Isn't using boiling oil on enemies in the battle cruel move and inhuman? In asoiaf it's used by Jon to defend the Wall from the Wildlings. Loras was suffered severe burns after being doused with boiling oil during seige of dragonstone.
Is it pleasant? Of course not. But you said it yourself: it’s a defensive move. Nearly every castle or city with defenses detailed has murder holes to pour boiling oil on attackers: Dragonstone, King’s Landing, Queenscrown, Meereen, Griffin’s Roost, Castle Black, the Twins, Storm’s End, Harrenhall, the Eyrie. In Westeros as in real life, murder holes through which to pour boiling oil or water are common part of defenses. Both Dragonstone and the Wall defenders were massively outnumbered, and their ability to use the boiling oil to scald the attackers meant they were very close range. In Jon’s case, the attackers had already broken down the door of the King’s Tower, and they were nearly at Jon and Satin’s level and were going to kill them unless massive numbers were taken out and the barricade was reestablished. Hence the oil (though both Satin and Jon react with horror to the shrieks of the Thenns, Jon says they’re fighting for their lives). The boiling oil can maim or kill, but only at close range and not to many people (it’s just one pot and done for Jon and Satin). It’s not the unfair advantage of a dragon, which is capable of killing thousands in a single day and an offensive weapon besides. Plus, considering pots of oil are more readily available than conventional weapons, they sometimes served as part of peasant defenses against raiding knights, and I’m not going to condemn someone for cruelty when someone much stronger than they are is immediately attacking them with intent to kill. That seems like a clear case of self defense.

Godd evening, fellow Kindred and all dear little creatures and things.
Have there been occurances? Happenstances? Situations?
Perhaps even events that have transpired?
There always, ever seems to be. Miodrag is using his terrible spiked plow of a body to show the twins how to build barricades out of snow, whilst I discuss kennel matters with Drahomíra. I entirely expect I, or even both of us, along with a number of hounds, shall shortly be required to lay a mock seige to their efforts.

Link
If conservatives start talking about how Capitol Hill Seattle is uNdEr sEiGe and how “residents are a-scared to go outside!!!”, you can pull up the link above, which is a live video feed to the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone and show them people casually strolling up and down the streets.  Capitol Hill Blog is also a great, local source of information.
(Quick explanation of the CHAZ: the police interrupted peaceful protest marches with tear gas and the neighborhood drove the entire police precinct out of the neighborhood and erected barricades. And then threw a block party.)
Tumblr media
I lived in Capitol Hill up till a few years ago; it’s the most liberal neighborhood in an already very liberal city.  The protesters aren’t terrorizing the residents, they ARE the residents.  The local business owners similarly are both residents and protesters.

Top 10 figures of 2018
So uh, seeing as how the year's almost over, and I don't have any customs to post (that I'm aware of at least) and cause I've seen people do their own top 10 figures and what not, I'd thought I'd do mine version of it. So yeh, let'sa go.
10: Studio Series Deluxe Lockdown. This figure could've been better. Sure it's a decent upgrade from the AoE Deluxe figure, but TLK's Hot Rod was already an improvement of that. I guess the biggest problem with this figure is that it doesn't work to well im the scaling system that's been set up for the Studio Series line. If this were a voyager, I think this figure would've been much better. Articulation is also on a bit of a low point but still decent. This isn't a bad figure, it's just an underwhelming figure.
99:Studio Series Deluxe VW Bumblebee (Bumblebee Movie) Okay, so I was hyped for this figure, and I do still think it's pretty good. But it unfortunately suffers from the same problem as Lockdown in that it's a bit too small. Granted that's for scaling purposes and it works on that level cause he's small in the movie this form apperas in. The problem with the size is that it makes the transformation incredibly difficult, to the point that I'm scared to fold the roof all the way without breaking it. Converting to car mode is also difficult in that the roof panel doesn't like to line up all that well. Articulation is better than that of Lockdowns, which really helps make the figure more fun imo.
8: Studio Series Deluxe Dropkick. Like the previous entries on this list, I think the size of the figure is what really hurts the figure. But instead of a difficult transformation or limited range of articulation, it's more of a quality thing. The arms feel super thin thanks to them forming the heli-tail, and the wings on his back pop off ever time you try and transform him. I also believe that in making him so small, they also hurt the ability to try and make him a triple-changer, and by only chosing his heli-mode, I think it makes him actually look worse than what his car-mode would've looked like on its own. Of all the characters I'd want a MPM version of, I think Dropkick here would benefit the most from it.
7: Studio Series Deluxe Ratchet. For what it's worth, this is a great figure. Great size as a deluxe, simple transformation, and two nice color schemes to choose from along with two weapons as well. I chose the Dotm look just cause I think it's more pleasing and it has the gun as opposed to the saw. The only drawback of this figurrle is the coatail made from the headrack of the v-mode. It's rather unsightly on a figure that just boasts of accuracy. The articulation is also great on him as well. If you want a random figure to pick from, pick him.
6: Studio Series Deluxe Stinger. Being one of the first figures that I picked up for the SS line, he was a real good start to a really great line that I hope continues onward next year. V-mode is actually what it's suposed to be instead of a red camaro, transformation is so unique and something I've never seen before, leaving just about no kibble what-so-ever, and the articulation is great. I've yet to pick up the KSI Sentry retool of this figure, but I'm honestly excited to when I do find him.
5: Studio Series Leader Blackout. I've waited for this figure for almost 10 years, and now that I've got him, I kinda wish we had gotten him 10 years ago. He probably would've been much bigger than he is now and probably with electronics too. But regardless, this is a good looking figure nonetheless and only suffers from a rather difficult transformation. Heli-mode is nice and big though so that is a plus.
4: MPM-5 Barricade. This was a figure I didn't think I'd be getting, but I saw him on sale on Amazon for pretty cheap and I went ahead and got him. And wow he's pretty good. Articulation in the arms is something to be desired and the wheel wrecker weapon isn't all that great, but I find myself messing with him more often than not. A good figure overall and I got him for about half the price so that's even better.
3: Studio Series Deluxe Jazz. Wow, what an icredible figure at an incredibly small size. This guy is so poseable and so highly detailed, it's a wonder they haven't upsized this to be a MPM figure yet. Only drawback is the backpack, but it's not that bad. Transformation is a bit tricky, but satisfying once you've learned its secrets. This is a figure I can recommend to anyone because of just how fun he really is.
2: Studio Series Leader Grimlock. This is the figure we shoudl've gotten with AoE. Not that potato looking plum. This figure is truely Masterpiece level of both detailing and articulation. Transformation is also easy to do, so you could buy this for your kid and let them have a blast with it. Truely a masterpiece.
1: Studio Series Deluxe '77 Bumblebee. This is a biased pick purely because it's both the first SS figure I picked up, and because the original 2007 version of this figure was the first movir figure I got. This dude brought back so many memories that it instantly became a favorite for me. Aure the transformation is finicky, but it's been fixed in later releases. Articulation is standard, but fun nonetheless. And the weapon piece is nicely detailed and non-gimicky. Super glad this was the starting off point for the SS line and ultimately glad they made him.
So yeh, that's my top 10. Sure it's only SS figures, and that's mainly because I only bought SS figures this year cause I honestly think the Potp line was bad and the new Seige line has yet to release here in Texas. If any of ya'll want to say what your favorite figures were, let me know and why they were. Everyone has their own personal favorites and that's fine cause if we were all the same, there'd be no reason for any of this. But yeh, hope ya'll have had a Merry Xmas and have a great new year.

Canadian police start arresting protesters in Ottawa
On Friday, Ottawa police started to arrest protrstors and towed their vehicles as they're movement angered hundreds of truck drivers because of the trafficking on the roads and the COVID-19 restrictions.
The police worked on arresting the other protesters by going to truck doors or investigated camps people were sitting at. The operation was slow but they carefully executed it and were able to take some protesters into custody without hassle. But one in particular held a sign while being apprehended reading "Mandate Freedom".
The rest of the drivers refused to be taken away. One by the name, Kevin Homaund left a message before his arrest. "Freedom was never free. So what if they put the handcuffs on us and they put us in jail?" The officers's first move was to end the tenancy late Thursday by restraining the two major leaders of the protest.
The authorities blocked off most of downtown from outsiders to prevent any outside protesters from aiding there fellow Freedom Convoy associates. The stand at the capitalarked the Freedom Convoy's last stronghold after police demonstrations and blockades shutting down any boarder into the U.S.
Economic damage occured for both Canada and America resulting in a political crisis that Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has to confront. The reputation for Canada has also taken damage in its civility, some enemies even blaming the influence of the U.S. for the damage. Within the following week officers have slowly been stopping taking protesters into custody due to the fear of violence that could erupt.
The demonstrations have brought out armed right-wing extremists and veterans. One of the leaders of the Ottawa protests, Pat King, requested the truck drivers and towers helping the police to, "Please say peaceful". A threat used against the livelihood of the drivers for being associated with the police. He continued his threats onto social medias like Facebook.
Saying, “To the tow truck drivers, you are committing career suicide. We know where the trucks came from." Blame was pointed towards the police and government officials for letting the extremists gain speed and power. But the on Monday Trudeau invoked Canada's emergency act. Allowing the authorities to extreme power to declare the blockades illegal, tow away trucks, arrest the drivers, suspend their licenses and freeze their bank accounts.
After the police chief's warning on Thursday, "Action is imminent", it was clear that the Ottawa officers were ready to stop all protests and remove all 309 trucks from the roads. The plan played out on Friday as the police methodically arrested the protested a few blocks away from Parliament Hill the heart of protest zone.
There trucks lined up as barricades, police were equipped themselves with automatic weapons and more tactical gear. Tow trucks started pulling away a few big rigs, but not long after the arrest started one big rig pulled away near the front of Parliament. Protesters began dancing to the Beastie Boys anthem and Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up", while shouting "Freedom!" Even after the authority's warning to leave posted on social media.
The two protest leaders were arrested and charged with mischief and obstructing police. The bumper-to-bumper operation infuriated many Ottawa residents as they would be intimidated and harrased on the street. Including obtaining a court injunction to stop the truckers' incessant honking of their horns.
The demonstration from protesters originally focused on Cananda's vaccine requirement for truckers to enter the country. But later transformed into a broad attack on COVID-19 precautions and Trudeau’s government. The protested created the a huge blockade on the Ambassador Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit.
Preventing the flow of auto parts forcing the industry to curtail production. The authorities lifted the seige last weekend arresting dozens of associates. The final blockade in Manitoba across North Dakota went down peacefully on Wednesday. The protest was encouraged and recieved donations in the U.S.
This article heavily impacts society in Canada and America regarding the restriction caused by COVID-19. More broad protests could occur from the influence of the Canandians. Which could become a global problem within societies. Even with the vaccine covid is still dangerous and precautions should still be followed to a degree in order to keep the safety of our community.
How do you feel about the protest, do you support them or is their protesting restricting the community?

A Booklet and a Book: Longitudinal Research on the Maternity Year
Martha Deed, PhD Birth:  Where Culture and Medicine Meet The Pierre Vellay Portfolio. 2017.  38 pp, $7.50 from Amazon or the Author
Nearly fifteen years after Marjorie Karmel introduced US mothers to Lamaze childbirth with her book, Thank You, Dr. Lamaze (1959), Martha Deed, PhD met Pierre Vellay, MD,  Dr. Fernand Lamaze's successor.   Dr. Vellay invited Deed to interview his English-speaking patients regarding their experience with the method and also with their care at the Clinique de Belvedere where Lamaze and Vellay practiced and where Marjorie Karmel had given birth.  He wanted to know how well the method was working and how well the Clinique was functioning to meet the women's and babies' needs.
They agreed that the research group would include current patients.
They agreed not to discuss the research or which patients were participants.
They agreed the report would be ready in a year.
Dr. Deed began by attending Dr. Vellay's childbirth education classes, and Dr. Vellay issued the invitation to his patients to participate in the study if they so chose.  Twenty-three women took part in the study, which consisted of multiple interviews with each women.  Several women were pregnant when they joined the study.  They participated throughout their pregnancies and for six months after their babies were born.
Deed completed the report and presented it to Dr. Vellay in 1975.  And then – life happened and a series of moves, and the report was mislaid until 2017 when it emerged during a seige of unusually aggressive Spring cleaning.
How the research came about is a story in itself.  Birth: Where Culture and Medicine Meet/ The Vellay Portfolio presents the story of the research and contains photographs of Dr. Vellay and some of the women (fortunately, with the photo releases still attached) along with a copy of that recently re-discovered report.
From the Book. . .
The Riddle of the Research
This story is not straight.  It bends around blind curves.  Sometimes it drops into a crevice.  It follows principles of social science, but ventures into untidy swamps.  This is because humans are involved.
About the Author. . .
Martha Deed, PhD is a psychologist who began her longitudinal childbirth research in Paris in the 1970s.   Research includes reports of childbirths at the maternity clinique used by Drs. Lamaze and Vellay, as well as women's childbirth experiences elsewhere in Europe, North and South America. An independent researcher and psychotherapist, she authored several professional papers based on her interviews with more than 50 women. The interviews took place during a time of feminist activism and hope. Gains achieved then have eroded over time and have motivated her to make her work available to a new generation of pregnant women and new parents.
Martha Deed, PhD Culture Shock: Pregnancy, Childbirth and Early Parenthood At Home and Abroad in the 1970s 2017.  246 pages, $20 from Amazon or the Author
In the 1970s and at the height of a wave of feminism, women who were pregnant took the quality of their maternity care somewhat for granted.  They assumed they and their baby would survive childbirth.  The issue was:  How would they be treated in the process?  Women insisted upon knowing their options, making their own choices.  They were not satisfied with being treated as baby containers.
Even collecting pregnancy and childbirth stories from a circle of friends and women she met on her travels, Dr. Deed became increasingly aware that a woman's cultural context was influencing women's pregnancy and childbirth experiences in both profound and subtle ways.
This conclusion was underscored by mutually exclusive cultural or medical imperatives between cultures. Always, the rationale was :  If you comply, you are a good mother; it you oppose us, you are thinking more of yourself than your baby's well-being.  This was a vicious and universal experience, and women were enduring these conditions during particularly vulnerable times in their lives.
Example:
United States obstetrician:  We have to examine your baby during his or her first 4-8 hours of life (depending on the day of the week and time of day you give birth) to make sure s/he is healthy.  Your desire to hold your baby and put it to her breast right after birth is selfish.  The baby doesn't care.
France:  Your desire to rest and to gather yourself right after giving birth is selfish.  The baby will not bond properly to you unless you keep him/her with you – as ducklings must imprint on their mothers right after they hatch.
It was striking how often “selfish” mothers by one country's standards were another country's “best” mothers.
Culture Shock presents more than 50 women's stories as they experienced pregnancy, childbirth and the first six months of parenthood in the 1960s – 1970s in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Italy, Germany, France, the UK and elsewhere. Fathers were included as well as their roles were emerging as more active participants both in the births and also in their baby's first days and weeks of life.
In 1975, Deed wrote:
We are not organized.  Each woman struggles along, perhaps with sympathetic support from a few female friends and relatives who have been subjected to the same influences.  Only exceptional women have had the power to dictate the terms of their own maternity.
Once the research was completed, Deed presented the results at an American Psychological Convention (1975) and also in a paper, “At the Barricades: Maternity Re-examined,” (Journal of Pastoral Psychology, Fall-Winter 1976) 55-60.  The book of women's stories that she intended to write for women or in 1980 went unwritten until 2016 when she became aware of one painful story after another of mangled childbirths resulting in wounded mothers and sick children.
What had happened to all the progress we thought we had made?  The maternal death rate in the United States was increasing, and the women she encountered were concerned, Yes, with how they were treated as human beings, but equally, it appeared, by concerns of whether they would survive at all and the babies with them
It was time to take those women's stories of the '60s and '70s and to let the women speak to their children and grandchildren of the 21st century.  These older women certainly did not have all the answers to contemporary issues of pregnancy, childbirth and family styles of parenting.  But their stories are vivid, their experiences and strategies, might at least extend a hand of sisterhood, a way of saying, “You are not alone.”
