Imagine being a construction worker doing normal construction work and your colleague comes to work with a print out of a website going "hey btw I just found out my music is a huge deal in South Africa but they all thought I was dead" and that's how you find out your colleague's two albums (that you might or might not have known about beforehand) are bigger than Elvis in a foreign country and your colleague gets to fly over there and play sold out concerts and then just returns to his job like nothing ever happened. That's what it must have been like working with Sixto Rodriguez.

God everyone I love deeply like Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Sinead O’ Connor, Jim Morrison, Sixto Rodriquez, Joni Mitchell, Hozier all sing with such passion and emotion and through that wisdom- they use their voices to speak in such a language of such incomparable clarity, that what every man experiences in soul but just simply needed deciphered for them. What once becomes oh so clear. They are angels as much as poets in the manner their truths falls from such a foreign tongue in the way it has never yet been expressed before, but surpasses need for mere words as sung in captive song. Their deep rooted feelings tie to the listener, leave a mark so deep in us and leave us forever changed. Those are my favorite artists of all.

Sixto Rodriguez, the Subject of “Searching for Sugar Man,” Dies at 81
Sixto Rodriguez, the Detroit-born musician who found fame after the release of 2012’s “Searching for Sugar Man,” has died, his family said.
He was 81; no cause of death was given.
“It is with great sadness that we … announce that Sixto Diaz Rodriguez has passed away” Aug. 8, they said in a statement. “ … May his dear soul rest in peace.”
Recording as Rodriguez, the musician released two albums, 1970’s Cold Fact and 1971’s Coming from Reality, and faded into obscurity. Unbeknownst to him, however, the albums had made him a legend in Australia and South Africa.
“He created an entire world in his music full of mystique, color, romance and humor,” Australian musician Hamish Anderson said on social media. “Thank you for sharing your magic - farewell Sugar Man.”
Rodriguez found acclaim, and concert audiences, in America - despite rumors he was dead - with the release of “Searching for Sugar Man,” though he never returned to the studio.
“The world was instantly more grandiose and magical when you entered the room,” Light in the Attic Records said in a statement.
“Your songs and words were brutally honest and raw to the core, like one of your favorite artists, Jimmy Reed. … We’ll miss you more than you can ever imagine. Rodriguez, thanks for making the world a better place. Rest in peace.”

Rodriguez - Inner City Blues Earlier this week Sixto Rodriguez died, a name which may mean nothing to the average music listener until 2012’s documentary ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ came out. It chronicles the search of a singer-songwriter from the 70’s, who made protest songs with little to no sale in America. However, due to a stroke of fate, one of his albums ended up in South Africa, where he inspired a whole generation.
May he rest in peace.

Searching for Sugar Man singer Rodriguez dies at 81 | Searching for Sugar Man | The Guardian
Rodriguez, the singer-songwriter whose unlikely career was the subject of Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, has died at 81.
The news was announced on his official site with his cause of death unknown. “It is with great sadness that we at Sugarman.org announce that Sixto Diaz Rodriguez has passed away earlier today,” the official statement read. “We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his daughters – Sandra, Eva and Regan – and to all his family. Rodriguez was 81 years old. May His Dear Soul Rest In Peace.”
The Michigan-born musician had struggled to sell many copies of his first two albums in the US in the 1970s and so quit to take on manual work. But his music gained popularity elsewhere in places such as Botswana, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
His cult popularity in Australia led to a 1979 tour of the continent while in South Africa, a compilation album went platinum as a rumour started that he had killed himself.
It wasn’t until 1997 that he discovered his fame in South Africa after his daughter found information online. He then went on tour in the country. Further fame followed when his song Sugar Man was covered by Paolo Nutini and South African band Just Jinger. The original song was also sampled by Nas.
His life became the subject of the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man, which premiered at the Sundance film festival to acclaim. It won the Oscar for best documentary in the following year.
Directed by Swedish film-maker Malik Bendjelloul, it charts his life and the search for him. After its success, Rodriguez’s albums entered the US charts for the first time.
“It’s been a great odyssey,” Rodriguez said in a 2008 interview with the Detroit News. “All those years, you know, I always considered myself a musician. But, reality happened.”
