Cold comfort
Tumblr media
By Steve Pratt    28th November 2013   (X)
CHARLIE COX is no stranger to period projects with movies The Merchant Of Venice with Al Pacino, Casanova alongside Heath Ledger, and Stardust opposite Claire Danes, as well as TV series Boardwalk Empire to his name.
The one-off 1970s espionage thriller Legacy might be another period piece, but he is at least moving forward through the decades. “It’s the most modern I have ever done,” he says.
Based on the novel by Alan Judd, the story is set in 1974 in the middle of the Cold War, when Cox’s character, Charles, joins MI6 as a trainee spy. “He has come from the Royal Engineers, which means he would have been posted in Belfast in the mid-1960s, and the back story we have mostly invented is that he was in the bomb disposal unit and probably lost his best friend,” says Cox.
“Because of that, he wanted to become more involved in what is referred to as ‘the front line of the war’, be it the Cold War or Northern Ireland, and saw the move to MI6 as being part of that.”
He is still training when asked to revive his former friendship with Viktor Koslov (Andrew Scott), a Russian diplomat he knew at university, with a view to “turning” him. But Viktor has his own agenda and reveals a shocking truth about Charles’ family that threatens to derail him personally and professionally.
“Andrew Scott happens to be one of my favourite actors of all time,” says Cox of the Olivier Award-winning star, who plays Moriarty in the Sherlock series.
“I had never met him, but we have the same agent, and I got his number and sent a text saying, ‘I really hope we get to work with each other’. Six months later, this came up.”
He knows another of his co-stars, Romola Garai, who plays fellow agent Anna, extremely well because he introduced her to his best friend, Sam Hoare, and the two now have a daughter together.
“Before I found out she was going to be doing it, I got a text from him saying, ‘Buddy, you’re going to be kissing my wife’.” Cox says.
In preparation, Cox watched “a few cool documentaries about the period” and understands the enduring fascination with the Cold War. “The fact that there wasn’t any actual fighting [in the West] is really intriguing,” he says.
“And I know in my life, impending doom is so much worse than something actually happening, because when it does, you can rationalise it in some way and take some action. “But when you are waiting for something that could happen, your mind goes into all the different scenarios, and living with that [creates] a sense of vulnerability.”
He has a small but pivotal role in a movie with the working title Dracula Untold under way. “Yes, more vampires, obviously we are not bored of them yet – or maybe we are,” he says. “I am only doing two scenes, but it is a bit different for me, very evil. He is described as the father of all vampires. Other than that, I am not sure what’s coming up.”
Maybe something contemporary? “Oh yeah,” says Cox. “I’d love to say ‘Mate’ in a movie.”

New details about the updated release of Pet Shop Boys Catalogue (2006) are now available on the Thames & Hudson website. At the moment, it seems like this new version is tentatively coming out April 9th, 2024. It will include Catalogue's information in addition to all the visual material since 2006 up to 2024. It is titled Pet Shop Boys Volume.
It will be 560 pages with a new foreword and introduction alongside Philip Hoare's essay from Catalogue.
Description of the book from the website:
The Pet Shop Boys—Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—are arguably the most successful duo in the history of pop music. Three-time Brit Award winners and six-time Grammy nominees, they have sold more than 50 million records worldwide. Published to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of the release of “West End Girls”—the single that reached number one in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Israel, New Zealand, and Norway— Pet Shop Boys Volume is the definitive catalog of the group's visual output to date.
Newly reconfigured into a literary format, this revised and expanded edition now chronicles the entire visual output of Pet Shop Boys from 1984 to 2024. It includes the sleeve artworks and packaging; stills from every video, film, and performance; stage sets and costumes; photoshoots; publications; and merchandise. Photographs, designs, and productions by celebrated collaborators, including Mark Farrow, Wolfgang Tillmans, Martin Parr, Bruce Weber, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Zaha Hadid, and Derek Jarman, among others, are accompanied by short commentaries and captions by music writer Chris Heath. Accompanying the essay by Philip Hoare on Pet Shop Boys' practice, is a new introduction by Libby Sellers discussing the importance of Pet Shop Boys to the history of design, and a foreword by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller reflecting on the enduring impact of the music and image of Tennant and Lowe.

More of those Harrovian Traditions:
Squash, (known originally in Harrow-speak as 'Squasher'), now an international sport, was invented at Harrow School around 1830, out of the older game, Rackets; Harrow being not only the first school to play Rackets, but also the first to build a covered court for the game.
The basic requirements for Rackets is a piece of flat land and a high wall. The enlargement of Bill Yard in 1821, made a perfect place for the game. The Fifth and Sixth Forms played against the west wall of Old Schools, while the rest of School used the high south wall of the Yard that backs onto Druries.
'Courts' for this developmental form of the game played in the Yard had all sorts of hazards, such as chimneys, drainpipes, and net-covered windows (to protect the windows from being broken), requiring some complicated rules. The absence of side and back walls was compensated by 'Rackets Fags', who were designated ball-stopping and collecting duties.
The game was played with cut-down tennis racquets and leather-covered balls, referred to as 'Best Fives' (sold on The Hill by a Mrs Arnold; known to the boys as 'Old Polly').
Two new courts, known as the Shell and V Form Courts, were built below the Milling Ground. Both were 'open' (the V Form having just one sidewall), and Sam Hoare (Custos), took over the supply of balls and became an unofficial rackets coach.
Famous Old Harrovian, Sir William Hart-Dyke (The Grove; 1851), was not only the School's first Rackets champion, but was also chiefly responsible for the construction of the closed and covered courts in 1865.
Not familiar with Harrow? Hart-Dyke's court adjoined the V Form court, just down the hill from its west side, and although its dimensions are slightly larger than those that later became 'standard', it's still in use today.
Always time for one more tradition: Charles Williams, Harrow's Rackets Pro from 1909 – 22, achieved fame by surviving the Sinking of the Titanic; the Titanic had a squash court, and Williams was working-his-passage by coaching during the voyage!

Famous Old Harrovians:
Born in London on 24 February, 1880, Samuel John Gurney Hoare, 1st Viscount Templewood, GCSI, GBE, CMG, PC, JP (more commonly, Sir Samuel Hoare), was a senior British politician who served in the Conservative and National Governments of the 1920s and 1930s.
As Secretary of State for India, Sir Samuel authored the Government of India Act of 1935, which granted provincial-level self-government to India. Though he is perhaps most famous for serving as Foreign Secretary, when, in 1935, he authored the so-termed Hoare-Laval Pact, thereby partially recognising the Italian conquest of Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia); the ensuing public outcry forcing his resignation.
Sir Samuel, along with Stanley Baldwin (also a fellow Old Harrovian), was seen as a leading 'Appeaser to Hitler'; his removal from office, along with Sir John Simon, and the removal of Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister, a condition of the Labour Party's agreement to serve in a coalition government in May 1940.
*
A Clash of Harrovians:
Ill feeling between Sam Hoare and Winston Churchill (perhaps the greatest Old Harrovian of all time), reached its peak in April 1934, when Churchill accused him of having, with the aid of the Earl of Derby, breached parliamentary privilege by improperly influencing the Manchester Chamber of Commerce to drop its opposition to the India Bill.
Hoare was exonerated by the Committee on Privileges, though Churchill subsequently gave a powerful speech in the Commons Chamber attacking the committee's findings.
On 13 June, 1934, Leo Amery (also an Old Harrovian), spoke, arguing that Churchill's true aim was to bring down the government under the cover of the doctrine 'fiat justicia ruat caelum' ('may justice be done, though the heavens fall').
Churchill, who was neither a lawyer nor a classicist, growled 'translate it!'
To howls of laughter, Amery replied that it meant 'If I can trip up Sam, the Government's bust!'
Sir Samuel Hoare died in his London home at 7 Eaton Mansions, on 7 May, 1959. He was buried at Sidestrand parish churchyard in Norfolk.
As his marriage was childless and his brother had pre-deceased him, the baronetcy and peerage became extinct upon his death. His widow, Viscountess Templewood, died in 1962.
