My dears, here we go and today we open the first door and you can find: De Halve Maen
Tumblr media
De Halve Maen in aktion, Hoorn, Netherlands (27-04-2018) Photographer: Benno Ellerbroek
Infos about her:
Halve Maen (Half Moon) was a Dutch East India Company jacht (similar to a carrack) which sailed into what is now New York Harbor in September 1609. She was commissioned by the Dutch Republic to covertly find a western passage to China.
She had two square sails each on the foremast and main mast and a lateen sail on the mizzen mast. The ship was armed with four smaller cannons, which were positioned in the tween deck between the main mast and the forecastle. The rudder was controlled from the slightly raised aft deck. The crew probably numbered around 20 men. More precise ship data have not been handed down.
The ship was captained by Henry Hudson, an Englishman in the service of the Dutch Republic. After a difficult stormy voyage in ice and snow at the North Cape, the expedition finally reached the Newfoundland Bank and what is now Canada. From Cape Sable, Hudson followed the East American coast southwards to the Delaware River, continuing past Manhattan and Long Island. In the summer of 1609, Hudson sailed along the Hudson River, named after him, to present-day Albany. As Hudson was unable to discover a passage to the Pacific on this route, he returned to the Netherlands.
In 1611, the East India Company sent the Halve Maen from Amsterdam to what was then the East Indies (now Indonesia). There she also served in attacks on rival trading posts, such as Solor in 1613. In 1618, the Halve Maen was set on fire in a battle with English ships off Jakarta and was lost.
To mark the 300th anniversary of Hudson's voyage, a replica of the Halve Maen was built in the Netherlands in 1909 based on plans of similar contemporary ships. The ship, christened Halve Maen II, was shipped from Amsterdam to New York as deck cargo and then sailed on the Hudson River with a crew of 18 under its own sails. This replica burned in 1934.
Another replica was launched in 1989. This was then able to take part in the 400th anniversary of the navigation of the Hudson River. The replica, named Half Moon, travelled the Hudson and its surroundings on various occasions and was based at the New Netherland Museum in New York. Since 30 May 2015, this replica has been on loan to the Westfries Museum in Hoorn for five years.

There is also a border with Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. And, lest anyone forget, there is a maze of underground tunnels one recently-freed Israeli hostage calls "Lower Gaza" which presents numerous illegal exit opportunities.
As Ari Zivotofsky observes in the Jerusalem Post, a September 19, 2023, episode of the Palestinian television show Emigration claimed that, "in the past 15 years a quarter of a million young Palestinians left for abroad." In 2022, over 15,000 of them who lived abroad (having apparently escaped the "prison") willingly returned to it to celebrate the feast of Eid al-Adha.
This is not how prisons work.
The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has been running a series on "Gaza Before October 7" refuting the "concentration camp" and "open-air prison" claims with pictures and videos. The first two episodes follow Palestinian "influencer" Yousef Alhelou as he travels around Gaza, showing off the top spots for tourists, including a gold market. Subsequent episodes include an Al-Jazeera feature of the economic boom in Gaza, Turkish television reports on the markets of Gaza, and various Arab media outlets covering the many sporting events in Gaza.
Hamas propagandists argue that Gazans are denied goods and services they are entitled to because of Israel's "land, water, and sea blockade," but Israel only blocks weapons from entering Gaza. Even after October 7, Israel has continued to supply electricity, food, and medicine.
What the "pro-Palestine" luminaries will never admit is that Israel has been forced into controlling Gaza's ports by the long history of weapons shipped there. In 2001, two vessels, the Calypso and the Santorini, were seized with weapons destined for Palestinian terrorists, and in 2002, a Palestinian ship called the Karine A was seized with 50 tons of Iranian weapons destined for Gaza. Since then, Israel has acted to prevent further shipments of weapons from reaching Gaza by sea. In 2007, after Hamas took over Gaza completely, Israel imposed an inspections regime and began more aggressively searching ships for smuggled weapons. Food and medicine are not prevented from entering Gaza.
Poor access to healthcare is another complaint about life in the Gaza "open-air prison." In April 2023, the Jerusalem-based anti-Israel activist group B'Tselem faulted Israel for preventing Palestinians from leaving Gaza in order to be treated in Israeli hospitals. But Israel treats plenty of Palestinians. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh sends his entire family to Israel for medical care. In 2013 his 1-year-old granddaughter was treated in an Israeli hospital; in 2014 his daughter was treated at Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital and his mother-in-law was treated at Jerusalem's Augusta Victoria Hospital; in 2021 his niece was treated at Ichilov Hospital. Just this month, it was reported that Haniyeh's grandniece was being treated at the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva. But why should any Gazans be treated in Israeli hospitals? There are 36 hospitals in Gaza, many of which are run by foreign nations (Indonesia, Turkey, Jordan, European countries) serving a population of around 2 million.
Of course, hospitals in Gaza are dual-purpose buildings, offering both healthcare and camouflage for the entrances to Hamas's elaborate subterranean infrastructure. An IDF spokesman said that "Hamas systematically built the Indonesian Hospital to disguise its underground terror infrastructure." The Al-Shifa hospital, where IDF soldiers found a stash of rifles, ammunition, and ballistic vests, also sits atop a major tunnel junction. IDF soldiers recently found unopened boxes of medicine for Israeli hostages at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
If Gaza is a prison, Hamas is the jailer.

Out of sight, out of mind. That’s the fate of global shipping, even though all of us depend on it for our daily supplies. Everything from bananas to toilet paper to iPhones travels by sea at some point. But we only pay attention when something goes wrong, whether that happens in the Red Sea, the Suez Canal—or underneath what used to be Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. This week’s accident, which occurred when the container ship Dali lost power and headed straight into a support pillar, has delivered a reminder of the sheer overlooked scale of the shipping industry—and how unprepared many systems are to handle it.
Part of this is the massive size of today’s container vessels themselves. A few minutes before 1:30 a.m. on March 26, the Singapore-flagged container Dali issued a mayday call, which allowed construction workers on the Key Bridge to get a few cars to turn around. Down below, the Dali appeared to have engine problems; camera footage shows its lights flickering before smoke emerges and it hits the support pillar. Within seconds, the bridge collapses into the water. Some of it collapses onto the Dali, too, and with the bridge, cars plunge into the water. At the time of writing, six people are unaccounted for and presumed dead.
Now lots of ordinary citizens around the world are discovering marine websites such as vesselfinder.com and marinetraffic.com, which track merchant vessels. They will have learned that the Dali has a gross tonnage of 95,128 tons, a summer deadweight of 116,851 tons, and that it’s 300 meters (nearly 1,000 feet) long.
When it struck the Key Bridge, the Dali had 4,679 TEU (20-foot-long shipping containers) onboard and was crewed by 22 Indian seafarers, who had been joined by two pilots from Baltimore. Merchant vessels are predominantly crewed by relatively tiny staffs that are usually made up of people from India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Russia, and Eastern European countries. Indeed, it has been decades since it was common for Western Europeans and Americans to go to sea. Today’s seafarers are skilled, but they do hard and lonely work with long absences from home—and when disaster strikes, shipping can be extremely dangerous. Earlier this month, a Houthi attack in the Red Sea cost the lives of three seafarers—two Filipinos and one Vietnamese.
All this is in service of the goods that make our lives so convenient—and which require a vast and largely invisible ocean network to support.
Just consider the arrivals, off-loading, loading, and departures at the Port of Rotterdam, which is merely the world’s 10-busiest container port. Last year, Rotterdam handled 13.4 million TEU at its 14 terminals. That’s 36,712 TEU every day of the year. In the afternoon on March 26, 149 ocean-going ships were docked in Rotterdam, where cargo containers were being offloaded and new ones added. Another 132 were about to arrive, and another 161 had just departed. The expected arrivals included the Ever Living, a sister to the ill-fated Ever Given, of Suez Canal fame.
At a length of 335 meters (nearly 1,100 feet), width of 45 meters (145 feet), and with a deadweight of 104,653 tons, the Ever Living is almost as massive as the Ever Given. But only almost. With a capacity of nearly 10,000 TEU, it’s very similar to the Dali. The Ever Given, by contrast, has a capacity of just over 20,000 TEU, and it’s not even one of the world’s largest container ships.
Indeed, these days, the world’s fleet of ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs)—vessels of more than 14,500 TEU capacity—features a growing number of beasts that can transport 23,000 TEU and more. The MSC Irina, for example, can carry an astounding 24,346 TEU. Today, in fact, the Dali’s capacity of 10,000 makes it a midsize box ship. Compare that to container ships in 1972, when construction began on the Key Bridge: Back then, the largest container ship in the world had a capacity of a mere 2,984 TEU.
The shipping industry keeps making things more efficient—and thus more cost-effective and more attractive. It’s thanks to shipping that it has made so much sense to build a globalized economy: It’s so cheap to ship goods globally that people in wealthy nations can have them made elsewhere, transported across a few oceans, and still pay less than if they were made at home.
But the massive ships come with equally massive logistical demands. Ports have to be expanded to be able to receive and service them. The port service, for example, involves higher cranes with a wider reach: just imagine 24,000 containers stacked upward and sideways. The ports also need larger storage facilities to hold such vessels’ cargo until it’s picked up by trucks. The financial picture involving ULCVs is clear on the vessel-owner side, because buying a ULCV eventually pays off.
Ports are usually public-private partnerships, which means that investment often involves the taxpayer. The Port of Virginia in Norfolk, which the Dali had left just before its ill-fated call at the Port of Baltimore, has just allocated $1.4 billion to widen the port to make it accessible for two-way ULCV traffic. Norfolk is also currently being dredged to the tune of $450 million, after which it’s expected to have the deepest and widest channels on the east coast of the United States.
“This is a true advantage for anyone delivering to or from America,” said Stephen A. Edwards, the CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, in an interview with World Cargo News. “Our wider channel sets The Port of Virginia apart by allowing for consistent vessel flow, increasing berth and container yard efficiencies, and further improving harbor safety.” It’s a competitive marketplace, and lots of Chinese ports are already set up for ULCVs. Ports and countries that can’t afford ULCV-worthy expansion are out of luck.
And as the Dali has taught the world, accommodating large vessels is not just about ports. They traverse oceans, sail under bridges, and sail through canals. Imagine if the Ever Given or another ULCV were to strike a bridge. Even a sturdier bridge than the Key Bridge (which received a rating of “fair” during its most recent federal inspection) would struggle to withstand such a blow.
Such calamities happen very rarely. It would be extraordinarily expensive for cities and countries to strengthen bridges and other infrastructure that a massive container ship might hit. The Dali’s crew and pilots appear to have tried their hardest to steer the ship away from the Key Bridge when the power supply failed, and they issued a mayday call to alert authorities to the fact that the ship was approaching the bridge. This, though, is unlikely to be the last time that machines fail man.
Even as ships get bigger and bigger, with more and more sophisticated technology, the human brain and hands are an indispensable backup. Giving crews a few more tools with which to manually counteract technology may be the best way of avoiding another Key Bridge disaster.
Shipping—an industry that involves ratings, officers, stevedores, crane operators, ship managers, insurers, and many others—goes on delivering your favorite consumer goods around the clock. It remains a miracle that mishaps involving their floating fortresses occur so rarely.

An Israeli trading ship will reportedly dock in Indonesia. This information was obtained from social media activist Erlangga Greschinov, on his Instagram account @greschinov.
He gave an open letter to the Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi. According to him, ships belonging to the Israeli shipping giant, ZIM Marine, will dock at the ports of Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Perak, Tanjung Mas and Belawan.
ZIM Trade itself is an Israeli provider of trade logistics services. In a search on its website, ZIM lists shipping services to Indonesia but with China Indonesia Express which is coded CTI and Indonesia Thailand Express which is coded ITS.
Government Answer
However, in her statement when contacted by CNBC Indonesia, spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) Adita Irawati, admitted that she had followed up on this matter. The Ministry also checks the information submitted.
"We need to convey that the Ministry of Transportation has never given permission to Israeli-flagged merchant ships to dock at Indonesian ports," he said.
"Since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict escalated some time ago, there have been no Israeli-flagged or non-Israeli trading ships sailing between Indonesia and Israel," he added.
"Furthermore, the Ministry of Transportation will collaborate with related ministries and institutions to continue to monitor this matter," he said again.
CNBC Indonesia also contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu). Checks are still being carried out.
Has been banned in Malaysia
Previously, citing Al-Jazeera, the Malaysian government had officially banned ZIM shipping in that country. Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim directly announced this in December 2023.
This, he stressed, was a sanction for Israel's attack on Gaza. Where Israel is said to have ignored basic humanitarian principles and violated international law through ongoing massacres and brutality against Palestinians.
"The Malaysian government has decided to block and prohibit the Israel-based shipping company, ZIM, from docking at Malaysian ports," stressed Anwar.
"These restrictions are a response to Israeli actions that violate basic humanitarian principles and international law," he added.
Malaysia itself had allowed ZIM to dock in 2022. This was also acknowledged in 2005.
Meanwhile, ZIM also received threats in the Red Sea region. This happened after the Yemeni Houthi group promised to attack ships linked to Israel as a form of protest against attacks on Gaza.
ZIM said it would divert some vessels away from routes through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. Refers to the long route around the Cape of Good Hope, Africa.
"Given the threat to the safety of global trade transit in the Arabian and Red Seas, ZIM is taking temporary proactive measures to ensure the safety of its crew, vessels and customer cargo by rerouting some of its vessels," the company said.
"As a result of these measures, longer transit times on related ZIM services are expected, although every effort has been made to minimize disruption," it added.
BPS data
Quoting data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for November 2023, actually there are exports and imports between Indonesia and Israel but are relatively small. Until October, the portion of exports from Indonesia to Israel was only 0.07%, while the contribution of Israel's imports to Indonesia was only 0.011%.
According to BPS data, Indonesia's imports from Israel from January to October 2023 reached US$ 16,925,950. Some of the most imported commodities include mechanical engines and aircraft; tools, cutting devices; and electrical machinery and equipment.

Far fewer drugs were intercepted in postal packages and from passengers at Brussels Airport this year the annual figures from Belgium customs show. Attempts are often made to smuggle synthetic drugs from Belgium to other countries. Smugglers are becoming increasingly creative in hiding their drugs.
This year, nearly 300 packages containing drugs were intercepted by Belgian customs. It’s a sharp drop compared to last year, when the number stood at 1,000. Cocaine and khat were rarely encountered last year.
According to customs the drop is strongly linked to the cancelling of a direct "high-risk flight" from Curaçaon in the Dutch Caribbean, which was routinely used to smuggle cocaine.
Possession of khat can lead to a prison sentence in Belgium.  In neighbouring countries a fine or community service is more customary.
"Criminals look for the route where shipping drugs involves the least effort," explains Stephan Legein, administrator-general at the customs service. "Since Belgium is a high-risk country for them, they divert to other airports." The drugs may still end up in Belgium via other routes.
Belgium remains a top country for synthetic drug exports
Smuggling of synthetic drugs from Belgium to other countries remained brisk last year. "Belgium is a top country in terms of synthetic drug exports," Legein says.
That’s because the yield from drugs like these in other countries is much higher than here. For example, an ecstasy pill costs only a few euros in Belgium. In Indonesia, on the other hand, the street price for one pill is about 30 euros. The more repressive the policies and punishments in destination countries, the more expensive the drugs customs say.
Cocaine in a mobility scooter
A washbasin made of the drug MDMA, liquid MDMA dissolved in coffee or wine, methamphetamine in children's toys... These are just a few examples of the packages intercepted by customs last year. Smugglers are getting more and more creative and keep finding new ways to hide their drugs.
Perhaps the most notable catch was a mobility scooter. A passenger wanted to leave for Brazil with his scooter. When it became clear the passenger could actually walk and drove quite clumsily, customs’ suspicions were aroused.  They discovered more than 6 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the mobility scooter.
It is also becoming increasingly difficult for customs officers to detect synthetic drugs. "Synthetic substances have a certain formula. Small modifications are made to formula.  That means new substances are created and these are difficult for us to trace," Legein notes.

Brazilian pine chemicals exports to China restart
Tumblr media
Exports of South American gum rosin and gum turpentine to China have resumed after an extended buying absence of over a year and half.
Brazilian and Argentine exports to China dropped to almost zero from July 2021 because of competitive pricing from Indonesia and high freight rates. But shipping economics have improved markedly this year. Gum turpentine freight rates for 20t isotanks from Brazil to China were down to $1,855 in March, compared with $4,450 in December 2021, according to data from trading firm Enova Service. Meanwhile, freight rates for 20ft containers from Brazil to China have fallen to $750-$1,000 this year from $2,000 in 2021, commercial and trading managers at two pine chemicals companies said.
Lower-priced material and ample supply from Brazil during peak season in the first quarter this year have prompted Chinese buyers to seek South American product, and more volumes should be shipped in the coming weeks and months, according to market participants in Brazil. Argus assessed Brazilian gum rosin at $1,050-1,180/t fob Brazil port in May this year, down by 20-26pc from May 2021 levels, while Brazilian gum turpentine was assessed at $1,800-2,000/t fob Brazil port this month, down from $4,200-4,400/t two years earlier.

the zine looks lovely and so does the merch with it, congrats!!
Tho, I've stumbled over this bit:
For UK customers, due to the new Brexit rules, we will not be shipping to the UK. We can only ship to: Australia | Canada | France | Indonesia | Japan | Malaysia | Singapore | Spain | Taiwan | Thailand | United States | Vietnam
Does that mean other european countries, besides France and Spain can't order? :(
Hello and thank you very much for the kind words!
Due to the pandemic, certain countries' accessibility fluctuates every few months or so. Sometimes a certain country isn't available to ship to, sometimes they do. All of these are from our local (Philippines) postal services' capabilities.
We will however be in talks over what we could do to open up more to other countries and will also keep track on any updates from our local post. With that, please keep an eye out on our socials (here and on Twitter) as we'll be updating! — Mod Arwaiel

Note
make sure you look into what things are/aren't allowed to be shipped to the country and what permits you'll need in order to ship it as well. friend of mine once sent a no-longer-produced kids toy to indonesia without even thinking to look into that stuff, and it never arrived. we think it might be locked in customs jail forever.
i wish it was easy too :( i wanted to send someone some american snacks.
maybe if you ask your local postal service they might have some advice? seems like a good place to look. best of luck.
Thanks, that's good advice. I was thinking of starting small like only selling small prints and things that can fit in a flat envelope, so hopefully that shouldn't be a problem in most places? I'll still look into it tho
The easiest thing to do would to just ship domestic (USA) but I'd rather be able to send stuff to anyone if I'm going to do it at all!
I think maybe this week I'll stop by the post office and use their shipping calculator machine thing to get a better idea!
