so can i finally share my cressida lesbian headcanon 🥺

i know, i know she’s a bully.

if only there was a character who was super femme and was mean because she spent her whole life denying who she truly was and only finds true happiness when she comes to terms with being a lesbian

this excerpt from a PRIDE article is what made me think this could become canon

Jess said that she wants to bring queerness to the forefront in this series. one of the bridgertons could be queer, but seeing as they all end up in straight pairings i feel like it is more likely to be someone outside the family (though i am a fan of bi benedict)

along with this cressida has had an unusual amount of presence in the bridgerton promotions this season versus seasons 1 & 2. we’re also supposed to be seeing more of cressida’s home life which i assume will not be good.

my thought process is that like most of the girls in the ton she is being forced to find a man with a high enough rank regardless of whether she loves him or not. but cressida has always seen this as a means to an end. everytime we see her going after a man, it’s for the money or perception. if she married the prince she’d be a princess, if she married lord featherington she’d be rich (no one knew he was lying remember), and if she married colin she’d be a bridgerton and they are basically as close to royalty as one can get without marrying into the actual royal family. it has never been about love for her.

i mean read this quote and tell me it isn’t cressida coded.

next season we see cressida once again going after a wealthy man, lord debling and he seems to be quite the catch. he is also extremely interested in penelope, not cressida.

i wonder if we’ll have a little polly honeycombe moment moment and she’ll have this realization with a girl she meets in the ton.

New Directions Tournament Masterpost

favorite thing about them

She has such a big heart and is genuinely so sweet and caring and is ride-or-die as fuck for the people she cares about. Also she's just so fucking funny and she has these ditzy moments that are so comedically underrated.

least favorite thing about them

I don't like when the writers would use her to air grievances about cast members (but I also think "every time you so much as cooked macaroni and cheese together or farted" is funny and I'm sorry but I can't help but laugh every time I hear that). I also didn't like the dodgeball thing from s3 because it felt like the writers trying to justify Finn outing her (which absolutely isn't justified at all and I hate that there's still people in the fandom trying to act like it was). Also just like with Brittany's 'angry lesbians' comment, I didn't like the whole 'you need a 100% Sapphic goddess' conversation and the biphobia, especially considering it required two actual bi people (Naya and Demi) to utter those words (yikes).

I wish she could have stood up for herself a bit more when the feud with Rachel was resolved (because yeah maybe she took it too far but it wouldn't have gone there if Rachel hadn't overreacted to begin with).

idk if I'd necessarily say "least favourite" more than "most noticeable flaw" but she tends to spiral when she doesn't have control of a situation, which leads to things like the whole Artie situation and later the whole leprechaun thing.

(also ... again more of a "most noticeable flaw" thing than anything else I think she has low self-esteem and a fear of success but I could write an essay on that so we'll save that for another day)

That I think she's overhated??? No fr I have no patience for people who call her irredeemable or a terrible person because she wasn't. Santana is best girl point blank period, and in my opinion, even though I love a lot of the other characters as well, she was the best part of Glee.

Santana's version of Don't Rain On My Parade is the superior version.

In terms of some fanon things, fuck JKR but Santana's not a Slytherin and I'll die on that hill. I'm not a fan of the cutesy nicknames people give her in fanfiction. Also her abuela would never allow her middle name to be Diabla so fuck Ryan Murphy for putting that into the universe.

(also idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not but the people who are whining that kevin and jenna talk about naya/santana too much on their podcast seriously need to get a life)

Rate your favorite ND female characters

Hey question asker! Thanks for asking. It's been long since somebody asked me. I never thought about this question because I solely love Kurt Hummel only with Blaine, Puck, Mike and such. I actually have no ranking for girls as well as boys. But let's see.

In order to get myself away from less trouble, let me rank it in s1-3 and then s4-s6

1.Tina Cohen Queen Chang

She has more plus for me than minus. I am not saying because I am an asian myself but she takes the cake. She sings well(underrated girl), she dances well(they put her in grp A:Better dancers in "Ice Ice Baby") and she is an unsung hero: sewing costumes for and members. She accepted many things without a say. I can feel her emotions.

2.Mercedes Jones

She is a less problematic character. Her smile is just out of the world. She just wonna sing and succeed in her life. I am glad she didn't end up with anybody because she showed me that it's okay to be without a partner. Sometimes, solitude let's you achieve more. I am subjective about her voice but Human nature is my favourite. Her duo with Kurt lit up my screen in early seasons. I didn't like her in Troubletones. It brought worst of everybody.

3. Quinn Fabray

This is somewhat unpopular now. But I prefer her. She started as a normal high school cheerleading head with head weight and had almost everything she wanted. But once she got pregnant, the harsh reality of life hit her life rock. She was pulled down many times after a development but she was a work in process. She learnt that there was life after high school. And she sticking with nd in s3 after Troubletone was formed warmed my heart.

Also, she is one of my favourite voices. She"?'s got stage presence.

I am going to kill myself for ranking these people after this. They had good moments but I disliked them some times.

4. Santana Lopez

She is really ,"darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream". She is Charming, hot (yes, I'll admit) but she was a little Satan. But I survived the NYC plot because of Kurt and her. Until that famous funny girl fight came.

Her rants were okay sometimes, but it got worse in later seasons. She started to rant just because she wanted too. But she was a better friend. She is one of the people who will be like," I can roast my friends like barbeque but I can only roast."

And anybody who says Kurt cried for unnecessary reasons, think of this girl who cried for cutting tanning privileges and for calling out she was mean.

Her voice is subjective too for me.

5. Lauren Zizes

She was nice addition to nd when Kurt left. Plus, Ashley Fink has good comedic timing and is charming. I love her attitude where she didn't give 2 shit about what other people said but she lowkey was a bully too.

Her voice isn't for singing but she is entertaining.

6.Rachel Berry

Her whole character started as somebody who will do anything to achiever her cake. I didn't care about her most of the times but she she really got on my nerves in later seasons. I felt like slapping her multiple times. She doesn't want to listen to anybody, she sent a person to a crack house just because she was threatened, she threw many people under the bus for no reason. She is one of the worse dancers too.

She was annoying downright at nyada and successses were served in her plate. I know she was work g hard but she had to let her work speak, not her mouth. I still can't digest that Rachel kept pestering Carmen when Kurt waited patiently. He did go to Carmen for second chance, but at least he did his first audition better, and he took effort to make a video tape if him singing another song(wake me up before you go go in acoustic version is pretty questionable though).

I was so happy that her tv pilot failed and she became slightly better. Also confusing your boyfriend about his career when he was already confused just so he could be with you?Nope for me.

I do t know how people love her and hate Kurt.

Her songs are totally subjective .

7. Brittany S. Pierce

I don't like her for some reason. She was bland for me. Not interesting. And I don't care for Brittana. Also she posted a sex tape of herself and girlfriend and got away. She kept dating people, she didn't have a stable mind on loving people. Also, her lines were sometimes hilarious but they were insulting.

9. Sugar Motta

Sugar Motta was... There. That's it. She was just a cash cow. She was funny sometimes but she is not for me.

Now for s4-s6

1. Unique Addams

The love child of Kurt and Mercedes. I liked her among later season nd members. She is a diva but she didn't throw people under her bus. Much like Kurt. I like her voice. I didn't like her catfishing but she was ok.

2. Tina Cohen Chang

Her explanation suits her too and I agree her on being bossy because putting up with a glee club for 3 seasons and when it's her senior year, she gotta enjoy and have her privilege. Her crush on Blaine was creepy but I understand. That's it.

3. Madison Mccarthy

She was an adorable munchkin. She was a supportive twin, I liked her energy. Wish we got her more.

4. Jane Hayward

Unfortunately Tumblr doesn't allow more than 10 pics.

I didn't care about her. She was okay.

5. Marley Rose

She was nice. She had great voice. She had sympathetic story. But I have nothing special about her

6. Kitty Wilde.

She was annoying to an extent. But she was better in s6.

Bejewelled, Performativity, and Santana Lopez's closet

EDIT: Wow this got very long and in the weeds. I hope it ended up somewhat coherent.

Initially, I said that I saw this song as specifically regarding Santana's glass closet period (2.15-3.07), but with further reflection, I think it might actually work for all of her arc s1-s3.

The first verse isn't really relevant to my broader point here, but I could kind of see it as right after the Brittana argument at the end of Sexy, because that version of Santana would see one single moment of true vulnerability - one that ended up with her being spurned - as being 'too kind', and then we get 'And by the way, I'm going out tonight'. And she does. She starts 'dating' Dave, and runs for Prom Queen with him at her side, which, as Quinn tells us, is kind of the ultimate in high school prestige.

It's also, as both she and Quinn come to realise by the end of season 3, completely empty bullshit. Santana explicitly says that her main motivation for wanting the crown in season 2 is to get Brittany back (and, ironically, it kind of worked, even though she didn't win - it was their conversation after Santana lost that set them back onto the right track), but she does so by obnoxiously and very ostentatiously (and awfully unconvincingly) performing heterosexuality.

Which brings us back to Bejewelled. It's a fun little song, and the production and especially the music video are very over the top poppy. One of the centrepieces of the video is Taylor joining burlesque performer Dita Von Teese for a routine. That is a literal performance. They're both wearing glittery outfits, to fit in with the theme of the video and the song but also the traditions of burlesque - something that is also inherently transgressive. It's both contradictory and not, because the costumes and performance are so over the top theatre in a way that fits, but it's also transgressive in a way that a lot of mainstream American entertainment isn't allowed to be. (Burlesque, that is. I’m not out here living under the delusion that this music video is some big transgressive statement. It’s just a fun girlbossy pop music video, and that’s all it needs to be.)

(Kind of like Glee itself, actually - or at least what Glee wanted to be - but that's not really the point.)

A lot of Prom Queen (the episode, not the concept - well, the concept too, but that's not the point here) is about gender norms. Kurt wears clothes that some would code as feminine, but still wants to own his masculinity - and when he's voted prom queen, it's as a cruel joke. But then he owns it anyway, freaking Dave out and shattering the Santofsky illusion in the process. Dave is desperately (and obviously) insecure in his masculinity, and seeing Kurt transgress like that - showing up in the outfit he did, then embracing the title of Prom Queen after having it forced on him, and then dancing with his boyfriend in front of the whole school - freaked him the fuck out.

It's not nothing that Brittany said explicitly, more than once throughout the series, that seeing Kurt be open about himself - and then be openly with Blaine - helped her feel more accepted and safe about being openly with Santana. Because that's the thing with transgression: it breeds more transgression. It's why conservatives are so terrified of it; their entire world is a house of cards.

And, if we follow Judith Butler's argument that gender is, fundamentally, a performance, then the transgression is tied up with that. The performance - Santana's heterosexuality, in this case - is caused by her fear of her own transgression. (Santana's performance of femininity and the way it changes over the series is a different essay, I think.) She's faced with reflection, and making a decision: to embrace the transgression, or to double down.

So that takes us to the next lyrics.

Best believe I'm still bejeweled When I walk in the room I can still make the whole place shimmer

There's that brash Lopez confidence we know and love, but, as with the song, she has to push through some deeply held - and expertly hidden - insecurities to get there. There's no question mark in the lyrics, but there might as well be, especially as far as Santana is concerned. Because when she loses Prom Queen, she's worried that her popularity (which, like Quinn, she craves because she needs to be loved) has been irreparably damaged. By the time we see her come out to the Cheerios in the very-deleted-but-definitely-still-canon scene in IKAG, though, she's reclaimed that confidence - more than that, because it's now about things much more tangible and important than high school popularity. She still wants to shimmer though - 'A star is a star; wherever in the sky it shines.'

The rest of the chorus is very glib and tongue-in-cheek, and very much screams season 1 Santana.

Indeed, the rest of the song follows a similar vibe. It's all very, I'm trying not to give a fuck but I really really do, but even if you decide to hate me, I can live with that, cause I'm still shining.

What's a girl gonna do? A diamond's gotta shine.

It's over the top and campy and performative but with some real emotion underneath - like most of Taylor's best pure pop songs. And that's just Santana all over, isn't it? She's a larger than life figure, but underneath the walls and the performance, there's a (very squishy, very caring, very kind) diamond, and diamond's gotta shine.
