It is critical that victims know they have significant rights, and victims know there are organizations like the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network to believe, support, and represent them. TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT

The 2nd Circuit Solicitor’s Office of South Carolina let a serial rapist walk free this year without even a slap on the wrist. Their reasoning? The victim is no longer alive to testify that it was non-consensual. I am sick to my stomach thinking that this predator is still walking free in South Carolina and there aren’t even roadblocks in his place to warn people of what he’s done. I wish I could be in Columbia to attend this rally and show support for her family and every other victim that this system has left behind. She was 1 of 3 victims that stepped forward against him, yet he only received 5 years probation for a lesser charge in one case. There are so many people who don’t say anything and this is EXACTLY why.

Join the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network (SCVAN), the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA) , community partners, and assault survivors and their families and friends this Thursday, May 12 at 9am to rally at the South Carolina State House. We need to raise awareness about the barriers faced by sexual assault victims and start holding the judicial system accountable to the people it is supposed to protect!
