HOW TO: Make Animated Neon Text

Hi! No one asked for this tutorial, but this is one of my favorite typography effects as of late — so I thought I'd share how I do it. You can see this effect in the first gif of this *NSYNC Celebrity set and the last gif of this Anthony Bridgerton set. Disclaimer: This tutorial assumes you have a basic understanding of gif-making in Photoshop. It's also exclusively in Timeline and uses keyframes for the fading effect seen on the blue text.

PHASE 1: PREP YOUR BASE GIF

1.1 – Choose a dark scene. This effect looks best contrasted against a dark background. You can definitely do it with a bright background, but just like a neon sign irl, you only turn it on in the dark/at night — so keep that in mind! 

1.2 – Determine the length of your clip. Depending on how much you want your text to flash or fade in, you'll want to make sure you have a scene long enough to also allow the text not to flash — reducing the strain it takes to actually read the text. For reference, my gif is 48 frames.

1.3 – Crop, color, etc. as you would. New to gif-making? Check out my basic tutorial here!

PHASE 2: FORMAT YOUR TEXT

Before we animate anything, get your text and any vectors laid out and formatted exactly as you want them!

2.1 – Finding neon sign fonts. It's easy as going to dafont.com and typing "neon" into the search bar!

2.2 – Fonts I used. Neon Glow by weknow | Neon by Fenotype | Neon Bines by Eknoji Studio

And to not leave my fellow font hoarders hanging, the font for "tutorial by usergif" is Karla (it's a Google font) 🥰

2.3 – Group your text layers. (Conditional) If you plan on having multiple text layers like I did and you want them to appear connected (like how the last letters of "NEON" and "sign" intersect with the wand icon), I suggest putting the layers into groups according to color (the shortcut to group layers is Command+G). If you don't group your text and just apply the outer glow settings to each individual layer, you'll end up with something like this:

—where you can see the glow overlap with the line, instead of the smooth connection you see in my final example gif. I'm using 2 colors for my text, so I made a group for red and a group for blue.

2.4 – Apply Outer Glow. Right-click your text layer (or your group if you have several layers) and select "Blending Options" to open the Layer Style menu. Check "Outer Glow" and feel free to play around with the settings until you like the way your text looks!

Your outer glow color should be darker and more vibrant than the color of the text itself. The text should be within the same color family but much brighter and, sometimes, almost white (see Step 2.2 again for my text colors).

Here are the settings for the Red Glow (the glow color is #FF3966) and Blue Glow (#00F0FF):

These aren't always my exact settings but they're pretty close to my standard. I always set the blend mode to Hard Light and usually have the opacity at 100%.

For every gif I use this effect on, I like to play around with Spread and Size. Spread will make the glow look denser and "expand the boundaries" (source: Adobe) and Size will diffuse the glow and blow it out so it covers a larger area (Adobe says it "Specifies the radius and size of blur").

2.5 – Duplicate your text layer/groups and remove glow. We're only going to be animating the glow on our text, and since doing this affects its opacity/visibility, we want to preserve the base text by creating a duplicate.

I just hit the Command+J shortcut to duplicate my groups and delete the Outer Glow effects, making sure that the "No Glow" version is above the "Glow" version:

I also put all these groups into one group called "Text" for organization and so I could apply a drop shadow to all the elements for better visibility.

PHASE 3: CREATE THE FLASHING EFFECT

This is for the effect you see on the RED text in my gif!

3.1 – The 0.03-Second Rule If you've read any of my animation tutorials before, you're probably already familiar with this rule. In my experience (and for reasons I can't explain), Video Timeline pauses every 0.03 seconds (try clicking the forward button a few times, you'll probably find a "duplicate" or paused frame). So, keep all your layers a duration of 0.03-second increments (e.g. 0.06 or 0.09 seconds can also work) and align them on the Timeline at 0.03-second intervals. If you don't follow this rule, you'll get duplicate frames when you export, resulting in a choppy final gif.

3.2 – Trim and arrange your text layers. Only on the layers/groups WITH the Outer Glow effect, trim them into several segments of varying lengths where the glow will be "on" (visible) and leaving spaces where the glow should be "off."

Typically, I'll have a mixture of 0.06 and 0.03-second text. That's when the glow will be visible. Between each "flash" of visibility, I've got a 0.03-second blank space, baby *pen clicks* and I'll write your name:

The layers shown above are arranged with a few flashes and two long segments of no flashing. This is the order and duration of each segment shown above (purple = visible segments):

0.06 blank, 0.06 visible, 0.03 blank, 0.03 visible, 0.03 blank, 0.03 visible, 0.03 blank, 0.24 visible (the long bit where "FLASHING" doesn't flash at all), 0.03 blank, 0.03 visible, 0.03 blank, 0.12 visible

(I only did this for the text that says "FLASHING" to give it a glitching effect. The other red text keeps the glow visible starting at the first long segment.)

PHASE 4: CREATE THE FADE-IN EFFECT

This is for the effect you see on the BLUE text in my gif!

4.1 – Animate using the Opacity Keyframe. Again, we're only touching the layers/groups WITH the glow effect. If you only have one layer of text, you'll find the Opacity Keyframe by clicking the film reel icon:

If you're working with groups like me, you'll find it in the Timeline panel under the group when it's expanded:

As you can see, I already added my keyframes (lil diamond babies). And luckily, it's super easy to do!

4.2 – Add the ending Keyframe first. We're starting at the end because our layers/groups are already at 100% opacity. Drag the playhead (the blue arrow attached to the red vertical line) to a spot where you want the glow to be 100% opaque — this is where the glow will be fully "on" or visible. [Again, follow the 0.03-Second Rule. You will get duplicate frames regardless when using keyframes (this will be explained in the note in Phase 5), but abiding to the rule will mitigate the amount of dupes you get.]

Then, click the clock icon by "Opacity" to place a keyframe:

4.3 – Add the starting Keyframe. Go backward from the ending Keyframe you just placed (I went back 0.12 seconds — but you can play around with the duration of the fade, just keep it a multiple of 0.03):

And drop another keyframe, this time by clicking the diamond icon by "Opacity":

4.4 – Reduce the opacity on the starting Keyframe. Keeping that keyframe you just placed selected, go to the layers panel and reduce your layer's/group's opacity to 0%:

Now, this Outer Glow will slowly fade from 0% to 100% opacity.

And just for a visual aid, here's where my fade-in keyframes are in relation to my flashing segments:

To refresh your mind, the 0% Opacity Keyframe starts when "FLASHING" is visible for 0.24 seconds (the first long segment of visibility).

With these keyframes, you'll get a smooth fade-in à la ✨light switch with a dimmer✨

PHASE 5: EXPORT

Yay, we're finished! Convert from Timeline back to Frames and export your gif!

NOTE: If you only did the flashing effect and followed my 0.03-Second Rule, you shouldn't have any duplicate gifs. BUT if you included the fade-in effect using keyframes, you WILL have duplicate frames. 'Tis the nature of keyframes. 🤷‍♀️ I had 4 extra frames where the fade-in starts, which I deleted. So, as always, I recommend checking your frames when you convert from Video Timeline back to Frame Animation — and manually delete any duplicate frames.

I’ve already gotten a lot of messages and ask telling me happy Mother’s Day from so many!

Maybe it’s me being super emotional because it’s Mother’s Day and holidays always make me emotional, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for even thinking to tell me happy Mother’s Day.

I went years before divulging I was a mom on Tumblr. When I became close with so many in the Jack Harlow fandom and Chris Evans fandom, our lives outside of tumblr started to intertwine with our lives on Tumblr.

The fact that I know that I have so many who genuinely love and care for my son warms this mom’s heart in way I can’t even explain!

Telling @harlowsbby and @babiefries and @hoodharlow let me know when they want to get him because he has driven me crazy for the day is not even done in a jokingly way!

Telling @nattinatalia that we should just move into one big house and make life easier for us because I know we would have a house full of love!

Knowing that I’d have forever babysitters in @neon-lights-and-glitter and @harlowcomehome is comforting.

@heavyhitterheaux knows me best out of anyone. She is more than just my nurse bestie. Coit genuinely loves hers and she can calm him and his anxiety with just one video telling him to have a great week. Our goal for 2023 is to finally meet so we can have the biggest hugs and biggest laughs while listening to Jack but throwing in our love for all things BSB/NSYNC. We have had some deep conversations and she has been a source of calm when I needed it most when dealing with a situation. We can easily have 3 different conversations going between post, messages, and DMs.

@labella420 you are my autism twin mama. The one who gets it when literally no one else will. The one who will understand more in few words than a 100 said to someone else. You genuinely love and care not just about Coit, but me as well. You are the one I can tell the hardships to with zero judgement. You are the one that gets how HARD this is every damn day! At the end of the day, you just get it.

It turns out that *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake has touring plans of his own for 2024. Billboard has confirmed that Timberlake has holds on dates at arenas in North America for a major run, with sources saying the trek will be accompanied by a new album from the singer. As they say in the business, Timberlake is going back into cycle, which means there won’t be any full-fledged *NSYNC tour any time soon.

Album Review of the Week: Lali - Lali (2023) ☆☆☆☆

Funnily enough, I found out about this album from the Britney sample in its single "Obsesión". It was reposted on several Britney fan Instagram accounts and as a fan of Britney and Spanish music, I ran to play the entire album.

Argentinian singer Lali teamed up with a couple of producers and set out to create an Argentinian pop album, which they had felt never been done before. The style is inspired by Max Martin and his hard-hitting early 2000s pop music (Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Britney, etc). The album cover is even inspired by Avril Lavigne's Let Go. They definitely achieved what they had set out to do because this album is fantastic!

The entire album has a high energy that does not falter, even during the downtempo tracks. The beat keeps pulsating throughout, and it is full of innovations while throwing it back to the music of yesteryear.

Obsesión has a really cool guitar intro, the hard-hitting beats and a twirling instrumental laid on top - not to mention that awesome Britney sample taken from (You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop! Remix).

Quiénes Son? is one of my favorite tracks, I love the creepy crawly vocal melody. I'm not really sure if it's technically a chorus, but there is a quick vocal bit that does repeat however with different lyrics. That is really fun as well! The title translates to "Who Are They?" and is an ode against online hate culture.

Diva is a downtempo R&B track that discusses the pitfalls of becoming someone defined by the term "diva" to the public and names some other famous divas such as Britney and Cher. This a great track and I definitely clocked the early 2000s-like single beat right at the end of the track, sort of like the end of Baby One More Time.

Motiveishon is another standout track. It is a mainstay on any workout playlist of mine as it not only discusses motivation, but also has the driving beat to back it up and keep you moving! Normally, I really dislike male vocalists and rappers with my divas but I feel like the person featured in this track definitely adds some edge!

Unfortunately, I have yet to procure a copy of this disc. The original images are sourced from Discogs.

Jasper knows most all of the halftime shows, and it's a tie between Lady Gaga and Madonna for him, which somehow surprised some people thinking he'd say Katy Perry). So I was thinking *NSYNC and Aerosmith, but then I remembered, and the answer is obvious. Ray's favorite halftime is Janet Jackson, and it's not just for the controversial part, surprisingly. But it does help it be the favorite. It definitely helps.

(Note: listen if you have no clue what I'm talking about, that's fair. The performer had a wardrobe malfunction and the nfl basically tore down her career after. Look it up.)

Deep dive #2: Jessica Biel’s relationships timeline and all the interconnections

Disclaimer: This is done for fun. No hate, no drama, just some Hollyweirdness. It’s not a detailed timeline but more like key moments with some fun or surprising connections and anecdotes (to me at least). It’s just not possible to do one boyfriend timeline without mentionning another one. No famous people won’t be mentionned, neither most tabloids speculations. People already twist things, so it can’t be worse (right?). And please don’t judge my english.

Spring 1997: During the interview with All-Stars Magazine, 15 years old JessicaBiel shared that she only had two "sort of" boyfriends, both of whom were 17.

All-stars: In real life, do you ever date older guys? Jessica: I don’t really date very many people. I’ve had two boyfriends kind of! Both of them have been 17, so they’re usually older.

Spring 1998: 16 years old Jessica Biel is filming her second movie “I’ll be Home for Christmas” with Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Alberta and Vancouver, Canada. She met Adam LaVorgna who play the bad boy Eddie, they start dating while filming the movie. Even thought Adam is not very well known, he has been acting since he is 10. Nsync’s christmas song was used during the end credit of the movie. FYI The movie is available on Disney+.

Fall 1999: 7th Heaven producers were looking for an actor to play Jessica’s character Mary Camden boyfriend and asked her if she had any suggestion. She suggested her then boyfriend Adam. His first appearance as Robbie Palmer in 7th Heaven was in season 4, Episode 10 aired on November 29, 1999. When the producers first called his team, they refused it without talking to Adam. He had to call them to tell them to accept it. He didn’t care for the show but just wanted to be with Jessica and make easy money. Adam shared that story on the Worst Ever Podcast in 2019.

January 2000: Lance Bass from Nsync guest-starred in 7th Heaven as Rick Palmer (Adam LaVorgna character’s brother). He appeared in season 4 episode 13 that aired on January 30, 2000.

I have a friend who worked for a publicist for some of the actors on The WB, such as [”7th Heaven” star] Beverley Mitchell and the people from ”Popular.” So I was having dinner with her and Beverley, and Beverley was talking about how she wanted a boyfriend this season, and I said, ”I’ll do it!” and she was like, ”Okay!” Source: Entertainment Weekly, January 2000

So of course while filming that episode Jessica was asked by Enews about Nsync. She said she knew about them but don’t own any of their CDs and they shared their differents experiences.

March 2000: Jessica did the scandalous Gear Magazine photoshoot. (She quickly regretted doing that photoshoot and shared how horrible the experience was). Adam was not happy about it. There were some tensions between them while she was spending time with the interviewer.

During the time I spent with her, the Boyfriend (whom she asks not to name) is constant presence, though he’s more than 3,000 miles away in Boston. What he thinks  and how he’ll react take up a large portion of Jesse’s thoughts. He’s nervous at her being perceived as sex idol, and having a writer from men’s magazine spend several days with her is not helping. Over the course of those days, the phone keeps ringing - the Boyfriend - and it’s stressing her. [...] Jesse and I are supposed to hook up the first night I'm in L.A., and I wait for the phone to ring at my hotel room. It never does. [...] The next morning, we talk on the phone. It turns out Jesse had a big fight with the Boyfriend on the phone, and, no longer able to deal, she went to her friend's house and spent the night. Summer 2000: When it was time for Jessica to leave the show to attend college on the East Coast with Adam (Jessica at Tufts University and Adam at Boston College), the producers of 7th Heaven contacted Adam and offered him a regular role for Season 5. Adam agreed, dropped out of college to be in Los Angeles for filming, while Jessica, who needed a break, still went to college in Massachusetts.

With hindsight, Adam regretted accepting the offer because now he feels like the producers asked him to comeback for season 5 to hit back at Jessica for leaving the show. Jessica was still working on the show during her school break, only appeared in few episodes and her scenes were very brief. Contrary to what was said in the medias, Jessica was never fired from the show. Aaron Spelling made it clear she still had 2 years left in her contract. They destroyed her character thought.

October 5, 2001: The Enquirer is reporting that Adam LaVorgna went to Promises rehab in Malibu for cocaine and Vicodin addiction.

The Enquirer is reporting that Jessica Biel's boyfriend and 7th Heaven co-star [Adam LaVorgna] checked himself into Promises rehab in Malibu after Jessica and the show's producers both gave the cocaine and Vicodin addict  an ultimatum. An insider told the taboid, "The cocaine and pills drastically  changed his demeanor." After the two talked him into rehab, he appears greatful as the friend added, "Right now he's thanking God for Jessica and the show's  producers. They saved his livelihood - and his life." Adam revealed in the Worst Ever Podcast in 2019, he started drinking at 10/11yo and had Opioid addiction (and then maybe doing heroin, I didn’t understand exactly what he said). He went to rehab multiple times and the first two times were paid by 7th Heaven producer, Aaron Spelling.

In the interviews with Elle Magazine and Cosmopolitan in 2005, Jessica mentioned, without explicitly stating his name, that the relationship was not healthy. Also mentionned in the London (2005) movie behind the scene.

October 10, 2001: Jessica Biel and Chris Evans did their first red carpet appearance at the wrap party of her movie “The Rules of Attraction”. Unless I'm wrong, Chris’ first red carpet of his career were also with Jessica. There is no information about how they met. In the interview with Animal Fair on January 2003, it is mentionned they were friends before dating. In Chris' workout video for Not Another Teen Movie, you can see Jessica in January 2002 commenting on the evolution of his body after filming the movie. They were not dating yet when he did the movie.

Jessica was back full time to L.A after one year at Tufts University. She did another semester later in 2002.

Jessica is still under her 7th Heaven contract and is working daily with Adam LaVorgna on season 6. 7th Heaven showrunner who was still holding grudge against her, made Mary desperate to win Robbie back while he keep rejecting her.

Before writing this post, I didn’t realize that it seems like Jessica and Adam never lived in the same state until they broke up.

Somehow Adam and Chris built a strong friendship for over 20 years. Adam was Chris plus-one at the 2016 Golden Globes. 💁‍♀️

November 11, 2002: The last 7th Heaven episode starring Adam aired, season 7 episode 8. There were no official explanation of why Adam left, neither off screen nor on screen at that time. Adam later revealed in a interview with belief.net that the Hollywood life (easy money, barely working, drugs, partying) is not for him, he is unable to control him and left California for the East Coast. Neither Jessica, nor the cast ever mentionned his addiction.

Jessica’s initial contract being over after season 6, only apperared in 5 out of 22 episodes of season 7. They had only 2 episodes in common.

Beverley Mitchell used to hang out a lot with the Nsync guys in the early 2000s. She participated at many of their Challenge For The Children charity events in Miami from 2000 to 2005. David Gallagher also took part of it. Beverley became pretty close to the guys. Joey Fatone also attended her wedding in Italy in 2008, and she was often seen with Lance Bass. Beverley shared during a recent podcast  with Lance Bass (@ 56min)  that she asked Jessica multiple times to come to thoses events and that she is unlike them actually good at basketball but she always refused.

During a podcast with Tia Mowry, Beverley revealed that Jessica used to tease her for hanging out with Nsync. Tia also shared a story about a Teen People party she was with Jessica where Nsync were performing. Beverley also mentionned that strange moment Justin’s mom asked her about Jessica at the 2007 Golden Globes.

October 2003: Jessica Biel and Chris Evans filmed the movie “Cellular” in Santa Monica, Callifornia. The director of the movie, David R. Ellis, asked Chris to ask Jessica to play the small girlfriend role. He also revealed they had broken up after filming the movie but were back together during the press tour for the movie.

It doesn’t seem to be someone from the industry, there were no other celebrity. Jessica explained on the Late show of Jay Leno that paparazzi followed her from her Brentwood house and she had to negociate with them. She posed for them in exchange of them leaving and stop bothering the wedding.

June 2008:  Intouch reports that Jessica Biel is moving with Justin Timberlake in his Hollywood Hills house but she will still keep her Brentwood house. She was rarely seen around Brentwood after this.

July 11, 2008: Eonline reports that Jessica, Justin and Chris were all at the opening of the nightclub Kress in Los Angeles but didn’t interact.

He got the information from their ski instructor friend (not posting his tweet because he is not a public person). Justin and Jessica are known to do heli-snowboarding which would explain why they had an instructor with them. They didn’t confirmed or denied at the moment.

3. what’s your favorite candle scent?

Oooh I’m not the biggest candle person, but I do love apple-cinnamon and citrus-y scents. I’m very food motivated, lol, and floral scents tend to bother me after a certain amount of time.

6. say three nice things about yourself (three physical and three non-physical). Ayyy, cee asked me this one which I answered over here. But I can do three more:

1) I make excellent grilled cheese! And pancakes! 🥞 2) I try my best to make/create or find thoughtful gifts for my friends. Although these days most of my gifts are cute little paintings or spider plant babies. But I like finding notebooks or trinkets that make me think of my friend or our friendship. 3) I like how proud I am of my fan vids. Here are three quick self-recs/blasts from my past:

Blue (multi-source) - 2012 - I practically downloaded the whole internet to make this one.

Bright Star (Jupiter Ascending) - 2015 - the joy of using this 1999 britney/nsync mashup to this film...transcendent.

Ribcage (Ex Machina) - 2016 - to have a song that i can go so fucking hard with... K-Flay and Angel Haze's voices = amazing. It was pure catharsis to make this and have i come out so quietly and rage-fully perfect.

Oh, this darn cat, Dublin, that has bonded to me over the years. She’s very dopey and sweet. Like an overgrown raccoon, really, but I love her so much. Except when she sneezes on me. She definitely one of the top things that reminds me of home now.

I completely agree that Big Hit have made all recent decisions pertaining solely to make as much coin from BTS as possible. They've even admitted publicly that having majority of their income come from BTS when they have an expiry date is a poor business model and they are attempting to diversify because of it.

My issue with it is... as an old fan of BTS who's first MV was Fire and comeback was BST/ Wings Era... I have seen them build their fan base and brand on a promise of authentic engagement with fans. Their whole buzz was that in a highly commercialized kpop world, they were not chained and restrained nor was their focus on money, but on uplifting people through their music. They were given more voice and choice than any other kpop group of their time. I feel like with the amount of massive commercial success they've had that authenticity eroded from them. Maybe it was just a marketing strategy which has shifted... but I bought into it and I miss it which makes these decisions a little harder for me to swallow.

I don't mean to be *that* fan... but I really miss the old comeback days when things seemed (although still manufactured) less commercially geared towards the sole purpose of taking money? I miss the individual comeback intros. I miss the complicated theories that each MV held. I miss the clear distinction between eras that had decisive goodbyes. I miss that... genuine buzz and engagement that we as a Fandom got freaking out over the significance of something as simple as Hoseok eating a snickers.

The simple reality is they don't need to actually put that much effort into their music to sell it anymore... they don't need elaborate MVs and long term era themes/ plots, linked stage themes and cohesive links between new albums. Heck... if anything this announcement proves they don't even need new albums anymore full stop and people still will buy them.

I don't blame Big Hit or BTS. I'm old enough to understand the decisions from a business point of view. Why put in that amount of effort when it isn't needed? I still think their new songs are a bop. I enjoy their collaborations and think it's fun. I'm not bitter about the decisions they're making nor am I going to be a hater or anything.

But... I just really really miss the way things were from a consumption point of view. The engagement just doesn't feel the same for me.

I got into them right before Run era started and I remember all of what you're saying from the old days. I lost a lot of sleep because fan engagement was a blast back then, especially during BST which was one of my top fave eras. I'm always going to miss that time and remember it fondly because I had some many great interactions on this blog about all kinds of random shit going on with the members. No one talks to me about their faves here anymore; it's just recirculating gifs now. That's why most of my fan engagement has been in Discord and Twitter the last few years.

The shift in marketing definitely seems like "work smarter, not harder" and I get it. Through BTS' success, HYBE has acquired other companies and groups in an attempt to diversify with varying opinions on it. While I've vehemently disagreed with most of their acquisitions and business ventures like getting Source & Pledis, working with McDonalds during a nationwide strike, and NFTs, I have continued to listen to the music I enjoy.

Being disappointed that a group isn't going in the direction you hoped after years of enjoying their music doesn't make you a hater. I think that label gets thrown around a lot by fans who haven't had their views challenged before. I honestly feel relieved to read any critiques at this point, whether I agree with it or not, when it comes to a group and their company. Those are the kinds of conversations I like having with other fans, especially older pop fans who remember the BSB vs. NSYNC & Britney vs. Christina fanwars like I do.

If you're open to branching out (no pressure), I can say with confidence there are multiple 3rd and 4th groups who have an active voice in not only songwriting, but production, arrangement, choreography, and concept. I'm a huge fan of several of them now. Not all groups fit the bill, but several do that thematic open and close with concepts and eras like what you're describing. My favorite thing about k-pop is how songs, outfits, landscapes, and choreo are used to communicate larger themes to an audience who many or may not share the language--just like theater.
