I beg every single one of you who's from the US (or anywhere else, to be honest) to watch "Inherit the Wind" and read up on the "Monkey trial" it is based on.
It feels very... Apt for the current situation in the US regarding LGBTQ rights and teaching. Once again, religious zeal is making people miserable and standing in the way of scientific education.

The Evolution of Annabel Craig by Lisa Grunwald
Dear Fellow Readers,
I am not a student of history. Dates and places for the most part do nothing for me. Perhaps that is my problem with historical fiction. To be honest and embarrass myself simultaneously, I was shocked when I learned that World War II ended in 1945. 1945 was not that long ago. Or more specifically, it wasn’t that long before I was born. When I see things about it, I always…

#WDEFNews12 #WhatsRightWithOurSchools
"It was one of the most famous trials of all time set in Dayton Tennessee. Next year will Mark the 100th anniversary of the #ScopesTrial 100 years. Today a museum stands where the trial once took place dedicating to educating kids about what actually happened.
Tonight we take a closer look at a very interesting re-enactment in What's Right With Our Schools"."

[context: this was during the Scopes trial, and Darrow is asking Bryan about the specific date of the flood in the Bible]
Q--But what do you think that the Bible, itself says? Don't you know how it was arrived at?
A--I never made a calculation.
Q--A calculation from what?
A--I could not say.
Q--From the generations of man?
A--I would not want to say that.
Q--What do you think?
A--I do not think about things I don't think about.
Q--Do you think about things you do think about?
A--Well, sometimes.

THE FUTURE WENT ON TRIAL AND LOST
“INHERIT THE WIND” AND THE SCOPES TRIAL
The Scopes Trial was officially The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes. The trial is usually referred to as the Scopes Monkey Trial. It was held in Tennessee in 1925. In it, John Scopes was accused of violating Tennessee’s Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school.
The trial was deliberately staged in the…

back to obsessing over Richard
at first he doesn't seem to have any obvious fatal flaws - no hubris, no hunger for power etc
but his fatal flaw is this little voice in his head that whispers sometimes ''maybe violence IS the answer tho"
it's not like he believes that it's a good solution; but sometimes it's the more reliable solution. more efficient solution. faster solution.
and oh how he wants to speedrun his way back to being respectable citizen
(which is, of course, very ironic given the methods. but deep down he believes that he's so good at killing he can afford being immoral. he tries to get rid of this belief but to no avail.)

Today in Christian History
Today is Sunday, July 10th, the 191st day of 2022. There are 174 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
1073: Death of Anthony of the Caves, who will be known as “The Father of Russian Monasticism” because he had attracted a wide following even among the nobility. His monastery (founded c. 1011) will flourish for over one thousand years.
1553: Under pressure from her parents and her father-in-law, the Duke of Northumberland, Lady Jane Grey, a Protestant, assumes the throne of England, reigning nine days. It is an ill-fated move that will result in her execution seven months after Mary Tudor comes to power.
1584: Death of the Dutch Protestant leader William the Silent, who is the first head of state assassinated with a pistol. After the bullets strike him he is said to have exclaimed, “O my God, have mercy upon my soul! O my God, have mercy upon this poor people!”
1833: Thomas Babingdon Macaulay makes a speech in British Parliament on the Indian question, outlining the positions Britain should take. Deeply influenced by Christian ideals, he urges that India be given self-rule. His speech becomes the Christian position on India as long as Britain rules that country.
1863: Death of Clement C. Moore. In 1819 he had established the General Theological Seminary, where he taught Greek and Hebrew Literature for twenty-eight years. He has also authored “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” better known as “'Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
1908: Death of Phoebe Palmer Knapp, active American lay Methodist, who had published more than five hundred Gospel songs, including the hymn tune ASSURANCE, to which we sing “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine.”
1925: The Scopes Monkey Trial begins in Tennessee. The state had forbidden teaching evolution. To test the law, the ACLU had gotten a high school biology teacher, John T. Scopes, to stand accused of breaking it.

In all seriousness, here are a few resources I think are helpful with regards to understanding just how thoroughly Henry Kissinger screwed the world over:
Kissinger by Behind the Bastards. This is a 6 part series done by the podcast Behind the Bastards, with the hosts of The Dollop on as guests. It's super funny and a very accessible foothold into understanding the scope of Kissinger's vast career.
Kissinger's Shadow by Greg Grandin. This book provides an in-depth analysis of Kissinger's tenure in the white house, covering both how he got into office, the changes he made in office, the policies he put forth, and their repercussions on the world.
ETAN's category on Kissinger. The East Timor and Indonesia action network has long been an outspoken critic of Kissinger's, and they've aggregated a lot of helpful articles here.
The Trial of Henry Kissinger by Christopher Hitchins. While Grandin's book focuses less on the specificities of Kissinger's crimes, Hitchins has no such qualms and details each of them in depth.
I truly think understanding Kissinger, the way he thought, and the things that he did, are all indispensable when it comes to understanding the modern political climate and how foreign policy works in America and therefore, by necessity, in the world at large. The sheer amount of damage he was responsible for should never be underestimated.
