Just wanted to say something about saltburn and this imagery in particular
Tumblr media
I know a lot of people have made a link with the Minotaur at the center of the maze, but to me the fact that he’s wearing antlers and not horns makes me think it’s more of a wendigo analogy.
The wendigo also suits Oliver a lot, the idea of the wendigo is unquenchable thirst, hunger and obsession.
A person usually becomes a wendigo after practicing cannibalism, and no we don’t see Oliver eat anyone, but we do see him eat a lot of their fluids (farleigh describes the vampire scene as Venetia and Oliver “almost eating each other”).
And after their transformation, they have a desire to kill and eat their victims, and leading the people they haunt to kill and eat each other. The more they kill, the more powerful they get, and they can even end up transforming their victims into wendigos themselves. Most of the legends concerning wendigos are about isolation, greed and selfishness, and the need of people to belong to a community.
So yeah that was my take on Oliver’s costume.
And as for this guy
Tumblr media
He just thinks he’s in baz lurhmanns Romeo and Juliet but his Romeo can’t drink the poison with him anymore because he’s already turned into a monster.
Anyway there’s SO MUCH to say about this movie, but my biggest take away was the “villain monologue” scene from Oliver, that was honestly so unnecessary. I think this movie would’ve been so much better to me if that scene wasn’t there and if fennell just left us a bit to interpret ourselves, but that’s just my opinion. The rest was really good, and now I’m down to see any movies in which the art direction team has worked because every single shot was beautiful.

Like barbie was a good movie and I enjoyed it but it's so annoying to see people act like it's the greatest movie ever made or that it's the epitome of feminism

Costume Design: Too Close To Call
Tumblr media
The nominees are:
Barbie
Killers of the Flower Moon
Napoleon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
Barbie vs. Bella: Part 2… or 1, depending on which award gets handed out first. This one might be even more challenging to call than the already-tight Production Design category.
At the Costume Designers Guild Awards last month, Barbie and Poor Things were in different categories (unlike ADG where they were in the same category). Both won their respective categories, making this one a complete toss-up.
Congratulations to the other films for making it this far, but none of you have a chance. And if you’re betting on this year’s results, might as well flip a coin.
Who will win: Barbie
But look out for: Poor Things
Who I’d vote for: Poor Things
If I could add one more: Saltburn

i want to talk about the birthday party and what felix's costume actually means to me. my first impression was that he was just too cool to put in any effort especially in his own home, that's just the felix way, he doesn't try, right? but as ive been suffering from saltburn brainrot this entire time I've now realised that felix LOVES fancy dress, he loves to dress up, he's silly and boyish and whimsical like that. he dresses up for christmas runs, he wears a very detailed outfit in the fancy dress flashbacks, he's absolutely ridiculous and loving it when he celebrates oliver after exams.
then the truth about oliver comes out. felix is so devastated he cannot be bothered in the slightest to do a thing he clearly loves. but he still has to make an appearance. he still has to pretend that oliver is his friend. a thing you have to know about felix is he would rather die than make a scene. he will comply with the unspoken rules at saltburn but he will not be enjoying it at all. i truly don't believe he thought he was an angel or a god or a romantic figure in that moment at all.
he was a stupid boy that had his heart broken and fished out a pair of cheap, spray painted wings and just wanted to get through the rest of the night.
interestingly enough the costume designer had some similar things in mind:
Tumblr media
"did he have another costume planned? maybe he did."
hmmm!

saltburn x shakespeare, a character and costume analysis 🧚🏼‍♂️🕸️🍾
Tumblr media
because this movie isn’t that good, but god is it pretty. this is not an attempt to make the film appear more brilliant than it is—the script and direction does that just fine without my help. it is, however, a testament to the costume design and my own adoration of shakespearean influence in media. so many spoilers under the cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
despite being the romeo type, elordi’s felix is cast as juliet, embodying clare danes’ iconic 1996 costume. but while juliet’s wings and white dress signal purity and innocence, felix’s wings are more ‘the fallen angel’ by alexander canabel. he is also the only main character not directly drawing from the party’s theme, dressing from the wrong play. considering he ends up dead, maybe this wasn’t the best plan—stick to the dress code folks. his manner of death (poisoning) also matches the death of romeo, driven to suicide at the supposed loss of his lover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
farleigh is bottom, the hapless (terrible) actor who ends up the butt of a fairy’s practical joke and complicated politics. despite being in the family, farleigh is always an outsider, a donkey in fairy court. this costume is also hilariously literal when you think abt it
Tumblr media
rosamund pike beautifully embodies the fairy queen titania, which i think is perfect for her: someone who appears regal and untouchable, but easily succumbs to pride and petty gossip at the slightest opportunity.
Tumblr media
barry keoghan’s oliver quick is our robin goodfellow, or puck. puck is the one who moves all the pieces in ‘midsummer,’ from enchanting the lovers to cursing bottom, just as oliver is the mastermind behind the downfall of the cattons. it’s also a visual fake-out, as the deer antlers give the impression of him being a prey animal out of his element, when really he’s the most in control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while less explicitly shakespearean, venetia’s spiderweb dress, dotted with dewdrops and complete with a spider hanging down the open back is a reference to verses of ‘midsummer’ such as act 2 scene 1: ‘and i serve the fairy queen, to dew her orbs upon the green,’ and act 2 scene 2, ‘weaving spiders come not here,’ all lines spoken by fairies in service of titania.

Hello again! Please elaborate on why you don’t like Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) I love hearing people go off and I think I’ll agree with your conclusion since I don’t like it either haha
HI thanks for sending this as an ask!! Here's a very long, convoluted response. Warning: it is not proofread.
So, the main reason I don't like Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) is because of accuracy. Now, I am completely fine when a book-to-film adaptation isn't a perfect recreation of the book (frankly thats impossible imo) but MAN does this adaptation do the original book injustice. The romance between Dracula and Mina?? The plot line about Dracula's dead wife? Renfield originally working with Harker?? MINA ATTEMPTING TO SEDUCE VAN HELSING???? Really, most of the injustice is done to Mina as a character. Book!Mina is such a strong, well written character. She is integral to the plot and to the book's structure (we would not have had all of the letters, newspaper clippings, and diary entries without her). The book itself states this with how often the Dude Squad (I think I got that title from an Overly Sarcastic Productions video, im going to keep using it) directly tell Mina that they could not have defeated Dracula without her. She is resilient, smart, and stands up for herself. 1992!Mina is not this. James V. Hart, who wrote the screenplay, took everything that made Mina Mina and created a stereotypical damsel character. It's a shame because I strongly believe that Winona Ryder could play a killer, book-accurate Mina Harker.
Speaking of who plays the characters... the cast is really hit or miss for me personally. I do think Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins are good picks (especially based off of the book portrayals) and I remember liking Cary Elwes as Arthur Holmwood. Tom Waits as Renfield is a pretty inspired choice ngl.
But. Keanu. Don't get me wrong, I love Keanu Reeves. I think he is great in Bill and Ted's and John Wick. But that's why it confuses me as to why he was cast in this film. He can't do the accent, he shows no emotion, and it sounds like he is remembering his lines as he says them. In fact, my family and I quote his lines in this film as a joke all the time ("Is the castle far?"). None of his former roles at the time implied that he would be a good Jonathan either.
I can't remember much of Gary Oldman's performance, I just know I didn't like it lmao. He made Dracula too suave when he's really just a Creature.
Note: in looking up the cast I was reminded that Richard E. Grant plays Seward and as a fan of Saltburn (2023) that is just. hilarious to me.
I only went into this movie because I was told I would like it because the production design was pretty. Honestly? It's not. The film is poorly lit and the costumes are questionably accurate. The few shots I can remember are for the wrong reasons- such as that One Scene with Lucy in the cemetery. I won't get into it much more, it makes me extremely uncomfortable, but its another instance of Bram Stoker's Dracula taking away everything that made the female characters interesting.
Honestly? The best thing I can say about this movie is that it included Quincey. He's my favorite and he usually doesn't make it to screen adaptations. I'm happy you're here buddy.
I think what infuriates me is the title. Bram Stoker's Dracula implies that this adaptation takes a lot from the book. It's not just Dracula, it's Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's like saying that this adaptation is the most faithful. But... it's not. Bram Stoker's Dracula takes more of it's inspiration from old Universal films and previous Dracula adaptations than it does from the actual book. Thats okay! I'm all for new interpretations of old stories. But if you're a new interpretation that changes half of the characters and plot, don't market said interpretation with the original authors name.
This is not Bram Stoker's Dracula, it's Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula.
Which, even then, this is weak for Coppola. I'm not a huge fan of his work (I've seen The Godfather and Apocalypse Now) but I can understand and appreciate why he is as influential as he is. I think his films are well written and beautifully shot. He has great casts who elevate the writing and make their characters memorable. This film goes against all of that and that bothers me so much. It feels like a cheap imitation of Coppola's work.
Anyway- that sums up my thoughts on Bram Stoker's Dracula. I reallt enjoyed writing this, as someone who wants to be a film historian but doesn't actually get to do film-deep dives this was pretty refreshing haha. Good reminder that this is a film blog, not a podcast one.
Feel free to ask me more about movies, especially if you like Dracula! I am of the opinion that there is no good adaptation of Dracula... but I have ideas on how to fix that so...

siantmiller: POOR DEAR PAMELA played by Carey Mulligan in Emerald Fennell's @saltburnfilm
Hair and Make-Up Design
Supporting Pamela's vaguely masked misfortune, uncomfortably dressed from breakfast through to bedtime, my start point was the hair.
It had to be red! Bold, out-there, a statement. Long enough, but not so as to compete with her clothes, soft but structured, kooky and eye catching. And it needed to work in the 'red' room when we first see Pamela in Saltburn.
Karen Elson sprang to mind, with a pinch of Kate Bush and Florence Welch. Via Zoom, I met Carey during her filming commitments to Maestro, and discussed my mood board looks, Due to availability, our 1st and final fitting would be the day before filming.
Carey's fabulous wig maker Jessica Lalande, sent me some colour samples to try out in the sets and against the costumes from Costume Designer, Sophie Canale. Once chosen, the wig was made, uncut, with plenty of length to work with.
The make-up look was partly inspired by a Chanel campaign from 2007, our story setting. Further to this; looks with similar tones, which defined the eyes plus a hint of the 30's. Adding a wine coloured lip stain and super dark wine nails, which were pre-prepped and stuck on. I wanted Carey's brows to be well defined below her mid-forehead fringe, and with a touch of over extension. The roundedness of the eye makeup lending itself to her wide eyed, naive, doll like and slightly sorrowful demeanour.
The tattoo designs have a deliberately hand-drawn quality, done by me using a Blackwing Matte pencil on cartridge paper, developed for in-house printing with ProCreate.
These were inspired by many things including, Amy Winehouse, Russian mob ring tattoos, and nightmares of losing her teeth - which I took from Pamela's historical drug dependency. The Damien Hurst Pharmacy-era capsule tattoo, stems from a back story Carey and I devised, which references a past relationship Pamela had with a rock star from The Verve 'R•ash'. The 'Lucky' horseshoe is my nod to @luckychap
Brilliant application by
