We came up with these headcanons when we were first setting up the blog a year ago, so let's post a handful of muses' shower habits/quirks!

Tataru is the type to use all of the hot water, but since she pays for it she doesn't see any problem. She has a waterproof notepad for taking down designs, has no problem belting if she decides to sing, and talks at full volume/shouts at people outside the door if she thinks of something.

Estinien takes a minimalist, efficient approach to bathing -- essentially, what would have been taught in the Ishgardian military. Warm water, if any at all, is a luxury not often afforded. It's in and out with only a focus on combatting what could lead to infection or illness.

Y'shtola doesn't have any showering-related quirks, but she'll sit in a bath for an hour and zone out. If she gets a song stuck in her head enough, she'll likely hum it -- and be annoyed that she did.

Thancred does the 80's hand-on-the-wall shower because he is exhausted (or maybe hung over). Likely won't sing, either, unless someone is in there with him.

Urianger is an active thinker in the shower, often mumbling to himself as he ponders whatever is on his mind. He doesn't really think of his body while washing it.

Alphinaud is a singing-in-the-shower type! So long as he is in a good mood. He prefers his showers be heated, thank you; he will take one if it is not but he will be miserable. Also, Alisaie knows he sings in the shower, so he won't if he thinks she's in earshot and will make fun of him.

Alisaie sings in the shower, too, but not loud enough that anyone could actuallt hear her. She isn't too bothered by showers that lack hot water, so long as she gets clean. She always washes her hair (that's her rich girl thing) and has her own shampoo bar in her travel pack from home.

Krile would sing in the shower on occasion. She takes showers to feel clean and relax, but not overstay longer than necessary. She takes her time with the process and enjoys it.

Lyse is full-on tone deaf, happy singing in the shower. She acts out things and dances if there's room, and has full on arguments with herself in the shower out loud. Cleaning herself has to also be accompanied by an activity. She wouldn't mind communal bathing and isn't too hard-pressed about being nude in front of others (now that she's no longer disguised as Yda).

Ryne sings in the shower, but usually forgets the lyrics. While she can be efficient, she takes more time to herself post-Shadowbringers. She will quietly do the thing where one piles their hair high with shampoo against the wall and giggle to herself. Now that she has her own appearance, she has more interest in styling herself.

G'raha, as a young man, would commit himself to efficency. He's an adventurer (historian), so that means he would cold water showers in camp! It's part of the lifestyle! As the Exarch, especially as he gets older, he would take this private time to reflect and find himself partial to nice-smelling soap. As a Scion, he would continue these habits, and likely add in singing the latest song he heard while Probably in the Seventh Heaven bar outside the Rising Stones. His locs require a special rinse, so sometimes he'll have his head/ears wrapped in a scarf, which makes him sing really loud unintentionally. Alisaie hasn't picked on him for it...yet.

Ysayle does not sing in the shower, but she does stand under the water and relax. In her role as Lady Iceheart, she did the efficient-camp-shower situation, but takes her time now. She thinks ten minutes in the shower is being excessive. She does not shave.

Minfilia looks up at him curiously, attempting to mouth the words finding some feel the same as that of the pixies' language. When he finishes, he gives the young woman's hand a reassuring squeeze and smile. "It's a beautiful song, but why sing it to me? What does it even mean?"

"Same thing I sang to Sib once upon a time. Just something meant to calm the mind and a reminder that you're still coming into your own, Mhaighdean. You'll figure out the heroic stuff, just give it time and look to those around you."

since she was imprisoned so long, ryne's immune system was absolutely horrid upon leaving eulmore. she got a few colds but there was an instance where she got deathly sick and required urianger to monitor / heal her, which was also around the same time she really started feeling like they could all be family

ffxiv fic ideas that ping around my brain:

pre-shb thancred teaches ryne how to trap and skin a rabbit. and it's half about illustrating them living on the run & thancred teaching her survival skills. and half about the symbolism of it all. and ryne looking at the rabbit. this tug between "yes thancred interacting with me and teaching me, awesome i love positive attention" + "i love living out in the world and being Free" and... the rabbit, hungry and naive, baited into the trap. and thancred looking at ryne and trying to decide whether to have her be the one to kill it. or for him to kill this poor creature who just wanted to live, who he needs to die, in front of her. and they clean it, cook it, eat it, but when they go to sleep ryne can't get its shivering form and big glassy eyes out of her head. pre-shb urianger taking care of ryne for a month while thancred splits off to throw off a eulmoran tail. urianger and ryne hanging out and having an alright time. half about their relationship (the sweetness, but also the tough spots - urianger's role in ryne's existence (he is guilty about it, while he's the most normal adult in her life so her brain is incapable of being mad at him about it (or is it), ryne's mixed feelings about how thancred is always happier and relaxed and nicer when they're at the shelves (yay he's happy! vs i wish i got that all the time, i wish he thought me worth his best self) (in general there's a lot about the ghost of thancred in the room); half about them exploring the ruins of the bookman's shelves (i firmly believe there are underground cellars), its neighbors, and voeburt in general.

urianger childhood lore. i had some headcanons about him being raised by an old, frail, distant grandmother which got squished a little by ee3 but the new lore is in line with my hc that urianger was neglected as a child and tbh im delighted for confirmation. some stuff about the augerelt family in general. their house (smaller than many in journey's end) having rumors of being haunted. moenbryda. autism.

urianger, moenbryda, thancred, and y'shtola (plus yda?) as teens in old sharlayan, for whatever overlaps they had in the city as youths. i strongly believe that thancred & moenbryda were closer than thancred & urianger were as teens. i also think there's something with y'shtola being forced to leave the colony (and also being raised by y'shtola) and away from matoya and thancred's teenage years spent in Spy School (where they melt your brain) that could result in two really temperamental, angry, resentful teens. louisoix delegating moenbryda to try to be a good friend (good influence) to them, urianger getting taken along for the ride

Okay, okokok, I'm immediately removing any of my WoLships from the equation to create a slightly more balanced playing field X'D (in no particular order) vague spoiler warnings for shb/ew !

Thancred & Ryne - (immediately put face in hands) like do I even have to say? The father-daughter duo rips my heart out and I love them so so much and we were ROBBED when they didn't get to hug at the end of SHB gdi.

Emet-Selch & Hythlodaeus - serious x gremlin dynamic sustains me. Like I know Emet is dedicated to saving all of the Ancients and I respect that but the untold depth of personal anguish and motivation gets me every time.

Aymeric & Estinien - Whether as a romantic relationship or Just Friends, the little tidbits and glimpses we get into their friendship never fails to delight me.

Cid & Nero - Their divorced husband energy bewitches me.

Sidurgu & Rielle - Rather than 'father-daughter' this feels more 'older brother-sister' to me, or somewhere in a less definable 'found family' space in between. Either way I love them so much and how much they grow together through DRK quests and I miss them so much. 😭

Honestly this was so hard there are so many. Alphi and Alisaie are obvious choices, the Chai's, X'rhun and Arya, all of the Warriors of Darkness.

Also honorable mention: It's a bit too soon to say Erenville and Wuk Lamat, but it's definitely one I'm keeping my eye on because I love besties with the - _ - and [vibrating out of fleshbody with excitement] dynamic.

Thancred and Minfilia/Ryne tragic sibling relationships fuck me up Im constantly writing them already myself and getting to ShB and seeing the sort of "my sister died and Im looking after her kid" vibe Thancred and Ryne had going and how Ryne's relationship to Minfilia also REALLY felt to me like the kid who's mom died giving birth/when she was young and she only grew up hearing about her from everyone else I just-- damn that's some good dynamics

Q'ihnn Tia and G'raha Tia this was a joke initially, it was a "hey wouldnt it be funny if they were ex boyfriends" when I was running the raids and then I got to ShB and got hit over the head with THAT and well now they're getting married aha they're just really sweet and they deserve the happiness of being together

Zana and Alphinaud Leveilleur these two stupid teenagers are in love and they're adorable. I would die for them. I'd kill for them without hesitation. he immediately had a crush on her and she immediately threatened to kill him and then their character arcs just lined up in a way where they're inseparable now and I love em a lot, they're real cuties. also they're like a mini Q'ihnn and G'raha too which I always think is funny to have like father like daughter shit with Q'ihnn and Zana lmao

Kerrich Drachman and Ophianne Vilauclaire I actually hadn't thought about these two much until recently but the dynamic is deeply compelling to me now - Kerrich and his adoptive kids as a whole vibe was always only ever something I really thought about with Estinien and Q'ihnn, with all three of them being dragoons, but Ophianne is the kid MOST like him and also the one he just... kinda ignored. didn't worry about. he wasn't training her and she could handle herself, he didn't feel like he needed to worry about it, but now she's grown and she just... doesn't want anything to do with him. she never did, she never wanted a father figure even as a kid, but she certainly doesnt want one now. and Kerrich is my canon's 1.0 WoL so his entire dynamic with Bahamut is, well, complicated... and Ophianne is a summoner. in fact she's more closely tied to the actual dragon that was Bahamut than the primal. the symbolism alone in that in their relationship is driving me insane and im really gonna hammer into it going forward as much as I get the chance

7. Have they gone through any physical changes? What scars have they collected, and how do they feel about them? Did they sprout horns or other features as a result of spells or pacts gone wrong? How did light corruption impact them? Or have they walked away miraculously unscathed? Are they more peculiar for how eerily unmarred they are? 20. Are there any unique abilities that they possess outside of what's in-game? Are they actually a dragon, or do they see visions of the future? Or, is there a special way that their Echo manifests?

7. Suki has been changed! Most notably, when Emet made her physical in Elpis, he gave her the same irises that Ancients do by accident, and she still has them.

Regarding her scales, they were once white like Atsutsune’s, but I haven’t quite decided how they take on the multicolors she has now. For now, I’m going to tentatively say her scales change colors when she assassinates the leader of the cult she grew up in (I still need to write that lore post…) post-Stormblood. Regarding her light corruption, for now she only has white streaks in her hair, but I might elaborate and add stuff as I work through details of her backstory.

Atsutsune has minor battle scars due to fighting alongside his sister. I actually am toying with the idea that Suki is aetherically sensitive in some way, and would have become a sin eater much easily than the average WoL were it not for Ryne helping Atsutsune siphon some of the light aether, so I’m working on his physical changes as well.

Apollo has plenty of long-faded scars, likely acquired in the Autumn War or while he was in Meracydia, but I haven’t quite mapped those out yet. Since he prefers to avoid large-scale battles, he hasn’t acquired anything new.

20. Suki has the ability to turn into a primal. Again, I’ll have to elaborate on this in a lore post, but turning people into primals was how the leader of the cult she grew up in lengthened his lifespan. She’s never done this and never will, but it is interesting to explore AUs where she becomes the primal Izanami and her allies are forced to kill her.

Apollo isn’t a wol, so compared to Suki he’s just above average. (He doesn’t have the Echo, for instance.) But in comparison to your average bard, Apollo is incredibly skilled and has come up with his own battle moves. I actually HC that since Suki isn’t a bard, Apollo did the bard questline we see in game, just changed slightly due to him already being a bard. So he has all in-game bard abilities, as well as a few unique ones. None of them are very realistic, but I nerf Apollo in other ways, so :3

(Atsutsune is just a samurai. He can keep up with Suki and the Scions, but that’s about it.)

Thematic Headcanons || Accepting!

😨 for a fear-themed headcanon

When she was a child, Ryne had been the type to curl up and/or freeze when confronted with something that frightened her. Throughout her time spent with Thancred and the events of Shadowbringers, she was empowered to fight against her fears, although she would remain haunted by insecurities for some time.

By Endwalker, Ryne has become significantly more brave when it comes to frightening situations. She is able to feel her fear, but then step back from it and analyze what exactly is causing that feeling. It helps her to move forward and offer her assistance, even if the situation is unpredictable.

📔 for a reading-themed headcanon

Thancred and Urianger (mostly Urianger) helped teach her how to read. Being uneducated and dependent on her jailers was one of the big reasons she had been locked away in Eulmore, after all. Thancred did his best with the basics, but lacked the patience necessary to be a decent teacher. Once they reunited with Urianger, he gladly took the lead in helping Ryne catch up on what she had missed out on. After seeing her succeed, Thancred was better able to assist in her practicing of reading when they were on the road (i.e pointing out signposts), rather than be the educator himself.

After returning to her original hair color, Ryne became far more interested in styling and taking care of it. She even asked Alisaie what she did for her beauty routine, and of course would later bother Gaia as well. She has been contemplating cutting it short or maybe even dyeing it a fun color! But she's still too intimidated by a big change. Maybe one day she'll work up the courage, though.

(1) Dulia-Chai & Chai-Nuzz

Do I really have to explain why I love them? No? I will anyway.

I love love love seeing a happy, healthy marriage in media. Especially when they could've been treated like the typical sitcom marriage of "miserable man run roughshod by his overbearing wife." Nope! Dulia believes in her husband wholeheartedly, supports him, pushes him to succeed when his anxieties threaten to lock him up in place. Chai-Nuzz clearly adores her, lets her push him when he needs it, and looks to her for support and confidence. They're happy together, they're good to each other, and they accept each other, not blindly, but with an awareness of each other's faults that is accepting and loving and supportive.

(2) Feo Ul & the Warrior of Light

Yes, the WoL gets manipulated by the little lunatic. Yes, Feo Ul had how many layers of Plans™ prepared to yank into action at a moment's notice. Yes, we have to suck up like crazy when we need their help.

And I absolutely love it. I love that they're fascinated by mortals, that they appreciate the beauty of a brief, brilliant life. It charms me to hear them call the Warrior of Light "our sapling" while scolding the WoL for being so neglectful. They're charming and funny and demented and I just love it.

(3) Hades & Hythlodaeus (& Azem)

We don't get much of this (not nearly enough) and a lot of what we do get is subtext, a short story by SE, and what little encounters we have with the two Ancients in Endwalker.

And honestly, I can see why Hades would spend aeons mourning the love he lost after that. Having not one but two people who know you so deeply, who can tease you out of a bad mood when you don't necessarily want to be happy but oh well, they're there now, and then losing them? One to what he felt was his highest duty and the other to a disagreement that spiraled into losing them forever?

I'd be mourning that for the rest of my days, too.

(4) Annalei & Seifer d'Latu

Well, the ask doesn't say it can't be RP characters!

They're terrible, and I love them. They're absolutely atrocious people with basically no redeeming qualities, and I love them. They've fought each other tooth and nail for years, have killed each other's lovers, refused to admit how they felt, competed with each other in basically everything, fought back to back, side by side, and with each other all with equal fervor.

Anna is a psychopathic bitch and Seifer is a manipulative, sadistic jackass. They're horrible apart, worse together, and would bring on another Calamity for each other without hesitation. Neither would leave the other behind, even while teasing (in Seifer's case) or complaining (in Anna's) about having to help the other.

I find them endlessly inspiring, fascinating, and a little terrifying.

(5) Thancred Waters & Urianger Augurelt

...they're married, I'm sorry, I can't be persuaded otherwise.

And not even necessarily in a romantic sense (although I'd 100% believe it) but in that they are life partners and friends and support each other, tease each other, have worked together enough to know how to offset each other's weaknesses. It doesn't surprise me at all that they're always pairing up to go adventure.

Wouldn't you choose someone who knew you almost better than you know yourself to be your support, protection, and companionship on an adventure?

(Also c'mon, they're Ryne's dads! IT'S SO OBVIOUS. THEY'RE SO MARRIED.)

r,yne is so incredibly strong and brave it boggles me mind at times. i really think the consequences / anguish of being a captive truly hit her once she was removed from that setting. she was too busy living in constant survival mode to consider her fear abnormal to a point -- leading to quite a few moodswings for the first year with t,hancred especially. she was still in survival mode but he protected her, shared the burden. for the most part tho ?? she was such a happy kid, excited to see flowers and new things she never has. heckin brave

Top 5 Relationships (romantic, familial, canon, HC, whatever!)

1. Alphinaud and Alisaie - the devs really know how to do siblings right. The twins remind me so much of myself and my own sibling, its just too cute.

2. My group of WoLs in their universe are also so precious to me. They make up the light party that pretty much goes throughout the entire story. Their interactions (which is entirely in my head currently.) are delightful, between humble Yasha, to arrogant Jana, mirthful A'tyla to dour Eulanne. If I had more time (and energy) I'd properly write out their version of the story.

3. Ryne and Gaia - Ryne was already one of my favorite characters ever, Gaia however took till the third arc of Eden to win me over. But now they are just two little cuties that are maybe a thing? With their ages I doubt we will get a concrete answer, but all the signs say yes.

4. The Mandervilles + Nashu - Really just everything to do with Hildibrand and his misadventures. Its just him and his ever faithful, explosive happy assistant, and occasionally his mum and dad come help. They are just too funny, and they are also still functional? Like you can feel the love and affection they all feel for each other.

5. Whatever the hell Sanson and Guydelot have going on. (Bard was my first job to level until Dancer came along. And these two dumb gays make me so happy. Even if they haven't canonically got together yet..... THEY FUCKING GAY YO!!!)

I've mentioned before, but my Emet's true self is significantly larger and more fucky than we see in game. Firstly, we'll cover his physically detectable self.

The form we see in phase two is a decent basis. However, my Emet in that form is as large to ancients as he is to mortals ingame- aka, he's roughly three times larger than his ingame model. In addition, he is very much not just the head, shoulders, and arms we see- he's got a full body, with two to four (it changes, his form is ever shifting) sets of arms we can see connected to his body, and a multitude of spectral hands where the arms either don't directly connect to what we can see of his body or do but are not within the visible range of light. He's also got two sets of legs, the larger pair of which is digitigrade and similar to his larger set of arms in terms of design elements.

Outside of that, his smaller set of arms is larger, he has several pairs of eyes and they are not limited to his face, and he has a massive mouth full of sharp, rib-like teeth and a very long, tentacle-esque tongue where his stomach should be, along with another mouth behind the tentacles on the lower part of his face (yes, those are tentacles, sort of, I don't have a better word) and one in his lower throat. He also has golden rings of multicolored eyes and multiple pairs of white wings to offset all the black, purple, and deep red elements of his design, and a mass of tentacles, limbs, and shadows starting where his hair would be and going all the way down his spine, even partially down the outer parts of his larger sets of legs and arms.

When not transformed, all of that aether obviously can't fit inside his little mortal body. It's folded in on itself to create an even more incomprehensible mess of tucked in limbs and eyes, and it sprouts in and out of his body, crawling after and around him or flowing out of him upward into wisps. To anyone with soulsight or similar it sort of looks like this horrible picture of a bird holding her babies, except it's very not babies, it's just him looking supremely fucked up, and there's also just a ton of strange twisting mist and smoke and aura and hands and Bad. Emet doesn't tend to think about this because he can't see it clearly in the mirror without effort.

And even outside of this, this isn't actually the limit of his power. Because if it was, Emet wouldn't have been able to recreate Amaurot. Especially when I hc that the Amaurot dungeon was created on a whim right before we entered it because he got pissed and impulsively wanted to make us understand what we were asking of him. Doing so weakened him significantly, and took out a large chunk of his aether stores- but even with that, it took all the excess light in the first- enough to eventually doom and destroy the entire continent of Norvrandt- to destroy him, along with the help of both the scions and the summoned warriors of other shards. Think about that. That's so much.

Emet had enough within him to create an entire section of city full with both frightened amaurotine spectres and incredibly powerful monsters on a whim, after already (admittedly over time) creating a city so massive that when we float over it we can't see the end of it on the horizon, and it still took enough aether to eventually doom a continent to kill him. And I hold some suspicions that he was ready to go and could have fought harder if he'd wanted to- he let go because with that final blow he realized that we were strong enough to entrust the star to.

All this to say EMET IS FUCKING MASSIVE. HIS AMBIENT AETHER IS HUGE. To the point that someone with the right powerset could sense him from miles away not unlike Ryne senses the lightwardens, but on a larger scale (but also more imprecise due to said scale). To beings that can sense him, he becomes just a vague background knowledge, easily dismissed as simply an aspect of the aether around them, until they get close enough- half a mile perhaps, or maybe closer, I am very bad at judging distance- to hit the point on the bell curve where you realize something is very, very wrong, and it doesn't take long even within that distance to realize that it's far worse than a normal primal, too.

I currently have a thread in which someone in a large three story mansion realizes they're actually inside Emet, who arranged this space for his and their comfort and convenience inside the densest parts of his aetheric body between shards. He's fucking terrifying. Holy shit. Emet's moving castle but he is the castle and he is god and he is so so scary. I love him.

hc that amaya did not allow ryne to become the vessel for shiva, but knowing ryne wanted to prove herself they stepped into the role & challenged her for a sparring match. which went fine at first.  though their form showed that they still feel sorrow for the deaths during the dragonsong war, they were in control

...until they were not & turned into a form closer to hydaelyn. in contrast to ryne, amaya already shows the proper wings & halo due to azem's memories slowly returning.
