This morning's bountiful haul of black raspberries from the bushes in my backyard! They are like little candies <3
If I don't eat them all straight off the plate, I'm going to make some waffles with my Aldi wafflemaker, whip up some cream, and throw the three together.

honestly it’s been over a year since that entire gallbladder fiasco at this point, but i’m still not over the fact that of all the episodes that was airing on tv at like 6 am on a random wednesday morning was equilibrium.
like, i was 21, away at college during covid, in a hospital bed. alone, sick, and scared out of my mind due to trauma and anxiety, about to have surgery for pretty much the first time in my life.
not only was ds9 on at all, which can be a tall order in itself, but it was the only episode out of i think 180-something to actually address medical anxiety. i came the closest i could have to having julian himself tell me everything was gonna be okay.
if that’s not serendipity i don’t know what is

So, 10 months into the pandemic, I decided to try a new skill. Visual arts was always my sister’s thing and teachers constantly reminding me that my grades weren’t as good as hers kinda takes the joy out of it.
But I’m really fucking bored and I need creative, semi-productive things to do with my time to maintain some semblance of sanity. And the Sid City Social Club is so healing and inspiring, and recharges your creative batteries so easily.
This was my first time properly using watercolour pencils and my first time doing a self portrait since high school art class ~20 years ago (thanks, mask, for covering my face so I didn’t have to draw it!). During a Social Club meeting, Sid recommended the grid method to an artist he was chatting with, so I thought I’d give that a try and it turned out so well! I used elektrobild to cartoonify the picture for easier to copy lines and stronger contrast, and griddrawingtool to add the grid. I then drew a 9x12 grid on my watercolour paper, opted out of the background buildings, and started copying the photo square by square. And then, obviously, coloured it in using watercolour pencils and water.
Pictures 1 & 2: finished portrait; reference pic Picture 3: edited reference pic with grid Picture 4: pencil only (except for hat outline) sketch Picture 5: coloured-in sketch with one lens finished
I prepped the reference pic on Saturday and then the drawing took about 2 hours start to finish during a zoom call. I know there’s room for improvement but I’m pretty fucking pleased with my first ever attempt (outside a classroom). And very impressed with the hat and mask.
The next sketch I want to do is Parliament Hill (if I can stop being a chicken shit about the cold) but my next self portrait will be my Peak Urban Queer pic because that’s a good selfie and a good look.It does show my eyes though so that’ll be a challenge
If you have any tips on how to improve (other than just practice), I’d love to hear them! But I’m not interested in criticisms or critiques because, again, FIRST ATTEMPT IN TWENTY YEARS AND IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE THE PHOTO SO BE NICE PLEASE

Intro
Having been a sci-fi nerd for almost as long as I can think, it was a natural law that I stumbled into the Star Trek shows. The first one TNG I watched when I was in my teens and by the end of the show I grew into being a youth. During that time I also watched the reruns of TOS. When I slowly turned into an adult, I was accompanied by DS9 and later Voyager.
DS9 had a rough start. The star of the show was not a ship; episodes were serialized. The show was also a lot darker and even ended up in a full fletched war. That didn’t click well with a bunch of Star Trek fans. However, I loved the show from the get go. And I hated it at the same time. Back then streaming services were not even thought of. The only chance to watch the show was on regular tv on a week after week basis. Whenever I missed an episode (and that did happen quite often as I was busy with my studies), I often ended up really confused. Imagine how pissed off I was when I missed the episode “Tears of the Prophets” (for the sake of not spoilering, I leave out the reason here what exactly pissed me off by missing that episode, but those of you who watched the episode know exactly why…).
There was not a single character in DS9 who I disliked. I even liked the shady characters like Dukat, Damar or Weyoun. The actors were very well cast and very charismatic. The character I liked the most was Dr. Julian Bashir. I could identify with him as he just finished his studies and started his working life as a doctor while I was in the process of entering adult life myself, graduating from high school and beginning my own studies. The struggles and insecurities he showed in the first seasons and how he matured in later seasons seemed very familiar to me.
When I got my Netflix subscription (again) in November 2020, I discovered they have DS9 in their library. I binge watched it, and caught up on all the episodes I missed when the show was aired in the 90s. Rewatching the show made me see details that I missed before, like the clearly visible bromance between Garak and Bashir (which I totally didn’t see when I watched the show for the first time as a youngster; bless my innocent mind I had back then).
I became curious what the actors and actresses had been doing ever since DS9 ended. I was amazed and happy to learn that Siddig has had a remarkable post Trek career (which sadly is not a given for Star Trek actors and actresses).
For Sid things turned out nicely even though the circumstances that led to his post Trek success had in part to do with 9/11. Hollywood had a sudden demand for Arabic actors and Sid filled that niche perfectly being half British and half Sudanese.
Weirdly enough, Sid’s heritage was never a thing for me when I watched DS9 back then in the 90s. I remember I didn’t even bother to think about what country he might be from when I saw him for the first time. Star Trek was always woke; seeing people of color in the shows was absolutely normal. It was also never played out in the show that Julian was of Arabic or Indian descent. He was the doctor, he was human, he was young and naïve, it didn’t matter where he was from. End of story.
Only now that I’ve started to study Sid’s very interesting biography (which would make a stunning Hollywood story on its own), it occurred to me that he has a multicultural background.
As I was googling Sid, I eventually found his website Sid City, which is hosted by the wonderful Melissa. On his website I found out that Sid has been hosting social club zoom meetings (SCSC meetings as in Sid City Social Club) with his fans on a bi-weekly basis. He wanted to do something for his fans to help them (and himself) through the covid isolation. How fricking awesome is that?
Sadly, I joined the community way too late as I missed a ton of meetings. I joined the community in January 2021. I enjoyed every second of it. Not just the zoom meetings with Sid, but the entire community. Everyone carries the spirit that has made Star Trek so wonderful. Everyone is loving, caring, tolerant, patient and always offering a helping hand. Whenever someone is insecure or has some quirks, everyone else would encourage them to be how they are and join the fun.
I even had the pleasure to talk with Sid in one of the zoom meetings. We talked mostly about my work (which I usually don’t do). Not that I remember anything we talked about as I was way too nervous. However, the kindness and curiosity Sid sent my way was very comforting.
When RL hit me with nasty things (and still doing so), I withdrew myself from the community. To this day I haven’t found my way back in, even though I have started to join the zoom meetings again as a lurker. But actual talking is still something I do not find the strength for yet. I hope this will change because I miss the community.
Oh one word about the blog title. This is actually a Sid quote from one of the SCSC zoom meetings. At one point the topic of tea and coffee came up and Sid said about coffee that he doesn’t like it because it’s “too adult tasting”. I found that hilarious coming from a 55 years old bloke. This just confirms that age is just a number. You are as young as you feel and the Peter Pan syndrome is actually a good thing!
As for this blog, you will find here my ramblings about everything Sid including movie or episode reviews. I hope you enjoy!

Brain Sciences, Vol. 9, Pages 1: Differential Expression of Genes Related to Innate Immune Responses in Ex Vivo Spinal Cord and Cerebellar Slice Cultures Infected with West Nile Virus
West Nile virus (WNV) infection results in a spectrum of neurological symptoms, ranging from a benign fever to severe WNV neuroinvasive disease with high mortality. Many who recover from WNV neuroinvasive infection present with long-term deficits, including weakness, fatigue, and cognitive problems. While neurons are a main target of WNV, other cell types, especially astrocytes, play an important role in promoting WNV-mediated central nervous system (CNS) damage. Conversely, it has been shown that cultured primary astrocytes secrete high levels of interferons (IFNs) immediately after WNV exposure to protect neighboring astrocytes, as well as neurons. However, how intrinsic responses to WNV in specific cell types and different regions of the brain modify immune protection is not fully understood. Here, we used a mouse ex vivo spinal cord slice culture (SCSC) and cerebellar slice culture (CSC) models to determine the innate immune responses specific to the CNS during WNV infection. Slices were prepared from the spinal cord and cerebellar tissue of 7–9-day-old mouse pups. Four-day-old SCSC or CSC were infected with 1 × 103 or 1 × 105 PFU of WNV, respectively. After 12 h exposure to WNV and 3 days post-infection in normal growth media, the pooled slice cultures were processed for total #RNA extraction and for gene expression patterns using mouse Affymetrix arrays. The expression patterns of a number of genes were significantly altered between the mock- and WNV-treated groups, both in the CSCs and SCSCs. However, distinct differences were observed when CSC data were compared with SCSC. CSCs showed robust induction of interferons (IFNs), IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), and regulatory factors. Some of the antiviral genes related to IFN were upregulated more than 25-fold in CSCs as compared to mock or SCSC. Though SCSCs had twice the number of dysregulated genes, as compared CSCs, they exhibited a much subdued IFN response. In addition, SCSCs showed astrogliosis and upregulation of astrocytic marker genes. In sum, our results suggest that early anti-inflammatory response to WNV infection in CSCs may be due to large population of distinct astrocytic cell types, and lack of those specialized astrocytes in SCSC may make spinal cord cells more susceptible to WNV damage. Further, the understanding of early intrinsic immune response events in WNV-infected ex vivo culture models could help develop potential therapies against WNV. http://bit.ly/2RdKJOH
