The Ok Sign's historical ties to Vavooming
When Crowley describes his "hypothetical" (😉) Vavoom scenario in S2, he gesticulates a moving version of the OK hand sign to Aziraphale. The history of this particular gesture is rather interesting... especially when you consider what Crowley is saying when he is choosing to use it.
Tumblr media
In modern times, the initial, vertical part of what Crowley is doing while talking about canopies is a sign known as "the OK sign" and, in most places, it is seen as signaling a positive response to something. Even though something that is "okay" is seen as sort of middling-- more "not terrible" than "good"-- the OK hand gesture has a much more positive connotation than the word itself does and generally means that something is excellent. It came to mean that in the United States and many other countries through American political campaigns of the early 19th century. The gesture itself, though, is much, much older than that and can be traced back to ancient Rome and ancient Greece... where it has ties to romantic love.
When painted on vases and the like, the gesture was meant to evoke a kiss through the touching of the tips of the thumb and the index finger. Interesting considering the topic of a vavoomy first kiss in the scene while Crowley is making this gesture, no?
In first century Rome-- a time and place we know to be significant to Crowley and Aziraphale's history-- it was a gesture of assent and if a person made the gesture towards another person in the Greco-Roman world? It was a way of professing romantic love for that person.
While describing a hypothetical scenario for Maggie and Nina that many of us suspect is really a recounting of his and Aziraphale's first kiss, Crowley is gesturing "I love you" to Aziraphale by the social customs of classical antiquity.
There's also a bit of fish, food and Jesus in this as well... so, very Ineffable Husbands. In the modern era, the OK sign is also the gesture used universally by scuba divers to signal that they are feeling good while on a dive. It is also a version of the "chef's kiss"-- the one that is more of an OK sign near the face than kissing the tips of your fingers. In the original version of 'The Prisoner,' the watched prisoners use the OK sign to communicate with each other, which was famously inspired by use of The Sign of the Fish/Jesus Fish as a secret symbol used by early Christians.
The gesture is also used in another unspoken language: Christian monks who took a vow of silence would also use the gesture as a base to indicate other things to communicate-- forming the index finger and thumb into a ring and holding it in front of one's self as Crowley does in this scene would indicate in that language an oblation, or offering, to God.
Crowley then keeps his fingers in the OK position and tips his hand down when he says "together", turning it all into a second gesture-- one that is known as gyan/jnana mudra, which is a hand sign used most frequently in meditation and sometimes in yoga. It is known as the knowledge mudra. Crowley also used it during the Gabriel miracle while Aziraphale used its pair at the same time-- chin mudra-- which is the same gesture, just with the palm facing up, and focuses on similar things.
Both focus on knowledge gained and the calming effects of the unification of the individual soul/ego (represented by the index finger) with the thumb (the supreme soul/paramatman-- the more actualized individual soul made boundless by light and wisdom.) The gesture is done as part of meditation to create a circuit that redirects the prana-- life force/energy-- through the body, alleviating anxiety and calming the mind through a grounding sense of connection, calm and peace.
By connecting the two gestures into one while talking about this canopy scenario, Crowley seems to be connecting the erotic and the spiritual and referencing his millennia-old romantic passion for Aziraphale to Aziraphale by using a gesture for love from antiquity... and that's somehow all before this shows up:

Guys help I think Crowley is possessing me I am very suddenly overcome by such a WAVE of love for Aziraphale????
I mean I've always loved him but Jesus Christ it just got turned up to 100 suddenly I mean he's just so GOOD isn't he???!!!
He's so kind and he's so nice and he's so PRETTY I mean have you seen him in his little outfit with the comfortable-old-couch waistcoat he refuses to ever take off and the silly little bowtie he thinks is so stylish and you know it actually KIND OF IS but ONLY on him??!?! and that beige coat that suits him so well and he just looks so well put together and also so soft and cozy at the same time like HAVE YOU SEEN HIM???
And he's so gentle and he's so full of love for everyone and everything and he always tries So Hard to do the right thing... and he's so ready to change his mind about what The Right Thing is when he is presented with new information like that is such a rare trait!
And he's so FUN, you know all his weird little hobbies I mean who collects old prophecy books and misprinted bibles ONLY this weirdo!! And he's so obsessed with silly little magic tricks that aren't even magic at all when he could very easily do real magic instead but noooo, making people think you're doing real magic when your Not Actually doing real magic is so much more fun apparently idk??? And he collects licenses (shooting guns, driving cars, literally who knows what else, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if my guy knew how to scuba dive and fly a plane), and he learned French the hard way just because?? He likes learning I guess?? And he's so bad at it, it's so silly it's Infuriating but it's also so endearing he's taking such JOY in it!!
And maybe you'd THINK that's all he is, sweet little goofball, but no!!!! Beneath all that soft exterior, this very intentionally soft and fun and kind exterior that he's carefully cultivated for millennia, he's also so incredibly brave. I think about how he was ready to face the thing he feared the most, to save three innocent kids. He was so ready to give up everything he had, fall from grace and spend eternity in hell, just so these kids could live. Just so that family would be spared the grief. Just so they could have a few more short years of human happiness. He lied to his boss for justice and he lied to GOD for justice and he somehow got away with it who does that??? AZIRAPHALE IS WHO. And he Never backs down did you see him pick up his little sword at almost-Armageddon when Lucifer himself rose from hell to end it all and my angel was ready to fight Satan Himself if he had to HELLO???
And then he blew up his halo and casually declared war on hell to save two humans and his former boss and his bookshop what a fucking badass!!?!?
And have I mentioned how pretty he is yes I have but it's worth mentioning again because have you seen his eyes?? Color of the fucking sky, they are, and his nose is so perfectly shaped and his stupid lips with his stupid cupid's bow, and his hair!! Is just so Damn soft it's and I just want to watch him be himself and do his thing but I also want to HOLD him and protect him and keep him safe from everything because if anything ever happened to him I-... UGH.
I don't KNOW.
I JUST LOVE HIM SO MUCH.

Alright look.
You don’t need to be famous!
You don’t need to be a content creator.
You don’t need to have a hundred thousand followers.
You don’t need to make a massive impact on the world.
It’s okay to fucking EXIST in the world. To make a small impact. To have normal friends and a normal obscure life, like everyone else on this planet.
I get it if you’re lonely, I get it if you feel like there’s no point to life, but fame isn’t the answer to that problem.
Yes I am talking about James fucking Somerton. Hell, I am talking TO James Somerton, motherfucker if you’re reading this, somehow, despite me literally being a nobody on tumblr, then- wow! What are the odds! What the fuck is wrong with you. Also don’t fucking do it. Please log off and live a happy normal mediocre life. Please.
But I’m also talking to every 20-something (me included) who thinks “gee i want to be like those fancy content creators and filmmakers and artists who make stuff and everyone looks at it.”
LISTEN. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, YOU PROBABLY WON’T BE A CELEBRITY, AND THAT’S PROBABLY A GOOD THING.
And I’m not saying don’t dream big. “Dream big” can mean all sorts of things, and none of them have to be about fame. Entertainment and academia are like 10% of the full breadth of human experience.
You can garden. Knit. Raise animals. Go scuba diving. Join a book club. Play sportsball. Dance at a club. Dance at a park. Learn tango! Paint pictures for small local galleries and people who want something crazy on their walls. Have sex. Go to concerts. Volunteer. Write poetry. Learn an instrument. Learn a language. Go hiking! Biking! Run a marathon! Collect coins, collect shells, collect bones. Find god (any god). Be the guy who hands put water bottles at protests. Join a tabletop gaming group. Play trading card games.
I’ve been saying for a real long time that someone like James Somerton is just not fit to write video essays, he’s not fit to be a content creator - James if you’re still here, we all saw your ‘measured response’, if you were telling the truth about those memory issues and ADHD and they genuinely are so bad that you can’t properly cite your sources- you can’t be a video essayist. I’m sorry. It’s part of the job description.
and look. that’s okay. because there’s so much other stuff he can do with his life. Stuff that doesn’t require him to, you know, make proper citations. Write creatively. Manage a film production company. Those things. The things he evidently can’t do competently.
The idea that he’d rather die than have a normal life, a peaceful life out of the public eye, working a job that he can actually be good at, having his hobbies and his real life friends and maybe even a family… there’s no other word for it than “sad”. That’s so fucking sad, and I don’t even mean that in an insulting way. I know I hate the dude, but jesus.
And I just. If you’re reading this post and the idea of someone absolutely who’d rather die than be normal resonated with you - first of all, do you need a hug, second of all,
This post is for you.
Please take care of yourself and just find joy doing what you want to do. Don’t try to Be Famous. Please.

Narajiro reaches out & starts ruffling Luck's hair. ❛❛ Ahaha ! The ruffle suits you better , son ! ❜❜ Meanwhile , Koto's clinging tightly onto him , trying to get Narajiro to stop. ❛❛ Dad ! Dad ! Papa ! Stoooop ! You're gonna scare ---- Sweet Jesus ! ❜❜ Koto lets out a gasp as Narajiro hugs them both tightly.
Tumblr media
Years of being Berga’s younger brother had toughened him up some, at least regarding hugs. Mr. Unkaku’s tight squeeze around Luck’s waist wasn’t slacking, but it was far from restrictive. Luck waited to hear the eventual pop and crack of his spine contorting into some unseen shape, but nothing came save for Koto’s large gasp. Perhaps this had less to do with Berga, and more to do with Claire. i don’t believe Koto has ever met Claire, now that i think about it. Not that Koto really could nowadays. While Claire was still alive & kicking at the ripe age of 90, he was often too busy partaking in activities well outside of New York. If Luck recalled the last he heard of his dear step - brother, he had been deep - sea scuba - diving for treasure somewhere in the equatorial region . . . Really, though, this was a bad time. He had other pressing matters to attend to . . . such as the sorry state of his hair, now that Narajiro had undone all the hard work Luck set for that morning. It wasn’t easy, with his unruly curls, to keep it in shape. He could already imagine the amount of pain & consternation he would have to face in the next few minutes to pack it neat & tight again. Knowing it would be impolite to show his annoyance in the face of a family friend, Luck refrained from making it too obvious. Once Narajiro had loosened his grip on the hug, Luck stepped back & took in a deep breath, slowly starting to fix his hair as well as he could without gel or a comb. This wasn’t the first time Luck thought of carrying a brush on his person, for such emergencies whenever they were brought up. “ do not worry, big sis, i am quite alright. your father’s enthusiasm is quite familiar to me. loud and boisterous men don’t scare me as much as they may frighten other people, “ Luck finally said, regaining his breath, “ and, while i much appreciate the compliment, Mr. Unkaku, i quite prefer my hair the way it was. for professional reasons, you understand. perhaps, on my day off, i will wear it more freely, but . . . not today. thank you, though, i suppose. “ Well, it wasn’t as if he had meant to offend Luck by ruining his hard work – at the end of the day, it was a compliment to his appearance. Luck couldn’t be too mad at that. “ . . . although, i would appreciate a warning next time. if i had known you were so . . . mmm, personal, i would’ve prepared to accommodate you more. well, now that you are here, perhaps you could trade your daughter for a glass of whisky? she does look to be on the verge of passing out, “ Luck chuckled.

josee the tiger and the fish was... okay. it's definitely better than perfect world, but it's only mildly better than a silent voice, in terms of "wow you really don't even see how ableist that was huh". her grandmother refuses to let her out of the house, but also celebrates that she starts sneaking out, which like bitch you're the one who made her fear the outside world in the first place??? you are actively explicitly and directly putting additional obstacles between her and having a life??? you don't get to celebrate her conquering your weird fucked up tests. there's a lot of infantilization in the first ~half, she's 24 but she seems to have essentially never seen the outside world before. and her wheelchair frequently gets stuck in little potholes or supposedly shoved down a hill one time and people are constantly bumping into her and shit and it's like, I mean yeah some people are assholes about it but that seems a little uhh exaggerated. and like she has a social worker to help her who doesn't seem to be allowed to do anything due to grandma's orders, but also it's congenital paralysis and I genuinely do not understand why she's being treated as so fragile? like she can't even fucking hand-brake her manual wheelchair on a hill even though she is absolutely shown hand-wheeling on multiple occasions, and getting around in her home straight unassisted.
then of course grandma dies and josee gets a sickass hybrid chair like mine and also an office job we never see. she even seems to live completely independently, all she needed was a special set of stairs so she could reach her kitchen counter. (there's also a random person in the hospital with a hybrid chair just to get the other guy's hopes up, kinda neat to see them tho.)
the other guy gets hit by a car trying to protect her when her wheelchair just gets stuck in the middle of the street for no reason and gets a bad leg injury that requires rehab and may not heal completely, and he's suddenly like "I can never scuba dive again, guess I'm giving up on life" and like dawg if some lingering joint pain in one leg makes it impossible for you to swim idk what to tell you I think you just might not have been that into swimming. like that's just me bro but I feel like you're being pretty fucking dramatic. and implicitly ableist.
also the rival is kind of a total bitch? she straight up tells josee to her face that the other guy only hangs out with her because of pity and it's like jesus christ girl, what is your problem. the story would not have suffered at all if she'd just been written out completely imo. in fact it would be an improvement.
idk. it's not outright repulsive but it still feels cheap and shallow. very inspiration porn of course, I was gonna say you could guess that just from the premise but tbh the premise was deliberately vague/sparse in all the ad copy I saw and it really didn't actually have to go that way. (also you have the whole "caretaker to love interest" problem altho tbh it feels waaaay less gross here than it did in perfect world, because he's not a professional he's just Some Guy.)
I think I did not like it.
