Who are the hostages still held by Hamas?
On October 7, 2023, 253 Israelis and foreign nationals were kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas and gazan civilians. Since then, 105 were released in a prisioner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas and 3 were rescued.
However, 134 remain in captivity (4 of those were kidnapped prior to 2023). A recent investigation has concluded that more than a fifth of the hostages are dead and the fate of some other hostages remains unknown. This video explains how doctors determine which hostages are dead, based on the nature of their injury and by analyising footage and the victims' last phone calls. Additionally, during the operation in Gaza, the IDF has recovered the bodies of a few victims and returned to their families for burial.
Since I couldn't find this all in one place, I've compiled a list of: 1) hostages who are presumed alive; 2) hostaged whose death has been reported/confirmed; 3) hostages who were released or rescued. In the group of hostages presumed to be alive who haven't been released, the youngest is 1-year-old Kfir Bibas and the oldest hostage is Iraqi-born 85-year old Shlomo Mansour.
As we learn more information, I'll continue to update this post.
They need to come back home. I'm hoping for more successful rescue operations soon. Keep them in your thoughts.

"Also, would likely try to tail them on their first date with MC surreptitiously. 😆"
About this part what would Viktor do if he sees MC on their first date going to the motel with the aforementioned lover?🤣🤣🤣
Ooh, you’re planning to give Viktor early grey hairs? 😭😆 For this drabble, I’m gonna assume MC’s nick is called Sasha since it’s pretty gender-neutral, and the surname Kozlov. Also, MC is probably in their teens instead of in their 20s.
Also, this ends up being longer than I first expected (I had too much fun writing Viktor 🥲) so I’ll keep it under the cut!
——————————————————————————
“What the—Oh no, you don’t!” Viktor quickly gets out of his (borrowed) car and mutters curses under his breath, striding—or more like stomping—up to Sasha and their date.
“Sasha! Get away from them!” Viktor barks out as he arrives and pulls them behind him protectively.
“D—Dad?! What are you doing here?” Sasha says, totally caught off guard but still staying behind Viktor and peeking out.
Viktor ignores Sasha’s question and glares at the date instead. “What the hell are you thinking? Bringing my child to a motel, huh?” he growls at them.
The date is shocked and tries to regain their composure as they stammer, “M—Mr. Kozlov! I—It’s not like what it looks like!”
Viktor squints his eyes at that. Lying through their teeth right in his face, hm? The kid’s got guts, but for the wrong thing. “Oh yeah? What’s your intention here, then? What were you about to do with Sasha?”
“U-Um… Just hanging out? I guess…?” they chuckle out, nervously rubbing the back of their neck.
Viktor barks out a disbelieving laugh at that before glowering at them. “Get the hell away from, Sasha, you hear me? You wouldn’t want to find out what would happen if I find you getting near my child again.”
He turns away and drags Sasha away with him to the car. As he drives away, he glances worriedly at them; they haven’t said anything.
He decides to break the silence first. “Sasha, I didn’t mean to ruin your first date… But you shouldn’t just follow someone to a motel just like that… Especially since this is a first date as well,” he sighs.
“Sorry, Dad… They just told me that it’s normal for people to go to motel for dates…” they mumble quietly, looking down on their lap instead of meeting their dad’s eyes.
He pulls over before turning to Sasha. He doesn’t think that there will ever come a time where he won’t ever get worried for his little baby. He reaches over and pull them in a warm hug before ruffling their hair fondly. “We’ll talk more about it later, okay? For now, how about we pick up Ash and go have dinner together somewhere, hm? Your pick.” He winks at them.
Sasha lights up at that. “Really? Let’s go!” they say enthusiastically.

On March 12, Russian Federal Security (FSB) agents and police officers raided the homes of artists and activists across the country. Many of the artists were subsequently taken in for questioning. According to the human rights project Network Freedoms, the FSB’s interest may be linked to a treason case against Pyotr Verzilov, a Pussy Riot member and former Mediazona publisher, who says he’s joined the Ukrainian army. The human rights project Department One, however, thinks the Russian authorities are taking proactive measures as they’re afraid these “unpredictable” artists might make a scene during the country’s upcoming presidential elections.
FSB agents searched the homes of artists and activists in multiple cities across Russia on Tuesday, according to reports from independent publications and the human rights project Network Freedoms. Many of the artists were brought in for questioning and subsequently released. Human rights activists reported that some of the searches were authorized by Moscow’s Lefortovo court under the Russian Criminal Code article for high treason.
Early on Tuesday, FSB officers came to the St. Petersburg apartment of artist and activist Katrin Nenasheva and her friend Natalya Chetverio. The officers reportedly refused to read out the warrant and searched their apartment. Afterward, Nenasheva was taken away for questioning in an unmarked car. Chetverio said that Nenasheva was brought in as a witness in a treason case.
St. Petersburg police also conducted searches at the homes of artist Sasha Blot and members of the art group Yav, reported Network Freedoms. In Moscow, officers arrested a friend of street artist Philippenzo (Filipp Kozlov), who left Russia last year because of a criminal case brought against him for an anti-war street art project. The Russian art activist project Party of the Dead also reported that FSB officers in St. Petersburg took member Kristina Bubentsova and her husband away after a search.
Meanwhile, in Yekaterinburg, artist Ilya Mozgi was brought in for questioning after police searched his home. In Ulyanovsk, artist Yegor Kholtov was also arrested after a search. Similarly, artists Artyom Filatov and Andrey Olenev were brought in for interrogation in Nizhny Novgorod, though they were subsequently released.
Police in Samara also searched the registered address of artist Denis Mustafin. Currently, his mother lives there, and her computer was confiscated, Mustafin told OVD-Info. Anastasia Mikhailova, a friend of imprisoned activist Pavel Krisevich, also reported that her apartment was searched.
The same day, agents raided the homes of Pussy Riot members Margarita Konovalova, Olga Kuracheva, and Olga Pakhtusova. Officers took Kuracheva in for questioning and Pakhtusova’s whereabouts remain unclear. Network Freedoms reported that the mother of Pyotr Verzilov, a member of Pussy Riot and one of the founders of Mediazona, was also targeted in a search.
According to Network Freedoms, the raids may be connected to a treason case against Verzilov, who left Russia in 2020. In early October 2023, Verzilov said in an interview with Russian YouTuber Yuri Dud that he had joined the Ukrainian army. A Russian court later sentenced Verzilov in absentia to eight and a half years in prison for spreading “fakes” about the Russian army. However, on March 11, a Moscow court sent the case for a retrial due to “procedural violations.”
The human rights project Department One believes the searches are related to Russia’s upcoming presidential elections rather than to Verzilov’s case, as not all of the individuals targeted are connected to him or even know him. According to Department One, the Russian authorities consider activists and performers to be “unreliable elements” as their behavior “can’t be predicted.”

Day 29: Patch
March 1, 2035
"It can be anything we want?" says Mayu.
She's sitting cross-legged on the floor of their new dorm; they all are, the six of them, clustered in around the paper in the center. Ryota's holding the pen, because he says he can draw; he's already got a shield shape sketched out there on the blank white canvas.
"That is the instruction we received," says Iyawa. She's holding hot tea from a vending machine cupped between her hands, but by her expression every time she takes a sip, odds are good it's not great tea.
"Is open, is it not," says Sasha, and the Japanese words come slowly, as though he has to think them through before he speaks them. "Is too… what is the word?"
"Permissive?" suggests Ryota.
"Awesome?" suggests Jacob.
"Asking for trouble?" puts in Xia. "I mean, what if we wanted a middle finger or something?" She half-turns toward Jacob. "That's a thing, right? Everyone does it in the movies."
"That's totally a thing," says Jacob. "It means, like. Something really rude." His eyes dart toward Iyawa and Ryota, who seem like they're not exactly the something-really-rude type.
"We will not implode from a bad word," says Iyawa, with gentle amusement. She already knows what it means, from the look on her face, and Jacob wonders whether they learn English in school, in Nigeria. "Do tell us."
"Right," says Jacob. "It, uh. It means 'fuck off.'"
He switches to English for the "fuck off" part, and evidently Mayu's heard the phrase before, because her eyes light up. "That's it. That's the one!"
Ryota rolls his eyes. "Who are we even telling to fuck off?"
"Fielding," says Mayu, at the same time Sasha says, "The harbingers." They share a look, and Mayu starts to snicker. Sasha's smile turns crooked and bemused.
"No, no," says Ryota. "We need a more subtle fuck off." He says "fuck off" in English, too, the words heavily accented.
"Stick an explosion on there," says Xia, smug. "They'll get the picture."
Ryota starts sketching; the explosion takes shape on the paper beneath his hand.
"Is not interest," says Sasha. "Interesting? Needs more than only this."
"So we spice it up some," says Jacob. "Stick something cool in front of it."
"Like an alien," says Mayu.
"We're fighting aliens," says Xia.
"Like a dinosaur," says Ryota. "Code for we're gonna make you extinct."
"That is, in fact, the kind of message we want to convey," Iyawa muses, and takes another sip of her tea.
"It ain't a middle finger," says Mayu. "But I guess it counts."
"What is this word," says Sasha. "Dinosaur?"
"Really big lizards," Xia tells him. "That lived a long time ago and completely kicked ass."
Sasha nods, thoughtful. "Is динозавр," he says. "Will make fine image."
Ryota starts to sketch a T-Rex on top of the explosion – finishes in remarkable time. It's pretty good, actually, a silhouette with its mouth open and roaring, and there in the background, something huge is getting blown to hell.
"Oh, wow," says Xia, leaning in for a better look.
"Just picture this thing on our flight patches," says Jacob.
"It's missing something," says Mayu. "Needs to be cooler."
She makes a grab for the paper – plucks the pen from Ryota's hand over his squawk of protest. "I wanna hear the coolest things you can think of, go."
"Revenge," says Iyawa, serenely, and sips at her tea.
"Taking out a blue dragon when you're the only party member left standing," says Ryota.
"Submarines," says Sasha. "And also sunglasses."
"Riding a motorcycle off a cliff," says Xia.
"Ooh," says Jacob. "Or a skateboard!"
"Who can even draw a motorcycle?" says Mayu, and sketches in a skateboard under the T-Rex's feet.
"I can," says Ryota, pointedly, and everyone ignores him.
"I think we've got a winner," says Mayu, and she holds up the sketch of Blitz's team patch, in both hands, above her head.
It's majestic. It's monumental.
"It's perfect," says Jacob.
He can't even wait to see Fielding's face when they hand it over.

hello, are you still doing these author's cut things? i'd love to hear about the scene where ovi had injured his nose, nicke is watching him sleep on the couch and tatyana comes in and tells him about how alex was as a kid: what did this mean to her, what to nicke? i find their relationship one of the most fascinating in the fic and i'd love to hear more about it!
oh yeah, tatyana was so interesting to me both because of who she is as a person and because of the extremely deep similarity between tatyana and nicke. both alphas (or to-be-alphas) of their family packs, both intensely protective of alex, both with very strict standards and expectations and an immense inner reserve of strength. also, both very scared of letting people in.
the accounts i read of agents meeting with the ovechkins pre-draft were hilarious tales of ovi and his dad merrily eating sushi whilst tatyana relentlessly interrogated the prospective agents with ruthless efficiency, and i thought tatyana’s perspective on ovi’s marriage would be similar. the marriage isn’t for her son at the end of the day, it’s for the team, and as she sees it he essentially is opening himself up to get hurt for no tangible reward.
“I wouldn’t call her uncompromising because she did, in fact, compromise,” McPhee says of Tatiana. “But Alex’s mother is very strong, very protective. And she knows what she wants.”
obviously, she’d come around on nicke but i was interested in showing that slow thaw.
Tatyana looked faintly amused. “Yes. He break five time. First in Dynamo, he small. Take off mask on bench, try look cute for girls. Stupid. Puck hit. They set with tampon. No good.”
Nicke snorted at the image, slightly impressed that both of them knew all those words. Tatyana’s English was significantly better than she let the media know. Nicke suspected she was like Sema, and hated sounding unintelligent. Both of them would rather use a translator, even if the translator was Alex, who frequently mistranslated Sema for comedic effect.
They weren’t like Alex. Alex had taken interviews in English even when he was in the KHL, and barely spoke the language. He worked so hard and didn’t care that people still made fun of his English. Nicke moved his hand carefully, stroking the hard ridge of Alex’s collarbone with his thumb.
oh ho ho it is not only tatyana who is thawing towards nicke, but nicke who has completely springtime sinkhole thawed towards alex in a major mudhole the car ain’t escaping kinda way, although he hasn’t admitted that to himself yet, not fully.
this passage – this scene – is about alex’s vulnerability, and tatyana’s grudgingly trusting nicke to handle her son with care (but not too much care, he’ll get cocky). alex is not only vulnerable physically (his nose, he break five time [true]) but also emotionally, which nicke is just starting to fully comprehend. alex seems like he’s just having a grand old time constantly but his having a grand old time is itself an expression of himself as an open, maybe slightly too emotionally available person. nicke sees hints of that earlier on in the story (alex taking on too much publicity stuff on his birthday, “for team”) but at that point he’s still very focused on himself, and hiding his own vulnerability for fear of getting hurt.
Tatyana patted the potato peeler against her palm, watching them. “Sasha have soft heart,” she said finally. “When he young, he love every girl. Meet, kiss, love. No good.”
“No,” Nicke said softly. His stomach twisted.
“He trust everyone. Let in, trust, happy to see, happy to help. People take from him. No good.”
“No,” Nicke said again.
tatyana is apologising, a little bit. she’s not fully apologising, because she doesn’t regret her reticence and initial coldness with nicke, but she is contextualising it. this is why i didn’t like you – my son, for a long time he thought love was an orgasm. and, i imagine, it took alex a lot of trial and error to move past that and probably his getting with some fairly shitty people along the way.
Tumblr media
Tatyana paused, thinking. “I like how you play,” she said, finally. “You wait. Watch how play start, how others move. You careful. Sasha, he drive through ice.” She gestured with the potato peeler. “He try make the game do what he want. Not careful.”
Nicke watched the gentle rise and fall of Alex’s chest, his swollen nose, irritated stitches on his lip. No. Alex was not careful.
“Game against Ottawa, you good pass. Hold, wait for Kozlov to find spot. See whole ice, wait for him in position, blind pass. Pretty good.” Tatyana nodded, almost to herself. “Not make too easy for him, but you watch. You know how help him. Is good.”
this is a pretty direct line of comparison: nicke’s play to how nicke is as a partner, or how tatyana perceives nicke as a partner. definitely what tatyana thinks a partner for alex must be. not make too easy for him, but you watch, just in case he breaks his goddamn nose again.
“Thank you,” Nicke said, surprised.
“Don’t rest easy. Your face-offs need work.” Tatyana raised an eyebrow. “Lots work. Need learn cheat. Now, very bad.”
Oh, Nicke knew. He very much knew. “Yes. I’ll work on my face-offs.”
“Good,” Tatyana said. “Dinner one hour. You wake him.”
tatyana is not going to sit in a sentimental moment, it’s not her way. nicke is also a bit relieved: in this, as in many other ways, they are alike.
nicke’s face-offs is a metaphor for their relationship, buuuut it’s also literal. nicke’s face-off percentage really was shitty in 07-08. except against sidney crosby, weirdly,  whom he apparently dead-eyed enough to win consistently.
when tatyana says ‘you wake him,’ she means ‘i trust you with him.’ to a point. so long as he works on his face-offs.

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is not a church anymore, and it hasn't been for many years. It was a museum, for a time; Sasha knows, because he went with his mother when he was very small. He recalls standing beneath the high domed ceilings and staring up at the bright mosaics of all the saints, wreathed in halos of gold, peering down at him.
"Mother," Sasha had whispered, when they passed beneath the image of a somber, bearded man with staring eyes. "Who is that?"
But Sasha's mother did not know, and she had told him to hush and listen to the tour guide.
The church is not a museum any longer, though. Those days are long past, now.
Instead, it is a shelter. The floor is lined with men and women whose teeth are stained red with blood, and who are missing arms and legs, and whose gasping breaths are wet and pained.
Sasha's mother is one of them, and although her hand is holding his so tightly that it hurts, she's cold and getting colder.
"Sasha," says Sasha's mother. "You must not stay here."
"I'll stay until you're well enough to walk," says Sasha. "Until the doctor comes and sees to you."
"It isn't safe here," says Sasha's mother. "You must leave the city."
"They won't be long now," says Sasha. "The soldiers said that --"
"The soldiers," hisses Sasha's mother, "are liars."
Her hand clenches down tighter on his own, and Sasha stares at her for a long few moments, pale and frightened, shocked into silence.
"Go to your uncle," says Sasha's mother. "Leave the city. Your uncle and aunt, they will have a place for you."
"I can carry you," says Sasha. "I'm strong enough."
"You aren't," says Sasha's mother, and she takes a breath in to continue. It catches in her lungs, and she coughs, and she coughs, and what comes up is red. Sasha's face is speckled with it.
"Go now," says Sasha's mother, when she can breathe again. "Before those creatures return. Stay clear of the soldiers, and do not stop for anything. If there are barricades, you will need to go around them."
"But the doctors," says Sasha, helplessly.
"Sasha," says Sasha's mother, and reaches up to touch his face, gently. "My dear, foolish boy." Her thumb leaves a smear of blood on his cheek; her eyes are glassy now, and her smile is very soft. "There is nothing here for the doctors to save."
===
"God above," says Sasha's aunt, when she opens the door.
She looks as though she's seen a ghost, and Sasha doesn't blame her. He's spent the better part of the last three days on his feet, when he hasn't been huddled in a ditch on the side of the road, covered in brush until the sky changed from that awful, sickly crimson back to the slate grey of autumn.
"What is it?" calls Sasha's uncle from the other room, but Sasha's aunt does not answer him. She's too busy scooping Sasha into her arms, peppering kisses over his cheeks and his forehead.
Sasha's uncle comes to see, and he says it, too. "God above!" And then his uncle's hands are on his shoulders, and the both of them are very warm, and suddenly Sasha is crying.
He cries as he did not cry when his mother died, there on the floor of the building that is no longer a church, with all of the saints looking on.
He cries until his chest aches with it, and neither his aunt nor his uncle ask where his mother is, and for that he is grateful.
===
Sasha's aunt and uncle rig an old-fashioned radio, and every night they call out into the emptiness, looking to connect with survivors.
They find some lucky few, and they bid them to come. Stragglers arrive in singles and pairs, until the farm on the outskirts of St. Petersberg houses a full dozen.
They eat the apples in the orchard, and the eggs from the chickens, and the vegetables from the garden in the back of the house. They're working through the food faster than they can replace it, but they have time, still. They have months yet, until they'll need to worry. Sasha's uncle means to take a scavenging party into the city, to gather more resources before it becomes a problem.
He never gets the chance.
===
On a day at the tail end of autumn, the sky grows red as blood, and the clouds cluster in thick and ominous. The creatures spill from those unearthly clouds like a swarm of insects, slick and black like oil, blinking out at the world with endless yellow eyes.
Sasha is in the tool shed in the orchard when they come, fetching a basket to gather apples. He hears his uncle begin to scream, and he steps through the doorway, and he stands frozen where he stands, staring.
Something black and writhing crouches on top of Sasha's uncle. Its wings flap like a manta ray, rippling softly although there is no breeze.
The creature bites down, and all at once, Sasha's uncle does not have a face any longer.
It bites down, and then his chest is gone, too.
Sasha reaches for the shovel beside him in the tool shed. When the creature turns to come for him, he catches it between the eyes, and then he takes another swing, and he catches it in the eyes, three of them, all clustered together.
They burst where the shovel the strikes them, and the creature screams, and its scream sounds like whalesong, if the whale was being tortured.
Sasha backs into the shed, and he slams the door behind him. He takes hold of the shelf that houses the tools, and he wrestles it down sideways, so that it blocks the door. Outside, he can hear the creature scrabbling at the walls.
Inside, it is very dark. Sasha picks up the shovel again, and he holds it so tightly that his hands ache.
He holds it for a long time, until long after the noises from outside the shed have gone silent.

Jamie: I take it Jasper and Rachael are still handling most of the paperwork?
Sapphire: Yeah. They call me in whenever I need to sign or testify some legal thing...
Jamie: This all must still feel pretty strange to you.
Sapphire: Ha, if you mean being adopted by my own little brother!
Jamie: Consider how lucky you are to even have family left to take you back in. Look at Archie; he’s still staying with Sasha’s for the time being...
Sapphire: Sasha’s the luckiest of all of us, if you think about it. At least he still has his parents around. Even if they are seniors now.
Jamie: He clearly knows it. That’s why he’s more than willing to share what he has with us...
