KOKIA in flashback - 2009
After her 10th anniversary year, KOKIA does decidedly not take it easier in 2009. She releases two albums on the same day: KOKIA∞AKIKO ~Balance~ and AKIKO∞KOKIA ~Balance~, to celebrate the conclusion of her 10th anniversary year. The AKIKO album is only available via her webshop and at concert venues and is distributed via her own office, anco&co, whereas the KOKIA album is distributed via Victor Entertainment. She explains that the AKIKO album deals more with her ‘inner’ songs, as she feels she is both KOKIA the artist and Akiko the person.
She departs on a world tour this year, called infinity (as the ∞ symbol from her albums is the symbol for infinity), starting in Japan before traveling to France, Ireland, Poland, Belgium and Germany. This results in two concert DVDs: 2009 infinity tour at Tokyo, recording the performance in Tokyo, and Wherever I am, a 3 disc documentary covering her journey and performances abroad.
2009 also marks the start of her Life Trilogy digital singles, with the first two releasing this year. The final one will come out next year.

Tokyo to France
Category: fluff
1.6k words; Office date [1/6]
Tumblr media
Gojou Satoru is many things. The Strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer, an official title which is proven often to be true; humanity's ray of light in the fight against cursed spirits—see the "strongest sorcerer" bit; a teacher at the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu Specialty High School even though most, if not all, of the Sorcerers Exclusive don't really approve of him; and a total bother.
He has an aloof and laid-back aura, indicating he doesn’t really care about much other than his missions and his occupation as a teacher. He’s whimsical and spontaneous, sometimes selfish in the extreme, putting his desires—like his all-too-often snack breaks—first ahead of anything, except for critical situations. And even then he might still not come. Add his total disregard for higher-ups who pretend to see the “bigger picture”, and there’s a lot of reasons why everyone he’s ever met—well, most of everyone since the newest kid Itadori is yet to experience the full "Gojou's shitty antics" ride just yet but it'll come soon, you can tell—are often annoyed by him.
And the one person who experiences this more than anyone is you, who's currently suffering under his relentless chatter after another successful mission. He always does this, like you’re the only person in the world he can talk to (read: bother).
You don't have anything specific against the man, he’s usually a good friend and a welcomed fellow sweets enthusiast, it's just that you're currently behind on your assigned paperwork and he's a great distraction. His tales are often laced with humour and he has a natural knack for storytelling. The fact that Gojou has a nice, soothing voice which beckons for your attention is also a factor. If you didn't have work you'd be fully invested in his recount but as previously discussed, he has shitty antics and one of those is not particularly caring about whether the other person is busy or not.
He keeps talking and words like “egg tart”, “Shibuya” and “internationally famous” slip through your defence, forcing your brain to block out the lengthy paragraphs on the report and enticing you to listen to him. After a while, you decide that this is getting nowhere. You can’t remember the last couple of paragraphs and Gojou is usually relentless, but you can hear his voice weakening just a bit as you pretend to ignore him.
Resigning yourself from the work and leaning back onto the chair, you make pseudo-eye contact with him. He seems to brighten up just a bit when you do so, the strength of his voice returning. That makes a ghost of a smile appear on your lips. You'll just have to pull an all-nighter after your dinner with Ken-chan.
Gojou always has great stories about his trips everywhere, both in Japan and overseas. Having a teleportation skill is incredibly useful, you realise with envy. If only I had his inherited techniques is a thought which pervades your mind often.
"And I was so close to getting the egg tart but the person in front of me bought the last one! I waited for an hour! For nothing!" The story is topped off with a small pout as he slouches on the chair, chin sitting on the backrest. You laugh, amused at the sudden change of mood. Only he could go from happy and light-hearted to gloomy and dejected in a breath, jokingly or not.
An easy conversation flows between the two of you as you finally disregard your work, chin resting on your palm and eyes crinkling with laughter.
It’s nice like this. He’s been coming around the office more lately, sometimes armed with sweets and sometimes with an agenda to whisk your time away for his use because he’s bored. It’s mostly fine because a person to talk to is welcomed after a couple of hours by yourself, staring at lit screens until you can feel your eyes die off. You once got a scare because everything had a weird white outline when you finally diverted your eyes from the screen. In a sense, he was keeping your sight safe. He smiled when you said that, replying “Glad I can be of service!” before rattling off another description of a strawberry cheesecake he found in Belgium.
“It must be so nice, being able to teleport places. It takes me so much time just to travel within Japan, honestly such a bother. And I can’t really go overseas either with so many tasks to do with all the cursed spirits running around.” Sighing, you slouch on the desk and bury your face in your arms, missing how Gojou’s lips immediately quirk up.
“I can take you there, you know.” Your head shoots up at that, staring at him with wide eyes. “I can take you anywhere. How about France? We’ll be there in the blink of an eye. We can spend a couple of hours there, eat as many pastries as we want to and just snap right back here. What do you say?” His foot taps on the ground repeatedly, like he’s nervous or agitated. Is he in a hurry or something?
Well, it doesn’t take you long to come to a decision. The offer sounds nice. Really, really nice.
It’s been a while since you had a break. Not like you can take a long one since cursed spirits are unpredictable in their appearances and need constant attention so that civilian casualties don’t occur. Which means the workflow never stops coming. A trip to pastry country sounds amazing.
“Sure, that sounds good. We need to set up a ti—”
“Gojou-sensei!”
The door slams open, the sound echoing through the hallway and the office. Gojou’s new student, Itadori Yuuji, leans on the door while gasping for breaths.
“Hey, Yuuji! What’s the rush?”
“We’re supposed to be training! I was waiting in the room for the past 10 minutes!” A quick glance at the clock indicates 6:40 and you finally notice the sun setting over the mountains. The fading light paints the room in a golden warmth, which makes you wonder why you didn’t notice how fast time was flying. Probably because you were too invested in your conversation with your friend.
Who is now picking himself up from the chair and putting up theatrics by brushing off non-existent dust from his pants. Small giggles escape at his antics. A glance at Itadori tells you he’s close to dying from either dehydration or exhaustion. He must have run all over the campus trying to find Gojou. You wonder why he doesn’t just use his phone. You do live in the fifth technological age and sort of expect a teenager like him to be able to use one.
“Itadori-kun, do you want some water?” Rising out of your seat, you reach for a cup but Gojou’s hand stops it by covering yours. He twists your hand in his and interlaces his fingers with yours.
“No, it’s fine. We’re going to go now. Think about the time and date, okay? Keep in mind the time difference.” He gives the connected hand a slight jiggle as a farewell, skipping out of the room with a bright “Goodnight!” He’s initiating a lot more physical contact recently. Wonder what that’s about.
Itadori watches the scene unfold from the doorway, jaw slack. His eyes follow Gojou but as soon as he’s out of the room, they snap to you. He stares at you so intensely that it looks like his eyes are going to pop out of its sockets pretty soon. You have no idea why he’s staring at you like this and why he’s not following his teacher. It’s like he’s frozen solid in his spot.
Some—read all—of his students sometimes complain about his walking speed, how he purposefully uses his leg length as an advantage and briskly walks on ahead, leaving them in the dust. Some—again, read: all—of your co-workers said the same thing as well. You asked him about it one day and he replied with a great big smile, “I just do it for fun!” He doesn’t do it to you, though. It’s weird because he does it at least once to everyone else you ever met, even your own brother, despite him being only a few centimetres shorter than Gojou. It apparently played a part in his reluctance to partner up with him. Or just generally hang out with him. You wish he’d give Gojou a chance, he’s not that bad once you get to know him.
Hm, maybe I just don’t have an interesting enough reaction for him. Am I not interesting? Is it a really weird and backhanded way of telling me I’m boring? The train of thoughts takes off, expanding and multiplying until you realise Itadori is still imitating a befuddled statue.
You stare at him. He stares back. He doesn’t break eye contact. This is a really weird thing to think right now but he would absolutely crush everyone at a staring contest.
“Itadori-kun? Don’t you need to go?” That seems to startle him out of his stupor.
“Ah, ye—yes! Sorry for interrupting!” Before you can assure him that there was nothing to interrupt, the poor boy stumbles out of the room and also manages to bonk his head on the door and wall no less than twice. Yelps of “I’m okay!” and “Don’t worry!” followed by his running stops you from checking up on him.
“Man, Gojou must really have his hands full taking care of such a clumsy boy. Thank God Fushiguro is a bit more calmer. Now, where and when should we go… Probably should find out the time difference like he said… Oh! Maybe I can invite Shouko and Ken-chan to come along! They need to get out and have a holiday as well. I’m sure Gojou won’t mind if I invite them.”

Tokyo: Temples and Pancakes
I was up early again to get a quick shower in before all the (presumably) Tokyo salarymen in the room woke up to start their day. On my way to the train station I stopped in at Benitsuru to reserve a table for lunch for me to finally have my eagerly anticipated super-fluffy pancakes. They took my name and non-refundable 1000 yen deposit, which would later go towards my lunch, and scheduled me in for 1pm. I then had a coffee at Coffee Supreme in Shibuya - a new and apparently New Zealand influenced coffeehouse with just a row of a few seats in front of the shiny new La Marzocco coffee machine. I believed the NZ influence once I saw the Pic's peanut butter on sale there! They made a nice flat white to start my day out the right way before I carried on on my journey to Hamamatsu-cho station to get my Covid test in preparation for my flight to the USA. At the station there was a small Mannekin Pis statue resembling the famous one in Belgium but that the Japanese dress up in various seasonal outfits. It took me a bit of wandering around the various platforms to finally locate it - on the same platform where I had arrived and walked left rather than right! I walked down into this suburb of Tokyo and found the medical clinic for my Covid swab test, I handed them all my paperwork and then they directed my focus to an iPad sitting on the counter where a doctor was online waiting for my "consultation". He basically asked me my name and whether I was in good health then he told me to go into the side room for my swab. I was whisked in and given a swab test that made my eyes water unlike my first one in Kutchan that was totally fine. They passed me a tissue and got me back out into the reception area, gave me a collection slip and told me when and where to pick up my certificate for flying. All in all it only took about 5 minutes but it cost a hefty 25,000 yen which had my eyes watering again... After the swab I bought a bottle of water as I was finally allowed to drink again and I walked to the nearby Zojoji temple, Seishoji temple, and climbed the Stairs of Success. They were seriously steep and my knee started to hurt just looking up at them, but I followed all the elderly Japanese people climbing up and made it to the top! Time was starting to run away on me and I made my way as quick as possible back to Benitsuru for my 1pm seating, knowing that if I was late I would lose my spot. It was down to the wire but I arrived at about 12:59 and they invited me inside to sit at the end of the bench. It was quite cosy, only about 12 people could be seated at once. I ordered the plain pancakes with butter and honey and patiently waited and watched as the two chefs prepared the pancakes systematically for the other patrons. I saw how perfect the bacon looked for the bacon and egg pancakes someone else was getting and asked the waiter if I could add bacon to mine. He rather rudely told me, no it's too late, even though it took at least another ten minutes before my pancakes were served up. I paid about 1400 yen for my pancakes, and they were pretty good. Super thick and fluffy but not overwhelmingly sweet or heavy. They were otherwise quite plain and just didn't blow me away like I had expected, I also found the waiter very arrogant which put me off the place too. I'm glad I tried it out but I probably wouldn't go back...
On my way back to the train station I passed a nice handmade card shop and ended up chatting with the owner in there and buying a few cards to send out. The train then took me back to Ginza to get Jo's very important Shiseido items at last! I still had enough time for another coffee so I went to Aoyama to check out Little Darling Coffee Roasters. It was a large green park area with some loungers, tables, and space for kids to run around in the middle. The cafe itself was huge and filled with potted plants and loads of tables, plus a massive roaster too. I ordered a flat white and it was card payments only which was a shock! I'm sure many Japanese would get caught off guard. After my coffee I headed into Shibuya for a spot of shopping again at Uniqlo and Village Vanguard which plays some great Japanese pop, punk, and rock music as you wander and look at all the strange things they sell there. At sunset I found myself in the Lindt cafe with a delicious chocolate frappe overlooking the scramble crossing. It was once to sit back and relax while watching the busyness of Tokyo on the streets below, it was suddenly dawning on me that I didnt feel quite ready to leave Japan yet. I've grown to really love it here, but I guess I've never been ready to move on from any country, I always get too comfortable! I also picked out a mix of Lindt chocolates for Jo before heading into Tokyu Hands for my final shop of more postcards and calendars. Just as I was about to enter I saw a bin full of little flip wallets for 500 yen so I grabbed one of those too (and it's now my new main wallet!). Once my feet and back started to ache from shopping I took the train back to my hostel and wrote out all of my postcards for friends to lighten my load before flying. On the way I visited 7 conbinis to try and find a cheesy pizza flavoured steamed bun and got lucky on the very last one! I'd been meaning to try one for ages and now I had the true fear of missing out so I made sure to get one - it was delicious of course! I'll certainly miss the convenience store offerings!

about two years ago I met a friend from belgium in a bar in shibuya and we both agreed the music was too loud so after wandering a couple blocks or so we got on my bike (me pedalling and him on the back rack) towards shibuya, the only neighbourhood we thought would still have open bars, where I caught a beetle on a planter at the crossing, which I repeatedly, drunkenly presented to people as "ore no musume kabuto-san" until a pair of siblings visiting from Iran found it amusing enough to buy us drinks in a basement bar where I inevitably lost my passport and most of my memory from my last night in Tokyo.
I wish I could say goodbye to all of the people I met that night. The French couple in the bar and the girls outside the convenience store. But I'll.never remember who they were or all of it, any of the other details or people. I'll never remember anything after the end. And that's, it.

HR1809 : MAHER SHALAL HASH BAZ : bleus de la brousse
Tumblr media
Imagine that it is summer in the mid-2000's, you are in the south of France in a small hamlet & there is a concert in the community house. You arrive to see a guitar player & singer, a bass player, a trumpet player & a percussionist playing elements found in the kitchen, all playing, what sounds like the "bleus". There is a tension in the space as it takes time for partitions to be found among the myriad of papers before the players then they play the bleus, the bleus, the bleus... These bleus in different scales & imagery are provided by Tori Kudo & his project Maher Shalal Hash Baz captured live on cassette at Hameau de la Brousse, on the 26 of June 2007 during their first tour in France. Years later this cassette is duplicated into a limited edition by the Brussels, Belgium based label Hôtel Rustique & you happen to see it right here on the internet. You notice a string of song titles with indecipherable codes, you figure out that BDJ = Blues du Jour, Em or Cm or whatever indicates the chord & the other numbers indicate the date of composition. Intrigued by the sound, you take a chance & buy the cassette.

Day One: Walking Off the Jetlag
Overview: We woke up before 7:00 am. Nothing was open, but we were starving, so we went and got food at 7/11, as well as a coffee. Then, we made our way down to Shinjuku, and took in the sights. From there, we took the Metro down to Shibuya, stood in the famous crossing, and had a mid-morning meal down in a big food Mart. We had a lot of exploring, and also went in a giant mall, filled with video games, manga, and CDs. Of course, it was only about 1:00, so we took the train up a stop to visit Meiji Shrine, the largest Shinto shrine in the city, honoring one of Japan's past emperors. We had an amazing time observing Shinto ritual, strolling through the gardens, and relaxing. Finally, we had our first sit-down meal: ramen (what else!), before taking a nap in the hotel. Our night began We made our way down to the infamous Golden Gai, a network of back alleys filled with bars and restaurants, each containing no more than ten seats. This nightlife hub had a mixture of tourists and local “members only” bars. We went to Nagi, a well-known ramen shop, and sat down for a few drinks beside some friendly Australian tourists at a random bar, of which we don’t even know the name. Then, we did some wandering down the Shinjuku streets, bought gummies in a local convenience store, before going to bed. We’ve got an early day.
Itinerary:
Walking Around Shinjuku - Day Shibuya Crossing Tokyo Food Show Shibuya “Mall” Meiji Shrine Ramen #1 NAP!!! Golden Gai Ramen #2 Drinks Lawson’s Convenience Store
AJM: To be honest, we did a lot today, and I’m pretty impressed in how easily we’ve adapted to the subway system. It’s not as overwhelming as the map may suggest.
RMF: I think my favorite part of the day was how peaceful the Meiji Shrine was. With a close second being “Tokyo Food Show.” But I want to talk about the shrine first.
AJM: It was filled with beautiful wood, trees, and wow, that architecture was so great. What was that thing you said about this shrine and how we can’t replicate it back home?
RMF: I think something that stands out is that American culture doesn’t have anything focused on peace and tranquility. Anything you see that does that in American culture is appropriated from other culture, like yoga or meditation. I wish that was more important to Americans.
AJM: We have religions that replace that. Like the Amidah in Judaism, which is all about silence and prayers with God. But I do agree it’s very different, and I really loved that we saw that group before us take part in a ritual, even if it looked like all they did was put a tree branch on a table. Now, can we talk about the “Tokyo Food Show”?
RMF: Yes, please! What your favorite food?
AJM: The hand roll sushi. That tuna belly was great. One thing I had no idea about was how amazing the soy sauce also tastes here. It sounds silly, but the soy sauce really is better than it is at home, and I have no clue why that is. But the Tokyo Food Show really was like an underground Chelsea Market, filled with cool food vendors, and a really nice-looking grocery store. I could have spent a lot more time, and a lot more money there.
RMF: That was my second-favorite place we went to today. I have a favorite sweet food and a favorite savory food. My favorite sweet thing was that kiwi/lime/mint gelato. Yes, this wasn’t Japanese. But it was so delicious. The combination of all green flavors rocked my little world. My favorite savory thing was probably the gyoza we had.
AJM: That whole complex was amazing. Upstairs there were music and bookstores. I don’t think we’ve ever seen that much manga in one spot before. But there was also so many CDs! The CD isn’t dead in Japan, folks. Honestly, this was a good day, even though we failed to fight jetlag, and took like a three-hour nap in the middle of the day.
RMF: But it was worth it. By the way, we had ramen twice today. I liked the first one better, but the noodles in the second one (nami noodles) were terrific. Gotta respect that noodle game.
AJM: Agreed. I liked that ramen more than you did, the one at Nagi. It had a weird broth, and it was a little oily, but I think that’s part of the appeal, especially because we were down in an area known for pub fare.
RMF: We met nice people today. One woman who helped us with directions on the train, some Australian tourists at a bar, and the bar owners, who spoke very good English, but not a lot of it.
AJM: It was a nice bar, and I like that there were bars for locals as well. It was a very interesting area for sure. I can’t wait for tomorrow!
RMF: And if we can’t sleep, the Japan vs Belgium soccer game is on at 3:00 AM.
