One day, when he was stronger, he was going to kill this man.

It took his mother a long time to come back. When she did she was freshly bathed. The scent of clean soap clinging to her. She had a limp and a ring of livid bruises around her neck. Attacking him outright was out of the question. That would only garner punishment from the Madam for both him and Meng Shi. He needed something subtler. “I bought it for you didn’t I? Don’t sound like such an old man. Always worrying about money. That’s Mama’s job.”
In that case he was going to eat every bit of it. Down to the pit.

He bit into the peach. Juice ran down his chin as he chewed. It was the best thing he had eaten in this life thus far. Sweeter even than the peaches he used to buy from the grocery store.
