So out of curiosity, wolf anyone be interested in like. A podcast about Tech theatre? Kind of like this post I made forever ago that blew up
Tumblr media
[IMAGE ID: tumblr user 5-to-places: You know what I want? I want a show in the Style of The Office, only it follows a production team at a theatre. Have like, an SM, some designers, front of house, an electrician, board ops, a Michael Scott-esque director who has all these big ideas, and actors that would cycle through every half season or at the end of the season. Idk just an idea. END IMAGE ID]
I'm kinda thinking of making it, but in an audio format, maybe framing it in the way of a Stage Manager who records production meetings, mixed in with phone calls and things like that.
This is what I'm thinking:
Tumblr media
[IMAGE ID: Discord user Kestrel (They/He): So what I'm thinking is a podcast that follows a Tech crew at a theatre company, and I want it to have sort of SF (Stellar Firma) vibes but it'll be scripted. It'd mostly focus on tech crew, but there will obviously be a director, a few actors, etc. And the director has sort of Michael Scott vibes in the way of big ideas and no realistic way to achieve them, And the actors of varying degrees of coolness ranging from 'neat actor who helps out sometimes and generally gets along with tech' to Actor™️ (trademark emoji).
In terms of Tech characters I for sure want a design team (Scenic, Costume, Lighting, and Sound), a Props Master bc of course, a Tech Director, and maybe some scenic carpenters, stitches, and electricians. And a Stage Manager. END IMAGE ID]
I'm not gonna say its definitely gonna be a thing, but I would love to do it if there's an interest in it, so like. Let me know in the replies/reblogs!

As far back as I can remember, I have loved to listen. Just be still and listen. The crickets out this morning chirp in songs making the world feel so alive, the fountain in my neighbors yard babbles actively adding its own tune to the song. The city is already awake, in the distance you can hear cars on the roads surrounding me. The city is so peaceful, with its own song.

Do you think for stage management it is beneficial to also be fairly competent at operating a sound and/or lighting desk?
YES YES!!!!!
You should know how to go forward and back in cues, jump to certain cues and correctly turn the board on and off.
These things can be life savers in a pinch.

All of these function are exceptionally simple on most machines so just ask if you don’t know how to do it.

In a continued effort to keep up with actual literal SM/techblr on the platform from whence we came... behold: paperwork!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a document I’ve had rattling around in my brain for a while but (to be completely honest) most of the musicals I work on move a bit too quickly for me to bother to get this detailed. Working on a Jr. script was the perfect way to actually put this together for the first time.
I’d say about 98% of the shows (I’m not a mathematician) I work on use tracks in both show and rehearsal. And even if we’re working with a live pit for the show, I don’t always have a rehearsal pianist. That’s where a document like this comes in handy. Yes things are notated in my script but, like with all good paperwork, this is meant to be handed off to someone for a quick reference if me or my script aren’t available. Dance captain needs to work on a number in the other room? Here ya go don’t waste time scrubbing through tracks.
Where this can get tricky is when major edits are done to tracks within Qlab (say we build a vamp into a song... or add several repeats that play straight through instead of playing out of a vamp... or splice a song into several pieces)... obviously that is not something I have run into with this particular document quite yet but I know it’s comin’.
I miss tumblr a lot, but full disclosure: I am becoming more and more active on Instagram... including with the stage management/theatre/production management-type work I’ve shifted into over the last few months so feel free to follow me there! @thankyoufive . Obv.

Tech People
People often talk about dream roles in theater, so I’m wondering what some peoples dream tech shows are and for what job? One of mine would be to do light design for Little Shop of Horrors
