I first met Darren 10 years ago.

At the time, I was trying to convince my parents to let me study journalism in college so I could be a writer - to much resistance - so when I met Darren I asked if he had any advice. My mam happened to come back into the shop while he was talking to me and heard our conversation and she seemed to warm up to the idea after that.

I met him again when I was still in college but that photo is lost forever.

Today, I got to tell him I write for a living and I get to review his books. He was so chuffed.

Because of the Traveler's abnormally weak La and Shang if she dies without preserving, altering, or cursing herself to a different fate her Shang will collect itself into the locked journal she carries with her and that will be her Shandom.

Normally Shandom of any kind is impermanent but given the woman's inherent weakness---not to mention whatever shredding, disruption, etc, that she put both her Shang and La through before her death---the timer upon her Shandom will be even shorter than normal, perhaps even less than half of the usual time, and it will be much harder to salvage or move it into a far more stable vessel of amber.

If the Traveler hasn't decimated herself before death---and if her Shang specifically is in good condition compared to her normal---there is a chance her Shandom will be her cloak instead but the chances of that are very, very, very slim. If her Shang is bound to her journal it will eventually blacken or thus become indecipherable the longer it remains within and the book will be destroyed upon the Shandom's dispersal.

Starting off with one of my favourite characters from the very first fandom I got into, Gannen from the Darren Shan Saga. This poor man lived rent free in my teenage mind longer than I’d like to admit - then I found @thevampatease ‘s blog and their analyses made me love the whole series even more.

((I'm not sure if it'll come up or not or if I'm just galaxy braining too hard but in the scene where you first see Kariom in person his glasses are broken and if you read the mindscape entry in regards to shandom (which is, sans unique tcol terms, the art of affixing a soul to an object, generally temporary as it requires some mastery/force of will. the soul will affix itself to something belonging to its owner's body; be it clothing, a trinket, etc, and hold itself there) the main image for it? Broken glasses.))
