Looked like shit for our #FaceTheMusicNYC morning coach meeting. No makeup, ALL redness, and hair sticking up like an 8th grade boy 😩🌵 I felt extremely self-conscious (/ashamed), then reminded myself I‘m not only one sleeping worse these days. Also, f🤭ck it. Makeup is optional! (Kinda. ⬇️) I largely felt ashamed about not looking pretty because of what happens when I’m NOT pretty. More often than I like to publicly mention, I’m interrupted, talked over, or talked down to when I’m not visually commanding attention (i.e. wearing #sparklesfordays ✨🤩). Even on the sidewalk, people give me less space, expecting me to move out of their way or cutting right in front of me if I haven’t Painted A Face and donned a classy, bright AF outfit. 👗💥 (Looking classy REALLY factors in when I’m performing overseas or out of town, but it still noticeably influences foot traffic NYC. Looking at you, UES. 👀) On this note, Face the Music at @kaufmanmusiccenter is one of the sparkling exceptions to my experience as a Performer in The Industry and, more broadly, as a female Asian-American walking from point A 💃🏻➡️ point B. At FTM, we’re not interested in simply continuing songwriting lessons and music coachings online (though we ARE doing that through the next few months 😉): we’re committed to creating an environment ripe for raucous, creative excellence. That can only happen if everyone feels heard, seen, supported, and nurtured. We work at this every single week. Anyway, THIS photo 😛 After self-bashing for a 1/2 hour after we wrapped (because shame is one of those lingering things), I ate food (game-changer!), chugged some coffee, took a shower, DID a face 🎨👩🏻‍🎨 and voilà! Ready to go on camera again without feeling like 💩. Sigh 😕 I’m working on it. I sometimes feel conflicted about the message I’m sending. Nonverbally, I’m reinforcing the absolutely ridiculous expectations I’d prefer we all leave in a pre-pandemic world. On the other hand, I know my kids will feed off my energy during our sessions. It’ll help our momentum if I feel radiant, confident, and - well - Nice To Look At. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Folks, what are your thoughts here?
