Solange Knowles is a woman of many talents, so it is no surprise that she takes the spotlight for this week’s Woman Crush Wednesday.
When you are born and given the name Solange, you are destined for creativity. It is said that people with this name often have an inner desire to create and express themselves in some public format, whether it is speaking, acting, writing or singing. Solange checks off all of the above. She is a singer/songwriter with four albums under her belt. Her latest album, A Seat at The Table earned her a grammy win for best R&B single, Cranes in the Sky. This bossbabe also heads her own record label, Saint Records which she started in 2013. Her many talents extend far beyond music though. They include acting, modeling, fashion design and my favorite fashion blogging. Check out her blog here!
As for her design efforts, Solange collaborated with the Australian label C/MEO Collective last Spring via her Saint Heron e-commerce site. This was the first collection with promise of another, so fingers crossed, more will be coming soon. The collection is still available here.
When we dress ourselves, we all normally have a favorite color to wear. It’s a color that our closets tend to be full of, because we feel safe in it, confident in it…some may even call it our “power color.” There isn’t the case when it comes to Solange. She looks amazing in everything. While the rest of us dare to dip a toe into the monochromatic pool of one solid color, we tend to lean towards black or white, because it’s easy. For Solange, the bolder , the better, so she goes for orange, cobalt blue, emerald green, red and her signature yellow. She even somehow manages to make neutrals such as beige and blush tones look bolder than ever.
She is the queen of colorblocking and pattern play. She makes unexpected color pairings look like they were always meant to be. She is just that good.
If you take anything from this week’s WCW, let her inspire your own sense of style. Don’t be afraid to try something new. There is always one piece of advice that I tell my friends when they ask…it is to never be afraid of color. I tell my friends to always opt to wear color to a wedding. I think so many have gotten into this rut of playing it safe with black. Yes, it is true that black is universally flattering, but why play it safe, when you were born to stand out. Take a page from Solange’s book….BE BOLD.
