#thisismysaintgallen #spaziergang #spazierweg #steinach #tippderwoche (hier: Saint Gallen) https://www.instagram.com/p/CorIYF7Ka-Y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Do you have any recs for books on the heresies of the Late Roman Empire? For some reason I am endlessly fascinated with (early) Christian heresies.
Cameron (Cambridge) and Mitchell (Blackwell) are good one-volume introductions to the late Roman Empire, but if you want stuff specifically about heresy, I'd recommend:
Maijastina Kahlos, Religious Dissent in Late Antiquity.
Baker ed. Schism, Heresy and Religious Protest.
Lewis Ayres, Nicaea and Its Legacy.
Iricinschi and Zellentin, ed. Heresy and Identity in Late Antiquity.
Berndt and Steinacher ed. Arianism.

The world's first transgender clinic
The myth of the Hirschfeld clinic in 1920s Berlin
How deluded is the TQ+ lobby? Its official history is certainly baloney. I came across an article in The Scientific American churning out -yet again- the myth of the Hirschfeld clinic in 1920s Berlin.
Yet Hirschfeld was a quack eugenicist whose staff promoted colonial conquest.
To their credit they do note and reference to Erwin Gohrbandt who conducted the first sex change surgery at Hirschfeld's behest. He'd go on to use his castration skills for the Nazis when he led the sterilization of the disabled.
He'd also collaborate with infamous experiments at Dachau. While Gohrbandt hadn't yet joined the Nazi Party when he did sex change surgery, his later championing of castration for racial hygiene means it's fair to question his motivations (along with Hirschfeld's).
If you do any amount of research, other than the cursory literary blowjob that trans activist publications praising Hirschfeld’s clinic and methods. Hirschfeld also championed the work of pseudo-scientist Eugen Steinach who -among other garbage - said he could cure homosexuality by implanting tissue from the testicles of straight men.
I found this at a website dedicated to the clinic's history and found Hirschfeld referred gay men for castration and testicle implants to cure their homosexuality. The uncomfortable truth is Hirschfeld promoted gay Conversion Therapy. Just like gender clinics do now.
Tumblr media
Hirschfeld's lasting legacy was a theory based on rigid gender stereotypes that effeminate men were biologically closer to female and butch lesbians closer to males biologically. He even conducted research to find sperm in "lesbian secretions". https://washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/l
His theories would be carried to America by Harry Benjamin who'd go on to found the predecessor of
@WPATH
. It's no coincidence Benjamin became one of the most ardent promoters of Steinach's pseudo-science before he switched to promoting sex change surgery in the 60s.
There's a straight path from the disastrous sex change surgery experiments Hirschfeld pioneered to today's big pharma industry that mutilates young troubled people. Hirschfeld was a rebel but that doesn't mean he wasn't profoundly wrong. His legacy continues to be toxic.

Today we also celebrate our Venerable Father Gall, Enlightener of Switzerland. Saint Gall according to hagiographic tradition was a disciple and one of the traditional twelve companions of Columbanus on his mission from Ireland to the continent. According to his 9th-century biographers in Reichenau, Saint Gall was from Ireland and entered Europe as a companion of Columbanus. As a young man, he went to study under Comgall of Bangor Abbey. The monastery at Bangor had become renowned throughout Europe as a great centre of Christian learning. Studying in Bangor at the same time as Gall was Columbanus, who with twelve companions, set out about the year 589. Gall and his companions established themselves with Columbanus at first at Luxeuil in Gaul. In 610, Columbanus was exiled by leaders opposed to Christianity and fled with Gall to Alemannia. He accompanied Columbanus on his voyage up the Rhine River to Bregenz but when in 612 Columbanus travelled on to Italy from Bregenz, Gall had to remain behind due to illness and was nursed at Arbon. He remained in Alemannia, where, with several companions, he led the life of a hermit in the forests southwest of Lake Constance, near the source of the river Steinach. Cells were soon added for twelve monks whom Gall carefully instructed. Gall was soon known in Switzerland as a powerful preacher. When the See of Constance became vacant, the clergy who assembled to elect a new bishop were unanimously in favour of Gall. He, however, refused, pleading that the election of a stranger would be contrary to church law. Some time later, in the year 625, on the death of Eustasius, abbott of Luxeuil, a monastery founded by Columbanus, members of that community were sent by the monks to request Gall to undertake the government of the monastery. He refused to quit his life of solitude, and undertake any office of rank which might involve him in the cares of the world. He was then an old man. He died at the age of ninety-five around 646–650 in Arbon. May he intercede for us always + Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Gall (at Arbon, Switzerland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjvtLebD_l1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sophie Sunshine Turns One
Sophie Sunshine Turns One
Sophie Sunshine turned one on Sunday. In honor of the day (and also because why not? all spring Sundays should be spent so delightfully), we went on a little adventure. We drove up into the mountains to Etna, about two hours away, and took a gorgeous (albeit short) walk along the Steinacher Trail, followed by a picnic at a nearby campground. The puppies were terrific. They were mostly off-leash…
