Hi everyone,
I found this interesting article about screen time and its connection to Autism and ADHD. Here’s an excerpt:
A recent study from Drexel University reveals alarming new insights into the effects of screen time on toddlers.
The research suggests that babies and toddlers exposed to television or video viewing may exhibit atypical sensory behaviors and have difficulty processing the world around them.
Atypical sensory behaviors include being disengaged, seeking more intense stimulation, or being overwhelmed by sensory inputs such as loud sounds or bright lights.
The full article will be below in case any one else wants to read it.

Herb of the Week; Coffee
Tumblr media
While herbal tea is my first love and usually my go to hot beverage. However most mornings require at least one cup of coffee. Cold winter days such as today I often find that number increased. It’s as if the powers that be know I need coffee’s magick just a bit more on those days. So without further ado here is this week’s herb of the week blog.
It should come as no surprise that this bold flavored her is masculine. What may surprise you however is that coffee is associated with not one but 3 elements. Those would be Fire, Earth and Air. Coffee is ruled by the planet Mars. It’s powers include Peace, Grounding, Divination, Curse Breaking and Persuasion.
Tumblr media
Some Magickal uses are as follows:
Makes a great offering for deities, ancestors and entities.
Serve coffee to someone you are needing to bring over to your way of seeing things.
Brew coffee without straining grounds. Ask a question you wish answered. Once you have drank the beverage you can read the grounds just as you would tea leaves.
Use coffee to break curses.
Banish ghost from your home by washing floors with strong brewed coffee.
Tumblr media
I hope you have enjoyed this week’s herbal blog of the week. Perhaps it will encourage you to do further research on the magickal properties of coffee and put it to use in your everyday witchcraft. For its powers extended beyond its ability to awaken us. As always comments and questions are welcomed.
Brightest Blessings,
The Violet Moon Witchery

Experts screen for allergies using nasal smears
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Tumblr media
earth.com
Researchers at the Technical University of Munich have developed a new way to screen for allergies using a simple nasal smear. The technique relies on biochip technology to measure antibodies that play a role in specific allergic responses.
Screening for environmental allergies usually involves a skin prick test that is used to determine which allergens cause a reaction. The test is very unpleasant for some patients, especially small children, earth.com reported.
In Europe alone, 130 million people suffer from hay fever or allergic rhinitis, with symptoms like itchy, watery eyes and sneezing.
The research team has demonstrated that a gentle nasal swab combined with biochip technology may ultimately prove to be the simplest method of screening for environmental allergies.
Using a molecular diagnostics technology that was originally developed for analyzing blood, the researchers screened nasal secretions as well as blood samples for concentrations of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. These proteins trigger different allergic responses.
The study was focused on individuals with and without sensitivity to the most common airborne allergens, including grass pollen, dust mites, and tree pollen.
The study revealed that the blood and nasal smears detected identical allergic sensitization patterns for all of the airborne allergens investigated.
A link between the detection of allergy antibodies in the blood and in nasal secretions has already been demonstrated in previous studies. The current research confirms this link, and shows that both methods can detect a wide range of aeroallergens.
Study lead author Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann is a professor of Environmental Medicine and the director of the Institute of Environmental Medicine at the Helmholtz Zentrum München.
“A big advantage of allergy diagnostics with a nasal smear is that it is a good option for small children as compared to blood samples or skin prick testing. For that age group, a hypo-sensitization therapy is important because allergic rhinitis can develop into allergic asthma,” said Traidl-Hoffmann.
“We also believe that, with nasal smears, IgE antibodies specific to certain allergies can be detected that cannot be measured in a blood sample. We now need to do further studies to explore that hypothesis,” added study coauthor Dr. Stefanie Gilles.

I collect Google Earth images. I discovered strange moments where the illusion of a seamless representation of the Earth’s surface seems to break down. At first, I thought they were glitches, or errors in the algorithm, but looking closer I realized the situation was actually more interesting — these images are not glitches. They are the absolute logical result of the system. They are an edge condition—an anomaly within the system, a nonstandard, an outlier, even, but not an error. These jarring moments expose how Google Earth works, focusing our attention on the software. They reveal a new model of representation: not through indexical photographs but through automated data collection from a myriad of different sources constantly updated and endlessly combined to create a seamless illusion; Google Earth is a database disguised as a photographic representation. These uncanny images focus our attention on that process itself, and the network of algorithms, computers, storage systems, automated cameras, maps, pilots, engineers, photographers, surveyors and map-makers that generate them.

Workshop week 3_ Scraping, Hunting and Performing
Today Andy introduced us to a technique that we could use for our final project and may assist in capturing the post digital experience. Firstly, he informed us of work from artist Ed Ruscha who used the tool of scraping to create books that collated imagery based on a idea. Other examples used the scraping technique by searching to collage imagery based on a word or an idea. The technique has a beautiful simplicity and offers a final result that feels somewhat “complete”. Although the images may not have meant to be together, they live in a new context with the ability to tell a new interesting story.
To inform the hunting technique we were shown work from Jon Rafmon’s series “9-Eyes” which used google street view to find photographic compositions. Thinking of Google’s tools as a non-human camera that captures scenes just waiting to be composed. His works consists of vigorous searching to find mysterious compositions of the real world. Clement Valla’s Postcards from Google Earth is another example of the hunting technique, collating images where Google’s 3D rending software has not captured the environment as it actually is. Interesting when Clement talks about his work he does not categorize the works as mistakes, rather he talks about how they are an anomaly part of a logical system.
The performing technique has similarities to the hunting technique and is arguably more conceptual. It quite literally can use tools to perform part of the content. An example of this technique is “American Psycho”, a work by Mimi Cabell, which was created by sending the novel of the same name “American Pyscho” through several gmail messages. Google then promoted a set of adds related to the shared emails, which were then collected and published with the novels chapter titles and the relating adds.
The book pictured above is a work I created using the hunting technique, hunting for potential waves on a remote island called North Sentinel. Capturing all the waves that I found find on the island to create almost a surf guide. I have spent so many hours scraping (hunting) through Google Earth, looking at surf all around the world and was introduced to the island not that long ago. I found it so strange that the island had such perfect waves and these waves were most likely going un-ridden. The performance of this book struggled due to its size and the scale of the photographs in the book once printed. While putting the images together, I wanted the screenshots to sing and isolate the beauty within the scenes. However, I think that it’s difficult to see the landscape properly and the layout turned out looking vanilla and not particularly dynamic. If I was to play with this idea again, I think I would create the open spread to be the exact size of a computer screen. It would be an interesting juxtaposition and a subtle way of exploring the screen as a modern day book. The user would turn the pages to reveal static images of Google Earth, a platform which usually offers maximum flexibility. I do enjoy the idea of using the book as a medium that almost should not contain a certain type of content. Experiences that need to be experienced online and are impossible to understand in print setting. Post digital technology has provided the tools to hunt down waves while sitting in the comfort of your home and possibly having the chance to surf a wave for the first time. With previous restrictions of landscape and weather not being an issue, the search can always continue.

Some of Sailor Uranus’ birthstones: Amber (Personal favourite), Top Right; Jasper, Lower Right (Talismanic Zodiac birthstone for Aquarius)
SAILOR MOON GEMSTONES & MINERALS: SAILOR URANUS
By ~ Mamoru Chiba
NAOKO-SENSEI’S TRAINING IN MINERALS & GEMSTONES: The reason we do this feature is because Naoko Takeuchi named most of her villain characters after a gemstone or mineral and associated each of the Senshi with a gemstone or mineral. Takeuchi-sensei was born in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, the historically famous city of artisan gems carving and distributing in Japan, and belonged to an earth sciences club in high school.  To this day, the Yamanashi Gem Museum displays gems, precious stones, and large quartz crystals collected from Japan and around the world.
Later, she studied chemistry in university in preparation to become a pharmacist and clinical research technician led to a by-the-book “mineral knowledge” being persistent throughout her work, and she got to know all the lore behind a large variety of minerals and gemstones.  See, she had promised her Dad, if this manga drawing idea didn’t work out, she could always fall back on working in a drug store! ☺  And as you will see, the mineral/gemstone knowledge did NOT go to waste, when that Sailor Moon manga thing worked out in a big way!

AQUARIUS: Haruka Ten’ou was born January 27th, 1979, under the sign of Aquarius the Water Bearer. A person born on January 27 is intelligent, a person of impeccable taste and fashion sense, craves adventure and excitement, is extremely ambitious and will never be satisfied until she reaches the top. Hence, Haruka becomes a top race car driver when she is legally too young to even drive in Japan (so she got her driver’s licence abroad) and becomes a talented pianist as well.
This Aquarius person tends to be impatient and bad tempered. They can also be suspicious and very stubborn.  Well, we saw how suspicious and bad tempered she got at just a hint that Seiya was flirting with Michiru! Apparently, her patience and temper will be taxed by some irksome work later in life. I hope this isn’t talking about her time cooling her heels at home being Haruka-Papa to baby Hotaru!

TRADITIONAL JANUARY BIRTHSTONE & ZODIAC BIRTHSTONE FOR AQUARIUS: GARNET
GARNET - Because she is a January baby like Sailor Saturn, Haruka shares the January birthstones of Garnet and Emerald (January birthstone in Tibetan Calendar)
January Birthstone Poem – The Garnet:
"By her who is this month was born No gem save garnets shall be worn They will ensure her constancy True friendship and fidelity."
http://www.birthdaygems.org/january-birthstone.htm
RE: Constancy & Fidelity: The flirtatious Haruka NEEDS to wear a garnet to keep her from impulsive attractions to other girls. Michiru should give Haruka a large garnet necklace and a ring as a gift, methinks!
Garnet also helps to remove inhibitions and taboos and brings courage and self confidence.  Sailor Uranus might be regarded as the boldest and least inhibited of the Senshi, so that fits.
EMERALD - Emerald is the Mystical birthstone for January in the old Tibetan calendar. It is known as the stone of successful love, bringing loyalty and domestic bliss. A good gemstone to enhance Haruka and Michiru’s strong relationship!
As an Aquarius, Sailor Uranus also has Amethyst, Opal, Turquoise and Jasper as horoscope gemstones.
PLANETARY BIRTHSTONE OF AQUARIUS: TURQUOISE
TURQUOISE: The planetary gemstone of Uranus and Aquarius. If you receive a gold ring with a turquoise in it as a gift, it is said to protect you from falls and bruises. What a great gift for Michiru to get Haruka, given the rough and tumble life they lead together! Turquoises help you speak with the energy of truth, wisdom and forthrightness. Honestly, I can’t remember an occasion where Haruka was ever less than *in your face* forthright when she has spoken! ;-D The stone also may be useful to harmonize the male and female aspects of your personality. Given Haruka’s genderfluid personality, I’m sure you’ll agree this aspect of turquoise would be useful to her!
TALISMANIC BIRTHSTONE OF AQUARIUS: JASPER
JASPER: The Talismanic birthstone of Aquarius. Wearing a Talismanic birthstone is supposed to give you more power and make the protective energies of the gemstone stronger by using the Talismanic gemstone associated with your Zodiac sign. Jasper is an elemental Earth stone, its beauty in its many colours and forms resembling  Nature itself - golden sunshine, a night time sky, poppy fields or a deep green forest, desert sands, the undulating ocean, red rock canyons, sweeping mountains.
Black Jasper or Basanite is highly shielding in situations of threats, curses and high risk occupations. I would say Sailor Uranus’ occupation qualifies as high risk! Also with her love of racing cars and driving very fast, Haruka should wear Black Jasper whenever out on the road.
Jaspers are the nurturers, the healers and the spirit stones of courage and wisdom.  The stone brings you determination and helps you see things through to the end. Undoubtedly Jasper would help Sailor Uranus have the persistence to see through her mission with Sailor Neptune to the end. Michiru, are you reading this? Jasper prolongs sexual pleasure! (Cue Haruka furiously blushing)
http://gemstone-dictionary.com/birthstones-by-month.php http://www.energymuse.com/blog/jasper-healing-properties/ http://www.healingwithcrystals.net.au/jasper.html
AMETHYST, OPAL, AGATE, AMBER:
AMETHYST - Amethyst is the birthstone for Aquarius in Hindu astrology, and is most well known for avoiding addictions or drunkenness. A risk taking individual like Haruka can certainly use the protection of Amethyst if she feels like indulging herself.
OPAL  - Opal is blonde Minako’s birthstone.  Since Opal is supposed to enhance blonde hair, fittingly, it is one of Haruka’s Zodiac gemstones as well.
AGATE - Agate is a horoscope stone both for Capricorn (Hotaru) and Aquarius (Haruka).  Agate soothes and calms, healing inner anger or tension and creates a sense of security and safety. Given Haruka’s volatile temper, this is an excellent stone for her.  Haruka’s personal favourite gemstone is Amber.
Haruka shares her birthday with the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the writer of Alice In Wonderland, Lewis Carroll. Both of these, like our Sailor Uranus, had a sarcastic sense of humour and dislike of authority.
AMBER -  Haruka’s personal favourite gemstone, though it’s not really a stone, but the fossilized resin of ancient evergreen trees.  Until I started buying amber jewellery, I wasn’t aware of the variety of forms this pine resin fossil comes in, from the conventional honey gold shade to cherry brandy, to cream, and even green with air bubbles. Many pieces of amber also have fossilized insects which were trapped in the resin 50 million years ago.
Amber, the Jurassic Sunshine Stone, brings the wearer inner peace, a sunny disposition and helps attract love as well as enhances fertility, a Happy Stone that helps with depression. Also known as the Memory Stone, it’s not only good for remembering things but medicinally, was used for thousands of years to alleviate headaches, heartaches, and pains of all kinds.
http://gemstone-dictionary.com/amber.php
http://www.old-earth.com/meaning-amber.html
http://www.jewellery-art.co.uk/amber-gemstone-meanings.html
As you can see, Sailor Uranus is associated with some very colourful, complex gemstones. Kind of like the colourful, complex lady herself!
