Maybe it's a 'study finds water is wet' type of thought, but

considering it's an action movie whose overall plot is "immortal warriors Fuck Shit Up™️", I think it's significant that in The Old Guard the thing that makes Copley pull red strings through his Murder Conspiracy Board and say "[Merrick] doesn't care what [Andy]'s done with [her immortality]" is the people they save, not the ones they kill

Most of the Conspiracy Board is him circling random newspaper headlines and faces on old photographs to (more or less realistically) follow the immortals' treck through the world and big historical events. Which is, in-canon, not much different than putting portraits from different centuries next to a picture of Keanu Reeves and saying "they look the same, clearly Reeves is an immortal!"

But then there are the connections. A little girl holding Joe's hand in WW1 becoming the youngest (and first) woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize for Medicine (suck it, Kozak). Or the grandchild of a family that Andy saved from [something] helping people escape from the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia.

They are warriors. They have fought and been in the midst of countless wars, major or minor, throughout history. They must have killed as many people as they saved... and yet.

It's not them taking out a random warlord or dictator or rabidly hateful politician that has tangible repercussions in history. It's the children and families they get out of war zones, save from accidents, protect from natural disasters. People to whom they give a second chance at life, and grow to change the world (or even just their own world), like a mysterious stranger once changed theirs just by holding out a hand or patching a wound.

little pet peeve of mine is when a person’s only idea to make kyrie a ‘stronger character’ is to just give her a sword

I think Michael would get really into it, (as described by the script, "Jeremy's music obsessed friend" lmao) but I think he's more of the kind of guy to jam out casually and alone than in front of other people. He'd reluctantly accept the battle and absolutely crush it, but i think ultimately Jenna would win. She thrives whenever she's the center of attention, and would try to keep all eyes on her. She's tried hard to be noticed for so long, so I wouldn't be surprised if she practiced in her spare time or something to be seen at Jake's parties or something. Michael would probably falter under that attention, leaving Jenna as the winner.

Thinking a lot about Mary moving on…

I love how it was handled, for although while the ghosts talked about it a fair bit, I didn’t actually think the show would go there, and I think it was portrayed really well. It makes sense for Mary’s character development, especially given that she mentions in 2x4 that she ‘dreamed of the day when [she] would be sucked off’ which makes this a happy ending for her, but it still hurts so much, and I don’t think i have even fully accepted it yet.

I am a bit unsure as to whether her moving on was something that almost randomly occurred or whether it was due to the fact that she was healing from her trauma in a ‘unfinished business’ type way. I am leaning more towards the former just because of the actual timing of her moving on, although it did happen quite shortly after some huge character growth and development within the season.

I do love the thought that her healing and sharing her trauma and finding her voice led to her moving on, but the implications of that are very hard to accept, because it means that any growth or development of the characters could lead to their eventual sucking off, and that is so hard to think about. It implies that the Captain learning to let go and express his emotions and accept his sexuality will mean that he will move on, or Kitty coming to terms and accepting how her sister actually treated her and finding a new family in the ghosts leading to her moving on, and that is so overwhelming to think about because I really don’t want any more of the ghosts to move on. I know it is an inevitability with the actual rules set within the show, but I really love these characters and I would hate for them to not exist anymore.

If moving on is a more random process, which I am inferring it is given how it just *happens*, then it means that none of the ghosts will necessarily move on if they change and grow and develop, which is comforting because I really want to see them all learn and develop without the knowledge that all this change is bringing them closer to not-existing, because I feel like that means I can’t enjoy their character development as much, or appreciate how they are all growing as people. I want each ghost to personally grow, but also to be able to sit and exist with the growth without it meaning that they have to leave the world behind for good.

Mary was, in my opinion, the perfect character to move on, not only because of her amazing recent character development but also because of Annie, because Annie was her best friend in a way that none of the other ghosts were, and so in a way it felt right for Mary to go with Annie. Also while I am sure a lot of ghosts would like to move on (probably Robin especially, definitely not Thomas tho), Mary has explicitly stated her desire to move on, which makes me happy for her since she got her desire, even though it is terribly painful to watch. Being a ghost is it’s own specific form of torturous existence, but it also allows the ghosts another shot, and they have become a family together, and I really don’t want to see anyone else move on.

am getting a lot of character inspo for shri’iia from amy gone girl. I don’t think she’s as smart nor calculated but she is similar to some degree in that she’s hyper aware of the current persona she’s presenting and how she’s appealing to the people. the masks and the mjndgames, that’s basically how shri’iia operated while she was still serving under her matriarch in menzoberranzan. she needed to play the roles the matriarch required of her and it was only when she was with her matriarch that she can be ‘Real Shri’iia’, and that’s how I imagined shri’iia to be esp in act 1 when she is so new and scared in the surface. she needed to work out who these people are (her companions) and what they liked, so her first persona - her blank one - the charming helpful paladin who got tadpoled and wants to go back home just like the rest of them (which was half true). she didn’t really argue and she generally agreed to what the group wanted. she was helpful and co-operative, ask her about her past and she will tell you something bland and generic- interesting enough to be ooh-ing about but not too interesting that they’ll delve deeper into it. then, when she got to know them a little more, she started crafting little personas adjacent to her first one ; she’s the girl who’s curious about magic but never had the chance to learn with gale, she’s a cool girl who likes mischief as debauchery with astarion, she’s the one who likes to take risks and live in the moment with karlach, the knight in silver armor who’s willing to help the tieflings with wyll, a disciplined fighter with lae’zel, someone who understands the depths of devotion with shadowheart - but none are really her, not really. ofc her own personality might slip in here and there but for the most part she’s appealing to them and what they’d like her to be but none of it is really genuine. shri’iia just needs to be on their good side to minimise the chances of them turning on her, and if they let her guard down it’ll be easier for her to get rid of them should the need arise. taking up all these different masks, collecting all these intel abt them to be used for later, slithering and making a place in their minds - it’s really how she operated back in menzoberranzan. I think the only one who catches on to her game is astarion but that’s bc he’s doing the same thing too, so it’s very game recognises game lmfao

it’s only when she breaks her oath and goes through her existential crisis that all of her masks drop and her real self comes out. she was never that kind of person lmfao ^, she’s greedy, selfish, paranoid and rather obsessive. she doesn’t care about a lot of things that doesn’t concern her, she has a cruel streak that she hasn’t shown before, and she hates doing anything that won’t really benefit her. but she’s fiercely loyal to anyone she likes, like a dog. and severely she craves validation and approval - also like a dog.

Expanding on my older Redson hcs more.

His hair gets even longer and he ties it in a loose bun so it ends up being more of a fireball when he’s emotional. I like the idea of him and Mei getting married. He would be the one to do all the meticulous planning. Everything goes a certain way. I’d imagine he’d strive to appease both his and Mei’s parents in the aesthetics. Though I don’t see Red being keen on romantic gestures necessarily. I don’t think he ever saw himself in a relationship until he got close to Mei. Marriage was just a step in making their lives easier I suppose. Though they love each other very much. (I don’t see red with the fireball type tail though. I wanted to but I prefer the weird cat tail I gave him for some reason. I think it suits him)

He would adjust his outfit I think. Away from supervillain and more towards inventor. He has coveralls for his welding and his power glove as well as his welding mask. She keeps the sleeveless turtleneck and I think would still wear loose pants while training but I’d imagine a lot of her time is spent working on various weapons/racing gear. Specifically to accommodate for his and meis fire.

#additionally I saw something the other day #where someone thought Redson should have gotten the fire of samadhi back rather than it going to mei #but I actually really like that point #i think it provides a point where red can have someone who understands him #mei who has a somewhat similar life to his and they experience emotions in a similar (intense) manner #the samadhi fire was a bad thing for both of them #but together it created understanding and allowed them to further harness their power and emotions #if the samadhi fire just went right back to red I doubt she would just calm down #she would probably succumb to it as she did in her youth #because he is generally unstable imo #at least in comparison to the samadhi fire #mei could harness and control it because she was supported #she had a teacher and was surrounded with people who loved and supported her #even when overwhelmed with the flames #she had those around her to help #red wouldn’t have that #nor a teacher #i think it was beneficial for both of them that things turned out the way they did #in fact I like the pacing in s3 #s4 not so much #near the end it was good #but I think it could’ve been set up better #it felt a bit rushed #while the lbd plot felt so natural #lmk redson #red son lmk #lmk dragonfruit #monkie kid #lmk #lego monkie kid

i am going to preface this post by saying i am not intentionally trying to make anyone feel old, But--

yesterday i found out that my coworker graduated in like 2011 right, n so i was asking her abt what Teenaged Life in the 2000s was like, and she told me that when she was in elementary/middle school, she'd submit her writing on floppy discs, and for whatever reason, that was just so unexpected to me. i just kind of assumed that people would either submit this sort of thing either handwritten or printed at home, and now i'm just kinda sitting here like "on floppy discs!!!!! (delighted discovery)" over n over to myself

#finding out that this coworker is almost 30 has immediately launched her to 'coolest coworker (to ME)' status #though i guess the fact that she is Also Queer helps with that. i asked her abt her gf n we ended up talking abt stationery #i remember looking through my dad's old stuff n finding essays he submitted that were typed on a Typewriter (in the 60s) #but like. that's a pre-computer era in my brain ofc one would use a typewriter #although when i discovered that essay i remember also being surprised it wasn't just submitted handwritten #anyway. idk i just think this stuff is cool!!! it's so cool!!!!!! i love learning the details of everyday life in now-bygone times!!!!!!! #the worm speaks #*squints out window* although i guess i should've expected the typewriter thing to have continued into the 90s at least #bc i remember seeing this cartoon called jacob two-two when i was a kid n the father char was a professional author #n he wrote using a typewriter. but i guess i must've assumed that was an anachronism? or for professionals only? #*shifting around a bunch of thoughts like tiles on a mahjong table* starting to notice that the coworkers i think are coolest are the oldes #which checks out bc everyone on this website knows that people just get cooler as they age. this is Proven. it's a Fact #like the coworkers nearer my age are Neat n all but i guess i get the feeling that i don't rlly know how to interact with/approach them #but the older coworkers are like chill and friendly n will talk to me First n generally have good n pleasant conversational skills #LOL i feel like a duckling that's imprinted on something or someone

You know time and time again, my friends are always so surprised I’m chill and not snap at them for things that the internet might eviscerate them for. Like people are so surprised that they can have disagreements with me and I won’t cut them off at the drop of a hat.

I think of one of my irl best friends. We grew up in a conservative area and for awhile it was hard to be close to her. She didn’t understand the concept of ACAB because a lot of her loved ones were cops.

I could have done the tumblr thing and cut her off and decided she was trash, but she was my friend for a long time. Since middle school. We were close once so like I always try to do I called her in through dms and had a conversation. Explained that even if there are nice cops, that it was the system that is corrupt. And cops that are not actively fighting to change that system are basically cosigning for that system.

She was a victim of abuse and when I coached it in terms of how you always make sure the abuser is held responsible and how the system is not doing that at all suddenly it clicked. And now she’s the most progressive person in her circle actively trying to change minds one conversation at a time. 

I think that’s what social media forgets. When we make these conversations so public there are so many people who are not interested in the conversation but rather just to win the argument. There aren’t supposed to be winners in a conversation.
