Hi! Your thoughts on the epi? How emotional was the ending? I also loved that the stories came full circle (Apollo and the little prince). With how much they were discussing the strawberry allergy, I knew it was a matter of time before an allergic reaction emergency would occur. Serkan is not perfect but honestly who's parents are? I'm glad he got the reassurance he needed from both Eda and Kiraz. I'm also glad the truth about Aydan and Kemal's five year relationship is out to Serkan.

My apologies in taking so long to answer this, but LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. For me, this was a very gentle, but very enjoyable episode of television. I think you'd have to go back to season one episodes 4,5,6 to find three episodes in a row that were as good as 43, 44, 45 (coincidentally episode 4,5,6 of the 2nd season). How delightful that cliffhangers in season 2 are emotional plot points for our dynamic duo, instead of the nonsense like falling off of boats or getting caught by a gunman while playing detective, or non-stop, third-party psycho trauma like we endured during 29-38.

The ending was very emotional! As you say, it was always a matter of time before the strawberry allergy played a role, they've mentioned it too many times this season for it not too. Here it played two roles, first putting Kiraz's life in danger thus cementing their burgeoning family unit AND being the genetic tie between three previously hidden generations. Potent stuff.

I was thrilled by all the domestic Edser in this episode. Outdoors, kitchen, living room, bedroom, kid's room, we got it all! I just loved the family time, and the sexual tension and the way they grew closer throughout the episode. I saw some criticism that they made no progress in this episode, but I disagree with that. Just because they didn't make out or have sex, doesn't mean they didn't progress. In this episode they went from being on opposite sides of a custody battle to agreeing to buy a car together, travel together, work together, not to mention having a romantic dinner together.

So buckets of progress was made, however, more on that later, first the supporting characters...

What a relief to have both Eda and Serkan treating Aydan and Ayfer as the meddling interlopers they are! Serkan wordless, furious glares were delicious, seriously I don't know how AA had the courage to stay in the house with him looking at them like that, he couldn't have been less welcoming. And Eda actually questioning her aunt about why she was there was a surprise. Of course Ayfer continues to be super punchable. I really, really wanted to hit her right in the face when she gloated over Kiraz calling him Serkan Bolat. Seriously, bitch? You know that's your grandniece, right? And you know that she must have some issues about her dad being absent from her life (which you are partially responsible for) so the fact that you're gloating that a man who was prevented from knowing he had a daughter (again, partially your fault) and a girl who was prevented from having a father (again, you bear some blame) have an emotional barrier in their relationship is beyond shitty. What happened to her personally that made her such a cynical asshole?

Aydan on the other hand is still annoying but she has her own problems, lmao. I'm dying because early in the day the episode aired, I said to both @echoapothecary and @melly326 that it was a shame that the show had decided to waste the potential of Sinan's resemblance to Kerem. I have been hoping they would do the Serkan father storyline since the moment the character was introduced, but the day I give up hope for it is the day it happens! I legit had no expectations that there was even a chance it could still happen.

Personally I'm excited, It's nice that the writers gave Aydan some cover, she didn't lie, she simply didn't remember they had hot baby-making sex back when she was having problems with Alptekin. Imagine what might have happened had she remembered at the time. If Aydan had come clean and left Alptekin, Serkan never would have been sent away, Aydan would have had the support she needed when Alp died and Serkan would have grown up loved. I hope Alptekin suspected the truth, because it would go a long way in explaining why he was such a shit-stain to Serkan his whole life.

It was obvious what direction the story was going from the conversation between Kemal and Aydan when he told her they'd "you know'd" that night, but I still let out a squeal when he revealed his strawberry allergy. Three generations of aversion to frangeria. Google tells me that severe strawberry allergy is rare so this really is an obvious flag they've been waving in front of everyone.

The story also dovetails nicely with Serkan's own journey with surprise fatherhood. We know he hasn't taken to Kemal, has been suspicious of him, however hopefully his own experience being kept out of his daughter's life will make him sympathetic to his newly found father.

Engin and Piril... were there. I can't tell you how much I don't care about Engin's out-of-the blue catering business, or Piril's suspicions. However, I did enjoy the 3 way family phone call, once again Can comes through with the right bit of info for Kiraz, he's definitely the most useful member of that family.

Pina and Kerem were also... in the episode. I did giggle when Asst Kerem admitted he was stunned into silence by Serkan's charisma. Tell me about it.

As for Melo, she stole the show among the supporting characters. Her heartbreak was palpable, but WHYYYYYYY did she have to fall for such a no-personality sad sack? Seriously, even drunk that guy is boring. Also why is he lurking outside Eda's house like a creeper, staring in windows? What does it take to get through to him? Serkan and Eda are following a court order and living together, they are in the process of making their first lunch together, you, sir, are not needed at their home for their first meal as a family. GIVE THEM SOME SPACE!

I really don't get what Melo sees in him. However her crush gave us the funny scenes with the mug turning red and also the heartfelt friendship scene with Eda. It's about time Eda is shown taking an interest in her life, it was really lovely how Melo got over the awkwardness of telling her and Eda was supportive and kind. Also hopefully it made Eda aware of the problems associated with not drawing hard boundaries for someone she knows has feelings for her. Draw the boundary, Eda.

As for Eda, she was a bit softer this episode, you could see Serkan getting to her. One of my favorite things about the episode was how Serkan was subtly planning their life together as a family, and Eda being swept away with the tide and going along with it. (gif set here) Family car? check. Family trip to Italy? Check. Sharing an office and working together at Art Life again? Check. Answering questions and giving preferences about one specific house Serkan is designing? Check.

This is significant because no matter that Eda still (understandably) needs time to forgive Serkan and to trust him with her (and Kiraz's) heart again, deep down she knows it's inevitable. She knows they're inevitable. There's no reason to seriously fight the inroads he's making into their life, because she knows he's going to succeed. In the deep recesses of her mind, she knows she's going to forgive him, and that they're going to be together, not just as co-parents to Kiraz, but as a very much in-love couple. However, she still needs a little time to get there. And that's okay. You don't erase five years of loneliness and heartbreak in a few days, nor should you try to. There's no reason for her to rush to let him back in her bed or into her heart, there's time for her to heal and for him to prove she can trust that he won't leave her again, even for noble reasons.

The bet was a clever way to extend their time living together. And I liked the detail that she was secretly so pleased to have him there, and still so attracted to him, but she knew she couldn't let him know because then it would be game over. He'd settle in and never leave. Not that I think she wants him to leave, she doesn't and that's what scares her. She clearly wants him, and wants him there, she got melty every time she looked at him with Kiraz, but she can hardly be blamed for needing to take it slow. That being said, while putting Kiraz to bed, I loved how Eda's plan to put Serkan on the hot seat completely backfired on her. Hee hee. She decided to tell Kiraz that they're being honest and to ask whatever she wants (that could have gone really wrong, by the way, if she asked if Daddy had really been in space) but daddy's-girl Kiraz immediately turns it back on Eda and wants to know if she loves Serkan Bolat and then sets them up in the same room. Good girl, Kiraz!

I immensely enjoyed the tension of Eda and Serkan sharing a room and sparring about which side they have to sleep on and OF COURSE they can only sleep facing one another. And OF COURSE Serkan migrated to the bed in the middle of the night. Funny how these two keep waking up all wrapped up in one another, almost like... they not only gravitate to one another, they also calm and comfort one another.

Once again, every scene between Edser and Kiraz was gold. I can't say enough how tiresome I usually find children on screen, but here I'm just delighted by her precociousness. Even her making a giant mess in the kitchen was endearing. As I said, I loved how much domestic Edser we got this episode. Them running around the kitchen with their daughter, having a flour fight? Pure delight. And I swear Maya Basol looks more like a mixture of Hande and Kerem than their own child would. It's simply uncanny.

Beyond their domestic scenes, it was lovely to see them both just falling back into a spot where their lives were intertwined. Loved Serkan driving her to work at the hotel, and then driving her home again when she quit. Not to mention how supportive he was, I'm not sure how she didn't either jump him right then and there or start crying in relief, when he was telling her she has the talent to be doing bigger more prestigious jobs and now that he was here to help she could do it. Eda's had support in raising Kiraz from Ayfer and Melo, but they really don't understand her career. Serkan understands. He is the life partner she's been missing.

Eda and Serkan seem to be on the same page as far as their families interference, being annoyed at both Ayfer and Aydan, I'm glad to see neither trying to defend mother/aunt to the other. Eda also seemed annoyed by Serkan moving his office to her house for the day, and she made several inferences, as she's been doing, about him putting work first. This is completely understandable, IMO. He left her on their wedding day for work, and he used "work is the most important thing to me" as the reason both times he broke her heart. Yes, after the fact, she found out that there were other, much bigger reasons and work was just the excuse, however that doesn't erase her deep-seated, pavlovian-like response she has to him seeming to prioritize work. She lived five years, raising their child alone, thinking he loved work more than her. It's completely natural that she's holding onto that for a bit. And it's okay if he needs to prove to her that he can prioritize her and Kiraz over work before she lets it go completely. I get it.

As I said, I enjoyed Serkan trying to trap her with the mood mug, that's the kind of gentle friction and comedy I'm here for. Of course he does catch her later on the phone admitting that she loves that he's there and it's game, set, match. For Serkan. I think we're all glad he won that bet. However, him removing his bed on the floor was a bold move and he pretty much deserved her locking him out after he did it. I read a lot ridiculous discourse on this, and my response is: you're taking this show too seriously again. This is a romcom move, it was done for comedy, and I promise you Serkan is able to fend for himself. If he didn't want to be kicked out, he shouldn't have tried to force his way into her bed again. Waaaaay presumptuous, man.

Buuuuut... how did Serkan get off the balcony? I don't know, but as I said he can fend for himself. Dude probably spent the night on the living room couch. Serkan's sneezing was cute, but being cold doesn't give you a cold. Maybe it's an allergy from too much time outdoors, lol. LOVED Serkan smoothly convincing Eda to come back to the office. If he'd approached that directly, it might have been a weeks long endeavor to get her to make ArtLife her office, but Serkan building the play school was genius! He never wastes time, that guy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but this was impressive.

It warmed my heart how they fell so easily into working side by side. Casual conversations about what they were working on, and, you know, randomly deciding to go on a family trip to Italy with your estranged lover, as you do. Which all led to one of my favorite scenes... dinner! They got back to honest, open communication and it was lovely. Thankfully, Eda stopped letting him think she was running off to spend time with Burak and I adored Serkan coming clean and allowing himself to be vulnerable in admitting that he'd made the dinner for them and that he'd been upset when she didn't show. That's how you make progress. Just beautiful.

As for the "we need to all tell the truth" scene, that was silly, but if it gave us Aydan's secret being revealed I'm a-okay with it. About time! Buba was once again annoying and it was cathartic for Serkan to be able to tell him he doesn't like him. Same, Serkan. Seriously, can he and Ayfer fall in love and move to the country to run an Alpaca farm or something? The hospital scene was very poignant, I wrote more about it here. Now what I need is for Eda and Serkan to walk out of that hospital room and, out of relief, fall into the tightest hug. Crossing fingers!

Hi! I was going through the layla x warren tag and stumbled upon your layla x warren essay (amazingly written by the way!) in which you said to check out Our Times. I was curious so I decided to check it out. I just finished it, and I am in tears! I love the movie- thank you so much for recommending it!!!

Oh my gosh! Hii!

I am so obsessed with the concept of Layla and Warren... They should have been endgame is all I’m saying (and will continue to say)! I mean come on, they have that sunshine character steals the heart of raincloud/grumpy character and it's just amazing! (But also, if you think about it, Warren is actually the one to steal her heart!)

(However, I understand that in my post I hate on Will and its unfair because that boy is literally a teenager who’s just trying his best.) I am also very obsessed with the fake dating / the whole we need to team up to do something but end up falling in love with each other plot! It’s just so good and so iconic and I cannot! And Our Times honestly does that plot so well!

Truly Lin and Tai Yu are literally so cute? Lara Jean and Peter K. who? (jk... unless)

There were so many iconic scenes? Them with their dog? Her crying in the rain? Him risking it all (literally) to get her a gift? Just the movie is iconic shit, and I kid you not, I watch it at least once a month (because I’m apparently someone who feels the need to inflict pain on themselves EVERY month).

When will I find myself a Tai Yu?

Also if you like Our Times, you should watch this other movie with Vivian Sung (the actress for Truly Lin) called Love The Way You Are that came out last year! It’s not as good as Our Times, but it is hella endearing and I love it! Plus the main couple is freaking cute!)

Screw it here other random tv show/movie suggestions (not that you asked):

1. Better Days (2019)

I’m going to start with a disclaimer and say It is not a comedy or a rom-com like Sky High or Our Times, but its SO good! It also deals with some pretty heavy subject matter (bullying/suicide)... So I understand if its too heavy for you...

But if you don’t mind the heavy subject matter, the main characters have crazy chemistry and they are honestly too much for me! I love them so much! They deserve the world... did I mention I love them? They’re dynamic is so beautiful and sad and it will definitly make you cry is all I’m saying!

But its about this teenage girl who’s being bullied and befriends/hires a local small time gangster for “protection” from her bullies.... needless to say there are sparks! ( Aditional notes: When I say this movie is good I’m not joking, its been nominted/won multiple awards... )

2. Sen Çal Kapımı (2020 - )

Okay, if you want to delve into the addicting world of Turkish dramas and are obsessed with the concept of fake dating (like I am), than this is the show for you!

It’s a Turkish rom-com show that is currently airing on tv (as of today there are only 3 eps out)... It about the main character who’s hopes of going to Uni are shattered when she loses her scholarship because of the mishaps of wealthy business man (who she hates... obvs)!

So, she goes to confront said man only to find herself relunctantly agreeing to be his fiance in exchange for a job... Needless to say things get out of hand very quickly!

So, you know its going to be good stuff? I mean, they “hate each other” but have to pretend to be fiances... and have crazy chemistry? It’s too good!

(additional notes on the subject of our times, the lead hero in this show has a dog and uses it to see the heroine and if that isn’t a Tai Yu move than I don’t know what is!)

3. That Thing Called Tadhana (2014)

This is one of my favourite Pinoy movies! (Though On Vodka, Beers, and Regrets might be my new fav) Anyways its about this young woman who’s a hopeless romantic who just broke up with her bf and is doing some travelling to get over him. Cue her at the airport struggling to meet airline baggage requirements when she meets a man who comes to her aid. They decide to travel togather, and form a friendship as they attempt to med each other hearts.

It’s very cute and sweet and sad, and I love it!

4. Aśk 101 / Love 101 ( 2020 - )

So apparently I am a total ho for Turkish tv shows!

This show is so freaking cute I cannot! Its a netflix show and its so endearing and I love it!

It’s a Turkish Teen Drama set in the 90′s about a group of teenages rebels (?) who would be expelled from their school if not for their teacher who vouches for them.

When they realise this teacher is about to move to a different town, they know their chances of staying in school and not being expelled are non-existent. So device a plan to have he fall in love so she'll have a reason to stay in town with them.

And let me tell you! The ships in this show are so pure it literally makes me want to scream! I love Sinan and Isik + Burcu and Kemal

Those are really my only tv show/movie suggestions that have similar premises or dynamics as Our Times... However, we will do some honorary shout out, shall we? (Which is to say, I’m going to spazz about random shows/ships)

Dark (2017 - 2020)

Dark is literally like none of the concepts I described above? Purely because it's a mystery/thriller about the disappearance of two children in a small German town. It’s a very explicit and dark (pun intended) and grim show... and has some serious eerie feels!

HOWEVER!

I would actually die for Aleksander and Regina Tiedemann so jot that down!

(LOOK AT THEM!) If anyone looked at me the way Aleksander looks at Regina, I would probably die!

Iraq has a special place in my heart for reasons that may be unexpected. My father was in the first groups sent to Iraq after the 9/11 terror attacks of NYC (where I was living at the time.) He spent almost my entire childhood years in Iraq and other places close by. I don't know the specifics because I was never allowed to know them. That's how the military works. Anyways, my dad would spend years at a time over there.

I remember once he sent me a baby pink shirt that read "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in baby blue graffiti text. I was maybe about 7 or 8 but I knew that war and freedom didn't go together, and if they did it wasn't seamlessly.

Reading the book, I couldn't help but have flashbacks to those once-a-month calls with my dad while he was there. I'd get frustrated at the static and the echo of my own voice every time I spoke. There was alway commotion in the background. While I was talking to my dad, Jawad was washing the bodies of Muslims killed by people who worked with my dad. I felt sick to my stomach numerous times throughout reading the novel.

As a child, it was almost impossible to imagine the scenes that surrounded my father in this far away place. As I got older, and extremely passionate and educated about injustice, I became familiar with the images from Abu Garb and Baghdad in absolute shambles. So this is what my dad was part of? But I wasn't naive and I knew that even more gut wrenching than these harrowing images were the accounts from Iraqi men, women, and children, that I would never hear.

Sinan Antoon exposed me to a world that made me who I am today, despite never stepping foot on its sands. It's a world I've always been drawn to- for the reasons explained above, because of my religion, my solitary with the 3rd world, because of Iraq's pure beauty and authenticity, because Allah willed it to be so.

The plot revolves around the life of Jawad. His father is a corpse washer and all the men before him were washers too. In Islam, after we die and before we are buried, our bodies must be purified. Jawad's father is the one who does this purification upon the dead. Truly, it is one of the most rewarding professions in our deen. Jawad, though has lost his faith long before we meet him and has no desire to wash. Through this lens, we learn about the Gulf War and the Iraq War / US occupation and much of what happened in between. I was beyond fascinated.

Equally as fascinating, Jawad and his family are Shia Muslims. I'm Sunni Muslim but in my masjid we don't really ascribe ourselves or each other to these labels. I do know many Muslims hate each other over these sects. Despite these historical and current tensions between the sects, I've always had an appreciation for Shia Islam that's hard for me to explain. You'd need to know the reasoning behind the original split that created these sects to fully understand. Simply put, they're passion and love for Allah cannot be ignored.

Antoon wrote the book in his first language, my favorite language, Arabic. He is the only author I have experienced who translated their own work! How amazing is that? He himself even admits that this comes with special artistic privileges & this is so evident as you read the book. As someone who studies Arabic, i can see how the English words originated within Arabic ideas. It is the most beautiful language and can only be translated beautifully by someone who knows both languages.

I have not been so moved by a novel the way this novel has moved me in years.

The Life of The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh): Calling the Tribes to Islam, the Allegiances of Aqaba and Migration to Madinah

The Prophet Arrives in Madinah

The Muslims of Madinah heard that the Messenger of Allah had set off for Madinah from Makkah. Therefore, they went to the place called Harra after the morning prayer every day and waited there impatiently until the weather got very hot at noon.

One day, they waited for the arrival of the Prophet for a long time as usual and returned when they saw that it became very hot.

Meanwhile, a Jewish person who was on the roof of his house saw a few people in white clothes walking through the hot desert, mirages and fog. He knew that Muslims were waiting for the Messenger of Allah. He could not help shouting, “O community of Arabs! The person you have been waiting for is coming!” giving Muslims the good news.

This good news traveled like lightning among the streets of Madinah. The city was like a place of festival because the person who offered peace and happiness to humanity was coming. Muslims took their weapons and ran toward that area.

They reached the Prophet and Hazrat Abu Bakr while they were resting in the shade of a date tree. Hazrat Abu Bakr was standing near the Prophet. They greeted the Master of the Universe, for whom they had been waiting excitedly, impatiently and longingly, who was in a white garment, and started to stare at his luminous blessed face.

After having a rest for a while in the shade of the date tree, the Messenger of Allah and his friends proceeded to the village of Quba, which was to the right of Madinah, together with the people who came from Madinah to welcome them.

It was a very hot day in the month of Rabiulawwal.

The sun was sending its arrows made of fire down to the earth. The Messenger of Allah and the group of believers with him arrived at the village of Quba, which was an hour away from the city of Madinah, before noon. He went to the house of Kulthum b. Hidam, the leader of Banu Amr b. Awf. The fast journey on the scorching sand exhausted the Prophet. He decided to stay in Quba for a while due to the wishes of the people who wanted to talk to him.

The Prophet stayed in the house of Kulthum b. Hidam, who was quite old, at night and went to the house of Sa’d b. Haythama, who was a single Companion, during the day in order to talk to the Muslims. Besides, the other single Companions stayed in his house, too. Therefore, his house was called “Daru’l-Uzab [the House of Bachelors]”.

Hazrat Ali Rejoins the Prophet

Hazrat Ali had stayed in Makkah in order to return the valuables and goods that the Qurayshis entrusted to the Prophet to their owners due to the order of the Prophet.

Hazrat Ali fulfilled this duty and left Makkah three days after the Prophet left. He rejoined the Prophet when he was in Quba. His feet had swollen and blistered because he had walked all the way. The Prophet hugged him in tears, prayed for him so that his feet will recover and rubbed them with his hand. God Almighty cured his feet at once. The blisters and pains in his feet disappeared.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE QUBA MOSQUE

The Messenger of Allah stayed for more than ten nights in the house of Banu Amr b. Awf. During this period, he established the Quba Mosque and performed prayers in it.

Although some Muslims built a mosque for themselves before the mosque established by the Prophet, the first mosque built for the community of Islam is the Quba Mosque.

The Messenger of Allah himself worked in the construction of this lofty mosque, which was built on Kulthum b. Hidam’s land, where he dried his dates. Once, the Prophet was carrying a very heavy stone. One of the Companions approached him and said, “O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you. Give it to me.” The Prophet said to him, “No, I won’t! Get another stone.”, expressing that he got pleasure from working. Thus, he served as a model with his efforts and hard work along with his other good attributes like, worship, taqwa, loyalty, mercy, resoluteness and courage.

Observing his efforts and hard work, Muslims worked enthusiastically without showing any signs of laziness or fatigue. The Prophet did not stop working until the construction of the mosque finished; he did not treat himself differently from other Muslims.

Importance and Superiority of the Quba Mosque

The Quba Mosque is a blessed monument of the luminous and magnificent period that started with the migration of the Messenger of Allah and that continued especially with his arrival at the village of Quba. Therefore, it was defined as a “mosque of taqwa” in the Quran. The following is stated in the relevant verse:

“There is a mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety; it is more worthy of thy standing forth (for prayer) therein. In it are men who love to be purified; and Allah loveth those who make themselves pure!”

The Respectable Prophet always went to the Quba Mosque on Saturdays during his life sometimes on foot and sometimes riding and performed prayers there. Besides, he encouraged believers to perform prayers there giving the good news that a person who performed prayers in that blessed mosque in a nice and clean way would receive the reward of an umra.

The Quba Mosque is significant and important because it was built in a period when the barriers in front of Islam started to be removed gradually and the development and advancement of Islam started.

Suhayb b. Sinan Goes to Quba

Suhayb b. Sinan was one of the helpless and lonely Muslims who were exposed to the tortures of polytheists. When the Prophet was given the permission to migrate to Madinah, he could not find an opportunity to leave Makkah.

When he saw that Hazrat Ali was about to migrate, he packed his things, and set off. When some Makkans saw him, they followed him and said, “When you came here, you were poor; you became rich here. You want to take your wealth with you. We will not let you do it!”

Acting upon the courage based on his belief, Suhayb dismounted and took his arrows out of his bag. He said to the Qurayshis, who were trying to stop him from migrating, “You know that I am one of the best archers among you. I will shoot all of my arrows; if I run out of arrows, I will draw my sword! As long as I have one of them with me, I will not let you approach me!”

The polytheists could not answer this heroic call back. They knew that this hero of Islam would not surrender easily. On the one hand, there was Suhayb b. Sinan, who stood up with the courage supported by his belief; on the other hand, there were polytheists who were afraid due to the polytheism in their hearts.

Then, Suhayb made them this offer:

“Will you let me go if I show you where all my wealth is and leave it to you?”

The polytheists, who loved worldly possessions so much, said, “Yes...”

Hazrat Suhayb left his wealth to them and migrated on the way of Allah in order to practice his religion and belief freely.

He rejoined the Messenger of Allah in Quba in the middle of the month of Rabiulawwal. He had a pain in his eye on the way and he was very hungry. There was a bunch of fresh palms with leaves in front of the Prophet, Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar. Hazrat Suhayb started to eat the fresh dates immediately.

Hazrat Umar said, “O Messenger of Allah! Do you see Suhayb? He says he has a pain in his eye and he is eating fresh dates!”

When the Messenger of Allah said, “O Suhayb! You have a pain in your eye but you are eating fresh dates.”, he said, “O Messenger of Allah! I am eating them with the sound part of my eye.” This witty answer made the Prophet smile.

Then, Hazrat Suhayb said, “O Messenger of Allah! When you left Makkah, the polytheists imprisoned me. I gave them my wealth and bought (saved) my family and myself!”

The Messenger of Allah said, “Suhayb won! Suhayb won! Abu Yah¬ya! The sale turned out to be profitable! The sale turned out to be profitable!” He gave the good news and made Suhayb very happy.

Then, the following verse was sent down:

“And there is the type of man who gives his life to earn the pleasure of Allah; and Allah is full of kindness to (His) devotees.”

They Leave Quba

After staying in Quba more than ten nights, the Messenger of Allah set off to Madinah on Friday. He was on his camel, Qaswa. Hazrat Abu Bakr was behind him; there were about one hundred people with weapons from Banu Najjar, from the tribe of his maternal uncles and many Muslims of Madinah on the right and on the left.

The scene was challenging, pleasing and hopeful. The Messenger of Allah, who was left alone in Makkah, was being accompanied by hundreds of luminous people! They were uttering takbirs (Allahu Akbar); their hearts were full of joy. They had waited for the Prophet, who presented them with the real belief and Islam, which is the source of the happiness in the world and in the hereafter, impatiently for days. Now, they were experiencing and feeling the unmatched joy of meeting him.

FIRST FRIDAY PRAYER IN MADINAH

During the journey, the Messenger of Allah turned to the left side and reached the land of Banu Salim b. Awf. When they arrived at a place called Ranuna, it was time for the Friday prayer. The Prophet dismounted his camel in the middle of the Ranuna valley, the place of the Friday Mosque, and performed the Friday prayer there.

It was the first Friday prayer the Prophet performed in Madinah.

The Prophet recited two sermons, one after the other, there. After thanking and praising Allah, he addressed the Muslims as follows:

“O people! Make preparations for the hereafter when you are healthy. You know very well that every one of you will be asked about the sheep that you left without a shepherd on the Day of Judgment. Then, God Almighty will say to him, without any intermediary, directly, ‘Did My Messenger not come and inform you? I gave you property and I granted you many bounties. What did you prepare for yourself?’ That person will look to the right and left but will not see anything. When he looks to the front, he will see nothing but Hell! Then, anyone who can save himself from the fire even with a half date should give it away at once. If he cannot find a half date, he should save himself by kalima at-tayyiba [nice word]. Through it, one good deed is rewarded by ten to seven hundred times. May Allah’s peace, mercy and bounties be on you!”

The Second Sermon

The Messenger of Allah stated the following in his second sermon:

“I praise Allah. I praise Allah and I ask His help. We took refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and our bad deeds. He whom Allah guides is rightly guided; but he whom Allah leaves to stray,- for him wilt thou find no protector to lead him to the Right Way.

I witness that there is no god but Allah. He is One; He has no partners.

The best word is the word of Allah. A person whose heart Allah decorates with the Quran, whom Allah includes in Islam though he was an unbeliever, who prefers the Quran to other words will definitely be saved.

Doubtlessly, the Book of Allah is the most beautiful and eloquent word. Love what Allah loves. Love Allah heartily. Do not get tired of the word of Allah and mentioning the names and attributes of Allah. Do not let the word of Allah cause gloom in your heart because the word of Allah distinguishes the best ones among everything. It informs you about the best deeds, the prophets, who are the most distinguished people, and the best stories; it states what is halal and haram. Worship Allah and do not associate any partners with Him. Fear Him truly.

Do good deeds and confirm them with your tongue.

Love one another with the word of Allah. Know very well that Allah punishes severely those who break their promise.

May Allah’s peace be upon you!”

In the first pledge of Aqaba, the Muslims of Madinah had promised to protect the Messenger of Allah fully when he arrived in their land.

After staying in Quba for a while, the Messenger of Allah was about to enter Madinah, the heart of their land; it was time for them to keep their promise.

Therefore, the Messenger of Allah finished the second sermon by stating that God Almighty would punish severely those who broke their promise.

So, the latest development in the never-ending troubles of the Egemen family (surely their mansion is cursed) is that Papa Egemen may or may not recover from the poisoning that turned him into a vegetable and, his young wife Ece, has been accused of poisoning him and taken off to jail (we, are viewers, know it’s the evil Yasemin, wife of oldest brother, who’s actually responsible.)

And then this happens.

Hazan: I know we don’t have anything to talk about since it looks like my sis is accused of trying to do your dad in. I mean, you are my friend/my boyfriend’s brother. But this is your Dad. So I am not really expecting anything.

Yagiz: Well, whatever your sister is accused of, doesn’t mean I can’t be there for you, who are your own individual person and are hurting. Also, I am not so sure Ece did that because she’s dumb but not evil, so I am gonna have people investigate because I want the right person to be punished. Because I have a functional brain.

Hazan: OMG! Sinan! My true love, my soulmate, my honey bunny of love! Pls hug me, I feel so sad and bad. I don’t ask that you support or believe Ece, but can you support me and make me feel a little better. After all, your bro, who’s not even my boyfriend, assured me he still cares (platonically platonically platonically!) for me and will be there for me. Surely, you can just hug me, stroke my hair, and keep your dumb mouth shut? I mean, you supposedly love me!

Sinan: Begone, foul wench! Your sister poisoned my father!!! Even though you are not your sister, I cannot comfort you in your grief over your screwed up family for that would be WRONG!!!! Stroking your hair is like climbing Mt Everest. By neither word nor deed will I be supportive or caring. For I am STUDLY and gazing at me should be enough! Expecting emotional support is gonna cost you extra.

OK, I obviously wildly exaggerate, but this pretty much sums up ep 28. Sinan is not a horrible person, but he’s an immature, put-yourself-first, concerned only with his emotions guy. He’s a bad fit for Hazan but, frankly, she with her strong will and crazy family, and need for support, is a bad fit for him. He needs a fun uncomplicated girl so he can make big romantic gestures and have things go easy. He needs someone who will not just put him first, but put only him anywhere. He also never uses his brain and is ruled by pure impulse and emotions. Hazan is stubbornly holding on to her dream, to her idealized image of him, but it keeps getting punctured by reality. And I don’t think he really loves her either. But they are both too young to stick together out of delusion and habit.

Also, this is a lesson to Yagiz - he put super-human efforts to reunite them, sacrificing his heart in the process, because he thought they genuinely loved each other - but he shouldn’t have meddled. Any relationship propped by a third party, where the couple is incompatible in personalities or world-view, is doomed. He sent Hazan to his brother so she’d be happy, but she won’t. And he’s gonna have to watch that.

P.S. That family is batting 50% at most as far as success in raising children, and even that is doubtful. Selin is a psycho who barely sees other people as people and currently had someone smuggle Ece “pretnatal vitamins” that are actually an abortifacient because she wants her to lose her baby. Gekhan found out his wife made his Dad a vegetable and won’t say a word because he doesn’t want to be implicated. Sinan is immature and shallow but at least he loves his family, probably because he is under Yagiz’s influence. And Yagiz is a good son by any measure, but that is probably despite the family, seeing that he’s adopted and was also sent away to boarding school in the US for over a decade.

Without a doubt, the Bosphorus is what makes Istanbul tick, a unique destination uniting two continents and millennia of human history. Assume you were to only see one place in Istanbul, that will definitely be the Galata bridge, across the Golden Horn. It links two of the city’s oldest districts and it is lined with traditional fishermen boats which sell the most famous street food in all Istanbul – the fish sandwich, also known as balık ekmek.

Prepared on the spot, with fresh fish straight out of the Bosphorus grilled on the spot and seasoned in a bread bun with vegetables, this is the best snack to warm you up on a cold winter in Istanbul together with a hot glass of Turkish tea. Banichka and Kifla in Bulgaria

The cuisine in Bulgaria is one of the most delicious in Europe and is definitely a must-try. Thus, while you are spending some time in Bulgaria, you should definitely try fast food too. Among the best street options for traditional Bulgarian foods are the Banichka (Banitsa) and the Kifla.

The Banichka is a traditional Bulgarian salt pie made with a special type of phyllo dough and Bulgarian white cheese. In addition to that, you can get Boza, which is a wheat sour drink that is usually drank by locals while eating Banichka. The Banichka can be found in every bakery or street food stand and varies in types. The price of the Banichka is half the price of a Starbucks coffee and is absolutely worth the try!

The Kifla is another traditional street food in Bulgaria that is definitely worth the try. It is made out of nice puffy dough and is usually filled with rosehip marmalade, but you can also get it with chocolate or other types of marmalade. Thus, if you are craving something sweet you should definitely try it out! Also, it is not expensive and usually costs half the price of a Starbucks coffee.

Did you know there are 2 very different types of waffles within Belgium namely Brussels Waffles and Liège Waffles?

While Brussels waffles are lighter, thinner and are a perfect rectangle, Liege waffles are thicker, chewier and have uneven & caramelized edges!!! Though they’re named after 2 cities, you will get both types of waffles in all the cities! Quite amusingly, the very busy waffle kiosks close to the very busy tourist spots of Brussels – Grand Place & Mannekin Pis – are actually Liege waffles!

You can have the waffles plain or customize them with a gazillion toppings including whipped cream, icecream, fruit slices, syrups and more. My personal suggestion – skip ice cream on it – waffles are meant to be had warm and ice cream topping spoils the temperature and flavour of it! Best place & time would be a hot afternoon sitting down at Grand Place! The fresh, plain waffles cost €2, the ones with all the toppings go upto €6-7! Pre-packed waffles are available in most super-markets. While they are great souvenirs, they don’t even come close to the freshly prepared ones, right out of the waffle iron!

One of the things Spain is most famous for is Serrano ham.

Born and raised in this country, I have eaten Serrano ham from a young age in multiple ways, with melon, alone, with olive oil, in small squares with pasta or pizza, with peas, and many other ways. But perhaps the most common way to eat this delicacy is as part of a simple ham sandwich.

The Museo del Jamón chain of establishments – which can be found in some of the most central squares, avenues and streets of Madrid, the capital – knows this well. Thus, they have created a pack of 1 sandwich and 1 can of soda for € 2.5.

But you don’t have to go there to enjoy it. In any of the 17 Spanish regions, it is very easy to get the two main ingredients, bread, and ham, in a supermarket. The kg of ham is around € 15 to € 60 (depending on its age, how the pigs were fed, and the general quality of the product) but you will only need around 100 grams; and a good loaf of bread can be purchased for € 1. Boquerones in Southern Spain

Boquerones is Malaga’s most famous dish. No matter how you have them, boquerones have deep roots into the city’s culture, as far as the locals proudly call themselves by this name.

Boqueron, in translation, means anchovy. However, they are not what you would imagine when you think of an anchovy. Boquerones are bigger and fleshier fish, that grow between 9 and 12 centimetres long and are cooked from fresh and not preserved as their relatives do.

Everywhere you go in Malaga you will find boquerones: in the form of espetos – grilled on a skewer over an open fire, boquerones al limon – marinated in lemon and then deep fried, boquerones en vinagre – marinated in vinegar for 24 hours and served raw.

There is no complete holiday in Spain without having boquerones on the beach, accompanying a cold pint of beer. They are relatively cheap, with espetos costing between 5 and 7 euros, and a tapa of fried boquerones costing around 3-5 euros. There are some places in Malaga where you can even get them for 2 euros.

Bramborák in the Czech Republic

Bramborák is one of the most typical dishes of the Czech Republic, and one of the best street foods in Europe. Essentially a potato pancake, it consists of only a few ingredients and is not hard to make, just a little laborsome.

Bramborák is often sold at markets as popular street food. To have just one as a hearty snack is often a preferred way to making the potato pancakes at home and eating a plateful of them.

The best bramboráks should not be too oily, have crisp edges and a soft center. They have to be made from quality potatoes and smell of marjoram and garlic.

The price can be anything from a few crowns in villages to a 100 CZK and more in cities (especially Prague), even surpassing the price of a tall cappuccino at Starbucks. The price is often counted by weight.

Similar types of potato pancakes can be found in the whole Central and Eastern Europe and parts of Germany.

Cevapi in Serbia

If you find yourself in Serbia, but also in the entire Balkans, and ask the locals which street food to try, you will most likely get the answer cevapi!

Every chef has his own unique recipe and way of preparation, which makes his cevapi different and special. Generally, cevapi are made from pure beef or a mixture of beef and lamb or pork. The meat is finely minced and spiced with salt, ground pepper, and other spices. Then, it is shaped into rolls 8-10 cm long. It is grilled on BBQ over moderate heat to keep the meat juicy.

In a portion, there are 5 or 10 cevapi served in a bun or somun (specially prepared flatbread) with traditional side dishes such as onions, crushed peppers, and kajmak. But, it will also offer you other side dishes such as french fries, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, ketchup, sour cream, and others. Cevapi are very tasteful and juicy if you travel to Serbia, it’s must-taste street food.

The price of a small portion of cevapi (5 pcs) is about 250-300 rsd, which is around 2-2.2eur, similar to the price of coffee late in Starbucks.

Chimney cake in Budapest

Chimney cakes are one of the most popular street food in Europe, especially in the Christmas markets. While many people associate them with Prague, chimney cakes originally come from Hungary! The first known recipe of chimney cake comes from Transylvania (West-Romania, which was also part of the Kingdom of Hungary at that time) but this recipe didn’t include any sweetening. The sweet version of chimney cake was first born in 1795 when a Hungarian recipe suggested sugar coating.

So, what is a chimney cake exactly? It’s practically a sweet dough that is rolled in granulated sugar, wrapped around a cone and roasted over charcoal. During the baking process the sugar caramelizes so the crust will become golden brown on the outside and the sweet scent of caramelized sugar will catch your nose immediately. The last stop is choosing the coating, which is totally up to you. The most popular choices are coconuts, cinnamon, walnuts or chocolate, but nowadays ice cream filled chimney cakes are becoming more and more popular.

Even if you spend only a weekend in Budapest, you should try this traditional Hungarian street food! You will find many stalls across the city selling chimney cakes all year round. The price can vary a lot as you can get a small chimney cake for 300 HUF (0.8 EUR) at the kiosks around metro stations and main squares, while you can also spend up to 1,800 HUF (5 EUR) for a full-extra chimney cake at the Christmas markets.

Cig köfte in Turkey

If you are looking for a good vegan street food snack in Turkey, then look no further than spicy çiğ köfte to set your tastebuds alight. Originating from Eastern Turkey, this dish, according to local folklore, has apparently been enjoyed since the time of Abraham. In Turkish, çig means “raw” and köfte means “meatball”. “How on earth is that vegan?” I hear you ask. Well…

The original version of the dish was made with very finely ground beef or lamb however in 2009, the Turkish government banned the street sale of raw çiğ köfte, thereby leading to the now popular vegan version (for those still hankering after raw meaty goodness, the ‘original’ version of the dish is still served in a few specially licensed restaurants).

Çiğ köfte restaurants usually have a big burly man at the helm – no surprise when you consider the amount of physical work involved in making the dish. Bulgur wheat is kneaded into chopped onions, parsley and water until it all gets very soft. Huge dollops of tomato paste, pepper paste, red chilli flakes, urfa pepper flakes, cumin and sometimes walnuts are then added as everything continues to be kneaded until well combined.

The kneading process (which can take 30 – 90 minutes in some places) is supposed to ‘cook’ the mixture, making the end result look and taste very similar to meat. The good news is that most places have a çiğ köfte mix ready, so you won’t have to wait that long.

One thing is clear: anyone who visits the German capital Berlin cannot leave without trying a real Berlin Currywurst. This dish is as much a part of Berlin as the Brandenburg Gate and should definitely be an integral part of every Berlin itinerary.

The Berlin currywurst can be served in two ways. You either buy them as a snack in between. Then it is served as a chopped sausage in a tomato curry sauce.

Or you can order them in a restaurant. Then there is a large German sausage, which is also served with a curry tomato sauce. Of course, there are also fries and, depending on the restaurant, a small side salad.

The price of this Berlin specialty naturally changes depending on whether it is enjoyed as a snack or as a whole meal. As a snack, you can find them in some places for less than a Starbucks coffee. In the restaurant, they are often cheaper than many other dishes (usually fewer than 10 €) – but they still fill you up entirely.

Good news for all vegetarians: By now, you can even get the famous German sausage as a veggie version in many currywurst restaurants throughout Berlin.

Frites in Belgium

If there’s one thing you should know about Belgians, it’s that they absolutely love their ‘frietjes’. This potato dish known as chips or French(ed) fries exists in its ultimate version in the tiny Western-European country, where locals eat them at least once a week.

While they are often made at restaurants and at home to accompany an array of meat, fish or vegetable dishes, Belgians usually eat them straight from the ‘frietkot’. In the past those places looked like a shed/stall, but times have changed and now the golden deliciousness is mostly (but not always!) sold in a regular take-away restaurant – in Belgium known as a ‘frituur’.

We do not only eat frites though, we accompany them with a sauce of choice and some kind of deep-fried side dish (usually meat but nowadays there are many fish and vegetarian options as well).

To compare the price, a Starbucks Caffe Latte Grande will cost you €3,65 in Belgium. You can pick fries in a couple of sizes, usually setting you back between €1,50 and €2,50 for a package. Sauce will be about €0,80 and a side dish ranges from €1,50 to €4. This means you can get an entire meal for about €5-6. That’s about the same price as a McD menu, but a whole lot better!

Gyros in Greece

Gyro is my favorite wrap sandwich that is a staple of the Greek Cuisine with a variety of meat fillings and vegetable options. It is similar to my favorite German-ized fast food, Doner Kebab.

Gyro contains meat (that could be pork, lamb, beef or chicken) that is roasted and cut into paper-thin slices. These meat slices are then piled on pita bread and topped with onions, spices, tomatoes, roasted potatoes, cayenne pepper, and tzatziki. Tzatziki is a classic greek dressing made of strained yogurt and infused with cucumber, salt, pepper, garlic, and dill.

In Greek, gyros mean to turn and it refers to the vertical meat holder than turns and roasts the meat gradually.

Fun fact: Even though Gyros are one of the most famous Greek dishes, it’s one of the most mispronounced ones as well. It is pronounced as yee-roh. The G is silent since there is no letter G in the Greek language.

I had eaten gyros before but I understood its true flavors during my short but epic trip to Thessaloniki. The best part is this amazing and filling dish costs only around 3 euros, a Starbucks small cappuccino costs more than this!

Hot dogs in Iceland

What do you eat when you travel to one of the world’s most expensive countries? Hot dogs! As weird as it sounds, Hot dogs are Iceland’s most popular street food. Locals eat them, visitors eat them and even Bill Clinton ate them when he was in Reykjavik. You can find them in all the major streets in the capital Reykjavik.

I love the Icelandic hotdogs: grilled sausage, toasted soft bread, fried crispy onions, a mix of mustard and tomato dressing, all with the side of the stunning view of the city.

While Reykjavik city is not very budget-friendly, these hotdogs help a bit. You can get an average hotdog for about 4-5 USD, i.e. same price as a medium cappuccino in Starbucks. One of the fun facts about Iceland, aside from their cool Viking clap and Icelandic horses, is that there isn’t a Starbucks or McDonalds in their country.

Kapsalon in Netherlands and Belgium

Are you looking for a nice and greasy midnight meal after all those amazing (and strong) Belgian beers? Then you will HAVE to try a ‘Kapsalon’. This amazing meal literally means ‘’hairdresser’’ in Dutch and got its weird name after Nataniël Gomes, the owner of a hair salon, would regularly ask the owners of the Turkish restaurant down the road to make this exact dish. The dish made it onto the menu of the restaurant and soon became an absolute favourite in shawarma and doner restaurants in the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2017 kapsalon even became a fan favourite in Kathmandu after a Dutch chef introduced it in the Nepalese capital.

So what is a Kapsalon I hear you ask. Well, it is a layer of perfectly cooked fries, topped with doner meat and a massive layer of cheese. This is put under a grill for a few minutes so the cheese is deliciously melted over the meat and fries. On top of all this cheesiness you will get crispy salad and tomatoes and a massive squirt of garlic sauce. That, by definition, makes it a balanced meal – no?

Anyway – this calorie bomb is one of the most amazing fast food dishes I have ever had and everyone I ever introduced to this heavenly delicious dish has fallen in love with Kapsalon. If you visit Belgium, the Netherlands or apparently even Nepal, you need to try a Kapsalon!

Khachapuri in Georgia

Arguably the most internationally famous dishes in Georgian cuisine also happens to be one of the best fast food dishes to eat in the country — and that is khachapuri! Khachapuri, or cheese-stuffed bread, has countless different iterations throughout Georgia but still remains one of the favourite dishes in this Eastern European nation.

Khachapuri is available almost everywhere in Georgia, from streetside bakeries to finer dining establishments. While there are many different types of khachapuri that can be found throughout the country, arguably the most notable is Adjaruli khachapuri, a boat-shaped cheese bread filled with molten cheese and topped with a golden egg yolk and a pat of butter. Hailing from the Adjara region of Western Georgia, this decadent treat can be enjoyed at divey cafes or proper restaurants throughout the country and it is always delicious.

The most common type of khachapuri that one may find in a streetside bakery, however, is khachapuri Imeruli. This iteration is a bit more simple and is simply a round bread stuffed with cheese, however, it is nonetheless completely delicious.

So if you want to experience one of the most delicious street food dishes in Europe, then head to Georgia and sample a khachapuri!

Lahmajo in Armenia

Lahmajo is one of the most common street foods you’ll find in Armenia and it is known as an Armenian pizza here because of its flat nature and that it contains a lot of ingredients. In other parts of the world, many will refer to it as ‘lahmacun’ or ‘Turkish pizza’.

Originating in the Middle East, lahmajo received a huge boost and movement around the world with the Armenian diaspora and food enthusiasts enjoying this simple, yet tasty treat. One of the biggest perks about ordering lahmajo is that it merely takes minutes to prepare and cook and even fewer to consume!

On lahmajo, you will find minced meat marinated with spices and herbs, parsley, and tomato sauce. Sometimes, they will even include options that contain cheese or other ingredients. To have a truly Armenian experience, enjoy lahmajo with a glass or tan (Armenian salty yogurt drink) and lemon.

Another great thing about lahmajo is the price point. In Yerevan or Gyumri, the two largest cities in Armenia, you will pay around $0.50 for one at small kiosks and bakeries. If you order in a fancier restaurant or setting, it will be about $1 for one. It truly is a must-eat fast treat when you visit Armenia!

Langoș in Transylvania

It’s no secret that in this part of the world, South-Eastern Europe and the Balkans – we share a lot of recipes, be it homemade or street food. And if it’s so wide spread, you know it’s good.

Langoș (langoshi) is a traditional food in Transylvania, with Hungarian roots. Due to the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this delicious street food can be found from Poland down to Bulgaria, and from Czech Republic all through Croatia, Serbia and Slovakia. However, if you come to Dracula’s land, in Transylvania, it’s one of the “must eats”.

The Langoș is made from basic ingredients: flower, yeast, salt, water or milk, fried in oil. After trekking in the Carpathian Mountains it’s the perfect snack to compensate for all that workout. The advantage of this quick delicious dish is that you can have it with either sweet or savory toppings. Of course, if you are in Transylvania, you should definitely go for sour cream and garlic. But you can add ham, graded cheese, powdered sugar or delicious homemade jams.

You can find it around most pastry shops in cities like Brașov, Sighișoara and Sibiu and it is one of the most popular street foods in local fairs and traditional or medieval festivals in Europe. Since it’s a street food, it’s also cheap. A plain one can be around 8 Ron (less than 2 euro or 2 USD) and one with toppings can go up to double that price. Basically, between a Regular and a Grande latte.

Oysters in Bordeaux

You might not think of oysters as a street food, but in Bordeaux, oysters are one of the ultimate street foods found year round. Located just 30 miles from Bordeaux, the Bassin of Arcachon is famous for its oyster production. Unlike Brittany oysters that are sold in mass commercially, the Cap Ferret oysters of the Bassin of Arcachon are only sold directly to consumers at markets throughout the department, direct at the no-frills oyster shacks that dot the Bassin, and to very few restaurants locally. That’s because there’s only around 350 oyster farms producing a small production of 10,000 oysters per year.

Cap Ferret oysters are a Bordeaux specialty, and priced typically around just 1.50€ per oyster, are a bargain at that. You won’t find the oysters exported or sold at grocery stores, but you can find oyster producers selling their fresh oysters at local markets. Take your plate of 6 oysters with a glass of white Bordeaux to one of tiny tables set up to enjoy the oysters at. Typically at markets a plate of 6 oysters and a glass of white Bordeaux is just 6€ and Jennifer and Tim of Bordeaux Travel Guide say you’ll definitely feel like a local indulging in this Bordeaux tradition.

Paella in Spain

No trip to Spain is complete without digging into Paella. It is one of the oldest and most popular dishes in Spanish cuisine. I definitely knew about Paella before traveling to Spain but I learned about it more when I visited Valencia and Ibiza. My first tryst with Paella had taken place in a culinary fest (Sunday Farmers Market) in Johannesburg but I am not sure if I liked it. But what I ate in Valencia, the place which deserves all the credit for inventing the dish, was definitely worth remembering. I relished every bite of it. Though the rice is quite different to what we eat in India, the charm lies in the stock, the grain variety and the way of preparation.

The metal pan or “paellera”, in which Paella is made, is made from iron (cast iron preferred) or polished steel. It was interesting to learn that Paella gets its name from the vessel (wide, shallow traditional flat pan) in which it is prepared and served too. Paella is actually not about single serves but its is about many people eating together. So its very important to order your Paella as per the number of people who would be eating. At good restaurants, its might cost you somewhere between 20 to 35 Euros per head for a Paella meal without wine. Paella is not just staple food of Spain but street food too. It is available everywhere and one can relish it in its many recipes. One need not get confused about the variety and must go for it at 2-3 places. Every chef in Valencia has a story to tell when it comes to Paella, so you will not be disappointed.

A classic Paella is about simple and traditional flavors. The Sea food paella seems to be popular at most of the places but originally Valencia claims that it was originally cooked with rice and meat. And don’t you worry because you do get a vegetarian version too. Also, Paella has different tastes in different cities of Spain. What I ate in Ibiza was different than in Valencia but both were good.

Panelle in Sicily, Italy

Panelle is a ubiquitous street food snack that you will find all over the streets of Sicily, and especially in the city of Palermo. It’s quite a regional specialty, though, so if you go looking for it in other parts of Italy you’ll probably be disappointed. Panelle is made from a dough of chickpea flour, which is seasoned, fried and cut into squares. Since chickpeas have their origins in the Middle East, it’s believed that they were introduced to Sicily when Muslims conquered the island in the 9th century AD.

Vegetarians and vegans traveling to Italy will be happy to know that panelle is one of many vegan Italian street food snacks. The reason it’s my favorite is because it’s vegan yet also quite filling and full of protein. Sometimes you’ll see a slice of panelle stuffed into a bread roll and eaten as a sandwich. My favorite place to eat panelle is at the is Rosticceria Palermitana da Andrea, a little hole-in-the-wall eatery in the town of Noto.

Panzerotti in Southern Italy

Panzerotti are not only a popular street food in southern Italy, these deliciously filled, deep-fried dumplings are a statement and art, especially in Campania and Puglia where they are available in every corner. The otherwise already picky Italians are especially picky when it comes to this. And, of course Mama’s Panzerotti are the best!

These handmade, palm-sized delicacies are filled with mozzarella and tomato, with cime di rape or seafood. But also other creations are available in the Panifici. The ones filled with sweet chickpea purée are particularly interesting. Choose one from the display cabinet, take it and eat it immediately and warm while standing or sitting. Freshly deep-fried Panzerotti should be left to cool down a bit because the inside is extremely hot.

Pro Tip: Make sure you take several napkins with you. The delicious filling likes to drip out.

Depending on its size, a Panzerotto is a whole meal and very filling. With prices between 1,50€ and 3€ you are well fed. Order a cafe for 90 cents afterwards and you are happy! Guaranteed!

Patatas Bravas in Spain

One of my favourite European dishes is patatas bravas from Spain. It’s a very popular tapas dish that consists of fried potatoes cut into irregular cubes and served warm with a spicy tomato sauce. While it originated in Madrid, you can find it in restaurants and tapas bars all over Spain, especially in Seville. It usually costs around €5 (in comparison, a cup of coffee costs around €1.50 in Spain).

One thing I love about patatas bravas is that it’s so simple, you can easily make it at home when you’re missing Spanish food! All you need are potatoes, onions, garlic, tomatoes, sugar, paprika, and chili powder. Once you’ve roasted the potatoes, you just need to mix everything else in a boiling pan to create the sauce. Not only is this dish very filling, it’s also super flavorful — imaging french fries with ketchup, but a lot classier and tastier. So next time you visit Spain, make sure to give patatas bravas a try!

Piadina in Italy

There are so many delicious dishes to try in the region of Emilia-Romagna, in Northern Italy. However, it is safe to state that “piadina” is an institution. When travelling to Bologna, to Rimini, and any city in between, make sure you taste this traditional Italian street food.

Piadina is a flat disc of bread, very thin in some cities and thicker in others. The piadina is warmed up, folded in half, and filled with different ingredients, such as cold cuts, cheese and vegetables.

While the classics are certainly reliable, such as prosciutto ham and mozzarella, make sure you explore some of the local delicacies, such as the salty “porchetta” ham or bresaola, grilled vegetables, aged or smoked cheeses.

The traditional piadina is filled with prosciutto crudo (you may know it as Parma ham), a soft cheese called squacquerone, and rocket salad. It’s the perfect combination of salty, fresh and bitter flavors. Just thinking about it makes me crave it!

A piadina costs between 4 and 7 EUR, depending on the ingredients and on the location of the restaurant.

Pierogi is the best street food in Poland. In fact, these are the tasty little dumplings that originated mainly from Poland and is fairly popular in Eastern Europe. Once, in Poland, you can find pierogi of different varieties and fillings. They are super easily available and are very cheap.

Pierog is generally semi-circular dumplings made of dough and is filled with plenty of choices like chicken, pork, soya, tofu or sometimes you may get to taste chocolate-filled Pierogi as well.

In fact, tourists are spoilt for choice for places to try pierogi and there are endless types of Pierogi to sample. Polish dishes are often difficult to understand but pierogi could be a safer option to choose from. A plate of pierogi generally cost from 3-5 Euros depending on the place you are having.

Infact, Pierogi in Poland is as similar to Tapas food in Spain or Enchiladas in Mexico.

Placki Ziemniaczane in Poland

Potato Pancakes, called in Polish as Placki Ziemniaczane or Placki Kartoflane are one of the famous dishes in Poland. Although it has now become a popular fast food item, Potato Pancakes is a traditional Polish dish from Mazovia region, which originated as a substitute for meat for Catholics who cooked them on Fridays.

Gradually, the recipe of these delicious pancakes spread far and wide, with people developing various forms of these Pancakes. The Jews in Poland and Europe prepare Latkes, which is a type of Placki.

I tasted them first at Poznan, which was one of my day trips from Warsaw, and I completely fell in love with the dish. No wonder, I had them many times after that, throughout my journey, every day. The are not only delicious, but far better than plain pancakes. Also, the portion size is large and filling for one, especially as they are usually served with sour cream.

They are available everywhere in Poland, with the cheapest and the best ones in Milk Bars, where a plate of Potato Pancakes will cost you less than 3 or 4 Euros. You can have it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and you will feel energized for a long time! Also, better to have them with Borscht(Clear Beetroot soup).

Souvlaki in Athens

Souvlaki is a classic street food option in Athens and all over Greece that comprises tender meat cooked on a skewer and either served on a stick with sides or in a heartily-filled pita as a gyros (pronounced “year-os”). This meat is juicy and delicious with little crispy bits that have been left to cook a little longer, and when it’s served ‘apo ola’ (with everything) it comes with tzatziki, tomato, onions and fries all wrapped up in a fluffy pita. This makes for a tasty, cheap and cheerful lunch, that comes in at just €3-3.50 in Athens and even cheaper on the islands.

There are souvlaki restaurants and takeaways all over Athens so you’ll never have to search far to find yummy gyros and they’re perfect for those strapped for time or cash! I would suggest sitting down to eat your souvlaki though, as they can be a little tricky to eat on-the-go without getting tzatziki all over your face!

Tortilla de Patatas in Spain

Tapas bars are not just places to eat, but also an integral part of Spanish culture where you will often find large, loud groups of families and friends, and that’s without the music. You will be hard pressed to pass through any Spanish city, town or village and not find a tapas bar. Spanish tapas are little plates of various finger foods which are a classic Spanish food dish that is usually accompanied by some kind of refreshment, such as soft drink, beer or wine. 2×4 tapas plus a whole bottle of wine can set you back about as much as a single large cup of coffee at Starbucks.

One of the most common tapas is ‘tortilla de patatas’. This classic Spanish omelette is filled with a scrumptious, gooey potato and onion mix and is cut into little squares and served on French baguette which makes it really easy to eat as finger food.

What I like most about tapas is they can constitute as a full meal if you have enough of them, and considering the variety on offer, eating out at a Spanish tapas bar is one of my favourite all-round experiences when visiting Spain.

Zapiekanka in Poland

There’s nothing not to like about this Polish street food. Zapiekanka is an open-faced sandwich (usually made with plain baguette cut lengthwise) topped with sautéed white mushrooms and a generous helping of cheese. It is served hot with ketchup and is one of the best street foods in Poland!

Zapiekanka has its origins in the austere times Poland faced in the 1970s when even the most basic ingredients were difficult to come by. And it is popular even today and is available across Poland, Krakow being the hub where you will find a Zapiekanka stall in almost every major street. You cannot miss it. A stop at a Zapiekanka stall is also included in most food tours in Krakow.

While the recipe remains the same across vendors, there can be a slight variation with some vendors using additional ingredients (meat, pickled cucumbers, olives etc.) and sauces (BBQ sauce, Garlic sauce).

Zapienkanka is hearty, filling and cheap making it one of the best street foods in Poland. The price ranges between 1-2 Euros depending on the toppings. Don’t forget to try it when you visit Poland.

People who do not believe in Allah have an idea. This idea is called the “theory of evolution”. The people who believe in the theory of evolution are called “evolutionists”.

The person who has proposed the theory of evolution was called Charles Darwin and he lived about 150 years ago. Darwin did not believe that Allah created all living things. According to him, everything happened on its own and purely by accident. He thought that creatures changed shape into other creatures and this is how all the creatures came about. This means, according to Darwin, that one day, fish turned into reptiles by chance. Another day by more luck, reptiles started to fly thus becoming birds. According to the story that Darwin proposed, humans were formed from apes. This means that, to Darwin, your ancestor was an ape!

As is stated elsewhere, the tiniest part that makes up animate and inanimate things is the atom. This means that in reality, you are made up of billions of atoms that have come together.

When earth appeared for the first time, there were no creatures on it. There were only some inanimate things. Evolutionists—believers in Darwin—say that one day some of these atoms came together by chance. This means that there was a strong wind or maybe a cyclone one day after earth was formed, and it helped these atoms come together. What happened to these atoms after that, you ask?

According to Darwin’s story, these atoms joined to make cells. As you know, every living thing is made up of cells. The cells unite to make our eyes, ears, blood, heart, and in short, all of our body and the cells are very complex. It is impossible for something so complex to be made of atoms that have come together by chance.

In a cell, there are hundreds of different tiny organs. We could relate the cell to an enormous factory except that we have to remember that it is organic and not mechanical; it is just a way of speaking.

In a cell, there are manufacturers, transporters for the materials, entrance and exit gates, production centers, message carriers, energy control centers, etc. Well, do you think that it is possible for a factory to form all by itself, with stones, soil, and water coming together after a possible storm and all of it by chance? Of course not! Everyone would laugh at such a ridiculous claim. Nevertheless, evolutionists do make a claim that is just as ridiculous by saying, “the cell was formed by chance”.

As stated in the evolutionists’ allegation, these cells formed living things when they came together by some kind of luck.

Let them get a huge barrel. Allow them to put inside this barrel all the atoms that they wish. Permit them to put inside the barrel whatever else their hearts desire. Let them put inside the barrel all the things necessary to make a living being. Then they can either warm up or electrify this barrel. Allow them to carry out whatever they want freely. They can keep watch over the barrel for millions of years. (They can pass the task to younger evolutionists, as their lifetimes would not be enough.)

What would happen as a result of all this?

Do you think that lambs, violets, cherries, bunnies, bees, melons, cats, dogs, squirrels, roses, plums, strawberries, fish, elephants, giraffes, and lions could come out of this barrel? Could a person who thinks, becomes joyful, becomes excited, enjoys listening to music and reading books come out of this barrel?

Of course not!

Neither could anyone like the professors keeping watch over the barrel emerge. Not only could a professor not emerge, not even one of the professor’s trillions of cells could emerge.

Atoms are lifeless. Can lifeless matter link together to produce a living, laughing, thinking being?

Could an intelligent person believe such a thing? Of course, no living thing could come out of that barrel. That is impossible, because living things aren’t made up of lifeless matter coming together by coincidence. Allah created all living things. Allah decided to create humans, mountains, lakes, lambs, lions, and flowers when there was nothing around, and He has created everything from nothingness just by giving the order “Be!”

The Life of The Prophet Muhammad: Calling the Tribes to Islam, the Allegiances of Aqaba and Migration to Madinah

The Prophet Arrives in Madinah

One day, they waited for the arrival of the Prophet for a long time as usual and returned when they saw that it became very hot.

Meanwhile, a Jewish person who was on the roof of his house saw a few people in white clothes walking through the hot desert, mirages, and fog. He knew that Muslims were waiting for the Messenger of Allah. He could not help shouting, “O community of Arabs! The person you have been waiting for is coming!” giving Muslims the good news.

This good news traveled like lightning among the streets of Madinah. The city was like a place of the festival because the person who offered peace and happiness to humanity was coming. Muslims took their weapons and ran toward that area.

They reached the Prophet and Hazrat Abu Bakr while they were resting in the shade of a date tree. Hazrat Abu Bakr was standing near the Prophet. They greeted the Master of the Universe, for whom they had been waiting excitedly, impatiently and longingly, who was in a white garment and started to stare at his luminous blessed face.

It was a very hot day in the month of Rabiulawwal.

Hazrat Ali Rejoins the Prophet

Hazrat Ali had stayed in Makkah in order to return the valuables and goods that the Qurayshis entrusted to the Prophet to their owners due to the order of the Prophet.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE QUBA MOSQUE

The Messenger of Allah stayed for more than ten nights in the house of Banu Amr b. Awf. During this period, he established the Quba Mosque and performed prayers in it.

Although some Muslims built a mosque for themselves before the mosque established by the Prophet, the first mosque built for the community of Islam is the Quba Mosque.

The Messenger of Allah himself worked in the construction of this lofty mosque, which was built on Kulthum b. Hidam’s land, where he dried his dates. Once, the Prophet was carrying a very heavy stone. One of the Companions approached him and said, “O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you. Give it to me.” The Prophet said to him, “No, I won’t! Get another stone.”, expressing that he got pleasure from working. Thus, he served as a model with his efforts and hard work along with his other good attributes like worship, taqwa, loyalty, mercy, resoluteness, and courage.

Importance and Superiority of the Quba Mosque

“There is a mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety; it is more worthy of thy standing forth (for prayer) therein. In it are men who love to be purified; Allah loveth those who make themselves pure!”

The Quba Mosque is significant and important because it was built in a period when the barriers in front of Islam started to be removed gradually and the development and advancement of Islam started.

Suhayb b. Sinan Goes to Quba

Suhayb b. Sinan was one of the helpless and lonely Muslims who were exposed to the tortures of polytheists. When the Prophet was given permission to migrate to Madinah, he could not find an opportunity to leave Makkah.

When he saw that Hazrat Ali was about to migrate, he packed his things and set off. When some Makkans saw him, they followed him and said, “When you came here, you were poor; you became rich here. You want to take your wealth with you. We will not let you do it!”

Acting upon the courage based on his belief, Suhayb dismounted and took his arrows out of his bag. He said to the Qurayshis, who was trying to stop him from migrating, “You know that I am one of the best archers among you. I will shoot all of my arrows; if I run out of arrows, I will draw my sword! As long as I have one of them with me, I will not let you approach me!”

The polytheists could not answer this heroic callback. They knew that this hero of Islam would not surrender easily. On the one hand, there was Suhayb b. Sinan, who stood up with the courage supported by his belief; on the other hand, there were polytheists who were afraid due to the polytheism in their hearts.

Then, Suhayb made them this offer:

“Will you let me go if I show you where all my wealth is and leave it to you?”

The polytheists, who loved worldly possessions so much, said, “Yes...”

Hazrat Suhayb left his wealth to them and migrated on the way of Allah in order to practice his religion and belief freely.

Hazrat Umar said, “O Messenger of Allah! Do you see Suhayb? He says he has a pain in his eye and he is eating fresh dates!”

Then, Hazrat Suhayb said, “O Messenger of Allah! When you left Makkah, the polytheists imprisoned me. I gave them my wealth and bought (saved) my family and myself!”

The Messenger of Allah said, “Suhayb won! Suhayb won! Abu Yah¬ya! The sale turned out to be profitable! The sale turned out to be profitable!” He gave good news and made Suhayb very happy.

Then, the following verse was sent down:

“And there is the type of man who gives his life to earn the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is full of kindness to (His) devotees.”

They Leave Quba

After staying in Quba for more than ten nights, the Messenger of Allah set off to Madinah on Friday. He was on his camel, Qaswa. Hazrat Abu Bakr was behind him; there were about one hundred people with weapons from Banu Najjar, from the tribe of his maternal uncles and many Muslims of Madinah on the right and on the left.

The scene was challenging, pleasing and hopeful. The Messenger of Allah, who was left alone in Makkah, was being accompanied by hundreds of luminous people! They were uttering takbirs (Allahu Akbar); their hearts were full of joy. They had waited for the Prophet, who presented them with the real belief and Islam, which is the source of happiness in the world and in the hereafter, impatiently for days. Now, they were experiencing and feeling the unmatched joy of meeting him.

FIRST FRIDAY PRAYER IN MADINAH

It was the first Friday prayer the Prophet performed in Madinah.

The Prophet recited two sermons, one after the other, there. After thanking and praising Allah, he addressed the Muslims as follows:

“O, people! Make preparations for the hereafter when you are healthy. You know very well that every one of you will be asked about the sheep that you left without a shepherd on the Day of Judgment. Then, God Almighty will say to him, without any intermediary, directly, ‘Did My Messenger not come and inform you? I gave you property and I granted you many bounties. What did you prepare for yourself?’ That person will look to the right and left but will not see anything. When he looks to the front, he will see nothing but Hell! Then, anyone who can save himself from the fire even with a half date should give it away at once. If he cannot find a half date, he should save himself by kalima at-tayyiba [nice word]. Through it, one good deed is rewarded by ten to seven hundred times. May Allah’s peace, mercy, and bounties be on you!”

The Second Sermon

The Messenger of Allah stated the following in his second sermon:

I witness that there is no god but Allah. He is One; He has no partners.

Do good deeds and confirm them with your tongue.

Love one another with the word of Allah. Know very well that Allah punishes severely those who break their promise.

May Allah’s peace be upon you!”

In the first pledge of Aqaba, the Muslims of Madinah had promised to protect the Messenger of Allah fully when he arrived in their land.

After staying in Quba for a while, the Messenger of Allah was about to enter Madinah, the heart of their land; it was time for them to keep their promise.

Therefore, the Messenger of Allah finished the second sermon by stating that God Almighty would punish severely those who broke their promise.
