Idk why but this song reminded me so much of you. It kinda made me sad. Just thinking about the things youve lost (I know it wasnt everything but still)

It does feel that fragile, love, you're right. Once you know how easily loss finds you, once you know how little effort it needs to pluck the illusions of security and safety from your arms, everything you love feels as substantial as smoke.

It really can all blow away with just a careless breath of fate.

The night is a time of reverie for Moonshadow Elves. It is when the precious lunabloom glows its soft light, and when children dance around the bonbon fires, and when the wee adoraburrs gather in on themselves, settling into the downy softness of one another’s comfort. 

Yet the night is no longer a time of peace for Ethari. It is now a time where Ethari is reminded that he is alone. 

It was challenging enough when Tiadrin and Lain left to fulfill their duty as Dragonguards, and his dearest friends entrusted their daughter in his care. It was like a piece of his heart was missing, but it was an opportunity to flourish in love. And while Rayla was rather reluctant at first, she grew to be like a daughter rather than just a favor for a friend. 

Then, the news of the failure…Taidrin and Lain’s disappearance. At first, he was skeptical of the news that they had simply failed and ran away.

There is no sign of any guard at the Spire was the rumor when the Moonshadow scouts returned. No sign of a struggle. The Prince’s egg - gone. Avizandum - turned to stone. And Zubeia…lost in her desperation. 

Regardless of what Ethari speculated, days went by…and with each passing sunset, the reality solidified. They were truly gone. Two lights - snuffed.

They were only the first.

What is the worst disagreement have you and Ethari had?

Not including anything regarding Rayla, cause I feel like she was likely a point of contention numerous times between you two.

Ethari once tried, early in our marriage, to gently nudge me toward another career path. I'd been spending a lot of time with Lain and Tiadrin, and Ethari saw how happy that made me. He just wanted more of that for me,so he suggested that I apply for a sentinel position. He felt sure that I'd get it. To him, the transit was only win/win.

But I was extremely offended and hurt by his blithe suggestion. I am good at what I do. This is my skill set. And this is my chosen path of protection - not only for all of Xadia, for those who might be forced to raise a hand against others, were I not here to do it.

Ethari said: be home more, carry less burden on your soul, see your friends more, live in less danger, and let me see you more often.

But all I heard was: some Xadians are worth less than others, I was foolish to try to protect everyone all at once, I was bad at my job, my skills were irrelevant, my husband was selfish, and he wanted more elves to stain their hands with death.

Our argument lasted for weeks. In retrospect, much of that was because I stubbornly refused to speak to him, or listen either.

Things got tense when he lost his patience and held me against a wall to make me listen, but he didn't yell at me. He cried, from the stress of feeling he'd misstepped so terribly.

The sight of his tears nearly broke me. I am never going to be ready to see my beloved weep. It'll never happen.

In my shaken state, I said some sharp things, but I did finally speak, and that brought the most beautiful smile to his face.

We still argued off and on for another few weeks, because neither of us could truly see the other's perspective. But we were talking again, and that was progress.

Finally, after many tears and slammed doors, we reached an understanding. He understands what my career means to me, and he accepts my sacrifice for others even as I must sacrifice others as well. And I allow myself to think, from time to time, of retiring with him and leaving these sacrifices to another willing soul. Because he assures me that one day it'll come to pass, and he wants me to be ready for that moment.
