think on the points made, so see if they got any merit, and then probably talk about it with Ezra, and then try to change and do better.

** “now” means after several months of healing on Uncle Theo's farm because she really was out of order because she fell into a black pit of despair after she walked into a trap, lost her squad and had her bionic hand and her heart broken...
