Sorry for the ensuing ramble I just couldn’t resist jumping in on the whole Ancient Greek love thing (I have a degree in this field!) There’s a lot to take into account here - to keep it simple, they have all of the kinds of love we contemporary audiences do and more. In fact the reason you’ve probably seen so many different words for Greek “love” online is precisely because they think about it to such a particularized degree. To add to this, Plato’s ideas about love - while immensely influential in literary and intellectual history - are not entirely representative of the society’s conceptualisations if it. (Also misogyny lol) What we have from that time are a finite collection of writings from a highly educated, aristocratic, wealthy, and above all else small segment of society. And last but not least — which society are we even talking about? My favorite part about these myths is tracing the different interpretations through time, space, even age/gender… each version may sound familiar at first but every author reflects the time and place they were writing in. Ovid wrote a collection of letters written to epic heroes (the Heroides) entirely from the POV of the women they brutally abandoned. Ariadne to Theseus is coincidentally my favorite, lol and they’re so fun you should check them out!!

Hi! I’ve recently visited your page again, after a longer tumblr break and saw your posts about people’s comments on your fics. It made me both sad and angry. Sad because they’ve managed to take away your joy for writing Supercorp and angry that people feel like they can type out any hurtful thought that goes through their head, for a thing that is absolutely free and made with so much passion and care. 😒🤬

ahh thank you so much, i appreciate this. i have to say, sc still has me by the neck, i do plan to finish that fic & maybe write some more but it won't be anytime soon. i had hoped that the fandom would calm down with the kara hate after the show ended but i was wrong, it still hasn't changed.

when you've been writing for sc for so long, the frustration builds up, & there have been many times where i felt like i needed to (& did) restrict myself when writing them. it stops being enjoyable when people are constantly calling kara 'stupid' & insult her in many different ways for not being the happy sunshine kara danvers who takes care of lena all the time.

personally i love reading & writing the reverse situation (lena who's being the patient loving one & also the shoulder for kara to lean on) because the show didn't give us enough of that. unfortunately, people don't respond well whenever kara is struggling with her issues & lena isn't the one who's being comforted.

i write what i like & that's what i'm always going to do, but this build up of frustration over the past years & always anticipating kara hate every fic/chapter killed the joy a lot.

i've seen some authors speak about this too & it's genuinely sad to see! people can like & dislike whatever but it's important to note that there are readers out there who don't realize that their personal feelings against kara also affect authors & their love for writing supercorp

nimona thoughts! still my top movie of the year so far!!

been thinking about how to frame my thoughts on this gem, and I ultimately arrived at a bit of a pretentious jumping-off point. but honestly, my favorite stories are always the ones that end up demoting the whats, the hows, and sometimes even the whos in service of the whys. it's the hardest question and context to tackle in any story, and it's worth interrogating the most in order to find any true meaning, any connection at all to what's told.

nimona shows exactly why walling yourself away from the "others" isn't good enough. it shows why you have to do the work and see them.

not just that it is dogmatically "the right thing to do". not just depicting what certain systemic injustices are, how they are deployed, and who they are targeted at. but the why. that simplest, purest shape of questioning an injustice dating back to your gentlest time as a child, when you were vulnerable, naive, and truly curious in the best possible faith. the question you would always ask was why.

you are picking up a sword to threaten the unknown. you've been told the whos and whats. you parse it thus. but you don't know the why. you are watching this happen on TV, contextualized, simplified, dramatized. you are connecting the dots. understanding the why.

nimona painstakingly drills down on that why. arduously, achingly digging past the institutions of fear fed by cycles of indoctrination and right down to the core of it. packaged in a simple-to-parse fantasy world built with deft, elegant metaphors and archetypes that immediately fall into place and make sense to a person of any age.

it is animation as a medium and fantasy as a genre both working in concert. a fun and colorful romp that ends on a gentle embrace of reassurance that tells children - both literal and the ones buried deep inside adults - that their first question to the world was always the correct one. because it was the kindest.

the human nature…. the kindness of it all….. it’s so hard and yet we continue…… it all matters…..

was catching up with family friends and this woman (essentially my aunt, closer than any i am actually related to) just dropped a bombshell at dinner like it was nothing. i don’t even think she knows how much it means to me.

we were shooting the shit and at some point family and politics and stuff came up and she said something like “yeah, i went full no contact with my nazi brother after he started ranting about trans people last time we talked. i got so mad, because the issue is just so close to my heart, i could just punch him, i was genuinely about to, but instead i told him that i will never see him again, and we just left.” i don’t think she could ever understand how much this means to me, to any other trans person she knows.

the topic changed quickly after that since we love to gossip about other things, but still. it is a lot, even just to hear her say it.

i am once again left overwhelmed by the love surrounding me and peoples ability to take action, no matter how small.
